The transmission of the optical components of the Bernina branch of the Aramis beamline at SwissFEL has been measured with an X-ray gas monitor from DESY and compared with a PSI gas detector upstream of the optical components. The transmission efficiencies of the Mo, Si and SiC mirror coatings of the Aramis beamline and the various other in-beam components were evaluated and compared with theoretical calculations, showing an agreement of 6% or better in all cases. The experiment has also shown the efficacy of the high-harmonic rejection mirrors at the Bernina branch of the Aramis beamline at SwissFEL, and characterized the transmission efficiency of the on-line spectrometer in the Aramis beamline. The theoretical transmission of the mirror coatings match the experimental data to within 7%. The accuracy of these measurements was checked against a radiative bolometer from a Japanese collaboration and found to agree to a level of 4% or better. Further comparisons with a diamond detector from a US-based inter-institute collaboration demonstrated a good agreement for the attenuator settings of the beamline.

Abstract. In the course of glacier retreat, new glacier lakes can develop. As such lakes can be a source of natural hazards, strategies for predicting future glacier lake formation are important for an early planning of safety measures. In this article, a multi-level strategy for the identification of overdeepened parts of the glacier beds and, hence, sites with potential future lake formation, is presented. At the first two of the four levels of this strategy, glacier bed overdeepenings are estimated qualitatively and over large regions based on a digital elevation model (DEM) and digital glacier outlines. On level 3, more detailed and laborious models are applied for modeling the glacier bed topography over smaller regions; and on level 4, special situations must be investigated in-situ with detailed measurements such as geophysical soundings. The approaches of the strategy are validated using historical data from Trift Glacier, where a lake formed over the past decade. Scenarios of future glacier lakes are shown for the two test regions Aletsch and Bernina in the Swiss Alps. In the Bernina region, potential future lake outbursts are modeled, using a GIS-based hydrological flow routing model. As shown by a corresponding test, the ASTER GDEM and the SRTM DEM are both suitable to be used within the proposed strategy. Application of this strategy in other mountain regions of the world is therefore possible as well.

The locations of 750 calendar images of Switzerland spanning the years from 1951 to 2000 have been assessed. By far the greatest number of landscape images are from the Alps, more specifically from tourist regions, such as the Jungfrau and Aletsch region, Zermatt, Matterhorn, the Oberengadin, Bernina, the Santis and Churfirsten. It would be fairly safe to say that the landscapes that appear on calendars act as « ambassadors »for promoting Switzerland as an attractive country. Any areas of degraded or ruined landscape only serves to reduce this potential.

The Bernina instrument at the SwissFEL Aramis hard X-ray free-electron laser is designed for studying ultrafast phenomena in condensed matter and material science. Ultrashort pulses from an optical laser system covering a large wavelength range can be used to generate specific non-equilibrium states, whose subsequent temporal evolution can be probed by selective X-ray scattering techniques in the range 2–12 keV. For that purpose, the X-ray beamline is equipped with optical elements which tailor the X-ray beam size and energy, as well as with pulse-to-pulse diagnostics that monitor the X-ray pulse intensity, position, as well as its spectral and temporal properties. The experiments can be performed using multiple interchangeable endstations differing in specialization, diffractometer and X-ray analyser configuration and load capacity for specialized sample environment. After testing the instrument in a series of pilot experiments in 2018, regular user operation begins in 2019.

According to statistic evaluation of the manifestation of signs of the economic suitability of state sort resources of 2019 registration potatoes when growing it in different agro-climatic conditions, a significant advantage of influence of the forest-steppe conditions was determined. Compared to Polesia the increase of yield rose for 4.1 t/ha or 18 % (НІР05 = 2.18, Ffact= 12.65 > F05 = 4.22) and the amount of trade potato for 22.72 ha or 20 % (Ffact = 58.87). There is also a tendency to increase the number of starch from unit of area for – 17 % and the total consumer properties for – 8 %. However, there is a significant difference in the reduction of storability of products by 45 % and the lack of it’s resistance to macrosporiosis and late blight. It was proved that the yield of varieties for cultivation in the polesia zone by 25.7 % depended on the duration of the growing season (Ffact = 4.14 > F05 = 0.06). The relationship between yield and starch of potatoes in Polesia zone varieties was determined – 23.6 % and in forest-steppe – 17.3 % and starch collection, respectively, 33.6 % and 28.0 %. The dependence of storability of potato which grew in the polesia zone and in forest-steppe from the amount of starch for 15 % was mathematically proved (Ffact = 2.11 > F05 = 0.17) і 11.3 % (Ffact = 1.52 > F05 = 0.24); the dependence of storability on the duration of the growing season in the Forest-Steppe conditions was confirmed(Ffact = 0.66 > F05 = 0.43). In addition, the 12 % of tasting grade of the Forest-Steppe varieties depended on the starch content amount (Ffact = 1.65 > F05 = 0.22). According to the results of the regression analysis, mathematical models have been developed to predict yields, culinary and consumer properties, and the storability of new potato varieties under different growing conditions. The project of a conveyor for the consumption of fresh product in summer period with the involvement of varieties of early ripeness in the Forest-Steppe was presented: 80 days after planting – Sanibel, 90 days after planting – Medison, Paroli, 95 days after planting – Bazalia, Bernina, 100 days after planting – Donata, in the Polesia zone ‒ 80 days after planting – Sanibel, 90 days after planting – Paroli, 95 days after planting –Bazalia, 100 days after planting – Medison, Bernina, Donata. By distribution of varieties by predicted high content of phytonutrients there were bred varieties with red skin and creamy flesh – Bazalia and Sanibel, by high content with yellow flesh – Baltic Rosa and moderate content with white flesh – Oleksandrit, Fotynia, Ricarda. Introduction of new varieties with certain high adaptive potential of storability and content of bioactive compounds in potatoes will provide growth of potato production in the conditions of the northeast forest-steppe and increase its competitiveness in the domestic and foreign markets and will solve the problem of year-round consumption of fresh quality products.

Abstract. An inventory of data for the extent of ice in 1850 is presented and compared to the extent of alpine glaciers in 1973 as recorded by the Swiss glacier inventory. Special attention is given to the position and spatial Variation of snowline altitudes based on data for the general ice retreat between 1850 and 1973. The ränge of snowline altitudes (as given by the 2 :1 -equilibrium line calculation) reflects the topography and the related change from wet perialpine to dry continental inneralpine areas. In addition, the effects of local condition are superimposed on this trend. The overall climatically induced rise in snowline altitudes between 1850 and 1973 is 77 +/-51 m. The considerable ränge of 340 m as compared to the actual Situation in 1973 demonstrates the influence of local topography, geometry and dip of the glacier surface on the snowline altitude. The mean altitude of the firnline in 1973 quantifies the melting during the last year of Observation 1972/73. The glaciers in the regions of Bernina, Bergell and Kesch are more strongly affected than in other areas during this budget period. On the average, the firnline altitude rose 120 m above de 2 :1 - equilibrium line corresponding to the surface geometry of that year. The data presented and the climatological information will be analysed and deciphered in more details.

Abstract. Using detailed field evidence provided by trimlines on former nunataks, erratic boulders and the orientations of glacial striae, the surface geometry in the accumulation area during the Last Glacial Maximum was reconstructed for the area of SE Switzerland and adjacent Italy. Collectively, the trends of trimline elevations, flowlines deduced from glacial striae and bedrock morphology along the longitudinal valleys and their tributaries indicate that the former accumulation area consisted of an ice dome with the ice divide located over the area enclosed by Schlarignia, Cinuos-chel, Livigno and Piz Bernina. It attained a minimum altitude of approximately 3000 m. Modelling the topography of the ice surface using a Geographical Information System (GIS) is consistent with these results. The paleoclimatological signal included in this surface geometry was used to draw conclusions about the main atmospheric paleocireulation patterns and to outline the principal precipitation areas for the Alps during the last glaciation. It followed from this that ice build-up was principally related to dominating precipitation by southerly circulation (foehn). The prevaleance of foehn circulation most likely reflects a southward shift of the North Atlantic polar atmospheric front and of the accompanied storm track due to the advancing margin of sea ice. There exists good agreement between these assumptions and (a) results of global circulation models for the time of the LGM; (b) estimations of basal shear stress values and flow velocities for Ice Age glaciers; and (c) interpretations of paleowind indicators.

In the Lithuanian language, persons are named by simple words and formations. The latter are divided into the categories of derivation according to their derivational meaning. The categories of derivation involve synonymous formations, i.e., derivative synonyms, and some formations are coherent in variance relation (they are derivative variants). The article aims to analyse the categories of derivation of synonymous conjugate personal names. The methods of derivational and semantic analysis, as well as calculation, were applied in the present research. The article discusses 1179 nominal personal names (out of these formations 338 rows of derivative synonyms and derivative variants were formed) collected from LKŽe, LKŽ, Volumes 1 and 2. After analysis of the empirical material, the following conclusions have been drawn: the formations of conjugate personal names were grouped into five categories of noun derivation: names of possessors of nominal characteristics (baldininkas, -ė – baldžius), names of persons according to profession (akmenininkas, -ė 1 / akmeninykas, -ė / akmeninkas, -ė / akmenykas, -ė – akmenkalis, -ė / akmenkalys, -ė – akmentašys, -ė), names according to origin (names of persons according to their place of origin and place of residence (adutiškėnas – adutiškietis, -ė); names of children according to their parents (antrasūnis – pasūnis – posūnis)), names according to gender differences (bernėnė – bernienė 1), names of collective nouns (bernynė – bernava – bernija). Only derivatives with suffixes and endings belong to the categories of noun derivation, but often persons are named by using derivatives with prefixes and compounds. Therefore, not only derivatives with suffixes and endings but also derivatives with prefixes and/or compounds belong to some rows of derivational synonyms (derivational variants). A big part of synonymous conjugate formations is composed of compounds (atlapaširdis, -ė – atviraširdis, -ė). These derivational synonyms (derivational variants) are not included in other traditional categories of derivation.
