ABSTRACT INTRODUCTIONUntil 2050, Australia and New Zealand will experience continuing increase in the population aged >65 years. Studying differences in indicators of old-age structure between these countries can inform policymakers. AIMTo calculate and analyse indicators of old-age structure for Australia and New Zealand. METHODSFive indicators of old-age structure were calculated: centenarian ratio (number of centenarians per 100,000 people), longevity index (proportion of people aged ≥90 and ≥65 years in the population), longevity level (proportion of 80+/60+ years population), agein

Spain’s population of people aged 100 years and over has increased tenfold since the last quarter of the 20th century, exceeding 16,000 individuals by 2019. Despite this cohort’s growth, which has made centenarians a significant segment of Spain’s population in their own right, centenarians have remained little studied from the perspective of social sciences. A key challenge for research concerning centenarians is understanding their personal experiences of reaching this landmark age; such information could help to identify the sociodemographic and psychosocial factors that enable people to li

AbstractThe aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the experiences of extended longevity as perceived by centenarians. Centenarians (people over 100 years of age) are the fastest growing group of the ageing population in developed countries. Ten centenarians aged between 100 and 106 years, living in the Lower North Island of New Zealand, participated in the study. The biographical narrative interpretive method of inquiry guided data collection through face-to-face interviews, and thematic analysis was subsequently undertaken. The most important findings can be summarized as follows. (ii) Continuous exposure to antigens causes a lifelong, chronic antigenic stress, which is responsible, together with the involution of the thymus, for the accumulation of memory/effector T cells and the exhaustion

The relevance of creating a barrier-free environment for the elderly is dictated by the current demographic trend towards an increase in life expectancy, an increase in its quality. The number of centenarians with functional impairments (senile dementia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s) who require care at a qualitatively new level is increasing. Innovative form of organizing the leisure of the elderly «Kindergarten for the elderly people» is considered as one of the ways to solve the problem. Based on the data of a

Abstract Background In 2017 the Central Statistics Office reported that there were 465 people over the age of 100 in Ireland. This number is likely to increase and, as hip fracture increases exponentially with age, we can expect to see more centenarians experiencing hip fracture. In the UK we have comparative data on such a cohort. We sought to define and describe those aged 100 years and over included in the Irish Hip Fracture Database from 2013-2017. Methods A secondary analysis of the 15,603 data entries in the IHFD between 2013 and 2017 was conducted. Those patients aged 100 years and over

Americans are living longer than ever before. A child born today can expect to live 80 years, 90 years, or longer. Many of today’s children will live to be centenarians. Aging education to prepare people for the long life ahead has been endorsed since the first White House Conference on Aging in 1961. However, little is happening with aging education in our homes, schools, and communities. This article discusses the school nurse’s role in helping to prepare children for the long life ahead of them and presents aging education resources and activities. To evaluate the effect of age and other risk factors for atherosclerosis on arterial blood velocity, carotid arteries in 179 healthy individuals ranging from 21 to 102 years old were examined using color Doppler ultrasonography. Velocity in common and internal carotid arteries decreased consecutively from young adults to very elderly people except for peak internal carotid artery velocity. Peak common carotid artery velocity in the elderly (≥ 65 years old) people was inversely associated with age and diastolic blood pressure and directly associated with pulse pressure. The need to train more health workers, and particularly mental health workers, in the care of older adults, has been highlighted by a variety of disciplines including psychiatry (Jeste et al., 1999), psychology (Knight et al., 1995), social work (Rosen et al., 2002) and nursing (Hirst et al., 1996). This rise in attention paid to geriatric health care is partly driven by demographics. Over the next 50 years, the global population of people aged 60 years and over is expected to triple to 2 billion by 2050 (U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, 2007). This qualitative study provides a comprehensive account of the social and life experiences and strategies and personality attributes that characterize exceptional longevity (living to 100 or over). It is based on nine semi-structured interviews of relatively healthy and functional Greek centenarians of both sexes. The analytic approach was thematic and based on grounded theory. We found that our participants were characterized by selectiveness in their socializing with other people and tendency to avoid conflicts. Also, we found that they predominantly used the “flight” response whenever confr

This study contributes to our understanding of the ageing process by investigating whether particular psychological dispositions among older people are associated with healthy ageing. The study's objective is to further our knowledge about what constitutes ‘health’ for the ‘oldest-old’ (people aged 80 or more years) in China. It is recognised that apart from the absence of disease, good health is a subjective experience, and it is posited that self-reported health is associated with psychological disposition, or in other words, that an individual's personal attitudes, motivations, and beliefs

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria has become a major global health problem. One of the main reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes is the human gut microbiota. To characterise these genes, a metagenomic approach was used. In this study, a comprehensive antibiotic resistome catalog was established using fecal samples from 246 healthy individuals from world’s longevity township in Jiaoling, China. In total, 606 antibiotic resistance genes were detected. Our results indicated that antibiotic resistance genes in the human gut microbiota accumulate and become more complex with age as older group
