The objective of the study was to ascertain the feed intake, acceptability of hay and weight gain by yankasa rams fed basal diets of either natural grass hay (NGH) as control, Digitaria exilis hay (DEH), Bracharia decumbens hay (BDH) or Digitaria decumbens hay (DDH) along with equal amounts of concentrate feed as supplement. The 10-week experiment was conducted at the College farm of the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), Vom, Plateau State, Nigeria using Completely Randomized Design. The four hays were allotted randomly to twenty rams housed in separate pens. There were five rams

The effects of supplementing different urea molasses blocks to Yankasa Rams fed maize offal-based diet on nutrient intake, growth performance and economics of production were evaluated. Yankasa rams fed cowpea shell and maize offal-based diets mixed in a ratio of 1:3 supplemented with urea molasses block (UMB). The supplementary blocks were formulated to contain 0, 5, 10 and 15% urea. Twenty Yankasa rams were used for the experiment with initial body weights range of 16-20kg and randomly allocated to four treatment groups of five animals each in completely randomized designed. The effect of feeding Napier grass hay supplemented with Nymphaea lotus leaf meal (NLLM) on the performance of Yankassa rams was investigated. A total of thirty rams were randomly divided into five treatments with six animals each using a completely randomized design (CRD), with the rams weighing an average of 15.05±1.39 kg. The basal diet consisted of Napier grass hay, while NLLM was supplemented at 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%. Daily feeding rate for the diets was 3% body weight per animal. The feeding experiment lasted for 120 days following a 28-day period of adaption. Digestibility was investiga

The use of phytochemical feed additives such as Maca (Lepedium meyenii) has been widely used by livestock farmers to reduce cost of production, toxic and residual effect of industrially chemical synthetic antibiotics and growth promoters. Therefore, this research was conducted to evaluate the effect of Maca power supplement on growth performance and nutrient digestibility of Yankasa rams. A total of twenty (20) grower Yankasa rams was divided into four treatment groups of 0, 5, 10, 15g/ Kg powdered Maca with five (5) rams each per treatment in a completely randomized design (CRD). Thirty (30) Yankasa growing rams were used to investigate the effect of feeding cowpea husk and tiger nut residue in a mixed ration on the rumen ecology, nutrient intake, nutrient digestibility, and nitrogen balance of Yankasa rams. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the rumen ecology, nutrient intake, nutrient digestibility, and nitrogen balance between the treatments. Rumen ecology was influenced by the diet, with variations in rumen pH, temperature, and volatile fatty acid production.
