This thesis explores the use of the Estill Voice Model, in particular six voice qualities (Speech, Twang, Falsetto, Cry/Sob, Belt and Opera) and their permutations, to define character, character traits and emotions. Traits and emotions that specific voice qualities can influence are, but are not limited to, location, age, background, socioeconomic status, genre, intelligence, nationality, class, culture, gender, promiscuity, disposition, pain and revelations. In particular, this thesis explores the use of voice qualities to show specific human qualities of the character "George" from Sondheim and Lapine's "Sunday in the Park with George" and the people he imitates in his painting by letting the characters' given circumstances (textual and subtextual), the way other actors portray the characters and the director's and musical director's input inform the choices in voice quality. By using the specific technical aspects of the Estill Voice Training System and combining them with the limi

This thesis aims to take a stylistic and narratological approach to the portrayal of . mothers by two contemporary women autobiographers. Through the analysis of linguistic features, the varied "voicing" of mothers in two contemporary women's autobiographies is examined. In Loma Sage's Bad Blood (2001) and Kim Chemin's In My Mother's House (2003, 1983) two very different portrayals ofthe mother "character" reflect the authors' perceptions of their mothers' personalities and expose the issues affecting the mother/daughter relationship. A mother's (or any character's) "voicing" may be achieved through the textual projection of point of view and the characterisation devices of speech and thought presentation, including the use of free indirect discourse, omniscience and a recently recognised phenomenon termed "intermentality". Within fiction it is commonly accepted that authors use these varied stylistic techniques, most especially free indirect discourse and omniscience. This study highlights the fact that autobiographers (and other nonfiction writers) may also use the very same stylistic techniques common to fiction. This apparent anomaly is not frequently addressed by narratologists, but it is my conclusion that these characterisation devices can be exploited for the portrayal of real people as well. In these autobiographies, the mother character appears powerful or meek, a hero or a victim, depending, in part, on the techniques used by the author to "voice" her. This thesis has found that autobiographers capitalize on the same stylistic techniques as writers of fiction to convey complex characterisations and complicated relationships.

In storytelling, one of the most important functions of dialogue is to create characterisation. Character voice is each character's unique style of speaking, which can impart explicit or implicit information about characters, such as their personality, age, or gender. Japanese language texts are known to use gendered language and role language (yakuwarigo) as a way of creating characterisation and character voice. This case study examines the English dialogue and the Japanese subtitles of four characters (Tissaia, Yennefer, Geralt, and Jaskier) from the series The Witcher. The aim was to categorize the strategies used to recreate the original character voice, to mark the differences in the character voices, and to examine their possible impact on the overall characterisations. The study concludes that the main strategy in creating character voice was gendered language and role language. Overall, the English and Japanese character voices were roughly equivalent with each other, and the used gendered language was supported by the characters’ personalities or appearance. The character Jaskier had the most differences between his English and Japanese dialogue, most likely due to the difficulties in recreating his brand of humorous tone in subtitle form.

Learner engagement has been considered one of the keys that can lead learners to successful learning in a multimedia learning environment such as digital game-based learning. Regarding this point, game-based learning advocates (e.g., Gee, 2003; Prensky, 2001) have asserted that digital games have great potential to engage learners. Nonetheless, there have been only a small number of empirical research studies of players' engagement, and there is little consensus on which elements of digital games critically engage people in play (Garris, Ahlers, & Driskell, 2002). Furthermore, despite the possibility that sensory stimuli can be factors influencing digital game players' engagement, there have been very few attempts to examine empirically the relationship between engagement and sensory stimuli. This study examined the effects of game characters' voice-over in digital games on players' engagement, by using a short digital role-playing game modified from Neverwinter Nights 2. A randomized control-group post-test only design was used to collect data from 74 participants (22 female, 52 male); engagement was measured by a modification of the Game Engagement Questionnaire (Brockmyer et al., 2009). Data analysis revealed that the GEQ mean scores of the participants who played the game with voice-over was much higher than that of the participants who played without voice-over. The difference of the mean scores between the two groups was statistically significant (t = 2.45, df = 72 p = .02), and the effect size, Cohen's d, was .58 (moderately significant). The results of this study will guide educational practitioners to the identification of more effective ways of adopting, developing, and modifying digital games for educational purposes, as well as furthering the research and guiding the practice in instructional multimedia design and development.

Zora Neale Hurston is a significant figure in American fiction and is strongly associated with the Harlem Renaissance, the period noted for the emergence of literature by people of African-American descent. Hurston worked as a writer of fiction and of anthropological research and this mini-thesis will discuss aspects of her novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, first published in 1937. While the novel traces the psychological development of the central female character, Janie Mae Crawford and, thus, demonstrates several features of a conventional Bildungsroman, the novel also contains some intriguing innovations in respect of narration and voice. These innovations imply that the novel can be read in terms of the qualities commonly associated with the Modernist novel. This contention becomes significant when it is understood that a considerable degree of critical responses to the novel have discounted these connections. The novel is widely accepted to be a story about a woman’s journey to self-actualisation through the relationships she has with the men in her life. Much of the criticism related to the novel is based on this aspect of it, with many stating that Janie’s voice is often silenced by the third-person narrator at crucial moments in the text and that, as a consequence, she does not achieve complete self-actualisation by the end of the novel. This thesis will examine the significance of the shifts between first-person and thirdperson narration and the manifestations of other voices or means of articulation, which give the novel a multi-vocal quality. The importance of this innovation will also be considered, particularly when it is taken into account that Hurston sought to incorporate some elements associated with the oral tradition into her work as a writer of fiction.

The poems in A Rat-Shaped Tear consider wide-ranging ideas of otherness using character and voice. Through misdirection, understatement and unexpected imagery I confront ideas of animal and female otherness in playful ways as a means of subverting traditional impressions of both. The othering effects of grief are also examined in poems that reflect on bereavement and mortality. Human-animal interaction is used to further explore the effects of death and disappointment, though overtones of cartoonish extravagance, dark humour and the surreal temper the more serious themes of loss, disillusionment and loneliness that recur within the collection. In the accompanying thesis, I focus on the work of three poets - D.H Lawrence, Marianne Moore and Elizabeth Bishop - each of whom confront animal otherness in their work. Through close examinations of their individual works, I explore the differences in approach to human-animal interaction, and the ways in which these poets draw meaning from animal otherness. It is suggested that although they engage with the concept using varied poetic techniques, they are drawn together by the intimations of spiritual transcendence that permeate each of their animal poetics.

Some research has been done on this subject, although sparsely. The purpose of this study is to determine how, why, and to what extent representation in fiction matters, in regard to socially stigmatized groups of people, focusing on mental health, sexuality, and gender roles. The main focus is on bonding with fictional characters, how it relates to representation and its importance. Eleven (cis)female participants shared their own experiences with this. Each written reply was condensed, eventually narrowed down to three main components considered central to this phenomenon; (1) a sense of isolation, (2) an inability to cope, and (3) relatability in characters. These components can all be connected to loneliness, which suggests that loneliness plays a large part in one's sense of self-worth. Thus, representation can be argued to be vital, due to its function of including and speaking for stigmatized groups of people, granting a sense of belonging and support.

Knowing human behavior and the societies through the literary text, without losing its artistic character, it becomes a research as possible when considering that each novel brings various social voices that reveal the thought or ideology of an age, according to Mikhail Bakhtin.. It will be analyzed in this study how the 19th century and contemporary societies react in front of women who live a double life. Machado de Assis introduces us, in Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (2012), Virgília that through dissimulation maintains a double life. Marçal Aquino, in Eu receberia as piores notícias dos seus lindos lábios, features a protagonist Lavínia, which by means of psycho-emotional instability also maintains a double life.

The study of character strengths is a relatively new area of research within the realm of positive psychology. Character strengths likely develop during childhood and therefore studying young children's capacities for talking about their perceptions of character strengths is important. This thesis sought to use children's voices and conduct an exploratory qualitative study into children's capacity to talk about perceptions of their own and others character strengths. The purpose of the research was two-fold, first, to create a developmentally appropriate methodology for obtaining children's perceptions of character strengths, and second, if children had the capacity to talk about character strengths, to discover how they did so. Seventeen five-and-a-half to six-year-old children participated in individual interviews at their school. After a review of the methodological issues involved with obtaining children's voices in research, four developmentally appropriate strategies utilising a story, puppets, a photo and direct interviewing strategies were created. The four strategies were tested in a pilot study, revised, and then utilised in the main study. The strategies created were found to be developmentally appropriate, and assisted children to varying degrees to talk about their perceptions. At least one character strength was able to be inferred from all children's responses. Affiliation, kindness and self-regulation were the most identified character strengths. Results indicated the children were on the cusp of developing their sense of self and the ability to verbalise their positive internal attributes. Differences in the way children talked about character strengths are discussed in reference to child development and the social nature of character strengths.

Students in accelerated curricula tend to have greater stress when compared to students in general education (Suldo, Shaunessy, & Hardesty, 2008). It is important for stakeholders to be able to help these students reach their goals and attain happiness. One potential method to help these students is to attend to their character strengths. People who effectively utilize their character strengths have achieved numerous positive outcomes including greater levels of well-being, self-esteem, and positive affect (Proctor, Malby, & Linley, 2011; Quinlan, Swain, Cameron, & Vella-Brodrick, 2014; Wood, Linley, Maltby, Kashan, & Hurling, 2011). Unfortunately, there is a lack of research on students’ strengths, and there is no research looking specifically at the strengths of students in accelerated curricula. This study addressed this gap in the literature by examining the character strengths of students in accelerated curricula. Participants included 253 ninth-grade students in accelerated curricula, specifically enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) classes or a pre-International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program. A mixed-method design was utilized. For the quantitative part of the study, the researcher looked at the most frequent self-identified character strengths of all the participants and examined if the endorsed strengths differed for subgroups of students based on ethnicity, academic program, academic risk, or emotional risk. The most prevalent strength was humor, followed by love, creativity, kindness and curiosity. More Asian students identified with love of learning compared to students from other ethnic groups, and more White students identified with social intelligence. Across program, more AP students identified with creativity and fairness, and more IB students identified with self-regulation and kindness. In regard to risk status, more students without academic risk identified with persistence/perseverance. More students without emotional risk identified with creativity, persistence/perseverance, leadership, and teamwork, whereas more students with emotional risk identified with love, hope, and humor. For the qualitative part of the study, the researcher examined a subset of 121 participants who participated in a selective intervention because they were identified as demonstrating early signs of academic or emotional risk. The researcher examined how these students described their behaviors and actions in a way that illustrated their strengths. The qualitative analyses revealed three main themes: Manifestation, Importance, and Origination. This thesis can assist educators understand how high-achieving students describe and view their character strengths as meaningful. The rich descriptions of each character strength can be useful for educators in targeting character strengths in students and creating strengths-based interventions to increase students’ happiness and overall flourishing, according to the PERMA framework (which is made up of positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment). Further research should be conducted on why strengths differ between AP and IB students, as those findings may have implications for those who participate and ultimately succeed in these rigorous programs.

The changes and upheaval in English society and in English ideas which took place during the seventeenth century had a profound effect upon public and private perceptions of women and of women's various roles in society. A study of the drama of this period provides the means to examine the development of these new views through the popular medium of the stage. In particular, the study of adaptations of early drama offer the opportunity to compare the stage perceptions of women which were prevalent during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century with attitudes towards women which emerged during the Restoration and early eighteenth century; such an examination of these differing perceptions of women has not yet been undertaken. The adaptation of Shakespearean plays provide the most profitable study in this area; Shakespeare was not only a highly influential playwright, but was also one of the most adapted of all the early dramatists during the years of the Restoration. In order to facilitate this survey, I have selected plays which span the entire Restoration era, beginning with William Davenant's The Law Against Lovers and Macbeth as well as John Lacy's Sauny the Scot from the 1660's, through the late 1670's and early 1680's with Edward Ravenscroft's Titus Andronicus and Nahum Tate's The Ingratitude of a Common-Wealth, and finally into the reign of Anne Stuart with William Burnaby's Love Betray'd. The study of these plays offers the best opportunity for the examination, through the medium of the theatre, of the changes which occurred in the perception of women and their changing identity with the rapidly evolving society of Renaissance and Restoration English society.

The West Coast of the South Island has a particular history distinct from other regions of New Zealand because of its physical isolation, its sparse and fragmented Maori occupation, its lack of suitability for farm settlement, and its social and economic links with Australia through nineteenth century shipping routes; many of the goldminers who first populated the region came via the Victoria goldfields and had little relationship with other South Island settlements. This thesis begins with a chronological annotated bibliography of imaginative writing with the West Coast as its setting, then analyses this writing in terms of the West Coast landscape, its settlement history and its four major physical resources – pounamu, gold, coal and timber – and the way in which each has influenced the literature. It further examines the work of five West Coast writers, Jean Devanny, Peter Hooper, Keri Hulme, Jeffrey Paparoa Holman and Peter Hawes, in the context of their imaginative portrayal of the characteristics of the region. It concludes that there is a discernible perception among New Zealanders, fostered particularly by novelists and film-makers who have set their work on the Coast, that the region has iconic status and represents values and attitudes which appeal to the wider audience as distinctive. In his 1940 attempt to encourage a national literature, Monte Holcroft wrote that, “…the spirit of a country, recognisable in history and literature, is a kind of collective definition undertaken by a line of creative writers.” New Zealand has long since developed a healthy diversity of creative literature, but it is argued in this thesis that Holcroft’s definition can now be restated in regional terms; the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand has its own spirit, is in a sense another country, and has been so defined by its creative fiction.

In spite of the growing interest of Russian and Western scholars in Sergei Dovlatov and his art, his place in Russian literature has not yet been clearly defined. His position as a writer in Russia in the 1960s and early 70s was ambiguous due to his opposition to the traditional Soviet canon and rejection by the current literary establishment. However, he later gained recognition and popularity as an emigre writer in the United States. The concept of 'marginality' colours his biography and art, for his life itself was a succession of marginal experiences and marginality is the key topic of his writings.
Marginality unifies Dovlatov's art. This is evident in his marginal status as a writer in and outside the Soviet Union, and in his writing which uses the underappreciated short form of narration (the novella and short story), develops a non-traditional conversational style, pursues the themes of non-conventional behaviour and introduces eccentric characters.
However, it is not possible to discuss Dovlatov's status as a marginal writer without contextualizing his life and art in the ambience of the entire generation of Leningrad writers of the sixties. Writers and poets such as Brodskii, Goliavkin, Gubin, Vakhtin and Ufliand do not only represent the culture of Leningrad's artistic non-conformists, they are also Dovlatov's prototypes and protagonists. Apart from their marginal status, all these writers shared the determination to make independent choices in life and in art. They refused to be viewed as marginal authors by the dominant canon, which disregarded their works as insignificant. Here as well marginality emerges as a literary concept and a behavioural model, shaped by societal norms (the positive type of citizen or official Soviet writer) and traditional canons (the Russian didactic tradition or Soviet ideological writing). This literary concept includes an orientation towards American literature, the creation of marginal characters and themes as well as an exploration of different styles.
The works of writers of the Leningrad circle laid the foundation for the emergence of a literary phenomenon such as Dovlatov. It is in delineating this context that this dissertation demonstrates Dovlatov's original approach to marginality, as well as the way he turned his life experience into literature and became a spokesman for neglected fellow writers and citizens.

The book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, written by the prolific author J.K.Rowling, is a popular piece of fiction that has been adapted into a film as well as severalvideogames. The book has also been translated from its original English into dozens oflanguages, including Japanese. Translations can differ from their original counterparts, especially when the languages in question differ in their syntax and cultural norms. Thesedifferences can potentially alter the original author’s intended character portrayals. This project aimed to evaluate the effect of gendered language and yakuwarigo on charactervoices in the Japanese translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Fourcharacters – Hermione, Hagrid, Dumbledore, and McGonagall – were evaluated bymeans of their spoken dialogue in the book. The English lines of dialogue and their Japanesecounterparts were extracted from the book and analysed. The results of the dialogue-analysis show that the dialogue in the Japanese version of thebook was more gendered, and exhibited typical signs of role language. These findingswere corroborated through the use of separate questionnaires for Japanese and Englishparticipants. The questionnaires asked participants to determine the gender and role ofcharacters purely on the basis of certain lines in the book, with no external contextprovided. Japanese participants managed to identify both the gender and role of charactersmore accurately.

The genesis of this work is to demarcate the area of the writer Nélida Piñon in the female authorship literature reflecting about the access roads that were opened when the author retook one of the most well-known and mythical character of the Universal Literature – Scherezade – in the novel Voices of the Desert (2004). So, this study allowed to realize a more accurate reflection about this character’s construction from the perspective of feminist criticism (SHOWALTER, 1994) bringing out the feminine condition in a hegemonic system, coercity and patriarchal that legitimizes the power situations, submission, oppression and violence against women. Therefore, this work is an invitation to know Nélida Piñon’s contribution in contemporary evolution and women’s emancipation awareness who dared to transgress the boundaries of time and space to promote their visibility, independence, freedom and recognition as a subject of the history. These aspects allow to gaze on the three phases: feminine, feminist and female of the Women’s literature established by Elaine Showalter. Although this novel has been little researched by Brazilian criticism yet, it is also important to the gynocritical studies because the gynocriticism speech is a critical and specialized speech about texts written by women. So, this dissertation intends to enhance (value) the female who stars not only the history but makes possible the rise of her own destiny in the world. To conclude, the writer is outstanding name for the Brazilian Literary Universe and she demonstrates a deep knowledge about women’s history and, therefore, attentive and compromised with the current social political and cultural Brazilian scenery

The PhD research entitled Visões do (des)encanto: um estudo sobre o feminino transgressor em Clarice Lispector e Maria Judite de Carvalho aims to study the females characters of these writers in the works Laços de família (1960) and Flores ao telefone (1968), taking as its starting point the relationship between the creation of characters and women social roles in this epoch. The literary project of two authors talks about the female social changes and transformations, from which appears the need to give voice to women through their fictional figures. The opposition between fate/freedom is discussed in the everyday middle-class female characters used to live in the shadow of men, who do not create a place for themselves in the world. The authors focus on the society, showing the difficulties and failures of their characters that so often need to break with the social conduct to be free. This process of breaking the characters in the univese of the two authors is studied bsed on the theoretical study on various aspects of the feminine in The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir.

This learner-oriented study investigated the character and Bushou information from first year textbooks, Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1 and Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 2, that are used by the participants; participants’ understanding and acquisition of Bushou; and their attitude on bringing in formal Bushou instruction to first year Chinese language courses. The study first classified all the characters that appear in the vocabulary lists in the 20 lessons from a set of first year textbooks that the participants use. Then it identified, organized, and analyzed the Bushou that appear in the characters. After soliciting and understanding students’ perceptions of Bushou and opinions on Bushou teaching and learning, and their acquisition of Bushou knowledge, a suggestion will be made on whether or not Bushou should be taught in class in this particular program. Sixty-eight students in Chinese classes from the elementary and intermediate Chinese classes participated in the study. The study findings revealed that students in both levels have a fragmented understanding of the concept of Bushou and a low level of Bushou knowledge; however, based on the descriptive analyses of the survey on Bushou teaching and learning, students in these two levels consider Bushou knowledge to be helpful for character learning and the majority of the participant want like to receive formal in-class instruction on Bushou. The study results suggest that curriculum developers should consider incorporating formal Bushou instruction into their first year Chinese language program.

The Voice in the works of André du Bouchet, is at the foundation and the result of the text corpus, the origin and horizon of the poem. It is dependent on the exiguous space lying simultaneously beyond meaning and lack of meaning. Transcending the writing/oral expression dichotomy characterizing Western traditional metaphysics, the poet identifies it as swaying somehow from the expressed to the imprinted, from a “meaning to say” to a “keeping under silence”. The Voice is the “sign” of noise or silence. It is void of all pre-established and irreducible meaning at the very moment it comes to be perceived in the language order, yet it inhabits it. The meaning of words only constitutes itself in the delivery phase that brings them into speech and encompasses physicality and spatiality as a whole. Resounding in a space looking outward, the Voice is the expression of a peculiar “space-time-place-world” when it is listened to. It is only this listening that makes it possible to hear the emergence of existing elements in words. As a true potential and permissive opening to a permanent “meaning to say”, the Voice loses its status of epiphenomenon (a simple sound expression of primitive thought) to gain that of event. It is this speech that says nothing that we are forced to acknowledge without reaching a conclusion

This thesis attempts to investigate different characters’ voices and how each speaker’s discourse are influenced and controlled by religion, social class, family, gender and education in John Fowles’s A Maggot via M. M. Bakhtin’s heteroglossia. Moreover, the thesis presents that how Fowles arranges an interrogator to practice legal interrogations ingeniously to make all speakers’ voices are listened totally and via the interrogations and their discourses to show the multi-problems and pressure that they have to confront in the 18th-century British society. At the end of the thesis, it expresses that multi-voices result in an open-ending. This thesis consists of five chapters. The introduction explains the fundamental motifs of the thesis and its relation with Bakhtin’s theory—heteroglossia. Chapter Two deals with in the 18th-century British conventional society, how religion has impact on people’s daily lives, as well as how religious influence permeates people’s discourses. Chapter Three concentrates on the situation that people were deeply controlled by social-class system in the 18th-century British society. Under the oppression of high social class’ authority, Fowles gives his lower-working-class characters chances to speak for themselves and show their thoughts. Chapter Four investigates the topic of gender—Fowles presents that different genders have influence on the speakers’ speaking styles and contents. Male or female presents his/ her own speaking features via different genders. Although men occupy the authoritative position, it does not mean women are always under men’s control and the heroine of the novel is the best example. Both male and female can show his and her speaking styles. Female is no longer silent. Chapter Five will be the conclusion. After the speakers’ heteroglossia, what they left to the listeners are the speakers’ multi-discourses and multi-conclusions. However, there is no one can offer a definite truth for the enigma in the novel to the listeners. There is no single truth to the enigma of the novel even via the analyses of religion, social class and gender. In the end, heteroglossia brings us listeners an endless state—a mysterious state.

Abstract Though the relation between one’s voice and his/her character may not absolutely relate, there exists a favored or stereotyped voice-character pattern in every culture. In this thesis, we discuss the favored voice-character combinations in Taiwan’s culture. The analyzing data here come from three Mandarin dubbed cartoons televised in Taiwan. Due to cartoon’s highly stereotyped design, it could help to find the Taiwanese favored voice-character patterns and the relation between the voice and the character. The voices are discussed in six acoustic features, and they are pitch value, pitch variation in sentences, amplitude value, amplitude variation in sentences, speech rate, and voice quality. There are eleven pairs of character adjectives discussed in this thesis, and they are self-doubting/confident, introvert/extrovert, bad/good, timid/bold, cautious/rash, lazy/energetic, solemn/humorous, submissive/dominant, calm/unsteady, indifferent/passionate, and ugly/pretty. According to the results, we find that a confident, extrovert, dominant, energetic, and bold character is related to the voice features of stronger amplitude, larger pitch variation, faster speech rate, and no breathy voice; character features of being passionate, better, and prettier are related to the voices of higher pitch value, larger pitch variation, faster speech rate, clearer, laxer voice qualities; and a rash, humorous, and unsteady character is related to the voice aspects of clearness, tenseness and amplitude. Besides, a pleasant voice is related to a higher pitch value, a clear and lax voice. The dubbing voice suitable for a main character is higher in pitch value, stronger in amplitude, faster in speech rate, and clear in voice quality. Keywords: voice, character, cartoon dubbing, pitch, amplitude, speech rate, voice quality

This study presents research relevant to the performance of four different mezzo-soprano songs from musicals composed by Stephen Sondheim. The research first gives a comprehensive overview of the contributions of Sondheim to the American Musical Theatre genre, and compares and contrasts his treatment of mezzo-soprano characters with that of his contemporaries. The project also investigates details regarding cultural and historical influences over the four musicals. Additionally, the study includes character analyses and musical analyses for each of the selected characters and their respective songs. The research is synthesized in order to provide suggestions of ways mezzo-sopranos can incorporate this research into their performance, in order to give a more informed and educated presentation of the selected pieces.
The contributions of Stephen Sondheim -- Mezzo-sopranos of the American musical -- Amy in Company (1970) -- Beth in Merrily we roll along (1981) -- The bakers wife in Into the woods (1987) -- Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme in Assassins (1990).
