Germinating uredospores of race C17 of Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici form characteristic infection structures (appressorium, infection peg, vesicle, infection hypha) in response to a 1.5 h heat shock at 29° C administered 2 h after germination at 19° C. The proportion of sporelings forming infection structures was augmented by nutrients, n-nonyl alcohol and, an appropriately timed heat shock. A procedure to inoculate seed potatoes with Dickeya dadantii was developed to use during this study. Tree and stand characteristics recorded between 1978 and 1985 include estimates of percent defoliation on individual trees. Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin produced in cereal grains infected by Fusarium Head Blight produced by Fusarium graminearium and Deoxynivalenol-3-?-D-glucopyranoside (DON-3G), were studied during processing using LC-MS-MS and GC. DON reduced significantly (P<0.05) 61.8% during milling into flour. Therefore, DON was concentrated mostly in the bran and germ. DON increased 40.8% during the fermentation stage of baking. Polyclonal antisera produced against spores, soluble protein and the whole mycelium fractions of Didymella lycopersici reacted with the homologous and heterologous antigens. The most sensitive antiserum was that raised against the whole mycelium, the soluble protein and the spore, in decreasing order of sensitivity. Blueberry bushes with scorch symptoms were found during a survey of blueberry fields in British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Some of these bushes were infected with blueberry scorch virus (BBScV) while others contained a second virus which was sap transmissible to Nicotiana clevelandii, N. benthamiana, and N. tabacum cv. 'Havana 425' . This virus was purified from N. clevelandii and had isometric particles of approximately 30 nm in diameter, a coat protein subunit of 27,500 daltons and a tripartite genome. Ramets of 14 clones of western black cottonwood Populus trichocarpa Torr. & Gray collected from the interior and coast of British Columbia were tested in the nursery for their growth performance after infection by the leaf rust Melampsora occidentalis Jacks. Linear relationships were demonstrated between various growth parameters (total dry weight, stem dry weight, root dry weight, volume, diameter and height) and disease severity rated as diseased leaf-weeks divided by total leaf-weeks. The effect of interrupted leaf wetness (IWP) and %RH on infection by Cercospora carotae (Pass.) Solh. was studied by inoculating carrot leaves (Daucus carota var sativa DC. L.) and subjecting the plants to different IWP treatment, continuous leaf wetness (CWP) and to different combinations of %RH and temperature with and without an initial wet period of 6 hr. IWP significantly reduced infection as compared to CWP. Infection was optimal under leaf wetness and decreased with decrease in percent RH. In Australia, anthracnose on almond is caused by the ascomycete fungus Colletotrichum acutatum. Anthracnose has been confirmed throughout the major almond growing regions of Australia and significant economic losses have been reported. Fungicide trials carried out in Australia in 2000, prior to this project, yielded variable results that differed from those achieved in California.
