Resumo:

Single spin asymmetry measurements ([Formula: see text]) of the azimuthal distribution of charged pions inside jets produced in transversely polarized proton collisions are sensitive to the transversity distribution and the Collins fragmentation function. The STAR Detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is well suited for these types of measurements as it is capable of full jet reconstruction and charged pion identification in the mid-rapidity region ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]). We report here the first observation of Collins [Formula: see text] asymmetries in [Formula: see text] GeV [Formula: see text] collisions.

Abstract. Complex crop models have been developed to simulate the interactions among biophysical processes and to extend experimental results beyond the local soil and climate conditions. However, in-depth studies on a model’s capability to predict crop growth under different conditions are sparse, and the question of whether a crop model outperforms a simple water production function (WPF) has not been answered. The objective of this study was to compare the predictive ability of a complex crop model with simple WPFs for yield and biomass estimation at three sites (Greeley, Fort Collins, and Akron) in eastern Colorado. Specifically, the CERES-Maize crop model in the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM2), which has been applied extensively in eastern Colorado for simulating maize growth, was compared to crop WPFs based on irrigation and rainfall amounts during growing seasons. Results showed that the predictive ability of CERES-Maize depended on which datasets were used for model parameterization, and that WPFs in general performed as good as or better than CERES-Maize based on a modified F-test after considering experimental uncertainties. The ability of CERES-Maize and the WPF derived from Greeley (2008-2011) to predict maize yield in Greeley (2012-2013), Fort Collins (2006-2010), and Akron (1984-1986) depended on year and site. WPFs outperformed CERES-Maize for Greeley (2012-2013) and Fort Collins (2006-2010) but performed similarly for Akron (1984-1986). This study also identified the need to improve crop model responses to water stress, especially at different growth stages, for cropping systems models to be adequate for estimating the impacts of irrigation management on yield. Ultimately, the choice between the use of a complex crop model and a simpler WPF depends on the purpose of the user and the required accuracy. We present the preliminary results of the measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries of two charged pions in the inclusive process [Formula: see text] in the BESIII experiment. These asymmetries are attributed to the so-called Collins fragmentation function, which depict the behavior of a hadron produced from a transversely polarized quark. This spin-dependent function is an important input for the global analysis of extracting the transversity inside the nucleon. In addition, by comparison with the measured asymmetries at Belle, this measurement provides the first data to explore the [Formula: see text] evolution of the spin-dependent fragmentation function. This work is performed based on about 62[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] data collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII at [Formula: see text]=3.65[Formula: see text]GeV.

Resumo:

We consider the definition of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions while staying on-the-light-cone. By imposing a requirement of identical treatment of two collinear sectors, our approach, compatible with a generic factorization theorem with the soft function included, is valid for all non-ultra-violet regulators (as it should), an issue which causes much confusion in the whole field. We explain how large logarithms can be resummed in a way which can be considered as an alternative to the use of Collins-Soper evolution equation. The evolution properties are also discussed and the gauge-invariance, in both classes of gauges, regular and singular, is emphasized.

Resumo:

1. Rabbits were anaesthetized and kidneys removed directly with no flush (group NF), or alternatively kidneys were flushed (group F) with sodium phosphate buffered 140 mmol/1 sucrose (PBsuc 140), Collins C2 (C2) or Euro-Collins (EC) transplant preservation solutions and stored at 4°C for 0–4, 24 or 48 h. Mid-cortical proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) segments were dissected from all groups and set up for microperfusion in vitro. Observations were made of tubule morphology, fluid reabsorption rate (Jv), bath leak of the glomerular marker iothalamate and transmural potential difference (p.d.), both at 37°C and at 15–20°C, in order to compare the relative effectiveness of the solutions in the preservation of tubule integrity and immediate function. 2. Tubules from kidneys flushed with EC and C2 contained luminal debris and frequently had high bath leaks of iothalamate, both indicative of poor preservation of tubule integrity. In contrast, tubules from NF kidneys and PBsuc140-flushed kidneys were free of luminal debris with a lower incidence of high iothalamate leaks. 3. Tubules from PBsuc140-flushed and EC-flushed kidneys after 0–4 and 24 h storage had Jv that were similar to those of NF kidneys. Tubules from all groups of flushed kidneys after 48 h cold storage and all tubules from C2-flushed kidneys showed reduced Jv values. In all cases Jv was reduced to approximately zero when the temperature was lowered to 15–20°C. 4. Transmural p.d. was similar in all groups except for particularly low p.d. values observed in tubules from C2-flushed kidneys after 48 h storage. 5. These observations suggest that PBsuc140 is more effective in the preservation of tubule function during prolonged cold storage than the glucose-based Collins solutions. The marked difference in the effectiveness of C2 and EC contra-indicates the inclusion of magnesium (present in C2) for preservation of kidneys, as judged by experiments on the rabbit.

Resumo:

Investigation of evolution of X-ray properties of clusters of galaxies is a key study of cosmology. The most important result in this field before ROSAT and ASCA observatories is the detection of the negative evolution of the X-ray luminosity function at red-shift lower than 0.6 (Gioia et al., 1990). Following it, many groups have been investigating evolution of X-ray luminosity function from various surveys with ROSAT observatory (eg. Collins et al., 1997). Many of them indicate no negative evolution at the red-shift lower than 0.7, which is against the Einstein result.

AbstractIntroduction Treacher Collins syndrome, or mandibulofacial dysostosis, is a hereditary disorder and is manifested by craniofacial malformations. The incidence is close to one case per 40,000 live births, without relation to gender or race. The infant carrier may present neurological development. This rare syndrome requires documentation of its main clinical and kinetic-functional consequences.Objectives The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and kinetic-functional findings for a child who has Treacher Collins syndrome and receives treatment in the Physiotherapy Department at the Pestalozzi Association in Goiania, and to present the evolution of motor function and psychomotor development during rehabilitation.Materials and methods The information was obtained through interviews with the mother, and evaluation of the child at nine and eleven months old, using the infant neurological assessment sheet, Inventory Operational Portage (IPO) and Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM).Results The GMFM showed that the child had a higher trend in the items for lying and rolling, sitting, crawling and kneeling and minor changes in the items for standing, walking, running and jumping. In the IPO, the child progressed in all of the assessed areas: infant stimulation, motor development, socialization, self-care, cognition and language.Conclusion The child showed progress in psychomotor development in accordance with that expected for their age and initial assessment. It is suggested that children with this syndrome be treated by multidisciplinary teams in the first years of life, preventing delays and deviations in development.

Resumo:

We present the first measurement of the electron angular distribution parameter α2 in W → e ν events in proton-antiproton collisions as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. Our analysis is based on data collected using the DØ detector during the 1994–1995 Fermilab Tevatron run. We compare our results with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, which predicts an angular distribution of (1 ± α1 cos θ* + α2 cos 2 θ*), where θ* is the polar angle of the electron in the Collins-Soper frame and α1 and α2 are functions of [Formula: see text], the W boson transverse momentum. This measurement provides a test of next-to-leading order QCD corrections which are a non-negligible contrbution to the W boson mass measurement.

Resumo:

Starting from a definition of transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) in terms of hadronic matrix elements of a quark bilocal operator containing a staple-shaped gauge link, selected TMD observables can be evaluated within Lattice QCD. A TMD ratio describing the Boer-Mulders effect in the pion is investigated, with a particular emphasis on its evolution as a function of a Collins-Soper-type parameter which quantifies the proximity of the staple-shaped gauge links to the light cone.

This study aims to analyze plot structure in Collins’ The Hunger Games. There are several questions that researcher wants to find, what the elements of plot are, how do the elements of plot compose the plot structure of the story, and what kind of plot is applied in the novel. This study is a qualitative analysis by applying A.J. Greimas approach. The data were collected by reading, identifying, interpreting and analyzed using the approach and theories which used in this study by using actants. The result of this study were the elements of plot consist of beginning, problem of the story, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. To find out the main plot structure, this study classifies the function of each character into six actants, they are sender, receiver, subject, object, helper and opponent. Finally, the researcher concluded what kind of plot and how the ending of the novel is. The plot of the novel is dramatic or cronological plot because the story through in chronological order. The Collins dictionary has elected lockdown as its word-of-the-yearn 2020. Defined as “the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction and access to public spaces”, decided by governments “to mitigate the spread of COVID-19”, for Collins’ lexicographers “lockdown” took the top spot because it is a unifying experience for billions of people across the world, who have had, collectively, to play their part in combating the spread of the virus. Faced with the unknown of a brand-new virus, governments all over the world reacted in a rather familiar way, by suspending the normal flow of social life through the implementation of measures that are usually categorised as a state of exception. This article is a commentary that aims at placing the practice of lockdown (as a governmental administrative measure) in the context of the theory of state and government. To the extent that emergencies are always revelatory, this paper will argue that the state of exception – of which the lockdown is a sub-category – in displaying state’s sovereign power is exposing the radical impotence in which it is grounded, and from which it takes its ultimate meaning and function.

AbstractSerpins build a large and evolutionary widespread protein superfamily, hosting members that are mainly Ser-protease inhibitors. Typically, serpins display a conserved core domain composed of three main β-sheets and 9–10 α-helices, for a total of approximately 350 amino acids. Neuroserpin (NS) is mostly expressed in neurons and in the central and peripheral nervous systems, where it targets tissue-type plasminogen activator. NS activity is relevant for axogenesis, synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Five (single amino acid) NS mutations are associated with severe neurodegenerative disease in man, leading to early onset dementia, epilepsy and neuronal death. The functional aspects of NS protease inhibition are linked to the presence of a long exposed loop (reactive center loop, RCL) that acts as bait for the incoming partner protease. Large NS conformational changes, associated with the cleavage of the RCL, trap the protease in an acyl-enzyme complex. Contrary to other serpins, this complex has a half-life of approximately 10 min. Conformational flexibility is held to be at the bases of NS polymerization leading to Collins bodies intracellular deposition and neuronal damage in the pathological NS variants. Two main general mechanisms of serpin polymerization are currently discussed. Both models require the swapping of the RCL among neighboring serpin molecules. Specific differences in the size of swapped regions, as well as differences in the folding stage at which polymerization can occur, distinguish the two models. The results provided by recent crystallographic and biophysical studies allow rationalization of the functional and pathological roles played by NS based on the analysis of four three-dimensional structures.

We introduce convenient model and an optimization scheme to optimize the signal-to-crosstalk ratio (SCR) in a free space optical interconnects (FSOIs) system that uses microlenses with finite circular apertures. In this model, we consider both the stray light crosstalk and the crosstalk due to the diffraction at the microlens apertures to evaluate the SCR. Using cylindrical form of Collins diffraction integral and the Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beam model, we derive an approximate closed form formula for the optical field of a multimode LG beam propagating through circular apertured FSOIs by expanding the hard edge circular aperture function of the microlens in terms of complex Gaussian functions. The analyses indicate that the size of the detector is an important factor to optimize the SCR for both the apertured and the unapertured misaligned FSOIs system. The effect of higher order mode of the laser source on the SCR is also considered.

Resumo:

We first deal with the muon anomalous magnetic moment which is found to differ from the standard model prediction by 2.7 σ. A new proposal will aim at reducing the error by a factor 2. The main part of the paper then deals with the spin structure of the nucleon which can be studied in terms of quark and gluon helicity distributions, quark transversity distributions and generalized parton distributions. The main recent results are first indications that the total gluon spin in the nucleon might be small and a first measurement of the Collins fragmentation function which is needed to extract transversity distributions from semi-inclusive DIS data.

The nucleoli are membrane-less nuclear substructures that govern ribosome biogenesis and participate in multiple other cellular processes such as cell cycle progression, stress sensing, and DNA damage response. The proper functioning of these organelles is ensured by specific proteins that maintain nucleolar structure and mediate key nucleolar activities. Among all nucleolar proteins, treacle encoded by TCOF1 gene emerges as one of the most crucial regulators of cellular processes. TCOF1 was initially discovered as a gene involved in the Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by severe craniofacial deformations. Later studies revealed that treacle regulates ribosome biogenesis, mitosis, proliferation, DNA damage response, and apoptosis. Importantly, several reports indicate that treacle is also involved in cancer development, progression, and response to therapies, and may contribute to other pathologies such as Hirschsprung disease. In this manuscript, we comprehensively review the structure, function, and the regulation of TCOF1/treacle in physiological and pathological processes.

<p>We introduce convenient model and an optimization scheme to optimize the signal-to-crosstalk ratio (SCR) in a free space optical interconnects (FSOIs) system that uses microlenses with finite circular apertures. In this model, we consider both the stray light crosstalk and the crosstalk due to the diffraction at the microlens apertures to evaluate the SCR. Using cylindrical form of Collins diffraction integral and the Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beam model, we derive an approximate closed form formula for the optical field of a multimode LG beam propagating through circular apertured FSOIs by expanding the hard edge circular aperture function of the microlens in terms of complex Gaussian functions. Depue & Collins [D&C] propose a well-conceived and nicely detailed theory of the involvement of dopaminergic connections in extraversion. Since these systems are hypothesized to be associated with reward sensitivity, other neural systems that are involved with reward sensitivity should be considered as well. In this commentary it is argued that there is now enough evidence for the involvement of the left and right frontal regions of the brain in approach and withdrawal behavior that it should also be considered in theories of personality such as D&C's. Integration of predominantly subcortical and cortical theories of personality/brain function may produce a more comprehensive picture of temperament and personality.

A central role for nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) in the induction of lung inflammatory injury is emerging. We hypothesized that NF-κB is a critical early regulator of the inflammatory response in lung ischemia-reperfusion injury, and inhibition of NF-κB activation reduces this injury and improves pulmonary graft function. With use of a porcine transplantation model, left lungs were harvested and stored in cold Euro-Collins preservation solution for 6 h before transplantation. Activation of NF-κB occurred 30 min and 1 h after transplant and declined to near baseline levels after 4 h. Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), a potent inhibitor of NF-κB, given to the lung graft during organ preservation (40 mmol/l) effectively inhibited NF-κB activation and significantly improved lung function. Compared with control lungs 4 h after transplant, PDTC-treated lungs displayed significantly higher oxygenation, lower Pco2, reduced mean pulmonary arterial pressure, and reduced edema and cellular infiltration. These results demonstrate that NF-κB is rapidly activated and is associated with poor pulmonary graft function in transplant reperfusion injury, and targeting of NF-κB may be a promising therapy to reduce this injury and improve lung function.

Resumo:

Stereotypes are commonly alleged to be false or inaccurate views of groups. For shorthand, I call this the falsity hypothesis. The falsity hypothesis is widespread and is often one of the first reasons people cite when they explain why we shouldn’t use stereotypic views in cognition, reasoning, or speech. In this essay, I argue against the falsity hypothesis on both empirical and ameliorative grounds. In its place, I sketch a more promising view of stereotypes—which avoids the falsity hypothesis—that joins my earlier work on stereotypes in individual psychology (2015) with the work of Patricia Hill Collins on cultural stereotypes (2000). According to this two-part hybrid theory, stereotypes are controlling images or ideas that enjoy both a psychological and cultural existence, which serve a regulative social function.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: The objective of the study was 2-fold; to identify potentially deleterious alleles in a child with Treacher Collins syndrome, and; to demonstrate the value of the iobio analysis platform for intuitively and rapidly analyzing genomic data. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We used the iobio suite of web-based applications to analyze quality metrics for the sequencing data and called variants for the proband and his parents. We then visually interrogated variants in genes potentially associated with the syndrome in real-time, using the intuitive gene.iobio application. We sought high impact variants that demonstrated a predicted impact on the protein function, and were simultaneously at low allele frequency in the general human population. Variants were also compared against the ClinVar database of known mutations to identify variants that have already been associated with this, or related syndromes in the literature or clinical studies. Finally, the gene.iobio tool allows users to interrogate the primary sequencing data to ensure that no variants had been missed by the primary variant calling pipeline. This analysis pipeline was performed using intuitive web-based apps in real time, and consequently represents a system that is available to users that traditionally are excluded from these analyses. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: The iobio suite was used to rapidly assess data quality and interrogate genetic variants for a child with Treacher Collins syndrome. A compound heterozygote consisting of 2 missense alleles in the TCOF1 gene was identified as a compelling pathogenic allele, necessitating further functional investigation. The study helped validate the use of the intuitive iobio tools in such analyses, strengthening the case for greater involvement of medical professionals in data analysis. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: The performed analyses demonstrated that the whole genome sequencing data for the family being studied was of a very high quality, although 1 gene demonstrated a local region of almost zero coverage. This ensured that study conclusions can be presented with confidence. A variant associated with Treacher Collins syndrome 1 in ClinVar was uncovered in the TCOF1 gene, however, given it’s benign rating, this variant was not considered further. The most interesting candidate was a compound heterozygote, consisting of 2 missense mutations, also in the TCOF1 gene. These mutations occurred with allele frequencies of 22% and 8% in the general population, and additional molecular and functional studies are currently being pursued.

In this paper, we present relationships between the intrinsic radial distribution function (RDF) for a three-dimensional, isotropic system of particles and the lower-dimensional RDFs obtained experimentally from either two-dimensional or one-dimensional sampling of the data. The lower-dimensional RDFs are shown to be equivalent to integrals of the three-dimensional function, and as such contain less information than their three-dimensional counterpart. An important consequence is that the lower-dimensional RDFs are attenuated at separation distances below the characteristic length scale of the measurement. In addition, the inverse problem (calculating the three-dimensional RDF from the lower-dimensional measurements) is not well posed. However, recent results from direct numerical simulations (Reade & Collins 2000) showed that the three-dimensional RDF for aerosol particles in a turbulent flow field obeys a power-law dependence on r for r [Lt ] η, where η is the Kolmogorov scale of the turbulence. In this case, the inverse problem is well posed and it is possible to obtain the prefactor and exponent of the power law from one- or two-dimensional measurements. A procedure for inverting the data is given. All of the relationships derived in this paper have been validated by data derived from direct numerical simulations.

AbstractClustering (or preferential concentration) of weakly inertial particles suspended in a homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow is driven primarily by the smallest eddies at the so-called Kolmogorov scale. In particle-laden large-eddy simulations (LES), these small scales are not resolved by the grid and hence their effect on both the resolved flow scales and the particle motion have to be modelled. In order to predict clustering in a particle-laden LES, it is crucial that the subgrid model for the particles captures the mechanism by which the subgrid scales affect the particle motion (Ray & Collins, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 680, 2011, pp. 488–510). In this paper, we describe novel satellite particle simulations (SPS), in which we study the clustering and relative velocity statistics of inertial particles at separation distances well below the Kolmogorov length scale. SPS is designed to isolate pairwise interactions of particles, and is therefore well suited for developing two-particle models. We show that the power-law dependence of the radial distribution function (RDF), a statistical measure of clustering, is predicted by the SPS in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations (DNS) for Stokes numbers up to 3, implying that no explicit information from the inertial range is required to accurately describe particle clustering. This result further explains our successful prediction of the RDF power using the drift-diffusion model of Chun et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 536, 2005, pp. 219–251) for $\mathit{St}\leq 0. 4$. We also consider the second-order longitudinal relative velocity structure function for the particles; we show that the SPS is able to capture its power-law exponent for $\mathit{St}\leq 0. 5$ and attribute the disagreement at larger $\mathit{St}$ to the effect of the larger scales of motion not captured by the SPS. Further, the SPS is able to capture the ‘caustic activation’ of the structure function at zero separation and predict the critical $\mathit{St}$ and rate of activation in agreement with the DNS (Salazar & Collins, J. Fluid. Mech., vol. 696, 2012, pp. 45–66). We show comparisons between filtered DNS and equivalently filtered SPS, and the findings are similar to the unfiltered case. Overall, SPS is an efficient and accurate computational tool for investigating particle pair dynamics at small separations, as well as an interesting platform for developing LES subgrid models designed to accurately reproduce particle clustering.

We present the measurements of [Formula: see text] production at mid-rapidity via the di-muon decay channel in p+p and p+Au collisions at [Formula: see text] = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. In p+p collisions, the measured inclusive [Formula: see text] cross section can be qualitatively described by model calculations. The [Formula: see text] polarization parameters, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] as well as the frame-invariant quantity [Formula: see text], are presented as a function of transverse momentum in both the helicity and Collins-Soper frames. No significant polarization is observed. In addition, the nuclear modification factor for inclusive J/[Formula: see text] in p+Au collisions is similar to that measured in d+Au collisions and favors an additional nuclear absorption effect on top of the nuclear PDF effect.

The article reveals the peculiarities of the functioning of lexical repetition in artistic discourse (on the example of Suzanne Collins’ novel “Hunger Games”) and their reproduction by means of the native language in the Ukrainian translation of Ulyana Hryhorash. Taking into account that the main stylistic function of lexical repetition is the function of increasing the emotional and aesthetic impact on the reader, it was confirmed that the strength of such influence is explained not only by the lexical content of the repeated lexical units, but also by the close or distant location of one or another lexical unit in a given context . As a result of the research, some functions of lexical repetition in literary discourse were highlighted, namely: the function of connecting text elements (cohesion); the function of increasing expressiveness (emphasis); intensity growth function; sequence of information transmission; expression of multiplicity or duration of action; selection of a non-repeating element; adding clarity to the text due to the excessive use of a repeated word or phrase (tautology); to create a rhythm; stylistic presentation of conversational emotional speech; adding emotional color. Anaphora and epiphora were used mostly to create various visual representations, to give a certain rhythm, to create a certain emotional effect and to give an emotional color to the statement. Cases of anadiplosis, frame structure, polysyndeton as bright syntactic and stylistic markers are not so numerous compared to anaphora and epiphora, but they perform a kind of compositional and pictorial function that allows the reader to more fully enjoy the emotions that arise. Lexical repetition in the original language and its Ukrainian translation have one common goal – to achieve unity and coherence of the text. Being an effective means of influencing the reader and his consciousness, lexical repetitions help to empathize, stay in tension, feel sad, rejoice, encourage reflection and reasoning, therefore they are an integral part of the original text, which the Ukrainian translator masterfully tried to preserve and convey through the means of the native language.

Abstract. Ischemia/reperfusion injury leads to delayed graft function, which is a major problem in kidney transplantation. This study investigated the effects of adding trimetazidine (TMZ) to the perfusate of cold-stored kidneys on the function of reperfused autotransplanted pig kidney. The left kidney was removed and cold-flushed with Euro-Collins (EC), or University of Wisconsin (UW) solutions with or without 10-6M TMZ and stored for 48 h at 4°C. The kidneys were then autotransplanted and the contralateral kidneys were removed. Several parameters were analyzed over the 14 d after transplantation. The survival rate was 57% in pigs transplanted with kidneys cold-flushed with UW and 43% for those flushed with EC solution; it was 100% for pigs having kidneys cold-flushed with TMZ-supplemented UW and EC solutions. The functions of the transplanted kidneys were also better preserved after cold flush with TMZ-supplemented solutions than with TMZ-free solutions. Creatinine clearance was higher and the urinary excretion of trimethylamine-N-oxide and dimethylamine, used as markers of renal medulla injury, were lower in animals transplanted with kidneys cold-flushed with TMZ-supplemented solutions than with TMZ-free solutions. The cytoprotective action of TMZ also reduced interstitial and peritubular inflammation and the numbers of infiltrating mononuclear CD45+ and CD3+ T cells. These results indicate that the tissue damage due to ischemia/reperfusion injury may be prevented, at least in part, by adding TMZ to preservation solutions.

1. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential of various preservation solutions, originally designed for solid organs, to protect muscle function during cold storage. 2. The soleus (SOL) and the cutaneous trunci (CT) muscle from the rat were isolated and stored for 2, 4 or 8 h at 10°C. The solutions used, listed in order from an intracellular to an extracellular-like composition, were: University of Wisconsin (UW), Euro-Collins (EC), HTK-Bretschneider (HTK), reversed St. Thomas' Hospital (ST2) and Krebs-Henseleit (KH). After cold storage, the muscles were tested by direct electrical stimulation to obtain the maximum twitch tension (Pt) and the maximum tetanus tension (P0). Subsequently, the muscles were prepared for morphological analysis. 3. In general, storage at 10°C caused a gradual decrease of Pt and P0 with time. After 8 h of storage in the extracellular-like solutions KH and ST2, the P0 was about 50% (SOL) and 35% (CT) of control. Eight hours of storage in intracellular-like solutions resulted in a P0 of 50% of control for HTK, in a P0 of 40% (SOL) and 67% (CT) for UW, but in a P0 of 5% (SOL) and 26% (CT) for EC. These findings corresponded well with the morphological observations. 4. It is concluded that the effects of 10°C storage on skeletal muscle function are not predominantly determined by the intra- or extracellular-like composition of the solutions used. Both UW and HTK were most effective (P0 > 50% of control) in preserving muscle function.

Abstract Ribosomopathies compose a collection of disorders in which genetic abnormalities cause impaired ribosome biogenesis and function, resulting in specific clinical phenotypes. Congenital mutations in RPS19 and other genes encoding ribosomal proteins cause Diamond-Blackfan anemia, a disorder characterized by hypoplastic, macrocytic anemia. Mutations in other genes required for normal ribosome biogenesis have been implicated in other rare congenital syndromes, Schwachman-Diamond syndrome, dyskeratosis congenita, cartilage hair hypoplasia, and Treacher Collins syndrome. In addition, the 5q− syndrome, a subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome, is caused by a somatically acquired deletion of chromosome 5q, which leads to haploinsufficiency of the ribosomal protein RPS14 and an erythroid phenotype highly similar to Diamond-Blackfan anemia. Acquired abnormalities in ribosome function have been implicated more broadly in human malignancies. The p53 pathway provides a surveillance mechanism for protein translation as well as genome integrity and is activated by defects in ribosome biogenesis; this pathway appears to be a critical mediator of many of the clinical features of ribosomopathies. Elucidation of the mechanisms whereby selective abnormalities in ribosome biogenesis cause specific clinical syndromes will hopefully lead to novel therapeutic strategies for these diseases.

ABSTRACT Shaw addresses the argument and form of Ghosts with his 1908 play, Getting Married. With the creation of a new “disquisitory” form, Shaw provides an analogue to Ibsen’s Ghosts. In Getting Married, Shaw dramatizes one long discussion on the status of marriage and the necessity for liberalizing divorce laws. Central in the loose narrative are three distinct “New Women,” repudiating their duty to Victorian idealism and providing a snapshot of the myriad outcomes for women facing the same problem as Ghosts’s Mrs. Alving. In its dramaturgical construction and underlying theme, Getting Married can be seen as response to the Alving’s terrible marriage in Ibsen’s Ghosts. Lesbia Grantham, Mrs. George Collins, and Edith Bridgenorth function as the potential future iterations of Helene Alving. Standard value function approaches to finding policies for Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) are generally considered to be intractable for large models. The intractability of these algorithms is to a large extent a consequence of computing an exact, optimal policy over the entire belief space. However, in real-world POMDP problems, computing the optimal policy for the full belief space is often unnecessary for good control even for problems with complicated policy classes. The beliefs experienced by the controller often lie near a structured, low-dimensional subspace embedded in the high-dimensional belief space. Finding a good approximation to the optimal value function for only this subspace can be much easier than computing the full value function. We introduce a new method for solving large-scale POMDPs by reducing the dimensionality of the belief space. We use Exponential family Principal Components Analysis (Collins, Dasgupta & Schapire, 2002) to represent sparse, high-dimensional belief spaces using small sets of learned features of the belief state. We then plan only in terms of the low-dimensional belief features. By planning in this low-dimensional space, we can find policies for POMDP models that are orders of magnitude larger than models that can be handled by conventional techniques. We demonstrate the use of this algorithm on a synthetic problem and on mobile robot navigation tasks.

Although there is a growing body of research on inferential sentences (Declerck 1992, Delahunty 1990, 1995, 2001, Koops 2007, Pusch 2006), most of this research has been on their forms and functions in written discourse. This has left a gap with regards to their range of structural properties and allowed disagreement over their analysis to linger without a conclusive resolution. Most accounts regard the inferential as a type of it-cleft (Declerck 1992, Delahunty 2001, Huddleston and Pullum 2002, Lambrecht 2001), while a few view it as an instance of extraposition (Collins 1991, Schmid 2009). More recently, Pusch’s work in Romance languages proposes the inferential is used as a discourse marker (2006, forthcoming). Based on a corpus study of examples from spoken New Zealand English, the current paper provides a detailed analysis of the formal and discoursal properties of several sub-types of inferentials (positive, negative, as if and like inferentials). We show that despite their apparent formal differences from the prototypical cleft, inferentials are nevertheless best analysed as a type of cleft, though this requires a minor reinterpretation of “cleft construction.” We show how similar the contextualized interpretations of clefts and inferentials are and how these are a function of their lexis and syntax.

The present study examined attachment scores of adult children whose mothers were employed and how maternal employment varied as a function of children's personality styles. Children's extraversion was expected to moderate the effects of maternal employment on their attachment as adults. Responses of 106 undergraduates were obtained on 3 measures, the Eysenck Personality Inventory, the Adult Attachment Scale of Collins and Read, and the Adolescent Relationship Scales Questionnaire of Scharfe and Bartholomew. A median split was performed to divide subjects into those scoring High and Low on Extraversion. Subjects were then grouped on the basis of their mothers' employment status during the subjects' infancy (Full-time, Part-time, Nonemployed). Subjects high on Extraversion seemed to show more adverse attachment consequences in adulthood following full-time maternal employment during infancy. Adults who scored high on extraversion may have been more comfortable with continual maternal presence during infancy, while those more introverted as adults may have adapted better to the periods of separation associated with infant day care.
