Resumo:

The family Schistochilaceae Buch (1928: 9) consists of approximately 80 extant species. More than two-thirds of its diversity occurs in temperate to subantarctic South America and Australasia, and nearly one third in the tropical mountain forests of Southeast Asia and the western Pacific Islands. The plants of Schistochilaceae are usually robust and form a prominent component of the ground layer of cool temperate forests or upper montane tropical forests, commonly forests in which Nothofagus is a dominant genus. The first species of the family, published as Jungermannia appendiculata Hooker (1818: tab. 15), Jungermannia glaucescens Hooker (1818: tab. 39), Jungermannia lamellata Hooker (1818: tab. 49), Jungermannia nobilis Hooker (1818: tab. 11), Jungermannia sphagnoides Schwägrichen (1814: 23) and Jungermannia thouarsii Hooker (1818: tab. 48), were described during 1814–1818. Dumortier established the genus Schistochila Dumortier (1835: 15) to accommodate the above mentioned species except Jungermannia glaucescens and Jungermannia sphagnoides, but he also added one new species, Schistochila pinnatifolia Dumortier (1835: 15) nom. inval. (ICN Art. 38.1(a); no description; McNeill et al. 2012). The definition of Schistochilaceae has remained largely unchanged since it was separated from Scapaniaceae Migula (1904: 479) by Buch (1928) and then later Balantiopsaceae Buch (1955: 23). The presence of magenta rhizoids, winged and complicate-bilobed leaves with smaller dorsal lobes, a shoot calyptra elaborated into a well-developed coelocaule, and a cylindrical sporophyte capsule with straight valves generally defines the family. These features, to a great extent, isolate Schistochilaceae from the rest of the leafy liverworts. Therefore, taxonomic rearrangements or revisions, based on morphological investigations, have mostly been at generic level or below (Grolle 1966, 1968, Hässel 1973, Schuster 1971a, Schuster & Engel 1977, 1985). So far, taxonomic revisions have only been done at regional scales, a study at global scale is under way (Glenny et al., unpublished).

Resumo:

Feeding damage caused by Euryzygomatomys spinosus (G. Fischer, 1814) (Echimyidae) is documented for a Pinus taeda Linnaeus (Pinaceae) plantation located in Cambará do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Under laboratory conditions, feeding acceptance of P. taeda trunk sections was tested with positive results for E. spinosus, but not for other three co-occurring sigmodontine rodents: Akodon montensis Thomas, 1913, Oligoryzomys nigripes (Olfers, 1818) and Delomys dorsalis (Hensel, 1872).

Resumo:

This article is devoted to the analysis of the rhetoric presented in the Russian press in 1814—1818 regarding the imperial policy in the newly annexed Kingdom of Poland. The aim of the authors is to show that it is necessary to separate the real policy of the Russian autocracy in this territory from the images created first by French publicists, and then repeatedly exaggerated by Russian journalists. It is noted that Alexander I in 1814—1818 appears on the pages of French publications as a tsar-liberator. It is shown that these stories were quickly picked up by Russian newspapers and magazines and, as a result, a paradoxical picture emerged: for several years the mass media convinced the Russian society that the Russian Tsar was the new Polish national sovereign. It is argued that this, of course, caused rejection in conservative circles and among advanced Westerners such as Vyazemsky or Turgenev. It is concluded that it is the dominant discourse that can be considered, on the one hand, one of the factors in the emergence of the Decembrist movement, and on the other, a “trap” for Alexander I, since the liberal rhetoric of the press over time began to diverge more and more from the real policy of the Russian autocracy.

Rainbow Smelt (Osmerus mordax, Mitchill, 1814) has been widely introduced into lakes across North America and are reported to have an adverse effect on native fishes. In this study, we investigated the long-term changes to the pelagic fish assemblage in a northwestern Ontario lake (Sandybeach Lake) after Rainbow Smelt were introduced in the 1980s. We repeated an earlier summer, pelagic gill-netting survey of Sandybeach Lake and a nearby reference lake (Little Vermillion Lake) that does not contain Rainbow Smelt. Fishes throughout the water column were sampled with overnight sets of 5.2-m-deep, multi-mesh horizontal gill-nets. Compared with 1990 pelagic sampling, native fishes were significantly less abundant, less diverse, and largely absent from the deeper parts of Sandybeach Lake in 2012. Cisco (Coregonus artedi, Lesueur, 1818), Emerald Shiner (Notropis atherinoides Rafinesque, 1818), and Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis, Mitchill, 1814) were notably absent in 2012. In contrast, Rainbow Smelt remained abundant at all depths sampled. A small number of ciscoes — including Shortjaw Cisco (Coregonus zenithicus (Jordan and Evermann, 1909)) — and Lake Whitefish were captured from benthic gill-nets. Based on the lack of ciscoes in pelagic gill-nets, the very old ages (mean 30 years) of the few individuals captured in benthic gill-nets, and a severely skewed sex ratio, it is highly likely that ciscoes will be extirpated from Sandybeach Lake. Although the composition of the pelagic fish assemblage differed between years, Cisco was still abundant in Little Vermillion Lake with the presence of young individuals indicating ongoing recruitment.

Die Dissertation untersucht Samuel Taylor Coleridges Praxis der Selbstredaktion in den Jahren von 1814 bis 1818 und beleuchtet dabei die zentrale Rolle, die William Wordsworths The Excursion, 1814 als Teil von The Recluse erschienen, in der Herausbildung von Coleridges Œuvre einnimmt. Die Arbeit entwickelt ihre zentrale These zu Coleridges Überarbeitungspraxis durch eine detaillierte Analyse der Verfahren, über die Coleridge aufhörte, durch Wordsworth zu sprechen. Ich beziehe mich dabei in erster Linie auf die Überarbeitungen von Biographia Literaria (1817), Sibylline Leaves (1817) und dem 1818 erschienenen rifacciamento zu dem Periodikum The Friend, das ursprünglich 1809–1810 publiziert worden war. Vor dem Hintergrund von Coleridges in den 1790er- und 1800er-Jahren neu aufgekommener und sich später weiterentwickelnder Rezeption von Immanuel Kants kritischer Philosophie werde ich argumentieren, dass sich die „radikale Differenz“ zwischen Coleridge und Wordsworth, die seit den Lyrical Ballads (1798) und dem „Preface“ (1800) bestand, weiter verstärkte, nachdem es Wordsworth nicht gelungen war, das groß angelegte Konzept eines „first genuine philosophical poem“ – The Recluse – zu vollenden. Insbesondere nachdem Coleridge 1807 The Prelude gehört hatte, enttäuschte The Excursion nach den Maßstäben seiner „vergleichenden Kritik“ seine lang gehegten Erwartungen. Während sein organisches Weltbild einen aktiven Geist kannte, der nach universaler „Wahrheit“ sowohl durch innere synthetisierende Kräfte als auch empirische Naturgesetze strebt, gründete sich Wordsworths Gedicht auf ein obskur-labiles Fundament zwischen Außenwelt und Selbst. Coleridges aus seinen eigenen Theorien zu Sprache und Einbildungskraft erwachsene Enttäuschung über The Excursion und die nachfolgende Loslösung von Wordsworth und ihrem gemeinsamen Werk verschafften ihm letztendlich die notwendige Autonomie, die einerseits einen nüchternen Blick auf die eigene Vergangenheit und andererseits eine dialogische Freundschaft zu Wordsworth ermöglichten, innerhalb derer Coleridge die Bedeutsamkeit erkannte, zu einem Freund zu sprechen.
This thesis is an examination of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s revisionary activity from 1814 to 1818, considering the integral role of William Wordsworth’s The Excursion, published as part of The Recluse in 1814, on Coleridge’s conception of his discrete oeuvre. It is via a detailed analysis of the way Coleridge ceased to speak “through” Wordsworth that this thesis unfolds its principal argument on Coleridge’s revisionary activity. I principally consider the revisions at work in the Biographia Literaria (1817), Sibylline Leaves (1817) and the 1818 rifacciamento to The Friend (the periodical originally issued in 1809-1810). Taking into account Coleridge’s newly-emerging and subsequently evolving responses to Immanuel Kant’s critical philosophy in the 1790s and 1800s, I will argue that the already-existing “radical Difference” between Coleridge and Wordsworth ever since the Lyrical Ballads (1798) and the “Preface” (1800) further intensified following Wordsworth’s failure to bring their grand scheme for a “first genuine philosophical poem”, The Recluse, into completion. Especially after The Prelude Coleridge heard in 1807, The Excursion by means of his “comparative censure” fell short of meeting the long-cherished expectations. Whereas Coleridge’s organic view of the world involved the recognition of an active mind seeking universal “Truth” through the inner synthetic faculties as well as the empirical laws in nature, Wordsworth’s poem was founded upon an obscurely precarious ground between the phenomenal world and the inner self. Ultimately, Coleridge’s disappointment with The Excursion on the basis of his theories on language and imagination, and the ensuing detachment from Wordsworth and their joint oeuvre gave him the autonomy to revise his past works in a way that ensured formation of a more sober relationship with his own past and a dialogic friendship with Wordsworth in which Coleridge came to realise the importance of speaking to a friend.

El “Estudio analítico del repertorio registrado en el Libro 51 de la Casa de Comedias de Montevideo (1814-1818): repercusión de la actividad teatral madrileña en la cuenca del Plata” nos remite al conocimiento de la relación entre España y Montevideo a través de las obras que, en sus diferentes géneros del teatro y de la música, aparecen listadas en un manuscrito oriundo del Ex Archivo Administrativo de Montevideo. Como objetivos proponemos estudiar los datos proporcionados por el Libro 51 en sus diferentes partes (Cargo y Data. Inventario(s)) y conocer el perfil del repertorio de obras del teatro español, de diferentes épocas, fases, géneros y autores contenido en uno de los Inventarios, así como también los títulos representados en la temporada realizada entre agosto de 1814 a febrero de 1815 de igual origen. En la temporada fueron representados 47 títulos diferentes de géneros teatrales con participación de la música, de autores reconocidos del Siglo de Oro Español y especialmente del Teatro del Siglo XVIII en Madrid dentro de las tendencias del teatro neoclásico y, principalmente, del llamado teatro popular. Para la identificación de los títulos y correspondientes autores, fases y tendencias partimos para la busca de publicaciones con datos primarios que permitiesen el reconocimiento de los mismos a partir del criterio de títulos idénticos o casi idénticos, completos o incompletos. Transcribimos todos los datos en respectivos cuadros y los títulos con las correspondientes informaciones de las fuentes publicadas. El análisis fue realizado utilizando el concepto de polifonía através del diálogo con las fuentes y autores consultados para delimitar el tipo de relación entre todas estas voces y la circulación de este repertorio. Los resultados alcanzados proporcionan una adecuación de este término a partir de las características polifónicas de este diálogo; una revisión de las afirmaciones acerca del neoclasicismo como tendencia predominante según algunos autores uruguayos y la relación de la actividad teatral en este Coliseo con la función del teatro como institución y la repercusión, o no, de este repertorio en los ideales de la Independencia o en la concepción del teatro como centro de diversión o entretenimiento.

Transcrevemos todos os dados em quadros e os títulos com as respectivas informações. A análise foi realizada utilizando o concepto de polifonia através do diálogo com as fontes e autores consultados e assim, delimitados o tipo de relação de todas as vozes e a circulação do respertorio espanhol nesse momento em Montevideo. Os resultados alcançados proporcionaram uma adequação do término “polifonia” a partir das características deste diálogo; uma revisão das afirmações acerca do neoclassicismo como tendência predominante segundo alguns autores uruguaios e a relação da atividade teatral neste Coliseo com a função do teatro como instituição e a repercussão, ou não, de este repertorio nos ideais da Independência ou na concepção do teatro como diversão o entretenimento.

This study endeavours to elucidate the journal of Captain Hermanus Hofmeijer of the Dutch man 0' war, Amsterdam, which has been transcribed from the original script, translated from Dutch into English and interpreted from a contemporary viewpoint. It offers an opportunity to evaluate a unique primary historical document which records an important historical event. An attempt has been made to contextualise the incident in the light of the early history of the Dutch people. The contribution of the Dutch East India Company (VaC) to the trade and commerce of the Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries has been assessed together with the shipbuilding techniques that served to make the Dutch a major seafaring nation. The significance of Texel and Nieuwediep has been examined and the sea route and navigational instruments placed in perspective. The voyage has been analysed in some detail. The background of Captain Hermanus Hofmeijer has proved especially interesting. Although he pursued his career with the Dutch Navy, he was born and spent his early years in Cape Town, South Africa. The time spent by the Amsterdam in Batavia, Samaraog and Sourabaya gives an insight into the Dutch possessions overseas. The return voyage, storms and ultimate grounding are of special interest as Hofmeijer records the journey and events on a daily basis. The impact and significance of 217 extra people in the Eastern Cape area did not go unnoticed, and although the event was not well documented, an attempt at some contextualisation has been made. Finally a short overview of maritime archaeology in South Africa and its significance as a relatively new discipline has been included. The study of the material remains of the wreck of the Amsterdam has resulted in a new understanding of wooden ships built in the early 19th century.

Après avoir décrit les conditions dans lesquelles s'exerça la Terreur blanche, j'ai étudié la trentaine de complots d'origine républicaine ou bonapartiste qui éclatèrent pendant cette période, En 1816 ce furent des complots anti-royalistes dirigés contre le gouvernement de la Restauration dont le plus important fut celui de Grenoble du 4 mai qui conduisit à 25 exécutions. Il fut le seul de cette période à ne pas être organisé par la police, mais celle-ci laissa faire Suite à la dissolution de la chambre introuvable du 5 septembre 1816, les ultras dénoncèrent la politique du gouvernement et tentèrent de démontrer que les complots allaient continuer et menaçaient la monarchie. Le plus important de ces complots fut celui des environs de Lyon du 8 juin 1817 qui vit 11 exécutions. La provocation fut établie. Toujours aussi mécontents en 1818, les ultras tentèrent l'organisation d'un complot royaliste contre Louis XVIII, mais comme il n'éclata pas, son existence fut niée.

Ce n’est guère le mouvement jeune-hégélien qui vient immédiatement à l’espritlorsque sont évoqués les noms de Bakounine, d'Engels, de Marx ou même deStirner. Le premier et le dernier sont généralement associés à l’anarchisme,les deux autres, plus indubitablement encore, au marxisme. L'histoire de cespersonnages et le devenir de leurs œuvres n'ont pu que faire de l'ombre à leurappartenance commune et concomitante, trente ans avant que ne se cristallisentlesdits courants politiques, à ce qui a parfois été apparenté à une écolephilosophiqueLa présente thèse propose une lecture immanente, laquelle ne s'efforce pasmoins de restituer un contexte, des principaux écrits rédigés par ces auteursentre 1842 et 1843. La pensée de chacun d'entre eux est présentée dans sesinterrogations et ses enjeux propres, en s'intéressant aux emprunts et auxinnovations conceptuelles réalisées pour y répondre et tout en maintenantd’incessants aller-retours avec le champ problématique relatif au mouvementdans lequel elle prend corps et s’introduit.Il ne s'agit pas, par là, de procéder à une simple mise au point en matièred'histoire des idées. L'un des intérêts majeurs des textes abordés réside dansce qu'ils nous disent, dans une perspective post-hégélienne, de la philosophie.Les descriptions du présent que l'on trouve dans ces textes concordent, eneffet, quant à l'impossibilité d'établir l'unité du rationnel et de l'effectif.Tout reste encore à faire pour qui ne renonce pas à la réalisation de laliberté dans l'histoire. À suivre Hegel, pourtant, la philosophie doit secontenter de décrire ledit procès ou ses résultats. Doit-on se résoudre à ceque la philosophie ne puisse concourir à un destin dont elle a donné la clé ?N'est-il pas possible de la renouveler ? Et comment ? S'agit-il plutôt d'ensortir et d'imaginer d'autres formes d'intervention théoriques et pratiques ?Et qu'en est-il alors de ce qui reste de philosophique ?
The names of Bakunin, Engels, Marx, or Stirner are hardly ever associated withthe Young Hegelian movement. Bakunin and Stirner are generally associated withanarchism and Marx and Engels with marxism. Their lives and the fate of theirworks could do no more than obliterate the mutual and concomitant contributionsof these authors to what has sometimes been described as a philosophicalschool. This participation, in any case, occured thirty years before thecristallisation of the aforesaid political movements.This research proposes an immanent, and at the same time contextual, reading ofthe main texts written by these authors between 1842 and 1843. The theories ofeach of them are presented in accordance with their own questions and issues,focusing on the conceptual borrowings and innovations realised as aconsequence. They are expounded through a perpetual to and fro between theproblematic field related to the movement from which they were born and inwhich they participated.Nevertheless this study cannot be reduced to a mere contribution to the historyof ideas. One of the key interests of the analysed texts lies in what they tellus, from a post-hegelian perspective, about philosophy. When they describetheir epoch, they all conclude that there is no identity of the rational andthe real. There is still much to do for those who do not abandon the idea of therealisation of freedom in history. However, according to Hegel, philosophy canonly describe the process or the results of this realisation. Cannot philosophycontribute to the destiny it revealed? And if not, is it possible to renewphilosophy? How? Would an exit from philosophy be preferable? Other forms oftheoretical and practical intervention could be invented. But then, what aboutthe "philosophical" that remains?

Resumo:

This chapter studies the nature and quality of Jane Austen's originality. Beyond parody, but wittily in touch with contemporary fiction's excesses, beyond partisanship, but harnessing the language of polemical debates to illuminate ordinary experience, Austen set a rigorous standard for domestic realism. Key to Austen's originality is the way in which her novels transcend any attempt to reduce them to versions of the contemporary fictional subgenres in which she was nonetheless immersed. Though the fictional and political context in which she drafted her 1790s novels ( Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey) is very different from that in which she wrote and published Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), and Persuasion (1818), this strategy is evident across all her fiction.

Resumo:

Part III marks a shift in the exchange between the two families as Lady Beaumont begins to write independently to Wordsworth on a regular basis. A major focus of her letters to Wordsworth of 1814 and 1815 is the sale and reception of The Excursion. Another major concern around this time is the production of the frontispiece engravings (from paintings by Sir George) to Wordsworth’s Poems and The White Doe of Rylstone (1815). This section also contains details of paintings by Washington Allston, as well as insights into Edward Nash and William Westall, and Beaumont’s assessment of Haydon’s Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem. Beaumont gives detailed appraisals of the actors Edmund Kean, Eliza O’Neill, and John Philip Kemble. In addition, letters in Part III contain two eye-witness descriptions of the battlefield of Waterloo.

Although the British were kept aware of Gall’s doctrine from 1800 on, their reactions to it were muted until Spurzheim left him, made his way to London in 1814, and immediately began to promote what would soon become known as “phrenology” (a term he did not coin but began to use in 1818) in books and lecture-demonstrations throughout the British Isles. Anxious to stand out on his own after first associating himself with his more famous mentor, Spurzheim took it upon himself to modify Gall’s system, renaming some of the 27 faculties, adding a few new ones, and reclassifying them in what he considered a superior way. His first books appeared in English in 1815, and he was prolific. Gall was so bothered by the inroads Spurzheim was making that he visited London in 1823 to set the record straight. To his dismay, his lectures were not well attended and he cut his tour short. Spurzheim engaged in some well-covered debates with John Gordon, who considered the doctrine “a collection of mere absurdities,” and later with William Hamilton in Edinburgh. He also found a disciple in Edinburgh, George Combe, whose efforts would lead to the first phrenological society and journal, and in 1828 (the year of Gall’s death) a best-selling book, his Constitution of Man.
