Classic comparative statics methods relies most commonly on functional form assumptions in order to explicitly derive relations between endogenous and exogenous variables, on the implicit function theorem when no functional form is assumed, or in duality theories when a dual functions exists. Among the several properties an agent’s preferences may have there are two known for it’s interesting results. First, the single-crossing property, that allows for the ordering of a population of agents with respect to a particular classification of the options available. And secondly, the single-peaked property, that rules out the occurrence of condorcet cycles when the decision system is majority vote by pairs. In this paper we characterize some sufficient and necessary conditions over choice correspondences so that they have a pseudo-rational representation satisfying these properties.

Revealed preferences link choices, preferences, and welfare when choices appear consistent. The first chapter assesses how much structure is necessary to impose on a model to provide precise welfare guidance based on inconsistent choices. We use data sets from the lab and field to evaluate the predictive power of two conservative “model-free” approaches of behavioral welfare analysis. We find that for most individuals, these approaches have high predictive power, which means there is little ambiguity about what should be selected from each choice set. We show that the predictive power of these approaches correlates highly with two properties of revealed preferences. The second chapter introduces a method for eliciting the set of best alternatives of decision makers, in line with the theory on revealed preferences, but at odds with the current practice. We allow decision makers to choose several alternatives, provide an incentive for each alternative chosen, and then randomly select one for payment. We derive the conditions under which we partially or fully identify the set of best alternatives. The third chapter applies the method in an experiment. We fully identify the set of best alternatives for 18% of subjects and partially identify it for another 40%. We show that complete, reflexive, and transitive preferences rationalize 40% of observed choices in the experiment. Going beyond, we show that allowing for menu-dependent choices while keeping classical preferences rationalize 96% of observed choices. Besides, eliciting sets allows us to conclude that indifference is significant in the experiment, and underestimate by the classical method

A conception of the Correspondence Principle which Bohr deployed implicitly in developing a new theory of atomic constitution in 1913, is made explicit through an extensive examination of his classic paper of that year. Arguments are considered which purport to show that the application of the principle must be restricted to few isolated cases. These arguments are either defused or rejected. In particular an extensive review of issues concerning the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics is made to counter the claims that an insurmountable conceptual gap exits between the tenets of this theory and those of Classical Mechanics which makes it logically impossible for the latter to be regarded as the 'limiting case' of the former. In the light of a particular interpretation adopted and defended, a proposal is made that suggests that the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of Classical Mechanics, as well as Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, can be viewed as 'limiting cases' of Quantum Mechanics. Having established a case for the global validity of the requirement imposed on physics by the Correspondence Principle, it is then argued that this requirement is indispensable if a particular brand of realism is adopted for the interpretation of theories in physics. Taking on board the assumption that an ultimate theory exists which mirrors the underlying physical constitution of the world, it is subsequently argued that the intertheory order established by the global imposition of the principle in physics, can be used to solve the problem of rational theory choice for this brand of realism.

Obesity is a contributing factor to many diseases. Unhealthy food choices are a behavior that can lead to obesity. Teaching children to make healthy food choices at an early age could lead to healthy food choices throughout a lifetime, which would mitigate potential for obesity. A number of different treatments have evaluated healthy food choices in children; however, many did not evaluate or show maintenance effects. The purpose of this study was to utilize correspondence training to acquire healthy food choices in preschoolers and to evaluate of natural communities of reinforcement as a maintenance procedure. Results showed that correspondence training is likely to increase healthy food choices in most preschoolers; however, maintenance of healthy snack choices is variable.

Resumo:
The evolutionary forces that led to the unprecedented expansion of the human brain and the extreme cognitive prowess possessed by humans have always attracted a great deal of attention from the scientific community. Presented here is a novel theoretical perspective, where the driving force on human brain evolution was the need for enhanced ability to infer social values of conspecifics in the face of degradation and loss of chemosensory signalling mechanisms necessary for social communication present in most mammals. The lack of chemosensory communication of biologically relevant information between humans in the face of the need to make adaptive and accurate social evaluations, led to an exaption of mammalian chemosensory brain regions for the more complex task of inferring social values from behavioural cues that are variable, ambiguous, or otherwise difficult to detect and interpret. This change in social processing from perceptual evaluation to inferential computation placed a premium on cognitive capacity, thus selecting for larger more powerful brains. These selective processes would have left an indelible mark on the human brain, where the human homologues of regions involved in mammalian conspecific chemical communication, in particular the target regions of this study the amygdala and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPC), should be involved in the processing of biologically relevant information and social inference. Several experiments were conducted to examine the role of these brain regions in social inferential processing using the lesion deficit method. First, given that conspecific chemical communication is particularly relevant for biologically imperative evaluation for the purposes of reproduction, VMPC and amygdala damage may result in abnormal mate-related decisions. Second, normal social attributions exhibit the correspondence bias, however damage to the target regions may result in an abnormal lack correspondence bias. Third, the current hypothesis is contrasted with another leading hypothesis, the Social Brain Hypothesis whose proponents predict a relationship between group-size and social cognition. Finally, if the target brain regions are truly integral in inferring social information, then damage to these regions will interfere with the ability to utilize transitive inference in social situations, and potentially in using transitive inference in general. Damage to the target areas produces limited effects on mate-related decisions and preferences. However, the current hypothesis may suggest that the target brain regions are only involved when the problem is inferential in nature rather than simpler perception of social information. In support of this notion, damage to the target regions results in a lack of the correspondence bias when making economic decisions. This alteration in social attributions actually leads to more `rational' decision-making in this context. In contrast to the predictions of the Social Brain Hypothesis, damage to the target regions produces no observed reduction in social group size, nor is there any observed relationship between perspective-taking ability and group size. Finally, damage to the VMPC produces deficits in using transitive inference in a non-social context perhaps hinting at the underlying computations of this region in inferring social information. In conclusion, it appears that the notion that the human brain regions that have been exapted from their duties in chemosensation and communication in mammalian brains has at least some validity. Moreover, these brain regions have been shifted by evolution to a more computationally complex process of social inference possibly providing the push toward larger and more powerful human brains.

This thesis has a central question: How the economic, cultural and academic capital of university applicants from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul affects their choices of higher education degrees. To answer that question we made a quantitative analysis relying on the software SPSS 13.0. The research selected a sample of 21 degrees of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The statistical model has 8 independent variables to account for the applicants’ economic, cultural and academic capital. The main hypothesis is that applicants with a high level of economic, cultural and academic capital tend to choose the most disputed and prestigious degrees whereas applicants with a low level of capital are more likely to choose the less disputed and prestigious degrees. The second hypothesis is that there is an additional factor that has an impact on applicants’ choice of a higher education course, relative to the institutional dimension. The results confirm both hypotheses. There is a statistical correlation between the volume of economic, cultural and academic capital possessed by individuals and the choice of more prestigious degrees. However the institutional dimension is also present. For instance the study shows that Law and Administration degrees both attract different applicant profiles depending on whether classes are offered mainly at night or during daytimes. Night classes attract applicants with a lower volume of economic, cultural and academic capital as compared to applicants that choose to attend daytime classes. Therefore we can say that besides the influence of economic, cultural and academic capital there is an institutional dimension that also interferes with applicants’ choices.

For centuries, French was the language of international commercial and diplomatic relations, a near-dominant language in literature and poetry, and was widely used in teaching. It even became the fashionable language of choice in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for upper class Dutch, Russians, Italians, Egyptians, and others for personal correspondence, travel journals, and memoirs. This book is the first to take a close look at how French was used in that latter context: outside of France, in personal and private life. It gathers contributions from historians, literary scholars, and linguists and covers a wide range of geographical areas.

The correspondence between Leibniz and Samuel Clarke—mediated by Leibniz’s erstwhile friend and disciple at the electoral court in Hanover, Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach, princess of Wales—is arguably the most famous and influential of philosophical correspondences. In this chapter, I begin by tracing the background of the correspondence and the role that Caroline played in its inception and development. I then turn to a discussion of the main themes of the correspondence, paying particular attention to the importance of Caroline’s presence in shaping the themes of the debate: the principle of sufficient reason, the identity of indiscernibles, God’s choice in creating this world, space and time, God’s presence and activity in the world, miracles, and gravity.

This chapter focuses on Adorno’s understanding of the category of judgment. Proceeding from Adorno’s apodictic interpretation of a poem by the German Biedermeier writer Eduard Mörike, it reconstructs what it might mean for Adorno to argue for the critical practice of judging by refraining from judgment. Mörike’s children’s poem “Mousetrap Rhyme” is the only poem that Adorno chooses to quote in its entirety in his Aesthetic Theory. His surprising choice reveals how the uncoercive gaze can never be reduced to a set of ideological operations or a priori correspondences but rather must confront, in the space of the work of art, the question of its judgment—and the typically unspoken premises and presuppositions of any judgment—always one more time. Here, the uncoercive gaze fastens upon the artwork in a way that allows art to become world without reducing the art to the condition of being merely that which already is the case or that which already claims to be world. The artwork keeps alive the singular form of judgment as judgment without judging, in which the ultimate arrest of judgment remains deferred in virtue of another judgment, based on a future critical engagement, that is always still to come.

• Is a crossword puzzle clue a definition of a word? • Can you enter to exit? • Are unrecoverable errors recoverable? • How can a word like “caution” mean “guarantee”? • What is it that happens unless you do something else? . . . This chapter is about the ways in which elements of language are at times able to correspond to each other in usage and in meaning. It explains equivalence, the baseline for distinctions between words, and clarifies widespread misconceptions about synonyms. It shows that words have values that are sometimes obvious and sometimes concealed. These concepts are relevant to all word choices in language, and they must be considered with due attention with translation of a user interface or documentation into another language. Ambiguity and culture are the two big issues that will inevitably come to the fore at such a time. It will also become clear that there are gaps to be filled in languages, and that interference and confusion are bound to get in the way. Multiple language environments create their own special demands with respect to all of these concepts. In a typical crossword puzzle, we are asked to think of words that correspond to descriptions or suggestions of their meaning. Because a crossword is a kind of game, the clues may well be phrased so as to make the word discovery difficult. By contrast, in dictionaries, descriptions of meaning are meant to correspond much more directly to designated words. A direct link is made between a particular language element—a word or phrase—and the language used to express its meaning, which stands in or substitutes for that element in a variety of ways. Definition is one way, within one language; translation is another way, between languages. Equivalence, in the sense of a perfect match on the level of meaning, may be achieved through definition, which draws on a rich range of language resources, but equivalence is much more problematic in translation. In translation into a target language, a word with exactly the same meaning may not exist.

In this chapter, I focus on vowel phonemes. Because a study that is strictly based on a distinction between legal and illegal spellings has some serious problems, this chapter employs a more descriptive and qualitative approach. I discuss how the first graders in the study spelled each vowel phoneme of English. What do the children’s spellings reveal about their knowledge of the English writing system and about their knowledge of spoken English? The analyses reported in Chapter 3 uncovered some factors that affect how children spell phonemes. For the children in this study, the most important of these factors was exposure to phoneme-grapheme correspondences in printed words: Children used frequent correspondences more often than infrequent correspondences. Another factor was letter names: Children used correspondences in which the name of the grapheme contained the phoneme more often than correspondences in which the name of the grapheme did not contain the phoneme. A third factor was formal teaching: Children were more often correct on correspondences that were taught in the classroom than on correspondences that were not directly taught. In this chapter, I ask how these and other factors influenced the children’s spelling of specific vowel phonemes. Sometimes, the children’s choices of spellings for vowel phonemes mirrored the choices embodied in the English writing system. The children used the spellings that occur most frequently in English, whether or not these spellings were explicitly taught. In other cases, the children’s choices did not mirror the conventional ones. There are two different ways in which this occurred. First, the children sometimes used a spelling that is illegal in the conventional system; that is, a grapheme that never represents the phoneme. In these cases, something other than knowledge of conventional spelling must explain the “invented” spelling. I ask what the reasons are. In discussing these illegal substitutions, I have chosen, somewhat arbitrarily, a cut-off of 2.5%. Illegal substitutions that occurred at rates of 2.5% or more out of all spellings are singled out for discussion. A second way in which children’s choices sometimes failed to mirror those of conventional English was in overuse of particular spellings.

The benefits of applying market demand models in engineering design have been well established. Arguably the most common approach has been to apply a random utility model, although any representation of market demand based on customers’ responses to surveys or in market situations can be used to this end. In practice, various methods have been used to collect market data through the use of surveys, typically based either on choices from among sets of alternatives or statements of willingness-to-pay. The applicability of the data collected has been limited, however, by the complexity of the relationships between market research methods and market demand models. The prospects of reusing an enormous amount of available market research data and increasing practitioners’ freedom in applying market research data to forecast market demand compel us to investigate the correspondence between market demand models. In this paper, we build on the recent work of Cook and Wissmann to demonstrate a bilateral correspondence between the popular multinomial logit model and Cook’s S-Model. Results from two independent case studies are presented showing that the utility function in a multinomial logit model may be reparameterized as a value function in the S-Model and vice-versa. The techniques demonstrated in this paper for defining direct comparisons between previously incompatible market research methods and demand models provide the practitioner with powerful new capabilities for validating market models, fusing market models to expand customer-based trade spaces, and presenting results to decision-makers in familiar formats.

Abstract This article presents a cubic spline algorithm for interpolation on the rotation group SO(3). Given an ordered set of rotation matrices and knot times, the algorithm generates a twice-differentiable curve on SO(3) that interpolates the given rotation matrices at their specified times. In our approach SO(3) is locally parametrized by the Cayley parameters, and the generated curve is cubic in the sense that the Cayley parameter representation is a cubic polynomial. The resulting algorithm is a computationally efficient way of generating bi-invariant (i.e., invariant with respect to choice of both inertial and body-fixed frames) trajectories on the rotation group that does not require the evaluation of transcendental functions, and can also be viewed as an approximation to a minimum angular acceleration trajectory. Because the Cayley parameters provide a one-to-one correspondence between R3 and a dense set of SO(3), the resulting trajectories do not have the “multiple winding” effect that occurs in several existing methods.

Abstract: From 1920 Le Corbusier began to develop a theoretical body on the objects design that went spreading through his writings and lectures. Books like Vers une architecture, L'art décoratif d'aujourd'hui or Précisions sur un état présent de l'architecture et de l'urbanisme have constituted a rich legacy of interlinked ideas and images to analyze the proposal of the architect from the level of theory. However, the power of its principles was continuously experienced and corroborated by his work in furniture, to the point of establishing direct relations between theory and work. This joint development provides a comprehensive overview of modern furniture concept developed by Le Corbusier. Therefore, this research aims on the one hand, to expose a 'Corbusian' and specific theoretical body of modern equipment, with special reference to the principles and original drawings by the architect; and, secondly, to check the real correspondence between his theories and works by analyzing a choice selection of works by the architect belonging to the interwar period, to finally offer a 'Corbusian' characterization of modern furniture.Palabras clave: Teoría; mobiliario; moderno; escritos. ABSTRACT Background: One of strategic goals of the Population and Family Planning Board for the 2015-2019 period is to increase active family planning participants using the Long-Term Contraception Method (MKJP). This method is emphasized by the government because it is the most effective way to reduce the birth rate. However, the data show that the interest in using MKJP by women of fertile age is still lower than that of using non-MKJP. This study aimed to determine the factors that influence the selection of MKJP among fertile aged women at public health center, Depok, West Java. Subjects and Methods: This was an analytic observational study with a cross sectional design. The study was conducted at Sukmajaya public health center, Depok, West Java, Indonesia, from March to May 2019. A sample of 84 reproductive-age women was selected for this study. The dependent variable was choice of long term contraception. The independent variables were age, education, knowledge, income, employment status, number of children, and husband support. The data were collected by a questionnaire and analyzed using a multiple logistic regression. Results: The choice of long-term contraceptive method increased with age > 35 years (OR = 2.84; 95% CI= 0.86 to 9.42), high education (OR= 3.40; 95% CI = 0.51 to 22.67), the number of children ≥ 3 (OR = 1.25; 95% CI= 0.36 to 4.38), working mothers (OR= 4.98; 95% CI= 1.06 to 23.40), income> Minimum Regional Wage (OR= 0.21; 95% CI= 0.05 to 0.85), high knowledge (OR= 5.01; 95% CI= 1.33 to 18.85), and strong husband support (OR= 2.04, 95% CI= 0.34 to 11.44). Conclusion: Factors that influence the choice of long term contraception methods are age, education, number of children, employment status, income, knowledge and support of husbands.
