Resumo:
The original idea for this dissertation came during the internship at DIN (Department of Industrial Engineering – University of Bologna). This study’s aim is to develop knowledge in understanding the magnetic refrigeration (MR) technology, theoretical design skills and practical ability to perform a complete characterization of a MR device. All these efforts will lead to the design of a MR prototype, hopefully useful for a future mass production and commercialization. MR is an innovative technology for cooling devices and it could be a breakthrough in the field of room temperature refrigeration thanks to its potential. This dissertation is divided into three parts: the theoretical introduction to refrigeration and more precisely MR, the development of the design process of the MR device, the experimental characterization of the behavior of the hydraulic infrastructure of the prototype. Chapter 5 is between the last two parts and it sums up the development of this project, in order to help the reader see the forest instead of the trees. After a short explanation about traditional cooling technologies, the introduction shows the state of the art of MR, focusing the attention on magnetocaloric effect (MCE) thermodynamic and on the active magnetic regenerative (AMR) regenerators. The core activity of this study is illustrated in the second couple of chapters. Chapter 3 describes the design process of the hydraulic circuit and its components, drawn on Creo PTC®. The analytical part of this design process is in chapter 4, with the study of pressure drops through original algorithm. The last part illustrates the determination, the development and the first results of the testing system, which is applied to the hydraulic circuit. During this phase the software used is LabVIEW® from the National Instruments Company.

This thesis relates the analysis of the full disk helioseismic data IRIS – International Research of the Interior of the Sun, running into multisite since 11 years. The merging of data from various partnerships in a coherent manner results in a significant improvement in duty cycles, initiating the IRIS++ network, whose data are from now on freely accessible. The long and short term variabilities of p-mode parameters with solar activity and frequency have been studied, thanks to the 11 years of collected measurements, covering a complete solar cycle. The observed variations in parameters show an important sensitivity with the activity, constraining the damping and the excitation of the modes during the solar cycle. The obviousness of variations about a few months in the p-mode frequencies is presented as well as the observation o similar periodicities to those found in other solar data set. Tables of frequencies and splittings have been computed

In infrastructure construction projects especially bridge investments, the most critical decisions that significantly affect the whole bridge LCC are the early stages decisions. Clearly, it's more beneficial to correctly choose the optimum bridge than to choose the optimum construction or repair method.

The ability of a bridge to provide service over time demands appropriate maintenance by the agency. Thus the investment decision should consider not only the initial activity that creates a public good, but also all future activities that will be required to keep that investment available to the public.

This research is aiming for bridge sustainability, enhance the bridge related decision making, and facilitate the usage of the bridge related feedbacks. The development of a reliable and usable computer tool for bridge LCC & LCA evaluation is the main target.

Toward the main goal, many steps were fulfilled. A unique integrated Bridge LCC evaluation methodology was developed. Two systematic evaluation ways were developed, one for bridge user cost and one for the bridge aesthetical and cultural value. To put these two systematic ways in practice, two preliminary computer programs were developed for this purpose. Today and future works are focusing on developing methodology and preliminary computer tool for bridge agency cost as well as the bridge LCA evaluation. KTH unique LCC evaluation system will enable the decision makers to correctly choose the optimum bridge in the early stages decision making phases as well as any later on reparation method.

An imbalance between energy uptake and energy expenditure can lead to obesity and increase the risk of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, type II diabetes and some cancers. Given that key elements of energy pathway are evolutionary conserved, invertebrate research is an attractive alternative that overcomes the many legislative, financial and experimental hurdles typical of research with higher metazoan animals. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a premier invertebrate model and has been utilized to study a wide range of topics of biomedical research including obesity, aging, toxicology, pharmaceutical and drug delivery approaches. Previous studies have suggested that raw extracts from a South African succulent (Hoodia gordonii) and P57 (the main active compound of the extracts) may exert an appetite suppressant effect. To investigate this notion in more detail, this present study aimed to pinpoint phenotypic, genetic and genomic-level responses of C. elegans treated with H. gordonii extract. Supplementing the bacterial food source with H. gordonii extract resulted in a significant reduction in growth parameters and the pharyngeal pumping rate as well as the fecundity. Likewise, it diminished the overall level of Nile Red positive compartments, which is indicative of a change in lipid metabolism. Comprehensive transcriptomics revealed that several genes involved in aging, lipid transport and reproduction were modulated following the exposure to the crude extract and pure P57. Based on these results, selected deletion mutants were studied in more detail, including fat-5 (a member of the Δ9 desaturases) and cyp-35A2 (a member of the cytochrome P450 family). The creation of a fat-5(tm420);cyp-35A2(gk317) mutant uncovered that the deletion of both genes resulted in a strain which is marked by a reduced fat content and an extended lifespan. Taken together, the results suggest the presence of a putative correlation between longevity and dietary restriction and given that both genes have human homologs, this finding may offer a new lead to investigate in higher organisms.

This dissertation presents the results of an investigation into the nature and causes of aggregate economic fluctuations. It comprises four essays, analysing the following topics: - Chapter 1 investigates the main features of business cycles in Italy in historical perspective (1861-1995). The essay reconsiders the assumption that business cycles are all alike, complementing the search for time domain regularities with a classical analysis of individual cycles and phases. It also provides formal tests, for ten industrialized countries, of various aspects of the representative cycle hypothesis. The results show that there is substantial heterogeneity in individual cycles and phases in terms of duration, amplitude, and co-movements between variables, and that such heterogeneity is generally statistically significant. - Chapter 2 reports the results of an empirical investigation of business cycle asymmetries in the Italian economy. Macroeconomic time series, both long run annual and post-war quarterly, are investigated to test for the presence of non-linearity and cyclical asymmetry. The dynamics of recessions and expansions are then modelled with threshold autoregressive and Markov-switching models. The essay shows that allowing for two regimes can be sufficient to account for the finding of neglected non-linearity, and concludes that business cycle asymmetries provide both an intuitive economic interpretation and a parsimonious representation of non-linearities in macroeconomic time series. - Chapter 3 applies models of explicit distribution dynamics to company account data for a panel of U.S. manufacturing firms, to investigate the dynamics of the cross-section distribution of firms' financial positions and its interactions with aggregate activity. The dynamics of different parts of the leverage distribution are found to contain significant predictive information for aggregate investment growth. The distribution dynamics reveal substantial intra-distribution mobility, although there is little evidence of significant interactions with aggregate economic activity. Intra-distribution mobility is higher for small than for large firms, and displays asymmetric patterns across business cycle phases. - Chapter 4 investigates the dynamic interaction between financial conditions and investment decisions by estimating and testing vector autoregressions on company account panel data for U.S. manufacturing firms. The results show that indicators of liquidity and solvency contain significant predictive information for investment at firm level. There is also evidence of both sectional and time heterogeneity: the role played by financial factors is significantly more important for highly leveraged than for low-debt firms; capital market frictions are shown to have asymmetric effects, displaying a larger impact in contractions than in expansions. Overall, the evidence supports the hypothesis that capital market imperfections have an important role in explaining aggregate cyclical dynamics.

The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of instruction based on 5E learning cycle model over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on tenth grade students&rsquo
understanding of acid-base concepts. Fifty- six tenth grade students from two classes of a chemistry course taught by the same teacher in Atatü
rk Anatolian High School 2003-2004 spring semester were enrolled in the study. The classes were randomly assigned as control and experimental groups. Students in the control group were instructed by traditionally designed chemistry instruction whereas students in the experimental group were taught by the instruction based on 5E learning cycle model. Acid-Base Concepts Achievement Test was administered to both groups as a pre-test and post-test in order to assess their understanding of concepts related to acid-base. Students were also given Attitude Scale Toward Chemistry as a School Subject at the beginning and end of the study to determine their attitudes and Science Process Skill Test at the beginning of the study to measure their science process skills. The hypotheses were tested by using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and t-test. The results indicated that instruction based on 5E learning cycle model caused a significantly better acquisition of scientific conceptions related to acid-base produced significantly higher positive attitudes toward chemistry as a school subject than the traditionally designed chemistry instruction. In addition, science process skill was a strong predictor in understanding the concepts related to acid-base.

Nowadays, the increase of risks associated with malaria results from the development of resistance of Plasmodium falciparum strains to antimalarial drugs. This situation and the lack of an effective vaccine require the development of new antimalarial strategies. Untilnow, molecular mechanisms controlling the life cycle of malaria parasites, are still poorly understood. In most eukaryotes, protein kinases are implicated in essential cellular functions and represent attractive targets for the development of new drugs. In this context, we focused on the signaling pathway implicating cAMP and particularly the catalytic subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PfPKAc), whose function is still unclear in P. falciparum. Two complementary strategies were chosen to study this kinase:1) at the biochemical level by the cloning, expression, purification and enzymatic characterization of the PfPKAc. The objective was to obtain an in vitro active PfPKAc to evaluate the kinetic constants of PfPKAc and to conduct the first inhibition studies.2) at the cellular level by studying the consequences of PfPKAc transcripts inhibition byspecific interfering RNAs. The parasite growth but also the overall transcriptome werestudied to specify the metabolic pathways associated with this plasmodial protein kinase. All of these studies improve the understanding of cAMP transduction pathway and PfPKA,which could allow the development of new therapeutic approaches

An air‐cycle air conditioning system, using a typical automotive turbocharger as the core of the system, was designed and tested. Effects on engine performance were kept to a minimum while providing the maximum amount of cooling possible and minimizing weight and space requirements. A test stand utilizing shop compressed air was developed to measure component performance. An unmodified automotive turbocharger was tested initially as a baseline in a Reversed‐Brayton Cycle air cooling system. Once the baseline was established, another aircycle machine, assembled from commercial turbocharger components chosen individually to optimize their performance for cooling purposes, was tested to improve the overall cycle efficiency. Finally, once the air‐cycle air conditioning system was optimized, it was tested on an engine to simulate more realistic operating conditions and performance. The shop‐air test stand experiments showed a peak dry‐air‐rated (DAR) coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.38 and a DAR cooling capacity of 0.45 tons for the baseline turbocharger, and a peak DAR COP of 0.73 and DAR cooling capacity of 1.5 tons for the optimized system with a modified turbocharger. The on‐engine testing was limited due to a thrust bearing failure in the ACM. However, the data collected at lower engine load and speed indicates a DAR COP of 0.56 and a DAR cooling capacity of 0.72 tons. On‐engine testing was planned to include operating points where the stock turbocharger was utilizing turbine‐bypass to limit boost pressure. While it wasn't possible to continue testing, it is expected that DAR COP and cooling capacity would have increased at higher engine load and speed, where turbine‐bypass operation typically occurs.

The development of a new angioplasty balloon from a new material can be a long and arduous process that may take months. These balloons must meet some very stringent requirements such as high rated burst pressure with minimal wall thickness. The purpose of this thesis is to help reduce the amount of time invested in the experimental development stages of these medical balloons. This can be achieved with the aid of a cycle-to-cycle controller. The controller presented here may be simplistic, but it has shown that with further testing and modeling, it has the potential to completely replace the trial-and-error method of balloon development in use today.

The objective of this thesis is to study a cycle-to-cycle control approach called Terminal Iterative Learning Control (TILC) and apply it to the process of plastic sheet heating in a thermoforming oven. Until now, adjustments to the oven heater temperature setpoints have been made manually by a human operator following a trial and error approach. This approach causes financial losses, because plastic sheets are wasted during the period of time when the adjustments are made at the beginning of a production run. Worse, the heater setpoints are subject to modification because of variation in the ambient temperature, which has an important impact on the sheet reheat process.
The TILC approach is analyzed by studying the closed-loop system in the discrete cycle domain through the use of the z-transform. The system, which has dynamic behaviour in the time domain, becomes a static linear mapping in the cycle domain. One can then apply on this equivalent system a traditional control approach, while considering that the system output is sampled once at the end of the cycle. On the other hand, from the standpoint of the real system, this control approach can be viewed as cycle-to-cycle control.
The stability and rate of convergence of the TILC algorithm can be analyzed through the location of the closed-loop system poles in the cycle domain. This analysis is relatively easy for a first-order TILC but becomes more complex for a higher-order TILC algorithm. The singular value decomposition (SVD) is used to simplify the convergence analysis while decoupling the system in the cycle domain. The SVD technique can be used to facilitate the design of higher-order TILC algorithms.
Internal Model Control (IMC) is another approach that can make the ILC design easier, because there is only one parameter per filter to adjust. The IMC technique has an interesting feature. In the case where the system is nominal, the closed-loop transfer function of the system is the same as the IMC filter's transfer function. Therefore, the adjustment of the filter parameter allows the designer to select the desired system response.
For industrial processes such as thermoforming ovens, it is important that the systems controlled by TILC algorithms are stable and have good performance. For thermoforming ovens, the terminal sheet temperature response must not be too oscillatory from cycle to cycle, since this may lead to high heater temperature setpoints. In the most serious case, high heater temperatures can cause the sheet to melt and spill on the heating elements at the bottom of the oven.
The performance aspect must not be neglected, since it is important to minimize the number of wasted plastic sheets, particularly at process startup. To avoid such waste of time and material, it is necessary that the TILC algorithm converge as quickly as possible. However, the robustness and performance objectives are conflicting and an acceptable compromise must be achieved. The control engineer must define specifications to describe these two constraints. Tools such as the Hinfinity Mixed-Sensitivity Analysis and mu-Analysis can be used to check the compliance of a given TILC algorithm with the robustness and performance specifications defined before the analysis. One can therefore compare various TILC algorithms quantitatively, through a computed measure obtained with one of the two approaches. These same tools can be used for the design of TILC algorithms, using weighting functions representing the specifications.
Simulation and experimental results obtained on industrial thermoforming machines show the effectiveness of the various approaches in this thesis. Many examples are also presented throughout the chapters.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of 5E learning cycle on sixth grade students&rsquo
mathematics achievement on and attitudes toward mathematics. The study was carried out in a public school in one of the towns of the Central Anatolia Region with 28 sixth-grade elementary school students. One group pretest-posttest design was used. Mathematics Achievement Test and Mathematics Attitude Scale were administered to collect the necessary data. The instruction will be applied by the researcher five hours per week in a 15-week. The data were analyzed by using one-way repeated measures analysis of variance and a paired-samples t-test. According to the results of the study it was found that there was a statistically significant change in mathematics achievement of sixth grade students who participated in the instruction based on 5E learning cycle over three time periods (pre-intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up). There was only no statistically significant mean difference between post-intervention and follow-up mathematics achievement. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant decrease in mean scores of attitudes toward mathematics from prior intervention to after intervention.

This dissertation describes the most comprehensive study to date of the diurnal cycle of air pollution in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal -- a bowl-shaped mountain valley of two million people with a growing air pollution problem but little past research. Field measurements and computer simulations were used to study the interplay of emissions and ventilation. From September 2004 through June 2005, CO (carbon monoxide), ozone, PM10 (particles smaller than 10 micrometers), wind speed and direction, solar radiation, temperature, and humidity were continuously measured east of Kathmandu. Sensors towers and mountains measured the diurnal cycle of the vertical temperature structure and stability. A sodar measured the mixed layer height and upper-level winds. Bag sampling provided the diurnal cycle of CO on mountains, passes and around the valley. Winds were measured on a mountain pass and ozone on a mountaintop. Patterns of air pollution and meteorology in the valley showed remarkable day-to-day similarity, with daily twin peaks of CO and PM10, a noon ozone maximum, afternoon westerly winds, and a stagnant cold pool at night. On mountaintops at night, ozone remained high, while CO dropped to regional background levels.
(cont.) The meso-scale meteorological model MM5 was adapted to the Kathmandu Valley for days in February and May 2005. It was able to capture the essential features of the valley's meteorology and was used to address three specific questions: The break-up of the valley's temperature inversion was found to be dominated in February by up-slope winds on the valley rim, plus subsidence over the valley center; in May surface heating of the valley bottom also played a major role. The pathways of pollutant transport out of the valley were found to be up the valley rim slopes in the morning, but out the eastern and southern passes in the afternoons. At night pollutants remained within the valley except near the river outlet. They were lifted off the ground at night and re-circulated in the morning. The eulerian chemistry transport model CAMx, was used in tracer mode, with MM5 meteorology to simulate the emission, transport and removal of CO from the Kathmandu Valley. The simulations were limited by the accuracy of Kathmandu's emissions inventory, especially the spatial distribution of emissions.

This work focuses on a comparative analysis among three compressor inlet air cooling techniques using a thermodynamic approach to simulate the gas turbine cycle. Firstly, a Base Case is tested to determine the gas turbine performance without any cooling method. The effect of site altitude on the power output gas turbine even without any cooling technique is also simulated. After, the evaporative cooling, absorption and mechanical refrigeration chillers are studied under different ambient temperature and relative humidity. Results showed that the cooling potential of the evaporative system is dependent of its effectiveness, while the absorption chiller cooling load is determined by pre-established compressor inlet air temperature. For the mechanical chiller method, however, it is necessary also to consider the power demand required by the vapour refrigerant compression. It is important to observe that although the absorption chiller has been the more suitable cooling method, it is only a realizable solution if the exhaust gases heat are available and with adequate discharge temperature. Furthermore, the gas turbine analysis is carried out at two brazilian locations: Campos/RJ and Goiania/GO. The monthly power output gain offered by the evaporative cooling method is low due to its intrinsic limitation, the ambient wet-bulb temperature. Further, the mechanical chiller system provided a considerable improvement in power output monthly results. However, the best power output increment is reached when the absorption chiller system is employed. Besides, a preliminary economic analysis showed that evaporative cooling offered the lowest unit electric energy cost, but associated with the lesser incremental power generation potential. On the other hand, the chillers systems are more expensive, while provide larger values of incremental electric energy. Results also showed that the cooling techniques allow obtaining a considerable increase in power generation with a lower cost in comparison with the gas turbine plant without any cooling method.

In the models analyzed in this paper, there exists an incumbent politician with one objective, two choices, and voters who remember the past differently. The politician's primary goal is to get reelected, which is done by maximizing the number of votes on the day of election. The politician can increase their chances of reelection if they influence the state of the economy over time and ensure the economy is in its 'best' state on the days leading up to the election. In conducting this research, I wanted to study how different rates of memory decay influences the choices the politician makes during the course of their term. Also, I wanted to explore how long a politician would wait to have an election if that were a choice they could make. I found that voters who remember more of the past place a greater constraint on the incumbent leading to moderate fluctuations in the economy and frequent elections.

Centrosomes are organelles that promote microtubule growth. Normally, a single centrosome duplicates once each cell cycle to guide assembly of a bipolar mitotic spindle, ensuring that each daughter cell inherits an equal complement of the genome and a single centrosome. Centrosomes are composed of a pair of ‘mother-daughter’ centrioles and, during duplication, each mother centriole assembles one daughter at a single site. However, mother centrioles can inappropriately assemble multiple daughters, thereby generating centriole amplification (or overduplication), resulting in multipolar spindle assembly and, consequently, chromosome missegration - a driving force for chromosomal instability/aneuploidy which induces birth defects, miscarriage, and tumorigenesis. We have elucidated how the cell cycle control program regulates the centriole duplication machinery to limit centriole duplication to one event per cell cycle via the cell cycle-dependent regulation of Ana2/STIL and PLK4 degradation. In the case of the centrosome licensing factor Plk4, we found that autophosphorylation promotes its own destruction during interphase, which is then counteracted by the Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A) in complex with its Twins (tws) regulatory subunit during mitosis. This promotes stabilization of Plk4 and thus allows for the licensing of the mother centriole, making it competent to duplicate during the proceeding S-phase. While PP2Atws plays a positive role in regulating Plk4 to promote centriole duplication, we found that PP2A complexed with the Well-rounded (wrd) and Widerborst (wdb) regulatory subunits negatively regulates Ana2 by promoting its degradation to limit centriole duplication. PP2Awrd/wdb dephosphorylates numerous serine/threonine residues residing in Ana2, including several CDK phosphorylation consensus motifs. We found that CDK1/cycA and CDK2/cycE phosphorylate these residues to promote Ana2 stabilization from S-phase, the start of centriole duplication, to M-phase, the start of centriole duplication licensing. Interestingly, we found that the tumorigenic SV40 virus protein Small Tumor Antigen (ST) amplifies centrioles by targeting the PP2A complex to stabilize Plk4 as well as Ana2, underscoring the oncogenic importance of these newly discovered centriole duplication pathways. Finally, we shed insight into the mechanism for centriole amplification upon Ana2 stabilization by showing that Ana2 associates with Plk4 to promote Plk4 kinase activity as well as Plk4 stabilization.

The development of a new angioplasty balloon is a time consuming process. This thesis aims at reducing the amount of time and materials spent on the experimental stage of the development of new angioplasty balloons. This can be achieved by building a nonlinear neural network model of the balloon forming process and implementing an off-line cycle-to-cycle controller. The controller can learn from the previous experiments and provide better input parameters for improving the quality of the next balloons formed in the process. It is shown in the experimental test results that the neural network model can provide accurate estimates of the process outputs. The neural network model combined with a cycle-to-cycle control strategy has the potential to replace the trial-and-error approach to balloon development that is commonly applied today.

This work contains an exposition and analysis of Brazilian economic thought as found in books, specialized periodicals in the field of economics, and governmental writings between 1945 and 1964. A systematization of that thought is offered along with a reproduction of the debates held between the distinct currents of economic thought within the country. The economic thought covered herein has been politically engaged in the discussion of the Brazilian process of industrialization. The key organizing concept that gives unity to our account is that of "developmentalism", seen as the ideology of transforming Brazilian society through an economic project of state-supported industrialization as a way to overcome underdevelopment. In the introductory section and serving as a link between economic theory and Brazilian thinking, an exposition is made of the basic elements of ECLA'S analysis, which served as the major theoretical support to the opposition to liberalism in Brazil. The main body of the work is divided into two parts. In Part I a description is made of the essential features of the five major currents of thought found in the period covered by this study, i.e., three variables of developmentalism (private sector, "non-nationalist" public sector, and "nationalist" public sector), neo-liberalism (to the "right" of developmentalism), and the socialist current (to its "left"). In each current of thought emphasis is given to the work of their most representative economists, with special reference to the thought of Eugenio Guidin, Roberto Simonsen, Roberto Campos and Celso Furtado. A chapter is added to cover Ignacio Rangel's thinking. In Part II of the work an account is given of the evolution of the developmentalist controversy and an assessment is made of its historical determinants. For that purpose, a periodization has been selected on the basis of the movement of economic ideas. The key concept adopted, i.e. the idea of an "idealogical cycle of developmentalism", as well as the entire organization of the text, aim to explain the historical significance of Brazilian economic thought in its connections with the movement of Brazilian history itself.

Purpose                               The main purpose of this study is to test in which part of the economic cycle that generates the best results on corporate acquisitions for the acquirer in the short-term. The study examines the Swedish market and has the aim to study both domestic and foreign acquisitions made by Swedish acquirers. The study also has a purpose of examining if there is a difference in results with domestic acquisitions and foreign acquisitions.   Theory The theoretical perspective will include previous research, concepts and theories. The theoretical framework includes Efficient market hypothesis, The random walk theory and the Non-random walk theory.  Method This study undertakes a quantitative approach with a deductive reasoning. The event study includes a 10 day event window (t-4, t+5). It is an event study that examines 100 acquisitions listed on the Nasdaq OMX Stockholm during the time period 2008- 2018.  Results Data has been collected from the databases Zephyr, Orbis and Nasdaq OMX Nordic. In the empirical foundation AAR and CAR is presented. The results show that it is better to make acquisitions during a upturn in the short-term perspective. The results also show a very slim difference between domestic and foreign acquisitions.

This research theme is originated from a development project that is going on in South Africa, for the design and construction of a closed cycle gas turbine plant using gas-cooled reactor as the heat source to generate 115 MW of electricity. South African Power utility company, Eskom, promotes this developmental work through its subsidiary called PBMR (Pebble Bed Modular Reactor). Some of the attractive features of this plant are the inherent and passive safety features, modular geometry, small evacuation area, small infrastructure requirements for the installation and running of the plant, small construction time, quick starting and stopping and also low operational cost. This exercise is looking at the operational aspects of a closed cycle gas turbine, the finding of which will have a direct input towards the successful development and commissioning of the plant. A thorough understanding of the fluid dynamics in this three-shaft system and its transient performance analysis were the two main objectives of this research work. A computer programme called GTSI, developed by a previous Cranfield University research student, has been used in this as a base programme for the performance analysis. Some modifications were done on this programme to improve its control abilities. The areas covered in the performance analysis are Start-up, Shutdown and Load ramping. A detailed literature survey has been conducted to learn from the helium Turbo machinery experiences, though it is very limited. A critical analysis on the design philosophy of the PBMR is also carried out as part of this research work. The performance analysis has shown the advantage, disadvantage and impact of various power modulation methods suggested for the PBMR. It has tracked the effect of the operations of the various valves included in the PBMR design. The start-up using a hot gas injection has been analysed in detail and a successful start region has been mapped. A start-up procedure is also written based on this. The analysis on the normal and emergency load rejection using various power modulation devices has been done and it stress the importance of more control facilities during full load rejection due to generator faults. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, using commercial software, has been carried out on some geometry of the PBMR design to find out whether its flow characteristic will have any serious impact on the performance on the cycle during the load control of the plant. The analysis has demonstrated that there will not be much impact on the performance, during load control using pressure level changes, from this geometry. However, some locations in the geometry have been identified as areas where the flow is experiencing comparatively high pressure losses. Recommendations, which include modification in the physical design, were made to improve this. The CFD analysis has extended to a cascade to compare the flow behaviour of Air and Helium with an objective of using air, being inexpensive, to test the helium flow characteristic in a test rig to simulate the behavioural pattern of helium in the PBMR pressure vessel. The specification of a hypothetical test rig and the necessary scaling parameters has been derived from this exercise. This will be useful for designing test rigs during the developmental and operational stage of the PBMR project.
