Long-term variability of the cold subsurface water (CSW) in the Okhotsk Sea is analyzed on the base of all available oceanographic data collected in March through August of 1946-2015 (total 65,742 stations). The Integral Heat Content (IHC) is calculated for each station and average annual IHC anomalies of the cold subsurface water are determined by month and by 2-degree grid. The IHC anomaly series are analyzed using the EOF analysis. Cycles with period of approximately 30 years are revealed in the variations of the subsurface layer heat content. Thus, in the 1946-1950, its temperature decreased, but it grew since 2009-2010 to 2015. The warming of CSW was also observed in the 1951-1964 and 1978-1994, while the cooling was in the 1965-1977 and 1995-2008. Based on this criterion, the CSW thermal condition in certain years is classified as «extremely cold» in 2001, as «cold» in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, as «normal» in 1946, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, as «warm» in 1948, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2015, and as «extremely warm» in 1963. Statistically significant correlation is found between changes of the CSW thermal conditions and long-term variations of atmosphere and ocean climate indices, as well as local patterns of the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction in the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent onshore and offshore areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

Monthly sea surface temperature (SST) data of 49 years (1950-98) have been analysed to examine the relationship of SST anomalies in the Indian Ocean with Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) and to derive useful predictors for long-range forecasts of ISMR. There is significant positive relationship between ISMR and SST anomalies over the Arabian Sea during November to January and also in May. SST anomalies over southeast Indian Ocean during February to March and over North Pacific during May are also positively correlated with ISMR. The composite analysis revealed that in Non-ENSO drought years (1966, 1968, 1974 and 1979) negative SST anomalies are observed over south Indian Ocean from February which slowly spread towards equator during the subsequent months. These negative SST anomalies which persist during the monsoon season may be playing an important role in modulating ISMR especially in non-ENSO years.
We have derived two indices, ARBSST (SST anomalies in Arabian Sea averaged over 15o - 25o N, 50o -70o E and November-December-January) and SIOSST (SST anomalies over south Indian Ocean averaged over 15o -30o S, 70o -110o E and February and March) as useful predictors for the long-range forecasts of ISMR. The correlation coefficient (for the period 1950-98) of ARBSST and SIOSST with ISMR is 0.45 and 0.46 respectively which is statistically significant at 99.9 % level. SIOSST index has shown consistently stable relationship with ISMR. However the ARBSST index showed significant correlation with ISMR only after 1976.

El objetivo de este artículo es explorar los cambios en la fuerza laboral ante variaciones del producto, tanto para el caso de cambios en el volumen de la fuerza laboral como para cambios en la tasa global de actividad. Sobre la base de un análisis de series de tiempo encontramos que la fuerza laboral limeña tiene un comportamiento básicamente procíclico, lo cual lleva a que su volumen se incremente en el auge, determinando una menor efectividad de las políticas de generación de empleo. Esto determina una relativa estabilidad de la tasa de desempleo que está también asociada a la existencia de un sector de autoempleo, el cual absorbe los excedentes de fuerza laboral del sector moderno. Adicionalmente, encontramos que la sensibilidad de la fuerza laboral femenina con respecto de los cambios en el producto es mayor que el agregado, resultado esperado dado que la mayoría mujeres no son jefas de hogar y constituyen fuerza laboral secundaria en el contexto familiar. Finalmente, encontramos que la respuesta de la fuerza laboral ante cambios en el producto es menor en el agregado a partir de la década del 90, a pesar de que la sensibilidad en la participación laboral femenina es mayor en dicho período. Este resultado está asociado con una caída y una menor variabilidad en la participación laboral de los varones.---The objective of this article is to explore the changes in the labor force due to variations of the product, both for changes in the volume of labor force and for changes in the global rate of activity. By means of a time series analysis we find that the labor force in Lima has a basically procyclical behavior, which leads to an increase in its volume when product rices, hindering employment generating policies' effectiveness. This determines a relative stability of the unemployment rate, which is also associated to the existence of a self-employment sector, which absorbs the excesses of labor force of the modern sector. Additionally we find that the sensitivity of women labor force with respect to changes in product is greater than the aggregate, awaited result since most women are not household heads, and constitute secondary labor force in the farnily. Finally, we find that the sensitivity of labor force to changes in product is smaller in the aggregate during the 90's, even though sensitivity in women labor force participation is greater during this period. This result is associated with the fall and smaller variability in the men labor force participation in the same decade.

Samples of pike were collected by Lab. of Ichthyology, IBPN FEB RAS in the middle stream of the Anadyr River at Markovo in June-September of 1971-2010 and processed by standard methods; in total 2410 specimens were analyzed. The pike population changed significantly during the period of observation: the fish in catches became smaller and younger, growth rate decreased, and absolute and relative fecundity increased, mainly under impact of fishery, including industrial one that intensified in 1970-1980s. As the result, the pike abundance decreased in 1980s, and the first-spawning females and males became to prevail in its catches. Further decreasing of the abundance was able to promote a reduction of competition in the population. The population could be restored only after considerable decrease of fishing pressure, or banning of the species fishery, that would improve the feeding conditions. Recent lowering of the fishing pressure due to low stock causes partial recovery of the population accompanied by heightening of elder fish portion. Now the fish spawned several times prevail in the catches. However, the growth rate and females fecundity still differ from the values typical for the 1970s. Partial recovery of the pike population should be accounted in estimations of its predatory on other fishes in the Anadyr River, including commercial species.

Este artigo analisa a concordância (bruta e ajustada) dos óbitos de dengue registrados no Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN) e Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (SIM) no Brasil, no período de 2000 a 2005. Foi realizado um estudo epidemiológico observacional, seccional e descritivo de concordância dos dados de mortalidade por dengue nesses dois sistemas de informação. A concordância bruta e ajustada por chance (índice kappa) geral, no período de análise, foi de 99,9% e 19,6%, respectivamente. No ano com maior número de casos (2002), esses valores foram de 99,9% e 28,2%, respectivamente. A variação da proporção de óbitos concordantes de dengue nas Unidades Federadas (UF) brasileiras foi de 0% a 33%, e a Região Centro-Oeste foi a que apresentou maior mediana. Este estudo discute a importância da análise integrada e rotineira dos sistemas de informação em saúde com intuito de seu aprimoramento e a ampliação de seu uso para a avaliação e formulação de políticas de saúde adequadas.

La these s'interroge sur la nature et sur la portee de la politique d'ouverture exterieure de la chine. Celle-ci, fondee sur une definition sinisee d'un nationalisme economique legitime par la "raison de regime", se traduit d'une facon resolument pragmatique par la mise en oeuvre de reformes de liberalisation et de decentralisation relatives marquees par une orientation patriotique forte. En considerant la puissance economique et financiere des compatriotes de hong kong et de taiwan et la place relative considerable des communautes chinoises d'outre-mer au sein des pays a economie sinisee, la "meridionalisation" clairement identifiee des flux d'investissements directs etrangers et des echanges exterieurs masque, sous une apparente nationalite, la realite d'une orientation sino-chinoise. L'origine chinoise des dirigeants patriotes assure incontestablement un "positionnement relationnel local specifique" a la firme patriote. Les resultats d'une enquete menee en chine illustre d'une maniere generale que ces firmes poursuivent sur la base de ces positionnements concurrentiels specifiques une strategie de type glocal de court ou moyen terme qui, principalement determinee par les couts, s'inscrit dans une logique d'exportation sur les marches mondiaux et/ou sur les marches domestiques locaux. Dans une perspective plus macroeconomique, l'orientation patriotique de l'ouverture exterieure conduit non seulement a redefinir les parametres de l'equation continentale mais egalement a recomposer l'ensemble de la problematique chinoise en termes de grande chine (chine continentale, hong kong et taiwan). En effet, si l'investissement direct patriotique taiwanais peut contribuer a resserrer les liens economiques et politiques entre le continent et taiwan, celui-ci pourrait egalement servir la grande cause chinoise de cette fin de siecle : la reformation d'une grande chineThe subject of this thesis is to study the nature and the scope of china's open door policy. The external politics of china, originally, based on chinese definition of economic nationalism, are legitimated by the "raison de regime". These politics are reflected by a relative realization of liberalization and decentralization reforms. These are characterized by a strong patriotic orientation. Thus, if we consider the economic and financial power of compatriots of hong kong and taiwan and the remarkable position of the chinese overseas communities within singapore. Thailand, malaysia, indonesia and the philippines, the "southernalization" of foreign direct investment and foreign trade flows covers, under an apparent nationality, the reality of a sino-chinese orientation. The chinese origin of the patriotic managers ensures, without any doubt, a "specific local relational positioning" of the patriotic company. An inquiry realised in china shows that these firms follow, generally, "glocal strategy" in short or medium term, based on these specific concurrential positionings. These strategies, mainly determined by costs, are oriented towards international markets and/or domestic local markets. In a more macroeconomic perspective, the patriotic orientation of china's open door policy leads to a new definition of the "continental equation" but also to a recomposition of the whole "chinese question" in greater china terms (china, hong kong and taiwan). If taiwanese patriotic direct investment can contribute to reinforce the economic and political links between the continent and taiwan, this could therefore also serve the great chinese ambition of the end of this century the greater china

Analizar el desarrollo de un marco normativo sobre salud pública, asistencia sanitaria e higiene social y su influencia en la realidad socio-sanitaria valenciana, a través de nuevas instituciones y nuevas políticas de salud. El material utilizado ha consistido en una combinación de fuentes históricas que incluyen fuentes legislativas, de archivo e impresas, que nos ha permitido desarrollar una perspectiva transversal entre el marco normativo y la realidad social. El trabajo se ha estructurado en siete capítulos que abordan sucesivamente: introducción, historiografía sobre historia de la sanidad, la evolución histórica del modelo sanitario español, la organización de la higiene pública valenciana (1882-1936), la organización de la asistencia sanitaria valenciana (1854-1936), conclusiones y bibliografía. En las conclusiones hemos diferenciado la respuesta del sistema sanitario a los problemas colectivos de salud y las medidas de política sanitaria de las instituciones municipales y provinciales (institutos municipal y provincial de higiene, despensarios, etc.) y de asistencia (hospital, beneficiencia domiciliaria).

Les années soixante et soixante-dix exercent une fascination certaine dans l'imaginaire collectif québécois. Cependant, le manque de perspective historique est un obstacle comblé par l'accessibilité des documents écrits et audiovisuels, de même que la chance de pouvoir directement nous entretenir avec les acteurs des événements importants de ces deux décennies. Cette période débute, entre autres, avec la Révolution tranquille (1960-1966) et les nombreuses mutations auxquelles elle a donné lieu pour la société québécoise. La création de groupes de quartier et la mobilisation populaire en vue de bâtir une société nouvelle sont des exemples de l'engagement demandé à la population par le gouvernement Lesage à cette époque. Un des événements majeurs de cette décennie réunit l'ensemble de ces visions modernistes : l'exposition universelle «Terre des Hommes», en 1967. Cet événement fut l'un des éléments de la reconnaissance mondiale d'un Québec moderne. Les événements d'octobre 1970 sont le point culminant quant au climat de «grand dérangement» vers le progrès qui avait cours et dont les mouvements nationalistes avaient aussi profité dans cette grande redéfinition du Québec. Le repli gouvernemental d'alors vers des politiques plus traditionalistes n'arrête pourtant en rien les mouvements populaires. Une certaine partie de la population expérimente de nouvelles façons de vivre et l'influence de la contre-culture américaine est ici non négligeable…

Au milieu des annees 70, la lecture de poemes a voix haute a paris est liee au prestige d'un repertoire patrimonial servi par des comediens. L'image de la poesie est floue, minoree; fruit d'une evolution debutee au xixeme siecle, visant a l'autonomie de la litterature et a son fonctionnement selon une logique de production restreinte. Dans ce contexte, afin de consolider le sous-champ poetique et de renforcer leurs positions, les poetes recourent a la lecture a voix haute comme strategie de diffusion de leurs textes et imposent leur mode d'oralisation, aux antipodes de l'interpretation par lescomediens et des performances des poetes sonores, aux confins des arts plastiques et de la musique. La presence physique du poete, venu a la rencontre du public, s'inscrit dans une logique d'action culturelle qui, a l'epoque, passe d'un schema malrucien du "coup de foudre" pour l'oeuvre a une logique "annees lang" du "pouvoir au createur". Mais malgre le souhait exprime d'augmenter le public de lapoesie contemporaine, les lectures a voix haute par les poetes ont surtout eu pour effet d'elargir le cercle des lecteurs deja "pratiquants". Echec ou, au contraire, parfait aboutissement d'une logique de production restreinte, fonctionnant en autarcie? en ayant recours a un outil de diffusion "hybride", qui releve des champs artistique, culturel et mediatique, mais en lui accordant une valeur d'authentification par la lecture de l'auteur lui-meme, les poetes contemporains ont en fait reussi a imposer leur conception de la poesie et de la litterature, tout en consolidant leurs positions. Un veritable elargissement des publics ne peut s'effectuer en resistant aux fonctionnements et aux enjeux du champ du pouvoir (dont les medias et le marche), et des pratiques amateurs qui s'y developpent. Mais ce seraient les notions memes de litterature et de culture qui se verraient la bousculeesIn the mid 1970s, poetry readings in paris were linked to the glamour of the inherited repertoire performed by actors. The image of poetry was vague, underrated; the result of an evolution which began in the 19th century, aiming at literature's autonomy and at its functioning according to the logic of a limited output. In this context, in order to consolidate the poetic undercurrent and to reinforce their positions, poets resorted to reading aloud as a strategy for distributing their texts and enforcing their oral method. A world apart from actors interpretations and from the "sonorous performances" of poets, on the fringes of plastic arts and music. The physical presence of a poet, there to meet the public, finds its place in a logical, cultural change which, at that time, passed from a malrucien outline of "love at first sight" for the works, to the "lang years" logic of "power to the creator". But in spite of the expressed desire to heighten public interest in contemporary poetry, these poetry readings above all caused the circle of already devoted poetry "fans" to grow in numbers. A failure, or by contest, a perfect outcome of a limited output logic, moving in self-sufficiency? having turned to a "hybrid" method of diffusion, which links the domaines of art, culture and media, but the reading by the author himself adding a dimension of authenticity, contemporary poets have been successful in imposing their definition of poetry and literature, whilst consolidating their own positions. A real growth in public interest can not be achieved by resisting the operations and stakes of the domains of power (these being the media and the economy), and the amateur practices which develop there. But it would be these very notions of literature and culture which would find themselves disrupted

Nous en sommes venue à nous intéresser à l'édition en suivant un séminaire de maîtrise sur l'édition littéraire au Québec. Ce séminaire, qui avait pour but d'étudier l'édition québécoise au XXe siècle, nous a permis de nous familiariser avec la théorie de l'édition en lisant, entre autres, des textes fondamentaux de Robert Escarpit, de Pierre Bourdieu, de Jacques Dubois et de Maurice Lemire. De plus, nous avons aussi lu de nombreux témoignages d'éditeurs, qu'ils soient français, comme Bernard Grasset et Jérôme Lindon, ou québécois, comme Pierre Tisseyre et Roland Giguère, nous permettant ainsi de réfléchir aux différentes fonctions de l'édition littéraire. Nous avions orienté nos recherches sur l'édition de poésie en raison de notre intérêt personnel pour ce genre littéraire, mais aussi parce que nous savons qu'éditer de la poésie, c'est faire de l'édition restreinte en misant d'abord sur l'accumulation d'un capital symbolique. De nombreux petits éditeurs de poésie sont apparus dans les années cinquante et soixante. À cette époque, quelques-uns publient des titres de poésie qu'ils choisissent de regrouper dans des collections. Entre autres, Atys (1958-1971) lance la collection «Silex», qui contient cinq titres parus entre 1958 et 1964. Les fondatrices des Éditions Quartz, Diane Pelletier et Micheline Sainte-Marie, fondent la collection «Le refus de la colombe», qui était réservée au premier titre d'un nouveau poète. La collection ne semble pas avoir récolté les fruits espérés puisqu'elle ne contient que deux recueils des éditrices elles-mêmes.

Au cours des années quatre-vingt, après avoir été presque éclipsée au début de la décennie précédente en ce qui a trait au nombre de livres publiés annuellement, la littérature québécoise pour la jeunesse a connu un essor remarquable. D'importantes maisons d'édition - que l'on songe par exemple à Fides ou à Pierre Tisseyre - ont repensé leurs collections destinées à la jeunesse. Proposant des romans aux sujets plus audacieux, recourant à une illustration dynamique, ces maisons ont contribué à redonner un air de jeunesse à une littérature qui en avait grand besoin.

The use of air power has become more important in modern warfare, and the ability to use the full potential of air power is significant for a beneficial outcome of conflict. Today’s most established air power theories are developed from a military superpower perspective, leaving a void of knowledge for the smaller air forces. This study intends to find out how the air power advocate Robert Pape’s theory theater air power is applicable to small states and small air forces by testing Pape’s theory against the Six Day War in 1967 and the Georgia War in 2008 and thus contribute to a greater basis for the debate on how the air forces should be used and which role they play in conflict. The result show, in contrast to Pape’s theory, that air superiority is beneficial but not decisive. Instead, the coordination between arms is crucial for high combat efficiency and utilization of airspace. Also, the result shows that operational interdiction is the most efficient course of action for small state to use their air power, particularly if lacking the ability to defeat heavily armoured combat vehicles and battle tanks. Finally, the result clarifies that the air power cannot win conflicts by their own but are a vital contributor to the favourable outcome of conflict.

De sertão a sertón: traducción emancipadora y análisis de neologismos de Grande sertão: veredas en las traducciones para el español es una investigación que tiene por objetivo analizar comparativamente, bajo el enfoque del concepto de emancipación estética, neologismos de Grande sertão: veredas (1956) en sus traducciones para el español, ambas tituladas Gran sertón: veredas en las ediciones española (1967) e argentina (2009). Se fundamenta en el concepto de emancipación estética según la Estética de la Recepción de línea jaussiana y, en el campo de Estudios de la Traducción, en el pensamiento de Haroldo de Campos (1929-2003) y de Antoine Berman (1942-1991). El entendimiento de neologismo dialoga estrictamente con los Estudios Literarios, enfatizando su potencial creativo para la obra de partida y la posibilidad de abertura y tensión para las obras de llegada, de acuerdo con los procedimientos adoptados por cada traductor. Se elaboró un corpus de investigación que utiliza el glosario anexo producido con neologismos seleccionados de estudios críticos, del vocabulario de Castro (1982) e incluso de la correspondencia entre Guimarães Rosa y Ángel Crespo, el traductor español, priorizando en este último como recorte el interés por el lenguaje. La metodología de trabajo comprende las siguientes etapas: estudio bibliográfico en que se estudia el potencial emancipatorio del diálogo entre obra y lector, en el ámbito estético-receptivo. Posteriormente, se trazan paralelos entre traducción y crítica y entre traducción y creación literaria según el pensamiento de Campos (2006). Además, se expone la idea de autonomía, en el campo de la ética traductoria de Berman (2002) y, por medio de su analítica, se basa el posterior análisis del corpus seleccionado dentro del ámbito de los Estudios de la Traducción. Se sigue a eso, el estudio de textos del propio Guimarães Rosa relatando su interés por el lenguaje y por el uso de neologismos, al lado de textos de lectores críticos como Proença (1959), Daniel (1968), Castro (1982), Martins (1946), Martins (2001), Xisto (1970) e Campos (1970), que se preocuparon con estas cuestiones acerca de la novela. Se procede, entonces, al análisis de las traducciones exponiendo las lecturas críticas de Bedate (2009), Vargas Llosa (2007), Maura (2012), Cámara (2012) y García (2014) y también de los traductores. Para, en seguida, examinar los neologismos de Grande sertão: veredas, que componen el glosario, verificando las diferentes soluciones dadas por cada traductor de acuerdo con tipologías establecidas por medio del examen del modo como Guimarães Rosa aborda el neologismo en su novela. Las tipologías determinadas por el actual estudio fueron las siguientes: utilización de onomatopeyas, utilización de otras lenguas, utilización de tupinismos, utilización de expresiones populares y creación de palabras de sentido probable u oculto. Finalmente, con el diálogo entre las lecturas críticas y el análisis del glosario se investiga la presencia del carácter emancipador en las obras de llegada.
Do sertão ao sertón: tradução emancipadora e análise de neologismos de Grande sertão: veredas nas traduções para o espanhol é uma pesquisa que tem por escopo analisar comparativamente, sob o enfoque do conceito de emancipação estética, neologismos de Grande sertão: veredas (1956) em suas traduções para o espanhol, ambas intituladas Gran sertón: veredas nas edições espanhola (2000) e argentina (2009). Fundamenta-se no conceito de emancipação estética segundo a Estética da Recepção de linha jaussiana e, no campo de Estudos da Tradução, no pensamento de Haroldo de Campos (1929-2003) e de Antoine Berman (1942-1991). O entendimento de neologismo dialoga estreitamente com os Estudos Literários, enfatizando seu potencial criativo para a obra de partida e a possibilidade de abertura e tensão para as obras de chegada, de acordo com os procedimentos adotados por cada tradutor. Elaborou-se um corpus de investigação que utiliza o glossário anexo produzido com neologismos selecionados de estudos críticos, do vocabulário de Castro (1982), bem como da correspondência trocada entre Guimarães Rosa e Ángel Crespo, o tradutor espanhol, priorizando nesta última como recorte o interesse pela linguagem. A metodologia de trabalho compreende as seguintes etapas: estudo bibliográfico no qual se investiga o potencial emancipatório do diálogo entre obra e leitor, no âmbito estético-receptivo. Posteriormente, traçam-se paralelos entre tradução e crítica e entre tradução e criação literária segundo o pensamento de Campos (2006). Ademais, expõe-se a ideia de autonomia, no campo da ética tradutória de Berman (2002) e, por meio de sua analítica, baseia-se a posterior análise do corpus selecionado dentro do âmbito dos Estudos da Tradução. Segue-se a isso, o estudo de textos do próprio Guimarães Rosa relatando seu interesse pela linguagem e pelo uso de neologismos, ao lado de textos de leitores críticos como Proença (1959), Daniel (1968), Castro (1982), Martins (2001), Martins (1946), Xisto (1970) e Campos (1970), que se preocuparam com tais questões acerca do romance. Procede-se, então, à análise das traduções expondo as leituras críticas de Bedate (2009), Vargas Llosa (2007), Maura (2012), Cámara (2012) e García (2014) e também dos tradutores, para, em seguida, examinar os neologismos de Grande sertão: veredas, que compõem o glossário, verificando as diferentes soluções dadas por cada tradutor de acordo com tipologias estabelecidas por meio do exame do modo como Guimarães Rosa aborda o neologismo em seu romance. In their framework outlining educational experiences for online students, Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000) identify and explain the critical elements of a Community of Inquiry that support instruction and learning. The elements include: cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence. While an online educational experience is impacted by the interplay of all three presences, new online teachers may struggle with developing a teaching presence since their own educational experiences as students may be very different from the ones they encounter as online instructors (Lortie, 1975). In this book chapter, the importance of teaching presence will be discussed. Strategies for developing online teacher presence will be examined and technologies for fostering teacher presence will be outlined. The chapter concludes with broad design principles that apply to the construction of online learning environments that foster a strong teacher presence.

New efficient solid-state laser materials - lanthanum beryllate (Nd:BEL) and potassium gadolinium tungstate (Nd:KGW) - for laser diode pumping were compared with the most popular Nd:YAG crystal. Nd:YAG, Nd:BEL and Nd:KGW were pumped in the same cavity conditions suitable for intracavity frequency doubling: Rin>99.98% and Rout=99.9%. The relation between the output power and pump radiation wavelength was investigated in the range 807.5 - 811.5 nm. Both for Nd:BEL and Nd:KGW the obtained dependence is much weaker than the one expected from the absorption spectra. An interpretation of this behavior for high Nd -doping crystals is proposed.

Abstract Efficient thermal oxidation (> 99.99% conversion) utilizes high temperatures associated with “simple” diffusion flames to convert chloro-hydrocarbons (RCls) into H2O, CO2, and HCl. To optimize this process, it is necessary to understand the physical phenomena occurring inside the diffusion flame. This understanding is culminated in advanced combustion models. Although these models may help identify important factors, a more balanced research approach has been used to support industrial thermal oxidation units. Besides modeling, fundamental laboratory experiments coupled with full-scale plant experiments are also essential. Laboratory measurements focus on specific phenomena while plant experiments include the coupled effects of all of the governing subprocesses. This balanced approach leads to a better understanding of thermal oxidation which leads to more efficient operation.

The Czech Catholic writer Jan Čep (1902–1974) belonged to the group of authors who built their work on spiritual-religious motifs. Literary critic František Xaver Šalda stated in the bookmark of Čep’s novel The Border of a Shadow (1935) that he is a “poet of death”, namely “a very special, possessing a very special, unusual view of things of life and death”. The language and imagery of his artistic work are based on philosophical-reflexive and meditative lyricism, often with a contemplative overlap. We consider the image of a double home to be one of the key images of Čep’s poetics. Its development can be traced from the author’s juvenile prose work to the latest texts, which are mainly essay-like. In addition to this image, however, in Čep’s work, reflecting on the phenomenon of life and death also appears to be the mainstay, while it is obvious that these entities are very closely related to the image of a double home. In this context, it will be important to observe how the phenomenon of death is depicted in Čep’s only novel The Border of a Shadow.

In the late 1970’s, due to increasing electric energy costs and the potential for power interruption at Solar Turbines Incorporated’s Harbor Drive manufacturing facility, management evaluated several self-generating options available at the time. With large fluctuating loads and a very limited need for thermal energy, the appropriate solution was determined to be peak shaving. In 1980, a 2.5-MW dual fuel industrial gas turbine generator set was installed. Its intended operating cycle was during on-peak billing periods, 5 days a week throughout the year. Through August 31, 1993, the system has accumulated 22,743 hours of use and 3879 starts. Its overall start reliability has been 99.9% with an availability of 98.2%. Payback on the installation was in 4.2 years. It has continued to generate savings since installation, with net savings for 1992 alone exceeding $470,000. This paper highlights the key aspects of the economic methodology justifying installation of the peak shaving system, operating procedures, maintenance practices and system modifications put in place over the life of the installation.

This paper describes the development of an ultra-low NOx gas turbine combustor for cogeneration systems. The combustor, called a double swirler staged combustor, utilizes three-staged premixed combustion for low NOx emission. The unique feature of the combustor is its tertiary premix nozzles located downstream of the double swirler premixing nozzles around the combustor liner. Engine output is controlled by simply varying the fuel gas flow, and therefore employs no complex variable geometries for air flow control. Atmospheric combustion tests have demonstrated the superior performance of the combustor. NOx level is maintained at less than 3 ppm (O2=15%) over the range of engine output between 50% and 100%. Assuming the general relationship that NOx emission is proportional to the square root of operating pressure, the NOx level is estimated at less than 9 ppm (O2=15%) at the actual pressure of 0.91 MPa (abs.). Atmospheric tests have also shown high combustion efficiency; more than 99.9% over the range of engine output between 60% and 100%. Emissions of CO and UHC are maintained at 0 and 1 ppm (O2=15%), respectively, at the full engine load.
