This paper uses argumentation tools such as argument diagrams and argumentation schemes to analyze four examples of argument from analogy, and argues that to proceed from there to evaluating these arguments, features of the context of dialogue need to be taken into account. The evidence drawn from these examples is taken to support a pragmatic approach to studying argument from analogy, meaning that identifying the logical form of the argument by building an argument diagram of the premises and conclusion is not by itself sufficient for argument evaluation. To get further, it is argued, the argument evaluator needs to take into account how this particular argument was used in context to support a conversational goal.

Argument invention is a method that can be used to help an arguer find arguments that could be used to prove a claim he needs to defend. The aim of this paper is to show how argumentation systems recently developed in artificial intelligence can be applied to the task of argument invention. One such system called Carneades is featured. Carneades can be used to analyze arguments, evaluate arguments, to make an argument diagram, and to construct arguments from a database. Using some simple examples, the paper explains how Carneades works as a system of argument invention.

AbstractIn this paper, we present a survey of the development of the technique of argument diagramming covering not only the fields in which it originated — informal logic, argumentation theory, evidence law and legal reasoning — but also more recent work in applying and developing it in computer science and artificial intelligence (AI). Beginning with a simple example of an everyday argument, we present an analysis of it visualized as an argument diagram constructed using a software tool. In the context of a brief history of the development of diagramming, it is then shown how argument diagrams have been used to analyse and work with argumentation in law, philosophy and AI.

SynopsisWe study the bifurcation diagram and uniqueness of solutions ofBy using a rescaling technique and the Implicit Function Theorem, we establish the global bifurcation diagram. Uniqueness is proved by a separation argument to complete the bifurcation picture of the problem. Our study suggests that the bifurcation diagrams have different behaviour at λ = 0, depending on whether g(∞) > 0 or g(∞) < 0 in L∞ norm, but quite similar behaviour in Lp or W2,1.

The most comfortable way to present capacity is M-N interaction curve diagram (bending moment and longitudinal force). Graph of M-N most commonly appears as a function, where an axial force is the argument and the bending moment is the value. This work introduce a formation of the curve way, where the the rotation angle of the strain diagram is the argument, and the full strain diagram is the value. Using the complete state of the strain of the cross section, enables easy calculation the M-N forces using stress-strain diagram for a given material. Interaction graph is based on parabola-rectangle diagram for concrete and the graph with inclined top branch with strain limit for reinforcing steel. The method has no restrictions due to the concrete class.

AbstractIn 1875, Lord Kelvin stated an energy-based argument for equilibrium and stability in conservative flows. The possibility of building an implementation of Kelvin’s argument, based on the construction of a simple bifurcation diagram, has been the subject of debate in the past. In this paper, we build on work from dynamical systems theory, and show that an essential requirement for constructing a meaningful bifurcation diagram is that families of solutions must be accessed through isovortical (i.e. vorticity-preserving), incompressible rearrangements. We show that, when this is the case, turning points in fluid impulse are linked to changes in the number of the positive-energy modes associated with the equilibria (and therefore in the number of modes likely to be linearly unstable). In addition, the shape of a velocity-impulse diagram, for a family of solutions, determines whether a positive-energy mode is lost or gained at the turning point. Further to this, we detect bifurcations to new solution families by calculating steady flows that have been made ‘imperfect’ through the introduction of asymmetries in the vorticity field. The resulting stability approach, which employs ‘imperfect velocity-impulse’ (IVI) diagrams, can be used to determine the number of positive-energy (likely unstable) modes for each equilibrium flow belonging to a family of steady states. As an illustration of our approach, we construct IVI diagrams for several two-dimensional flows, including elliptical vortices, opposite-signed vortex pairs (of both rotating and translating type), single and double vortex rows, as well as gravity waves. By also considering an example involving the Chaplygin–Lamb dipole, we illustrate how the stability of a specific flow may be determined, by embedding it within a properly constructed solution family. The stability data from our IVI diagrams agree precisely with results in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, for a few of the flows considered here, our work yields the first available stability boundaries. Further to this, for several of the flows that we examine, the IVI diagram methodology leads us to the discovery of new families of steady flows, which exhibit lower symmetry.

Abstract Mixing processes in deep precipitating cumulus clouds are investigated by tracking Lagrangian particles in a large-eddy simulation. The trajectories of particles are reconstructed and the thermodynamic properties of cloud air are studied using mixing diagrams. The trajectory analysis shows that the in-cloud mixing is entirely dominated by lateral entrainment and that there is no significant vertical mixing by downdrafts originating from cloud top. Yet the thermodynamic properties of the particles are located close to a line in the mixing diagrams, which appears to be consistent with two-point vertical mixing. An attempt is made to resolve this paradox using the buoyancy-sorting model of Taylor and Baker, but it is found that this model does not provide a full explanation for the location of particles in the mixing diagram. However, it is shown that the mixing-line behavior can be well understood from a simple analytically solvable model that uses a range of different lateral entrainment rates. Two further factors that determine the location of particles in the mixing diagram are identified: the removal of noncloudy air and precipitation effects. Finally, a thermodynamic argument is given that explains the absence of coherent downdrafts descending from cloud top.

Let K be a knot or link and let p = det (K). Using integral colorings of rational tangles, Kauffman and Lambropoulou showed that every rational K has a mod p coloring with distinct colors. If p is prime this holds for all mod p colorings. Harary and Kauffman conjectured that this should hold for prime, alternating knot diagrams without nugatory crossings for p prime. Asaeda, Przyticki and Sikora proved the conjecture for Montesinos knots. In this paper, we use an elementary combinatorial argument to prove the conjecture for prime alternating algebraic knots with prime determinant. We also give a procedure for coloring any prime alternating knot or link diagram and demonstrate the conjecture for non-algebraic examples.

Constructing and understanding arguments is often difficult but key to both philosophyand other parts of the everyday life. Some methods to ease this task has been developed. One of the methods developed within informal reasoning is argument diagramming, amethod to structure and visualize arguments. This essay takes a complicated argumentabout the fate of the universe, put forward by futurist Ray Kurzweil in his book TheSingularity is Near, as well as some critique published against said argument, as a casestudy for the application of argument diagramming on unstructured arguments fromoutside the field of philosophy. To arrive at a diagram that can be easily grasped andread but still contains all information of the original argument, this essay developsa method of splitting sub-diagrams off of a main diagram. Analysing the resultingdiagrams shows that the plausibility of Kurzweil’s argument is heavily dependent on afew, critical premises at the lower levels of the diagram.

In the explanations of Ming-Qing academic transformation, the early Qing Confucian scholars argued about the significances of Yi Diagram with four theories: "Anti-Neo-Confucianism", "Inner Logic", "Return to the Sources" and "Confucian Purism". In order to define the mainstream theory from the subordinate, this paper starts from the discussion of the arguments before the Qing Dynasty, and applies case studies to analyze the textual and ideological arguments of Yi Diagram, which were proposed by Huang Zong-xi, Huang Zong-yan, Hu Wei and Mao Qi-ling. Additionally, this paper also discusses the academic backgrounds of these four scholars, aiming to distinguish the features and major conclusions of their proposed arguments. Based on the detailed analysis, this paper suggests that these four scholars have different analytical perspectives and contributions. However, it was still debatable for many scholars that if Zhu Xi’s Classic interpretation with Yi Diagram was acceptable. Lastly, scholars used all kinds of methods, such as ephemeris, ideology, history and textual researches, to differ Yi Diagram from Yi. They had different levels of criticism, but all opposed that the metaphysics of Yi Diagram is better than Yi.

The book analyses recent philosophical discussions of Kant’s theory of the sublime, and the artistic examples these give or provoke, in order to construct a diagram of sublime contemporary art. This diagram will have the immediate aim of producing a new genealogy of post-war art that avoids the modern/postmodern rupture, in favour of a sublime art that can utilise both traditional and new media and has the production of the future as its political goal. The book will draw on both philosophical discourse and art history and theory in making its argument. The introduction will give an account of the historical emergence of the sublime, concentrating on Kant. The following five chapters will each discuss a contemporary philosopher’s reading of Kant’s sublime (Lyotard, Derrida, Deleuze and Guattari, Rancière, Jameson), and also consider their artistic examples. From this will be drawn a diagram of sublime art that incorporates the most useful aspects of each thinker, and also outlines a new genealogy of post-war art. The sixth chapter will then use this diagram, and its artistic genealogy, to offer a theory of contemporary artistic practices as an aesthetic politics (ie., a biopolitics) that overcomes the current (postmodern) impasse between art and life. The conclusion will project this new diagram into the future.

This chapter returns to the reason why people—in an ex ante situation—prefer to pay part of the healthcare costs ex post. This is simply because there is no welfare gain from insurance when the potential treatment expenditure is sufficiently low. The efficiency argument for co-insurance as a mechanism to reduce the welfare loss from insurance is illustrated using a standard model. Different patient payment systems are compared. A recurrent issue in policy debates over patient payments is their distributive implications. This inherent inequity problem is discussed, including a diagram showing the deterrent effect of out-of-pocket payments for poor people’s healthcare utilization. Finally, in a context where patient payments are justified as a way to reduce ‘excess demand’, the chapter suggests that it may be doctor initiated rather than patient initiated. Hence, it might be more appropriate to regulate the supply side than the demand side.

The final chapter of this book, Chapter 20, goes beyond the two sets of variables that are considered within an economic evaluation: costs and outcomes. The issue here is how equity and fairness can be included in the decision-making process by allowing different threshold values for quality-adjusted life years depending on the distributive implications of healthcare programmes. The fundamental question is what type of inequality that policymakers would seek to reduce. Five equity principles in health are discussed, and compared using diagrams and numerical examples. These are equality in (1) future health, (2) future health losses, (3) the proportion of future health lost, (4) lifetime health losses, and (5) lifetime health. While the debate on equity weighting generally involves arguments for accepting higher threshold values, the chapter ends with the contexts when lower threshold values would be appropriate, that is, being cost-effective does not imply that the programme should be publicly funded.

This chapter analyses the circular plan of Jerusalem in Peter of Poitiers' Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi, a synopsis of history widely disseminated and frequently adapted. The plan of Jerusalem reveals how Peter of Poitiers modified and fused different sources, including Peter Comestor's Historia scholastica, to create a visually persuasive image of perfect formal and social order, with six gates foreshadowing the twelve gates of the Heavenly Jerusalem. The visual alignment of the plan of Jerusalem and other diagrams in the Compendium prompts the beholder to reflect on analogies of structures and events, and thus on the order and meaning of history. This argument extends to the late fifteenth-century diagram of the heavenly Jerusalem in Werner Rolewinck's Fasciculus temporum, which functions at the same time as a visualization of the Creed and as an allegorical image of the church, predetermined and eternal.

This chapter examines the arguments that claim that human antisocial behavior—notably impulsivity, aggression, and related forms of criminal conduct—have neurobiological roots. While neurobiological evidence from genomics or functional brain imaging is likely to have limited traction in the criminal courtroom itself, a new diagram is nonetheless emerging in the criminal justice system as it encounters developments in the neurosciences. This does not entail a challenge to doctrines of free will or an exculpatory argument that “my brain made me do it,” as some have suggested. Rather it is developing around the themes of susceptibility, prediction, and precaution that have come to infuse many aspects of criminal justice systems as they have come to focus on questions of risk—risk assessment, risk management, and risk reduction.

This chapter discusses a method of computing probabilities called “coupling.” The idea of coupling is that, when comparing probabilities of two events A and B, one tries to put them into the same experiment. All one would need to do is compare Pr(A but not B) with Pr(B but not A). This might be quite easy, especially if most of the time either both A and B occur or neither. The chapter illustrates this method through a Venn diagram showcasing the desired situation. In addition, this chapter applies this method through a series of problems: an argument involving chess games, the probability of a baseball team winning games, and finally, an application to squash strategy.

This chapter's subject matter is “The Land of Hope”, a Japanese film inspired by facts. The primary aim is to apply structural analysis of narrative, a method commonly used for natural language text, to film, which is an audiovisual text. This research will adopt methods for decomposing the film into component units and rules for linking them that are appropriate to the physical/representational characteristics of the medium, and propose a procedure for visualizing the narrative structure using a single diagram. The second aim is to sketch the aspects of narrative content that structural analyses – which only regard its formal aspects – overlook, supporting the argument with knowledge from film cognition research and by focusing on particular themes. This chapter's research deals with a practical simulation that analyzes a film's form and content with an integrated approach, and advocates the methodology that is applicable to any film in principle.

Volume flow rate, specific isentropic enthalpy difference, rotor outer diameter and rotational speed of a fan can be transformed to speed number and diameter number. These two non-dimensional numbers are related together in the so-called Cordier-diagram. For axial, radial and mixed flow fans, there is a single empirical relationship between both quantities and it is well accepted that this line represents “optimum” fan designs with high efficiency. Based on velocity triangles, a relationship between flow coefficient and pressure coefficient exists. This so-called performance curve captures off-design operating points as well as the design point of a fan. Therefore, the performance curve can be transformed to the Cordier-diagram to predict the relationship between speed number and diameter number. It is shown that the Cordier-line depends mainly on velocity triangles and the common argument of high efficiency, claimed in the majority of the literature, plays only a secondary role. Nevertheless, the requirement of high efficiency influences the fan design for a certain design point. This paper focuses mainly on axial flow fans. It gives a theoretical interpretation of the influence of blade loading criteria and design limits on the Cordier-line: (1) De Haller number, (2) cascade loading parameter, (3) Lieblein diffusion factor, (4) Strscheletzky swirl number. Criterion (1) reflects the minimum velocity ratio to avoid endwall separation in a linear compressor cascade. Criterion (2) is a combination of lift coefficient and cascade solidity. It reflects the aerodynamic loading of the suction side blade boundary layer. Criteria (1) and (2) are included in criterion (3). Finally, criterion (4) indicates the risk of hub separation due to strong swirl flow. The investigation shows that the transformation of these criteria to the Cordier-diagram gives very similar results. Furthermore, it is shown that the axial fan design limits in the Cordier-diagram are represented by certain hub-to-tip radius ratios.

The common tutorial method of teaching entropy is far twisted and complicated. The convention is to first present Carnot corollaries followed by a “rational argument” to justify the corollaries. In the next step, the efficiency of Carnot engine is argued to be solely dependent on the thermal reservoirs temperatures. Then, thermodynamic temperature scale is introduced to show QL/QH equals TL/TH followed by the Clausius inequality, and finally introducing entropy S. It is not surprising why entropy has been one of the most difficult concepts to teach or learn. The way it is taught in textbooks is not straight unlike many other properties and concepts that are comparably much less cumbersome to understand. Interesting to note is that the inventor of entropy; Clausius, derived the famous Carnot efficiency by simply using the p-V diagram of a Carnot cycle operating with an ideal gas. The objective of this article is to shed light to the original method of Clausius and to present a simple and easy-to-digest approach, so students can better understand where entropy is originated from. Furthermore, we will show that the proof of Carnot corollaries is not concrete and certain objections can be raised.

In business communication and negotiations communicating sides are trying to convince each other in their views, positions justice. For this purpose using a variety of measures starting with scientifically sound principles, logic diagrams and ending in various appeals, speculations, sophistries. Language persuasiveness is very important the negotiators’ competence. Nothing can replace the suggestibility of a live word. Only directly communicating, negotiating, submitting proof, arguments, counter-arguments, controverting negotiators can move quickly to the overall objective of the agreement. Persuasion aims to change the behavior of the opponent, interviewer. Persuasion can bring positive and negative results.

This work demonstrates a new mechanism for changing the architecture of microfluidic channels during device operation. This method uses an aqueous solution of a thermally responsive polymer (Pluronic), which undergoes reversible gel formation at elevated temperatures. This gelation temperature is lowered through the presence of sodium phosphate. A phase diagram for this material system is derived from rheometry experiments. Formation of a temporary gel wall in a microfluidic device occurs at the diffusive interface between a Pluronic solution and a sodium phosphate solution. The wall thickness increases along the channel, and it decreases at high flow rates. The wall thickness also increases with saline concentration. These observations are explained through scaling arguments for the diffusion problem and with the established phase diagram.

In this paper aspects of technology and entrepreneurship interaction are considered. Firstly some dy-namic aspects of technology are presented from a brief literature perspective. This is then contrasted to and integrated with some elements of entrepreneurship where cyclic aspects are influenced by un-employment in the business and possibly technology environment. This work is built on some views presented by previous authors such as Faria and others. Their work is extended to a conceptual sys-tems thinking model representing cyclic factors in entrepreneurship using a causal loop diagram (CLD) approach. Some business statistics from databases are gathered and analysed for entrepre-neurship to show and support some arguments of Faria and others about cyclic nature of entrepre-neurship. A conceptual system dynamics approach for the entrepreneurship dynamics is presented based on previous research.

Abstract Multistage process centrifugal compressor applications with single shaft rotors supported by only two bearings are quite common. It is sometimes desirable to operate impellers at higher rotational speeds, resulting in relatively compact and cost-effective machines. Such high-speed rotors can, however, pose rotordynamic challenges, and therefore require larger shaft or impeller bore diameters to increase rotor stiffness and rotordynamic stability. This work explores aerodynamically favorable ways to adapt an existing standard bore impeller design to large bore requirements. First, the stage aerodynamic performance and flow range implications of increasing bore diameter are discussed using meanline modeling and vector diagram arguments. Some strategies for adapting a standard bore design to large bore variant are then presented. Attempts are made to identify and clarify technical limitations to the degree of adaptability of an existing impeller to large bore requirements. Finally, a CFD-backed case study on a large-bore adaptation of a particular stage is presented to clarify practical considerations.

Any assessment of long-term repository safety will require development of a set of analyses and arguments to demonstrate the persistence of the key safety functions of the geological environment up to several hundred thousand years into the future. However, likely future global climatic and sea-level fluctuations and uplift/subsidence would result in a dramatic change in the location of the current coastline with a subsequent significant change to hydraulic and hydrochemical conditions at coastal sites. It is thus of great importance in the Japanese disposal programme to establish comprehensive techniques for coastal site characterisation. To this end, a systematic framework, which is known as a ‘Geosynthesis Data Flow Diagram’, has been formulated, which outlines a basic roadmap of the geosynthesis methodology for characterising temporal and spatial changes of various properties and processes at coastal sites, with particular focus on the palaeohydrogeology. A basic strategy for stepwise surface-based investigations has also been proposed, which incorporates the geosynthesis methodology in an effective manner. This technique has been introduced in an ongoing collaborative programme for characterising the coastal geological environment around Horonobe in northern Hokkaido, Japan, and now tested and optimised based on accumulated technical knowledge and experience during the progress of the investigations.

Abstract In recent years, CAD/CAM integration for machining has been based on the concept of manufacturing features. In this paper we present an overview of an alternative scheme to integrate CAD with CAM. Instead of decomposing the design into manufacturing features, we generate tool paths directly from the shape of the workpiece using visibility and accessibility arguments. This approach builds on the work of a number of previous efforts to bring concepts from robotic path planning into the realm of NC planning. We present a hardware approach for computing visibility rapidly. This information is then used to determine the “principal directions”, or setups, around which the search will be conducted to remove material from the workpiece. The machining is conducted in two stages. The first stage, global roughing, is performed for each principal direction. The bulk of the material is removed through 5-axis roughing tool paths. Algorithms have been developed to generate these tool paths in an efficient way. The removal volume is first stratified into “4−1/2D machining pockets”, for which tool paths are generated with simple “space filling 2D curves based on the Voronoi Diagram. After global roughing, the surface of the part can be finished with “face based finishing.” In this step, each face is independently machined to the required finish and accuracy using a face-oriented, rather than feature-oriented, approach. The primary concern is to meet accessibility constraints for each face while generating tool paths individually. Once toolpaths have been generated, we simulate them and correct residual intersection problems before outputting final NC code. Since this is an overview paper that attempts to summarize current and future research in an ongoing project, we concentrate on some key issues such as accessibility, while only summarizing other individual ideas briefly. We also present some experimental results through illustrations.
