Le sujet de la thèse —la clarification du concept de plan libre dans l’œuvre architectural de Le Corbusier— s’inscrit dans un cadre général de recherches portant sur les modes de conception architecturale en contexte de modernité. Cette préoccupation prend comme horizon la compréhension des processus qui servent l’architecture comme construction d’idées et qui permettent d’en articuler les différentes phases, depuis l’amont des intentions exprimées par le concepteur, jusqu’à l’aval des expressions prises par la solution, en passant par les moyens qui, précisément, permettent d’articuler une pensée abstraite à un objet concret. C’est un champ d’interrogation qui s’appuie sur le constat d’un double déficit disciplinaire :l’intérêt général porté aux formes de l’architecture plutôt qu’aux processus qui les ont fait naître ;l’absence de vocabulaire réellement partagé des concepts utilisés par la discipline, ce qui forme, dans l’un et l’autre cas, “obstacles” à la connaissance de l’architecture et à son enseignement.<p><p>A cet égard, le concept de plan libre occupe une position de choix. Célèbre « mot-force » du manifeste corbuséen de 1927 —« Les Cinq points d’une nouvelle architecture »—, devenu un concept central —mais aussi “nomade”— de l’historiographie de l’architecture moderne, il se trouve donc à l’articulation des questions relatives à la modernité et à la conception. De plus, une simple confrontation de sa définition originale, tant à l’œuvre de Le Corbusier qu’à l’historiographie du Mouvement Moderne, révèle la polysémie du concept et, en particulier, les ambiguïtés et paradoxes que suscitent sa double interprétation :comme “modèle d’organisation spatiale” d’une part et comme “intention libératoire” de l’autre, au point qu’elle laisse le chercheur perplexe à l’égard de ce qu’en l’état, un tel concept peut bien apporter à la connaissance de l’architecture. <p><p>Pour surmonter ces difficultés d’interprétations, deux hypothèses sont proposées. <p>La première envisage le plan libre comme mode opératoire de “libre” conception propre à Le Corbusier. La seconde renvoie à la construction discursive du plan libre comme oxymore, c’est-à-dire comme figure de rhétorique qui, en associant deux termes de sens contraires, construit un ou plusieurs sens nouveaux. <p><p>En conclusion, leur vérification conduit à interpréter le plan libre comme mode spécifique de conception —qui assure tout autant l’autonomie du créateur que la fertilité du processus de création—, lui-même basé sur un processus récurrent de “mises en tension” et de recherches de nouveaux “équilibres” :du regard dialogique que Le Corbusier porte sur le monde —en particulier sur le processus de modernisation— à l’expression duale qu’il donne à ses compositions. Au final, cette double optique fonde notre interprétation du plan libre comme syncrétisme de la modernité corbuséenne. Elle se valide également comme clés de lecture particulièrement riches pour la compréhension de l’oeuvre corbuséenne et des processus de conception qui l’animent.<p><p>x x x<p>Développement<p><p>Tout au long des chapitres de l’étude, nous nous sommes attaché à interroger le concept de plan libre au-delà des compréhensions conventionnelles et “familières” qu’on pouvait en avoir de prime abord, à savoir :d’une part, le plan libre comme “modèle d’organisation spatiale” —défini par opposition au “plan paralysé”—et, d’autre part, le plan libre comme “intention libératoire”, lequel marque un large désir d’émancipation, en particulier —sans y être restreint— à l’égard des pratiques académiques. Dès le premier chapitre en effet, nous avions montré que ces premières définitions “communes” du plan libre —clairement identifiables tant dans l’œuvre corbuséenne que dans les instrumentalisations dont il fut l’objet par la critique spécialisée— formaient “obstacles”, dans ces deux champs, à une claire compréhension de ce qu’il pouvait signifier.<p><p>Bien que l’on ne puisse douter de la validité des définitions proposées par Le Corbusier lui-même, nous avons dû relever à leur égard un certain nombre d’ambiguïtés ou de contresens qui nous obligeaient à questionner ces termes au-delà de ce qu’on y voit habituellement. De la sorte, nous mettions aussi en évidence qu’il n’y avait pas, dans le concept de plan libre, un, mais bien deux “niveaux de libération” à identifier :d’une part, un mouvement d’émancipation de la nouvelle architecture à l’égard de tout ce qui pouvait, de manière hétéronome, “préformer” sa conception ;d’autre part, une liberté interne au système mis en place, assurant à l’auteur de projet la mise à disposition de moyens innovants et permettant la « permanente mise à l’épreuve » (A. Rivkin) de l’architecture face aux conditions changeantes du projet. <p><p>Ces différentes observations nous invitaient à approfondir la réflexion et, surtout, à la déplacer vers ce processus qui, justement, permettait de lier la “virtualité” de l’intention à la “matérialité” d’une solution, soit le propre de la conception architecturale. En effet, entre ces premières définitions du plan libre qui, déjà, le situaient aux “extrêmes” de la conception architecturale — intention versus expression— il semblait opportun d’en revenir là aussi à l’investigation de cette problématique “intermédiaire” :par quels moyens Le Corbusier passait-il du plan libre comme intention au plan libre comme expression ?<p><p>L’hypothèse fut alors posée de considérer le plan libre corbuséen comme “méta-opérateur” d’une libre conception du projet, le terme désignant selon Robert Prost « l’ensemble des modes opératoires que réclame toute formulation de solution ». Dans ce sens, on pouvait aisément présumer que ce mode de conception était lui-même animé par le regard doctrinal porté par Le Corbusier sur cette même modernité au service de laquelle il avait précisément défini la « nouvelle architecture » et les « Cinq points » qui en étaient « les moyens ». <p><p>L’objectif de nos développements ultérieurs fut dès lors, tout à la fois, de montrer ce “statut” opératoire du plan libre comme libre conception; de déterminer les moyens —procéduraux et substantiels— qui l’organisaient ;de montrer ce qu’ils construisaient dans l’œuvre en termes d’innovation ;de relever, en parallèle, en quoi et comment ils étaient révélateurs du point de vue de Le Corbusier sur la modernité. <p><p>Les hypothèses et l’intérêt des questions soulevées furent définitivement fondés après l’exposé des cadres généraux à l’intérieur desquels elles devaient être discutées :les champs de la conception d’une part et de la modernité de l’autre. C’est l’objet du chapitre 2. <p><p>L’étude s’est alors développée en quatre parties, basées sur des temporalités et/ou des corpus spécifiques et orientées vers des questions particulières. <p><p>Dans un premier temps —chapitre 3—, nous avons pris comme cadre d’interrogation l’exposition du Weissenhof à Stuttgart en 1927, moment de la publication du célèbre manifeste corbuséen des « Cinq points d’une nouvelle architecture » et lieu de la construction de ces maisons par lesquelles Le Corbusier exposa concrètement ses points de vue théoriques. <p><p>Le concept de plan libre y a été évalué à l’aune :des Cinq points dans le cadre desquels il a été énoncé; de l’ossature Dom-Ino qui en fonde l’émergence et la nature particulière; des maisons du Weissenhof qui en concrétisent la portée et les ambitions. Bien que cette matière ait déjà été abondamment retournée par les labours de la critique architecturale, un exposé exhaustif se devait d’être fait pour fonder notre propre compréhension des événements, construire nos propres observations et conclusions, eu égard à nos hypothèses. Par ailleurs, ce chapitre a permis d’éclaircir le mode de fonctionnement des Cinq points et de l’ossature Dom-Ino quant à leurs rôles et objectifs dans le processus de conception corbuséen.<p><p>Dans le 4e chapitre, nous nous sommes plus particulièrement interrogé sur ce qui fondait le choix et la définition de ces moyens particuliers. Il fut donc consacré à l’étude du plan libre comme édification d’une “théorie” du projet. Jamais Le Corbusier n’a produit un discours coordonné sur sa pratique —à la manière du traité d’Alberti— et les nombreux textes par lesquels il commente son œuvre et justifie les Cinq points comme « Eléments objectifs de discussion sur le phénomène architectural » présentent ces questions selon des points de vue fragmentaires :seul l’enchaînement des sources a permis d’extraire des thèmes dont la récurrence, voire la redondance, fait sens. La variation des énoncés des Cinq points que nous avons pu relever invitait par ailleurs à voir là une pensée en “construction” plutôt qu’une doctrine “arrêtée”, le manifeste étant dès lors compris comme un “arrêt sur images” ponctuant le parcours d’une pensée elle-même en permanente évolution. <p><p>Le corpus de cette analyse fut constitué de conférences, articles et livres rédigés par Le Corbusier, pour l’essentiel entre 1918 et la fin des années 20. Sur base de ce matériel, un certain nombre de thèmes récurrents ont été identifiés qui étayent la compréhension de ce que peuvent être les éléments de doctrine qui sous-tendent la conception du projet corbuséen et la manière dont il construit la validation de son propos. L’intérêt de cet examen fut aussi de permettre l’identification de quelques-unes de ces références procédurales qui font partie du fond culturel du concepteur et par lesquelles Le Corbusier organise ses processus de conception à l’égard de ce qui constitue l’architecture comme « problème en soi ». Dans un second temps, la comparaison de ces observations avec ce qui fait, selon Françoise Choay, théorie chez Alberti, a conforté l’idée de ce que cette construction doctrinale était propre à sous-tendre et qualifier un mode de conception et d’en confirmer, pour une part, les moyens de son ambition “émancipatrice”.<p><p>Dans le chapitre 5, nous avons procédé à l’examen de quatre références procédurales de conception que nous avions précédemment identifiées :la re-programmation, la dissociation, l’inversion et la réconciliation des contraires. L’intérêt était double. Il s’agissait, d’une part, de comprendre —et de vérifier— en quoi et comment ces procédures permettaient de rencontrer les objectifs d’une libre conception du projet —ce que nous avons traduit là par leur capacité à innover sur le plan formel et spatial et à assurer une relative autonomie du concepteur— et, d’autre part, de saisir —et montrer— en quoi et comment ils servaient le point de vue de Le Corbusier sur la modernité. Le corpus considéré ici était constitué d’une sélection de réalisations architecturales des années 20. Leur examen permit de saisir concrètement ce vers quoi les procédures conduisaient en examinant ce qu’elles construisaient dans l’œuvre. Bien que non exemptes d’observations personnelles, ces analyses se sont appuyées sur divers travaux antérieurs menés par les exégètes de l’œuvre corbuséenne dont, en particulier, Alan Colquhoun, Colin Rowe, Jacques Lucan, etc, auprès desquels nous avons trouvé matière à étayer nos hypothèses par l’articulation de leurs points de vue au nôtre, réduisant également quelques-unes des fractures de compréhension énoncées dès l’introduction.<p><p>Le chapitre 6 a, quant à lui, été plus particulièrement réservé à l’observation des références substantielles présentes dans le système de conception corbuséen au moment des Cinq points, que ce soit sur un plan concret ou à un horizon théorique. Dès l’exposé introductif de nos hypothèses, nous avions en effet relevé la relative incompatibilité que l’on pouvait discerner dans la mise au point d’un système de conception dont on attendait, d’un côté, qu’il puisse en permanence apporter des réponses innovantes en l’appuyant, de l’autre, sur des références de formes —celles des Cinq points— qui ne pouvaient qu’en restreindre l’ordre des possibilités. Deux discussions nous ont permis, sur le plan théorique au moins, de saisir les raisons de cette incompatibilité :celle de l’autoréférentialité du système d’une part et celle du miroir de l’inversion d’autre part, toutes deux conduisant nécessairement à restreindre le champ de la création à l’ordre d’une forme d’imitation. <p><p>Le chapitre 7, de conclusion, est revenu plus spécifiquement sur la discussion de l’objectif —et des conditions— dans lesquelles Le Corbusier poursuit cette volonté d’autonomie propre à la posture de l’artiste moderne, et l’objective. Si l’on s’accorde à reconnaître que le processus de modernisation à conduit à l’effritement des traditions stabilisatrices sur lesquelles se fondait ce qui faisait “sens commun”, la question est posée, entre autres, de savoir comment créer et objectiver ce “sens commun” à partir d’une vision subjective du “moi” créateur. La démonstration porte là sur la mise en exergue des invariants sur lesquels Le Corbusier fonde ses discours de validation :les principes pérennes qu’il “reconnaît” dans l’histoire, tout autant que les invariants de “l’homme”, qu’ils soient de nature socio-anthropologique, anthropomorphique ou psycho-physiologique. De la sorte, la posture émancipatrice de Le Corbusier se révèle fondée sur le respect d’un cadre normatif, intemporel, par lequel il tente d’objectiver sa propre subjectivité.<p><p>Cette approche duale nous est finalement apparue récurrente à tous niveaux de son processus de conception, et donc comme forgeant l’une de ses spécificités. Quel que soit le niveau auquel on l’envisage, Le Corbusier fonde son approche sur la mise en tension de termes, d’idées ou de figures qu’il oppose et entre lesquels il semble tout à la fois réfléchir, résoudre et exprimer les questions particulières de la conception, visant au final un nouvel équilibre entre les pôles identifiés, ce qu’énonce de manière métaphorique l’oxymore “plan libre”.<p><p><p><br>Doctorat en Art de bâtir et urbanisme<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

This thesis investigates the concept of the symbolic form of architecture. It first focuses on the philosophical foundations for this concept in the works of Ernst Cassirer, Immanuel Kant, Conrad Fiedler, and Theodor Adorno. Then, the development of the modern perception of form in architectural theoreticians, where "modern" architectural theory evolved from an analogical state into a symbolic state, is examined: Karl Bötticherâ s concept of a Junktur and his attempt to transcend the presumed dichotomy in architecture between ornamentation and form is discussed; Gottfried Semper's concept of style and Alois Riegl's concept of motif are presented as reactions against what they saw as the mechanistic reliance on structure as definitive of form in architecture; Louis Sullivan's ornamentation is discussed as an attempt to integrate structure and ornamentation into a morphological whole; Otto Wagner's attempt to purge architecture from analogical responses through a strictly constructional basis for ornamentation is presented; and Adolf Loos' dismissal of decorative ornamentation, since it is an impediment towards true aesthetic judgment, is examined. Finally, a critical review of the symbolist movement in architecture, art, and literature is presented as a movement diametric to the symbolic development in architecture, since it glorified the analogical, and frequently the mimetic. The origins for how the symbolist movement became a denial of clarity center on Emanuel Swedenborg's concept of symbols, and how it was misinterpreted by the symbolists.<br>Master of Architecture

This thesis aims to reveal paradigms associated with the operation of Western architectural oligarchies. The research is an examination into "how" dominant architectural institutions and their figureheads are undermined through the subversive collaboration of younger, unrecognised architects. By appropriating theories found in Jacques Derrida's writings in philosophy, the thesis interprets the evolution of post World War II polemical architectural thinking as a series of political friendships. In order to provide evidence, the thesis involves the rewriting of a portion of modern architectural history, 1949-1987. Modern architectural history is rewritten as a series of three friendship partnerships which have been selected because of their subversive reaction to their respective establishments. They are English architects, Alison Smithson and Peter Smithson; South African born architect and planner, Denise Scott Brown and North American architect, Robert Venturi; and Greek architect, Elia Zenghelis and Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas. Crucial to the undermining of their respective enemies is the friends' collaboration on subversive projects. These projects are built, unbuilt and literary. Warring publicly through the writing of seminal texts is a significant step towards undermining the dominance of their ideological opponents. It also appears that through the making of these projects, the unrecognised architects are able to convert themselves to being recognised as new figureheads. This thesis contends that as a consequence of the power within each of the three friendship partnerships, the architects are enabled to collaborate against the dominant ideology of their respective enemies and gain status. It also contends that a cycle of friendship and warring is the political system by which the institution of modern architecture has historically reengineered itself to suit the times.

This thesis examines the concepts of history and tradition in modern Japan, with an emphasis on the writings of Sei'ichi Shirai (1905--1983). Although Shirai has been considered as one of the most important architects of 20th century Japan, he has also been treated as an obscure figure, no doubt partly because of the enigmatic quality of his writings. A major element that contributed to his obscure status and set him apart from his contemporaries was his understanding of history and tradition.<br>The introductory essay examines the concept of tradition prevalent around Shirai's time: how it was constructed by an a posteriori writing of history and in what ways this is complicated by Shirai's writings. The second portion of the thesis is an annotated translation of two of Shirai's texts demonstrating his attempts to disclose the a priori principles inherent in the unfolding of tradition through history.

Bibliography: leaves 138-149. This thesis investigates the theoretical and practical importance of nomadic ways of life for architecture. Nomadology is a construction of Deleuze and Gattari's 'counter-philosophy' challenging authenticity and propriety, in this case, in the context of architecture. It describes how nomadology may challenge static, permanent, heroically solitary ways of working and dwelling, and suggests strategies - diagramming, ephemerality, movement, and collaboration - as ways of reconciling nomadism and architecture.

Cette thèse de doctorat développe un questionnement de nature épistémologique à propos du domaine architectural et des connaissances qui lui sont associées. La théorie architecturale se distingue par la grande diversité de ses formes, par la multiplicité des acteurs qui la mobilisent et surtout par la grande complexité de l'objet qu'elle vise :l'œuvre architecturale. Pour pouvoir aborder de manière lucide ces différents filtres, nous proposons d'en décoder les origines pour une notion théorique particulière: le contexte de l'œuvre architecturale.<p>Le contexte d'une œuvre rassemble l'ensemble des conditions matérielles, sociocognitives et culturelles qui contribuent à sa signification. Cependant l'interprétation d'un contexte est souvent faite de manière équivoque tant les sources du sens sont multiples et variées pour l'architecture. <p>Un examen rapide de l'évolution de la culture architecturale dans le courant du 20e siècle permet de situer la grande popularité de la question du contexte dans la seconde moitié de ce siècle. L'importance du contexte y apparaissait comme une force effective pour endiguer la crise du sens que connaissait l'architecture. Une sensibilité commune émergea au sein de trois courants architecturaux – appelés dans cette étude la Team 10, les Italiens et les Américains. Tous fondaient leurs interprétations sur l'idée que les conditions matérielles et historiques d'une situation donnée participent à la signification que prend l'œuvre architecturale chez ses habitants. Ils en déduisirent une série de notions originales qui constituent l'objet de cette étude.<p>Au moment du repli théorique amorcé au moment du postmodernisme, ces interprétations furent formalisées au sein de trois doctrines :le structuralisme, le rationalisme et le contextualisme. Dans ce cadre doctrinal, à chaque situation donnée pouvaient correspondre plusieurs contextes élaborés a priori et conditionnant sans détour l'œuvre architecturale qui y prenait place. Ainsi, alors que la signification d'un contexte est liée à sa spécificité, ces interprétations formalisées encourageaient la reproduction de stratégies d'interventions architecturales abstraites de toute contingence. <p>La critique du postmodernisme expliqua ces pratiques caricaturales par l'oubli du rôle actif des auteurs architectes dans le travail d'interprétation du contexte d'une œuvre. Un contexte ne doit pas être interprété seulement en tant que réalité habitée – trouvant son sens chez les habitants de l'œuvre – mais aussi en tant que réalité projetée. – trouvant son sens dans la conception de l'œuvre. <p>La première hypothèse de cette recherche avance qu'au sein des trois courants à l'origine des doctrines du structuralisme, du rationalisme et du contextualisme s'exprimait consciemment cette différence entre réalité habitée et réalité projetée. Si les formalisations doctrinales écartèrent l'importance de l'engagement créatif des architectes dans l'interprétation d'un contexte n'avait pas été oubliée chez les principaux auteurs de ces trois courants. La seconde hypothèse de cette recherche avance que l'interprétation d'un contexte en tant que réalité projetée est nécessaire pour renouveler le sens de l'œuvre qui y est associée. Par l'engagement de l'auteur architecte, peut naître une relation spécifique entre l'œuvre architecturale et son contexte, spécificité garante de la signification.<p>Ces deux hypothèses s'appuient sur deux développements. D'abord un double inventaire des principales notions relatives à la compréhension du contexte de l'œuvre architecturale en tant que réalité habitée et en tant que réalité projetée. Ces inventaires sont illustrés par quelques projets exemplaires traduisant l'impact de ces interprétations sur l'architecture construite. Ensuite par une réflexion théorique plus générale développant la relation possible entre la connaissance architecturale et l'œuvre au sein d'une réalité projetée. The Tehran bazaar has become the object of several studies which focus on the Iranian bazaar’s response to social transformations and its inextricable relation to the history and future of the city. It is these two features that the sociopolitical and architectural discourses tend to fixate upon in describing, defining and analysing the complexity of Iranian marketplaces. This dissertation initially maps the conceptualisations being formulated by the sociopolitical and architectural discourses. In doing so, it identifies what has remained outside of such disciplinary frameworks. By charting the excluded aspects of the Tehran bazaar, this thesis seeks to underline the neglected spatial features that reduce the bazaar to a backdrop of activities. This dissertation intends to consider the bazaar as an event by allowing the potential immanent in this complex urban environment to be expressed. By formulating a theoretical framework informed by the notion of event conceptualised by the French philosopher Michel Foucault, this research seeks to overcome some of the inadequacies of the sociopolitical and architectural discourses and present alternative accounts that can acknowledge the multiplicity of non-reductive narrations.

Ce travail s’intéresse au problème de la relativisation de l’expression architecturale liée à la remise en question, durant le XVIIe siècle, de l’origine divine et de la valeur des canons proportionnels qui sous-tendent la tradition classique. Emblématique de la Querelle qui opposa Claude Perrault et François Blondel au sein de l’Académie royale de Paris, ce problème recevra une formulation privilégiée dans la tradition théorique anglaise qui se caractérise par la volonté de préserver une forme d’objectivité à l’expression formelle tout en cherchant à y intégrer la valeur subjective de l’usage. A travers l’étude de textes esthétiques et de théories d’architecture produits en Angleterre durant le XVIIIe siècle et le début du XIXe siècle, nous avons cherché à identifier les différentes solutions proposées par les théoriciens pour parvenir à concilier le sujet et l’objet dans la forme architecturale et ainsi aboutir à une expression qui autorise l’appropriation individuelle tout en satisfaisant à l’impératif du consensus.<br>Doctorat en Histoire, art et archéologie<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Through discursive essays and poetic narrative, Antithetical Commentaries on X, Y and the Disruption of Being explores the tenuous relationship between modes of measurement and the struggle for human relevance in the post-contemporary digital age. In the introductory essay, “Not the Feather, but the Bird”, I give an overview of the inherent problems of object-oriented ontology, and how it relates to aesthetics and social issues of our times. In the Developmental Overview, I detail how I developed my installation approach and techniques, particularly with regard to the three-way dynamic of the artist:work:viewer relationship and how it can encourage a ‘transgression’ that leads to the possibility of a transformative awareness of being. Subsequently, I present a series of ‘antithetical’ commentaries that neither explain nor expand the installation, rather, they create a non-binary duality that, through an entirely non-linear anti-narrative, work to erode the overlay of personal, civic and collective grids present in the memory space/time referenced in the video, TAG. Finally, in “Grid: Towards a Transgressive Humanism.” I propose a path by which installation art might serve to create transgressive opportunities for viewers, rather than the transcendence sought through religious rituals, which often reinforce stigmas, fears and authoritarian social dynamics, or worse, the reductive loop, of many contemporary approaches to art which proclaim their detachment in wordy displays, essentially leading to a form of aesthetic nihilism. This Transgressive Humanism is not presented as a dogma, but rather a revitalization of the work as a vessel of possibilities, an agent of creative growth for the artist and the viewer.

The following thesis is a 38,400 word document of a part-time PhD by project undertaken at the painting department of The Royal College of Art between October 2002 and September 2008. The purpose of this research has been to reflect on how an expansive interpretation of the architectural model operates as a mode of fragmentary thought for dwelling. I extend critical / theoretical approaches to the use of the model within my art practice, and its equivalent, 'the essay form,' in the written component of the thesis. I begin by deflning the use of the model within a speciflc work I made early in the project, and also discuss the model's ability to operate between more rigidly deflned disciplines of knowledge. I use Benjamin's notion of immanent critique to reflect on the poeticised potential of the model form to unfold information, by probing the rapport between materials and motifs, groupings and spacings and the made and the found. I also show how the process of thought through the material development of the work, informed an equivalent fragmentary approach to writing. In the four main chapters, I attend to a critical pairing four Bruegel paintings and four particular buildings to understand how both painting and building can be revealed as a thought model for dwelling. The chapters in the following order read Bruegel's Fall of Icarus in relation to Casa Malaparte, Procession to Calvary with Melnikov's Cylindical House Studio, The Tower of Babel with Kiesler's unbuilt notion of The Endless House, and flnally the two dwellings initiated by Wittgenstein with Hunters in the Snow. I conclude by returning briefly to a recent piece of my own work to consider how the model of thought for dwelling has developed within my current practice.

My art distills my relationship to spirituality, digital culture, and the practices and side-effects therein, into a simplified visual language. The work manifests in the form of paintings, drawings, and light sculptures. Meditation and mindfulness training are a large part of my influence and interests. I often wonder how mindfulness practice can be mirrored in my artwork, not only in my process for creating the work, but also with what the resulting imagery does for the viewer. My intention is to provide an art form that invites one to look and experience one’s own capacity to observe, without the need for immediate intellectualization. I wish to offer people an opportunity to focus their attention on the phenomenological sensations that emanate from the art, to take a step back from the conceptual part of the mind, and step into a part that’s more fundamental to our moment to moment reality.

En effet, la morphologie architecturale met en vue une recomposition à partir d’une décomposition : elle affirme et présente un processus de négation. Comment comprendre ces formes architecturales paradoxales qui expriment leur propre abolition et quelles sont les différentes manifestations de cette négativité morphologique dans l’architecture contemporaine ? En effet, bien que se défendant de toute attention à la forme, les architectures qualifiées de non-rhétoriques par l’historien J. Lucan (A. Lacaton &amp; J.-P. Vassal, OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen etc.), en cherchant précisément à faire disparaître toute expressivité morphologique, ne participent-elles pas d’une même visée que le déconstructivisme, lequel opère ce retrait de la forme de manière explicite ?Une première partie de cette recherche se propose d’explorer différentes approches d’architectes et de philosophes qui ont consacré une partie ou l’ensemble de leurs travaux à l’imagination et à la poïétique des formes : J. Lucan, D. Guibert, D. Raynaud, E. Cassirer, G. Bachelard, G. Durand. Dans une deuxième partie, dans le sillage de l’œuvre d’H. Maldiney qui établit un parallèle entre Art et existence, j’inscris ma recherche dans une herméneutique existentielle de ces formes négatives que j’ai nommées : antéformes. Mon hypothèse s’attache à proposer qu’au fondement négatif de notre rapport au monde répond une mise en forme négative des morphologies architecturales. En attaquant leur propre forme, c’est-à-dire le sens de la mise en forme proprement dite, les antéformes posent la question de ce qui fonde leur existence et y répondent en projetant dans l’objet une manière de se rapporter au monde. Certains concepteurs contemporains donnent à voir en partie et projettent à leur insu leur propre expérience vécue et désirante de la quête cherchante de forme qui les habite lors de la conception. Dans cette recherche, je suggère ainsi d’établir une analogie entre l’état poïétique et l’expression d’une forme négativée de l’œuvre. En outre, je m’emploie à repérer, proposer et articuler dans une architectonique des antéformes, différentes modalités de néantisation de la forme architecturale pouvant correspondre à des styles ou orientations de la présence proposés par le philosophe. Je développe ainsi des schèmes stylistiques fondés sur des tendances pulsionnelles ou qualités énergétiques tensives. Enfin, je propose que les antéformes expriment un ça-voir poïétique de la crise qui les fondent, les émotivent, et témoignent de cette épreuve surmontée. Il s’agit ici de réactiver la double implication originaire du verbe poïen : à la fois accomplissement et novation. Tout travail poïétique, en tant qu’il demeure porté par une exigence de singularité, implique l’imprévisibilité de l’objet qui émergera de son processus de conception. Les antéformes sont un appel à concevoir au sens plein du terme tout autant qu’un appel à un rapport propre (authentique) à l’existence ; lequel s’envisage, non comme un Moi ou un cogito qui se pose, mais comme le processus d’individuation d’un Soi. Celui-ci ne peut exister sans un travail incessant de désindividuation préalable dont les antéformes sont le témoignage. L’acte poïétique invite, non à choisir parmi des possibles préalables, mais précisément à engendrer sa propre forme d’être au monde<br>In contemporary historiography, deconstructivism is a significant moment in a negative expression of form. Indeed, architectural morphology puts forward a recomposition from a decomposition: it affirms and presents a process of negation. How can we understand these paradoxical architectural forms that express their own destruction? What are the different manifestations of this morphological negativity in contemporary architecture? Although defending themselves from any attention to forms, architectures described as non-rhetorical by the historian J. Lucan (A. Lacaton - J.-P. Vassal, OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, etc.), by seeking precisely to remove all morphological expressiveness, would they not participate, like deconstructivism, which removes forms explicitly? First, we explore different approaches of architects and philosophers, such as J. Lucan, D. Guibert, D. Raynaud, E. Cassirer, G. Bachelard, G. Durand, who devoted some or all of their work to the imagination and the poïetics. Second, in the spirit of H. Maldiney, which draws a parallel between Art and existence, I build my work on the existential hermeneutics of these negative forms, which I have named: antéformes. My hypothesis is that the negative basis of our relationship to the world responds to a negative shaping of architectural morphologies. By attacking their own form, that is to say the manner in which they are shaped, the antéformes question their own existence and respond to it by projecting into the object a way of relating to the world. Some contemporary designers partially reveal and project their own experience of searching for the form, that drives them during conception.In this research, I suggest an analogy between the poietic state and the expression of a negative form of the work. Besides, I work to identify, propose and articulate in an architectonic of the antéformes, different aspects of the nothingness of the architectural form that may correspond to styles or orientations of presence proposed by philosophers. I thus develop stylistic schemes based on drive tendencies or tensile energy qualities. Finally, I propose that the antéformes express a poietic sense of crisis that melts them, emotes them, and testifies to this experience.The aim here is to reactivate the dual implication originating from the poien verb : at once accomplishment and novation. Any poetic work, as it remains driven by a requirement of singularity, implies the unpredictability of the object that will emerge from its design process. The antéformes are a call to conceive in the full sense of the word as well as a call for a proper (authentic) relationship to existence; which sees itself, not as the emerge of the self or cogito, but as the process of individuation of a Self. This one can not exist without an incessant work of preliminary désindividuation for which antéformes are the testimony. The poietic act invites, not to choose among possible prerequisites, but precisely to generate its own form of being in the world

Ce travail, pluridisciplinaire, étudie l'histoire du théâtre de Bordeaux depuis sa création en mille sept cent quatre-vingt jusqu'à sa dernière restauration en mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix. Il est centré sur l'architecture et ce qui, dans les modifications dont il a été l'objet, a permis de perpétuer, dans l'expérience esthétique qu'il procure, une relation narcissique continue depuis deux siècles. Ces restaurations successives n'ont donc pas été étudiées en fonction du modèle originel, toujours trahi, mais en tenant compte des climats successifs dans le temps, de l'évolution des idées et du gout. En parallèle, ce travail s'est intéressé à l'évolution de la notion de patrimoine, de restauration et de conservation depuis deux siècles et montre que les visions du théâtre sont toujours en concordance avec les théories patrimoniales, même si, pendant plus de cent ans, l'architecture qu'il incarne n'est jamais prise en compte par les théoriciens des monuments historiques. La dernière partie est consacrée à la restauration de mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix et aux problèmes philosophiques qu'elle soulève<br>TThis broad study covers the bordeaux theatre history from its erection in 1780 up to its latest restoration in 1990 with architecture as a central theme and including all the modifications which, through aesthetic experiences, have maintained the narcissistic relationship over two centuries. Thus the successive restoration works are not considered as compared to the original piece, bound to have been altered, but has resulting from successive trends of ideas and tastes. Similarly this study investigates the changes occured in the three concepts of heritage, restoration and conservation over that same period of time, from which it appears that whatever are the feelings concerning the theatre, they are always in line with the prevailing views on heritage even so the architectural concepts embodied in the original building have been over looked by theoreticians on historic architecture for more than a hundred years. The final part of this study is devoted to the nineteen ninety restoration works and their philosophical implications

Le paysage n'est pas uniquement l'apparition des matières naturelles permettant à la modernité d'objectiver l'esthétique de la nature. Il se caractérise aussi par l'apparition du cosmos, du monde habité par les hommes. Cette idée existentielle est fondée sur le fait que l'homme, l'être ayant du corps qui habite dans les mondes humains (corporéité et mondanité), voit la nature en tant que quelque chose, et non la nature en elle-même. Modern ideas, which are characteristics of naturalist, essentialist and materialist aspects, largely influence the concepts and methods utilized to represent nature. Landscapes are more than simply the appearance of natural matter that allows modernity to objectivize the aesthetic of nature. It is also characteristic of the appearance of the "cosmos," of worlds inhabited by human beings. This existential idea is founded on the fact that humans, a being having a body which inhabits the human world, see nature as something and not nature in itself. In this human reality, quests of nature are motivated and realized according to specific processes and specific forms, though dualistic and modern ideas produce contradictions, notably the fact that separation is created between humans and nature, between sprit and matter. Le Corbusier est un architecte qui non seulement construit, mais qui n’a de cesse de dire comment on doit construire. Faisant le pari de la force et de la cohérence de la pensée corbuséenne, le présent travail vise à interroger l’œuvre théorique de l’architecte au prisme de l’une des ses «colorations» les plus propres, à savoir sa dimension foncièrement normative. À partir d’un tel essai de reconstruction de la pensée corbuséenne par le biais du concept de norme, il s’agira de poursuivre un triple objectif : premièrement, chercher à comprendre pourquoi Le Corbusier rejette les normes sur lesquelles reposait l’architecture académique de son temps et pour quelles raisons il entend lui substituer une architecture authentiquement moderne ; deuxièmement, montrer en quoi et selon quelles modalités théoriques et pratiques l’œuvre de Le Corbusier constitue une tentative de refondation ou de recommencement de la discipline architecturale sur des bases normatives renouvelées ; enfin, tenter de saisir les rapports entre le domaine de la norme et ce qui l’excède, à savoir le champ du «hors-norme» (la beauté, le génie, l’espace indicible)<br>Le Corbusier is an architect who not only builds, but also never stops to tell us how to build. The present work aims at questioning the architect’s theoretical work through one of its most singular dimension, i.e. its fundamentally normative aspect. By trying to reconstruct the corbusean thought by the use of the concept of norm, I pursue a triple purpose : firstly, trying to understand why Le Corbusier rejects the normative basis underpinning the historicist architecture of its time and why he wants to substitute an authentic modern architecture for it ; secondly, trying to demonstrate how Le Corbusier’s theoretical and practical work constitutes an attempt at rebuilding the architectural discipline on brand new normative standards (the ‘échelle humaine’) ; finally, I try to grasp the relations between what is part of the normative realm and what necessarily exceeds this sphere according to the architect (beauty, genius, ineffable space)

La thèse intitulée "L'architecture religieuse coloniale à Rio de Janeiro : une méthodologie d'étude" repose sur l'analyse de l'oeuvre architecturale religieuse de Rio de Janeiro. Celle-ci représente ce que Rio a produit de plus grand et de meilleur depuis sa fondation jusqu'au début du XIXième siècle. Le présent travail vise à comprendre la signification esthétique de l'architecture des églises coloniales de Rio et à la rattacher aux aspects historiques de la ville ainsi qu'au contexte architectural luso-brésilien qui lui est contemporain. L'objet principal de cette thèse demeure néanmoins l'élaboration d'une méthodologie d'étude. Dans ce sens, le processus qui aboutit aux conclusions sur l'architecture religieuse coloniale de Rio est plus important que le contenu des conclusions elles-mêmes. Le présent travail se propose également à servir de base à des recherches futures et à constituer un ensemble de données sur l'architecture coloniale de Rio. Ce qui justifie l'inclusion dans notre étude des relevés que nous avons effectués<br>This thesis is based on the in-depth analysis of the architectural religious work carried out in Rio de Janeiro. The objective of this study is to examine the esthetic meaning contained in the architectural traits of colonial churches built in Rio. Furthermore, it establishes a link between the various historical events affecting this city within the contemporary luso-brazilian context. Notwithstanding the above, the main purpose of this thesis remains the elaboration of a study methodology. Bearing this in mind, the process followed leads to the conclusions covering Rio's colonial religious architecture, but enhances its own importance over the final conclusions established. This paper is to serve as a data base for future research in this field and, in view of the above, it includes a set of data covering Rio's colonial architecture, and different documents and statements of Rio's colonial architecture

During the eighteenth century, the dominant rhetorical and explanatory power of civic humanism was gradually challenged by the rise of a new organising language in political economy. Political economic thought permitted radically different descriptions of what laudable private and public behaviour might be: it proposed that self-interest was often more beneficial to society at large than public-mindedness; that luxury had its uses and might not be a threat to liberty and political integrity; that landownership was no particular guarantee of virtue or disinterest; and that there was nothing inherently superior about frugality and self-sufficiency. These new ideas about civil society formed the intellectual basis of a large body of verse written during the long eighteenth century (at mid-century in particular), in which poets engaged enthusiastically with political economic arguments and defences of commercial activity, and celebrated the wealth and plenty of Britain as a modern trading nation. The work of my thesis is to examine a contradiction in the way in which these political economic ideas were handled. Forward-looking and confident poetry on public themes did not develop pioneering forms to suit the modernity of its outlook: instead, poets articulated such themes in verse by appropriating and reframing traditional genres, which in some cases involved engaging with inherited moral values and philosophical preferences entirely at odds with the intellectual material in hand. This inventive kind of generic revision is the central interest of the thesis. It aims to describe a number of problematic meeting points between new political economic thought and handed-down poetic formulae, and it will focus attention on some of the ways in which poets manipulated the forms and tropes they inherited in order to manage – and make the most of – the resulting contradictions.

Cette idée a été soutenue par un mouvement architectural cohérent, l’architecture organique, formant une tradition constructive alternative traversant tout le XXe siècle et repérable dans le monde entier. En considérant qu’une pratique architecturale adaptée favorise une relation apaisée entre l’homme et son environnement bâti ainsi qu’une reconnexion entre l’homme et son environnement naturel, l’organicisme peut véritablement être considéré comme une architecture environnementale. Cependant, en dépit de ce que nous pensions à l’origine, cette tradition architecturale ne se définit que difficilement par sa forme. Il faut plutôt en passer par la théorie architecturale pour voir émerger une vision commune à un ensemble de théoriciens ou d’architectes. Cette manière de pratiquer ou d’envisager l’architecture est lisible dans les idées de Kenneth Frampton ou de Christian Norberg-Schulz, dans les positionnements sur la question centrale de la fonction en architecture ou à travers la théorie de la pure visibilité et son corolaire, la connaissance corporelle. Bruno Zevi, entre autres, apporte également sa pierre à l’édifice théorique mais c’est Frank L. Wright qui est le grand bâtisseur de l’architecture organique au sens propre comme au figuré. Il n’en est cependant pas le seul pratiquant et les carrières d’autres architectes majeurs comme Eladio Dieste, Hassan Fathy, Gaudí, les époux Griffin, Hundertwasser, Alistair Samuel Knox, Rudolf Steiner ou Gustav Stickley notamment, peuvent être examinés avec intérêt sous l’angle de l’architecture environnementale<br>What if architecture could be lived as an oriented element of intercession between human and his environment ? This idea was supported by a coherent architectural movement, organic architecture, forming an alternative building tradition through the entire 20th century and noticeable throughout the world. Considering that an appropriate architectural practice promote a peaceful relationship between man and his built environment and a reconnection between man and his natural environment, organicism can truly be considered as an environmental architecture. However, in spite of what we thought originally, this architectural tradition is not easy to define by its formal aspect. Rather, it is necessary to go through architectural theory to see the emergence of a common vision to a group of theorists and architects. This way of practising or considering architecture can appears in the ideas of Kenneth Frampton or Christian Norberg-Schulz, in the opinion on the key question of function in architecture, or through the theory of pure visibility and its corollary, physical knowledge. Bruno Zevi, among others, also contributes to the theoretical edifice but it is Frank L. Wright who is the great builder of organic architecture both literally and figuratively. However, he is not the only proponent of this type of architecture and the careers of other major architects such as Eladio Dieste, Hassan Fathy, Antoni Gaudí, the Griffin’s, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Alistair Samuel Knox, Rudolf Steiner or Gustav Stickley, especially, can be analyzed with interest from the perspective of environmental architecture

Christianity and Hip-Hop culture are often said to be at odds with one another. One is said to promote a lifestyle of righteousness and love, while the other is said to promote drugs, violence, and pride. As a result, the public has portrayed these two institutions as conflicting with no willingness to resolve their perceived differences. This paper will argue that there has always been a healthy conversation between Hip-Hop and Christianity since Hip-Hop’s inception. Using sources like Hip-Hop lyrics, theologians, historians, autobiographies, sermons, and articles that range from Ma$e to Tipper Gore, this paper will look at the conversation between Hip-Hop and Christianity that has been ongoing for decades. This thesis will show why that conversation is essential for the church and necessary for Hip-Hop artists to express themselves fully. This paper will show rap and Hip-Hop culture to be a complex institution with its own theology, history, and prophets – that uses its own voice to express how urban youth view not only their lives but also how God and the church are present in their lives.

Ce travail s'articule autour de deux thèmes : - l’Opera possède des spécificités qui se retrouvent de manière privilégiée dans son décor. Au service du rêve éveillé lyrique, le décor ne s'inféode à aucune autre règle qu'à celles de l’opéra, ce qui induit une esthétique originale. - Les rapports théoriques et historiques du décor d’Opera avec les beaux-arts puis avec les arts plastiques montrent son indépendance à leur égard. Le décor d’Opera est une entité artistique visuelle se développant dans l'espace en fonction du temps d'une partition musicale : c'est un "chronotrope" (M. Baktine). Cette recherche ne porte que sur le décor d’opéra, à l'exclusion du costume et du décor de ballet ; en revanche, elle ne s'assigne d'autres limites dans le temps et dans l'espace que celles de l'histoire de l’opéra lui-même<br>The research focuses on two themes : - opera possesses distinctive esthetic aspects which are specifically echoed in its stage scenery. An opera's setting obeys no other rule than those of the opera itself ; it serves the aspirations of a waking dream, thus producing an original esthetic form. - the theoretical and historical relationships of operatic stage setting with the several visual arts confirm that scenery exists independently from them. Operatic stage setting is a visual artistic entity which unfolds in space according the beat of a musical score : it is a "chronotopos" (M. Baktine). This work deals only with operatic stage setting, to the exclusion of both costume and ballet scenery. But it has no other limits than those of opera's history

Ce travail envisage Learning from Las Vegas, le livre co-écrit par les architectes Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown et Steven Izenour, du point de vue de sa réception par la critique journalistique, architecturale et universitaire entre 1968 et 1988. Le sens et la valeur de ce texte tels qu'ils sont aujourd'hui unanimement reconnus, Y apparaissent comme le fruit d'une interaction constante pendant vingt années entre ses auteurs et ses lecteurs. Dans une première partie, est décrite l'apparition de Learning from Las Vegas dans le contexte politique et culturel particulièrement agité de la fin des années 1960, et la polémique qui immédiatement s'en est suivie dans le milieu architectural tant américain qu’européen. Dans une seconde partie, l’attention se porte sur le rôle que jour Learning from Las Vegas, parmi d’autres ouvrages, dans la reconfiguration idéologique qui accompagne la critique du modernisme au cours des années 1970. Dans une troisième partie enfin, il est expliqué la manière dont le livre devient ensuite l’un des principaux manifestes du postmodernisme américain, et comment à ce titre il rattache ce mouvement à la tradition de l’avant-gardisme. On voit là aussi comment il inaugure à cette occasion un nouveau genre littéraire, le manifeste rétroactif. En présentant finalement ce classique de la littérature architecturale contemporaine comme le résultat d’une construction sociale et historique, ce travail contribue à expliciter les processus de formation de la théorie et de la culture architecturale dans l’après-modernisme.

Il arrive que l’architecture soit critiquée pour les usages qu’elle a « produits » ou ceux qu’elle a « interdits » (un certain désaveu des grands ensembles en est symptomatique). Parfois, la critique porte justement sur le décalage entre l’intention d’origine et l’effet réellement produit (les grands ensembles étaient à l’époque pétris d’humanisme). Mais la connaissance de cette intention fait défaut, et engage donc à un travail de recherche.Les théories de la conception ont pour objet une certaine intelligibilité de la conception. Mais il semble que l’activité de conception explicitée par ces théories, se concentre essentiellement sur l’artefact architectural pris dans ses dimensions tangibles et matérielles. S’intéressant au contraire à la « réception » imaginée par l’architecte, la question se pose de savoir si nous sommes en mesure de connaître la conception de modes de vie, l’invention d’usages et d’expériences… L’ancrage dans les sciences de la conception nous engage à nous détacher d’approches telles que celle de la sociologie des usages, puisque nous nous intéressons à des récepteurs qui n’existent pas encore et ne sont que représentés ou anticipés. Le concept de « conception de la réception » construit dans ce travail signifie cette appropriation de la réalité de la réception par la cognition des concepteurs. En effet, le phénomène dont l’explicitation est visée est un processus de pensée, une capacité mentale.Ce travail définit deux corpus imbriqués. D’une part l’architecturologie qui constitue un cas de théorie de la conception dont il est possible de faire l’étude épistémologique critique. D’autre part, les projets de Bernard Tschumi et de Rem Koolhaas pour le parc de La Villette en 1982 qui constituent des cas de processus de conception et un terrain d’application pour une étude architecturologique.— L’architecturologie est choisie comme cas de théorie de la conception pour les raisons qu’elle prend en compte la spécificité de l’architecture et qu’elle est caractérisée par une construction formelle, un potentiel de généralisation et une forte capacité modélisatrice. Elle constitue ainsi un terrain d’étude privilégié pour étudier la capacité d’une théorie à énoncer quelque chose de la « conception de la réception » architecturale. Toutefois, la méthode, construite d’une manière générique, est à même d’étudier d’autres théories de la conception.— Les parcs de la Villette de Bernard Tschumi et de Rem Koolhaas s’offrent comme une matière pertinente à l’étude, parce qu’ils proposent tout deux des usages particulièrement singuliers et répondent à un programme d’innovation sociétale.Le dispositif expérimental consiste alors à observer la théorie en la mettant en action sur ces cas de conception particuliers. La modélisation résultante permet d’évaluer la capacité de la théorie à décrire la « conception de la réception ». A. Simon) imply to withdraw from approaches like usage studies and sociological points of view, since we focus on users that do not exist yet but are represented or anticipated. The concept of “conception of the reception” elaborated in this work means this uptake of the reality of the reception by designers’ cognition. Indeed, the phenomenon we aim to elucidate is a thinking process, a mind ability.This work defines two nested researches’ bodies: one being the French theory, “architecturology” (Ph. Boudon, Ph. Deshayes, C.Lecourtois), a case of a design theory which will be epistemologically and critically analyzed; the other one, the projects of Bernard Tschumi and Rem Koolhaas at for the La Villette park comptetition in 1982 which are cases of design processes. These design cases are the field where an architecturological study is applied.— The reason why architecturology is chosen, is that it takes the specificity of architecture into account, and that it is characterized by a formal construction, a generalization potential and a strong modelling capacity. Therefor it is taken as an advantageous field to study the capacity of a theory to state something about the architectural “conception of the reception”. Whatever, the methods is built in a generic way and could study other theories.— The park of La Villette projects are relevant to study as they both suggested particularly unexpected usages and met a social innovation program.The experimental device consists then in observing the theory by putting it in action on particular study cases. Manchmal geht es bei der Kritik gerade um die Kluft zwischen der ursprünglichen Absicht und der tatsächlich erzeugten Wirkung (die"grands ensembles" waren damals vom Humanismus inspiriert). Aber eine tiefere Erkenntnis dieser Zielsetzung fehlt und erfordert daher Forschungsarbeit.Gestaltungstheorien zielen darauf ab, eine gewisse Verständlichkeit des Entwurfprozess zu vermitteln. Aber es scheint, dass sich die durch diese Theorien erklärte Entwurfstätigkeit im Wesentlichen auf das architektonische Objekt in seinen konkreten und materiellen Dimensionen konzentriert. Wenn wir uns dagegen für die "Rezeption" interessieren, stellt sichdie Frage, ob wir den Entwurf von Lebensstilen sowie zukünftige Nutzungs - und Erfahrungsausgestaltungen erkennen können.... Simon) verpflichtet uns, uns von Ansätzen wie der Soziologie der Nutzungen zu lösen, da wir uns für Rezipienten interessieren, die noch nicht existieren und nur vorgestellt oder antizipiert werden. Das in dieser Arbeit entwickelte Konzept des "Entwurfs der Rezeption" bedeutet, dass sich die Architekten kognitiv die Realität der Rezeption zu eigen machen. In der Tat ist das Phänomen, das hier beleuchtet werden soll, ein Denkprozess, eine geistige Fähigkeit.Diese Arbeit definiert daher zwei miteinander verflochtene Korpusse: Einerseits ist die ŖArchitekturologieŗ (Ph. Boudon, Ph. Deshayes, C.Lecourtois) ein Fall der Gestaltungstheorie, die man einer kritischen epistemologischen Studie unterziehen kann. Sie stellt deshalb einen besonders geeigneten Studiengegenstand dar, um zu untersuchen, inwieweit eine Theorie in der Lage ist, etwas von dem architekturalen "Entwurf der Rezeption" zu vermitteln. Allerdings ist die Methode auf eine so allgemeine Weise konstruiert, dass man auch andere Gestaltungstheorien damit untersuchen kann. - Bernard Tschumis und Rem Koolhaasř Entwürfe für den Park von La Villette sind für die Studie relevant, da sie beide besonders originelle Nutzungsmöglichkeiten bieten und einem gesellschaftlichen Innovationsauftrag Rechnung tragen.Das experimentelle Design besteht dann darin, die Theorie zu beobachten, indem es sie auf bestimmte Entwurfsbeispiele anwendet. Die daraus resultierende Modellierung ermöglicht es zu beurteilen, inwieweit die Theorie den "Entwurf der Rezeption" beschreiben kann. Das Ergebnis dieser Prüfung öffnet dann den Weg zu einer theoretischen Konsolidierungsarbeit

The purpose of the exegesis is to explain the space-time sensibility and an inner listening process that lies behind my creative process and its six scores. Its focus is a discussion of how my compositional space-time sensibility encountered three aesthetic aspects, of non-musical coastal architectural mathematics, East Asian aesthetics and Steiner spirituality, that together had a revitalizing effect that propelled my work towards a new genesis. I argue that implementing a three-pronged approach of incorporating the non-musical mathematics of architecture, East Asian spatial aesthetics and Steiner spirituality into my music creates oku inner space sonically. The structure of the exegesis commences with a compositional Credo to a cultural Journey to an Analysis. The Credo outlines my Steiner spirituality and Christian ethos through metaphor, a description of a mediation process and a spiritual fingerprint of eight dimensional concepts that pervade my work. The Journey describes the development of an Australian space and time sensibility that was developed and broadened through an interaction with the Asia-Pacific region for more than twenty years, in which I experienced resonances with key composers from Japan, Korea, the Philippines and New Zealand. The Analysis describes how I have operated from the aesthetic perspective of a ‘butterfly modernist’; through applying a space-time sensibility and an inner listening process with three interactive dimensions. In this, my inner listening intuitively guided the processing of these elements within the fuzzy realm of my creative psychological space towards a reinvigoration of my compositional practice. The Passing Show, examines the interface between contemplative practices and the destabilizing effect of the carnivalesque. A repurposed early 20th century merry-go- round is reconfigured as a conceptual vehicle for renewing our attention to removing hindrances. The site-specific installation, titled Vimoksha, is viewed through the lens of the radical imaginary, investigating notions of karmic inheritance through a heuristic approach to material processes, personal history, kinetics and sound.
