The evacuation chair allows safe and efficient evacuation of people with disabilities or injuriesfrom buildings during emergencies. Therefore, evacuation chairs need to be effective in variousconditions of use. It is crucial to know how to choose the right evacuation chair and how tointegrate it effectively into a specific evacuation system. The article aims to identify expectations forevacuation chairs and to evaluate the level of familiarity with how they work of people organizingan evacuation system. This goal was pursued by surveying 41 people who plan and implementevacuation systems in buildings. The analysis of the research results shows a deficit in practicalknowledge concerning the operation of evacuation chairs; consequently, it justifies and suggeststhe need for further action in this area. The respondents chose the answer that seemed to be assafe as possible without having to go into details. They were unable to effectively define the rightexpectations for evacuation chairs. The training of chair use should include brake functioning,the role of the belt securing the head and a leg belt. Users have partially conflicting demands forthe chair, which shows a lack of established criteria, probably due to the lack of practical experiencein the use of emergency chairs. The decision-making model and the factors that affect purchaseshould be examined to determine their needs more precisely. The specific needs of all three groupsof users should be established, and potential antinomies between features should be recognizedand overcome. The study also suggests that future research should focus on the decision-makingprocess, ergonomic quality and measuring the impact of training on the actual effectiveness ofthe evacuation system. In addition, the study also highlights the need for in-depth research andconsideration of user needs in the design process.

This article describes some key concepts in gestalt psychotherapy from the perspectives of both a clinical psychologist working in the NHS and training in gestalt and a gestalt psychotherapy trainee.[There] is no gestalt therapy cookbook. Cookbooks are for craft, and therapy is an art. And I think that doing therapy is an art that requires all of the therapist’s creativity and love – Yontef (1993).

Bent chairs as poster inspiration. In 2020, an exhibition of posters based on seating equipment was presented at the National Museum in Poznań. The exhibition referred to the chair and the metamorphosis it underwent, that apart from the function of utility furniture, it became a part of art, Equipment basically used for sitting - to which we are used to everyday practice of its use, it is an indispensable element of the interior design of apartments, offices, waiting rooms, schools, stadiums, health clinics, shopping malls, cinemas, theatres and other public places. The posters on display showed chairs with a structure based on bent beech elements. Some of them accurately represented the types of bent chairs currently in production. A number of other chairs had bent elements in their design, e.g. backrests, legs or armrests, allowing for economical serial production of elements. The exhibition included works advertising films, theatre and opera performances, exhibition and party posters. They are mostly works by Polish designers.

The ornamentation of single chairs is a crucial aspect in furniture design, contributing to the aesthetic value and beauty. This qualitative descriptive study utilized fieldwork data collection methods to delve into the chair ornamentation in Jepara, a coastal area in Central Java renowned for its carved furniture industry. This industry reaches all societal layers, from the low to the high income groups. The study identified a design revolution that shifted the focus of chair decoration from mere ornaments to form and function. Specifically, the ornamentation in the design of single wooden chairs in Jepara includes two main motifs: flora and fauna, as well as geometric. The study also explores how innovation in the ornamentation of Jepara's single chairs contributes to the competitiveness in local and international markets, highlighting the importance of design in the furniture industry. Furthermore, this research reveals the impact of the interaction between Jepara's carving art traditions and modern design trends, creating a unique synergy that enriches both cultural heritage and contemporary aesthetics. This analysis uncovers how each chair style with its respective ornamentation reflects the distinctive cultural and social background of the region.

Joseph Kosuth’s “One and Three Chairs” is considered the materialization of his 1969 essay “Art after Philosophy”, where he defined Conceptual Art, in which Meaning relied solely in its authors mind, expressed through a tireless repetition. Although this kind of reiteration could become means for an understanding, the fact that no effort was made (so to speak) in explaining one’s personal views, deprived the observer of the needed resources for its interpretation. Here lies a dilemma where Conceptual Art can be criticised, since, if an artist can hide behind the observer’s lack of understanding, he can, in fact, propose something that, also for him, is devoid of meaning. This is why Kosuth’s work may consist not in the materialization of Conceptual Art itself, but in the defence that at the foundation of an artist's work there must be strong ethical values, manifested precisely through a correlation between Sign, Signifier and Signified, in which “One and Three Chairs”, and his subsequent work, repeatedly dwells, defending the expression of an honesty that should guide Conceptual Art, in its own defence, but also of its authors’ and appreciators’ defence.

As we begin this new volume year, I am excited to begin my tenure as the chair of the MTMS Editorial Panel. In May 2011, I had the privilege of attending the NCTM Annual Leadership Summit and was amazed by the tremendous work of the members of the Board of Directors, the chairs of other committees, and the staff at NCTM–all on behalf of teachers. A true spirit of teamwork and a contagious enthusiasm for the art of teaching mathematics were much in evidence when the group met.

Abstract In this article, I argue that our ontology of art has undergone a major change in the course of modern history. While we currently think of artworks as parts arranged in a certain way, there was a time when artworks were thought of as metaphysically more akin to ordinary artefacts such as tables and chairs; that is, as wholes having replaceable parts. This change in our ontology of art is reflected in our approach to art restoration. But what explains the change? I will suggest that the change took place because of a change in our conception of the function of art. More specifically, I will suggest that we have started to think of artworks as parts arranged in a certain way, because we have started to think of artworks as having, primarily, an aesthetic function.

Il est patent que les objets de design, en particulier les objets d’ameublement que sont les chaises, exercent un rôle social dans l’espace privé et public, mais ils peuvent aussi fonctionner symboliquement et produire une expérience esthétique. Cette thèse mène une réfl exion critique sur le rôle du design à partir de bases pragmatiques. Ainsi que le suggère Nelson Goodman dans Manières de faire de mondes, les œuvres d’art sont loin d’être les seules choses qui symbolisent. Notre travail consiste à montrer que les chaises, en tant qu’objets de design peuvent aussi fonctionner communicationnellement. Ayant constitué un corpus de 11 types de chaises selon deux critères caractéristiques du mode d’évaluation et de qualifi cation des œuvres de design ‒ l’innovation et la diff usion ‒, nous analysons les chaises comme des natures mortes, en tant qu’objets isolés. Et c’est pour mieux montrer ensuite la relation intime existant entre le corps d’un usager et la chaise qui devient alors un objet vivant, riche de cette relation
It is clear that objects of design, especially design furniture in the case of chairs, not only fulfi ll a social function in both the private and public spheres, but they can also take on a symbolic role and produce an aesthetic experience. Based in pragmatic thinking, the present thesis aims to develop a critical line of questioning for studying the role played by design. As Nelson Goodman claims in his Ways of Worldmaking, works of art are not the only things that can symbolise. Our goal consists in showing that, insofar as they are objects of design, chairs also function communicatively. Drawing from a corpus of eleven diff erent types of chairs, put together according to two characteristic criteria related to the evaluation and description of works of design – i.e. innovation and distribution – we fi rst analyse chairs in terms of still life, that is to say, as isolated objects. This preliminary analysis allows us to underscore, in a subsequent move, the intimate relationship that prevails between the user’s body and a chair, which now becomes a living object, one that is enriched by this very relationship

Work chair is considered as an important element for the users to improve comfort in work environment. An ergonomic chair design and engineering is therefore considered very important for its usability and comfort view of point for the users. The aim of the thesis is to improve the mobility and ergonomics of the existing chair in all aspects. Ergonomically designed chairs are important for long time seated workers to increase their productivity and also to reduce low back injuries which arise due to the poor design chairs in ergonomic aspects. In addition, ergonomically designed chairs help to increase the seating comfortability of the chair users. QFD and waterfall model was followed for the work execution. In this paper, we discuss a design of an ergonomically efficient chair with simple adjustments which gives more comfortability. This will give us a better likelihood to stay in a neutral position. The Ergonomics of the chair is improved in various steps. This thesis focuses on many ideas in which some of them are implemented and evaluated.

I Remember…, a series of drawings, is based on personal social experiences starting from the age of thirteen. This series begins with a memory of the first time I had to speak to a room full of people and the unexpected events of that followed. My own relationship with one of the primary subjects, the chair refers to memories of being raised in a home where certain furnishings were “off-limits.” Even more important is the presence of a cryptic narrative, fractured and dreamlike, similar to the style of writing created by Alain Robbe-Grillet. It has been a lifetime goal to create drawings that are interactive with the viewer. The baroque embellished chairs and piano provide a point of departure encouraging contemplative involvement by the viewer conceptually through imagery and physically through scale. Also, showing multiple viewpoints of the object simultaneously creates an atmosphere that is dreamlike and ghostly.

A study was conducted to gather information from department chairs serving in the 26 two-year colleges that are members of the North Texas Community College Consortium using the International Community College Chair Survey (ICCCS). The ICCCS is designed to gather insights into four aspects of the chairs' professional lives: personal characteristics, responsibilities challenges, and strategies. The study compared the demographic data and the respondents' perceptions of the challenges their units will face in the next 5 years to the original survey conducted in 1992. The regional sample included 616 first-line administrators, and a 30.5% response rate was achieved. The demographic distribution of the regional respondents shows significant shifts in gender, age, education, experience and release time but constancy in race and stability of the population. Similarities between the two samples exist regarding the challenges of maintaining program quality, providing technology, and managing financial issues. The regional sample expresses greater concern about the challenges of distance education, external accountability, and student matters.

Socrate dirait que le Dieu a créé la forme de la chaise, que les artisans fabriquent d’autres chaises d’après cette forme, et que les artistes créent des chaises artistiques d’après des chaises fabriquées par les artisans. Il y a une vérité dans ces idées. La chaise est la chaise, elle a une forme propre à elle. Elle ne prend pas la forme d’un piano, ni celle d’un lit. Ces idées conduisent à la définition, la forme, la fabrication, l’utilisation, la transformation et la signification de la chaise. On attribue, dès l’ancienne Égypte, deux fonctions à la chaise : une matérielle (s’asseoir) et une immatérielle (symboliser). Quand la chaise est utilisée dans l’activité sociale, politique ou artistique (transformée, détruite, reconstruite, etc.), elle est symbolique (elle symbolise), et c’est la seule condition dans laquelle la chaise peut dénoter et signifier. Entrons en contact avec la chaise pour qu’elle puisse signifier ! Un changement apparut à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle. Les designers ont conçu et fabriqué une grande diversité de chaises novatrices à la fois utilitaires et artistiques ou classiques dans leurs œuvres d’art. Bien que les designers aient cherché de nouvelles formes, leurs chaises étaient encore pourvues de la forme de base (pieds, siège et dossier) donnant la fonction fondamentale : s’asseoir. Il apparaît que la forme de la chaise soit déjà définie. Par qui la forme de la chaise fut-elle définie ? Par quoi la chaise signifie-t-elle ?
Socrates would say that the God created the form of the chair, that the craftsmen make other chairs according to this form, and that the artists create artistic chairs according to chairs made by the craftsmen. There is a truth in these ideas. The chair is the chair, it has its own form. It does not take the form of a piano, nor that of a bed. These ideas lead to the definition, the form, the manufacture, the use, the transformation and the significance of the chair. The human beings, from ancient Egypt, attributed two functions to the chair: one is material (sit) and the other is immaterial (symbolize). If the chair is used in a social, political or artistic activity (transformed, destroyed, rebuilt, etc.), it is symbolic (or symbolizing), this is the only condition where the chair can denote and signify. Get into contact with the chair so that it can mean! A change appeared from the end of the 19th century, designers designed and built a wide variety of innovative chairs, both utilitarian and artistic when the artists used simple and ordinary chairs or classical chairs in their art works. Although designers have sought new forms, but their chairs were still provided with the basic form (legs, seat and backrest) providing the fundamental function : sit. It appears that the form of the chair has already been defined. Who defined the form of the chair ? What does the chair mean?

This project is a composition of the intersectionality between process, structure, and materiality, and an obsession, fixation, and fetishization of the simplistic yet repetitive ‘chain’ form. The thematic infatuation with the chain form became evident throughout my work in Spring 2014, while working with bronze, wood, and brass at the Slade School of Fine art in London, England. This fall I expanded on this concept to create my own representations of the chain form, abstracting and deterring it from any sociocultural origins, contexts, or landscapes.

AbstractThe disorder-specific psychodrama therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorders begins by developing the patient’s self at the symptom level. The patient symbolizes his current obsessive thoughts (his sadistic superego), as a ‘tormenting spirit’ to which he is exposed, with a chair and a hand puppet on the object level. The compulsive actions are symbolized with another chair as self-protection against the threat of the ‘tormenting spirit’. As a doppelganger, the therapist empowers the patient to develop a relationship with his ‘tormenting spirit’ in a progressive way on the level of play, similar to child therapy, and thus to gain ego control over his masochistic self-censorship. At some point, the patient discovers on his own the inner conflicts that cause his obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The basis of the therapy is the resolution of the patient’s metacognitive confusion through separate external symbolization of the three involved metacognitive processes (ego-states) with chairs. These are his masochistic, self-injurious thinking, his self-protection through adaptation, and his healthy adult thinking. The presented action methods can qualitatively enrich the depth psychological, behavioral, and systemic therapy psychotherapy of obsessive-compulsive disorders.

This paper analyzes quantitative findings on the innovative behavior of firms in the production chains of pisco and shoe manufacture in Peru, which are served by the network of Technological Innovation Centers (CITEs), the most important technology policy instrument available in Peru. These two chains, in low and medium-technology industries, are representative of Peru's manufacturing sector. Of particular interest is the role of technical standards as a means of technological diffusion, which is stressed in the work of the CITEs. For the pisco chain, that role involves the definition of the product itself, for which Peru is seeking a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) denomination. In the shoe chain, the technical standard should act as a coordination mechanism that will help increase efficiency throughout the chain, which at present is often fractured.

Women and gender-diverse people represent an important constituency in the food value chain. Among all working women globally, about one in three works upstream in the food value chain. These women face increasing barriers to safety, recognition and advancement. Yet very little about their experiences has been documented. In the limited instances where the women who power global supply chains have been put into focus, most have concentrated on the experiences of women workers in the apparel sector. Through desktop research, one-on-one interviews with local organizations, case studies and workshops, this paper provides information and guidance on how investors, who are well-positioned to encourage companies to advance gender equity upstream in company supply chains, can help reshape this narrative and encourage companies to act.

A widespread view in the private sector is that the lack of access to finance significantly limits the entry into and the performance of value chains. Access to finance is expensive, scarce, and short term in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and it hampers firms' investment and the financial management required to gain entry and remain as participants in a value chain. The lack of access to finance is a consequence of a series of market failures that form the basis for public policy intervention. The region's development banks and specialized agencies have thus designed programs to ease access to value chains and improve their performance. This paper suggests that the public sector could have a more effective role in enhancing value chain access and performance by embracing an integrated risk management approach to value chains. This approach will assist thepublic sector identify the various threats to which value chains are exposed, estimate the probability of occurrence and severity of such risks, and ensure risk prevention and mitigation through the use of a cost-effective combination of financial and nonfinancial instruments.

Supply chain management in Asia is a relatively novel topic but a key challenge for all Asian based manufacturers and traders when trying to integrate into the "global market". The purpose of the paper is to describe key supply chain issues faced in Asia. These issues are related to supply chain security that forces Asian firms to comply with numerous requirements as well as the importance of a properly managed supply chain in enhancing firms' competitiveness. The critical role played by Asian based logistics providers in facilitating supply chain integration is explored. Logistics providers must be able to design effective and efficient supply chains for the clients. A case study is presented to illustrate how supply chain dynamics affects supplier selection. This paper was presented at The Fifth LAEBA Annual Meeting, Singapore, July 15th, 2009.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are major sources of natural resource consumption and environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. At the same time, MSMEs make up a large part of the value chains of multinational and publicly traded companies, and thereforeoffer a unique point of entry to improve value chain environmental management practices while simultaneously promoting economic development in the region. In this vein, the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, aims to improve MSME competitiveness through increased efficiency of natural resource inputs, reduction of air and water pollution, gaining higher prices for products that are certified through reputable green certifications, and increasing MSME sales by strengthening their positioning within the value chains of large companies with sustainability commitments. To inform the MIF's strategic planning on how technical assistance can be best structured to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region through the promotion of best practices in natural resource management and environmental impact reduction, a study was undertaken by Trucost. As part of this study, Trucost's patented environmental extended input-output (EEIO) model was used to identify five economic sectors in LAC that are associated with the highest environmental implications regarding inputs (natural resource use) and outputs (environmental impacts) from production processes, specifically relating to the sectors' value chains. For each of these sectors, three large companies were identified for a more focused analysis of their activities relating to the management of value chain environmental impacts. A case study was developed for one large company per sector to document these in detail. This document summarizes the key findings and lessons learned from the case studies, indicating value chain sectors that can be targeted to most efficiently reduce value chain environmental impacts, as well as ways in which this targeting can be done.

Hundreds of millions of microenterprises in emerging economies face increased competition from the entry and expansion of large firms that offer similar products. This paper studies how one of the world's most prevalent microenterprises, neighborhood shops, confront competition from convenience chains (e.g., 7-Eleven) in Mexico. To address the endogeneity in time and location of chain store openings, I pair two-way fixed effects with a novel instrument that, at the neighborhood level, shifts the profitability of chains but not of shops. An expansion from zero to the average number of chain stores in a neighborhood reduces the number of shops by 15%. This reduction is not driven by increased shop exits but by decreased shop entries. Shops retain their sales of fresh products and 96% of their customers, but customers visit shops less often and spend less on non-fresh and packed goods. The evidence suggests that shops survive by exploiting comparative advantages stemming from being small and owner-operated, such as lower agency costs, relationships with the community, broader and tailored product mix, and informal credit. The welfare gains of convenience chains replacing shops are increasing in household income.

At present, the United States and its allies possess significant leverage over core segments of the supply chain used to produce these chips. This policy brief outlines actions the United States and its allies can take to secure that advantage in the long term and use it to promote the beneficial use of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence.
