Initial investigation by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the late 1980s on the use of LEDs to grow plant in space is resulting in an industry-wide transition from gas discharge to solid-state lighting systems. Sandwich construction is widely used in both the aerospace and commercial industries because it is an extremely lightweight structural approach with high rigidity and strength/weight ratios. AbstractThis chapter presents a summary of the description and preliminary results of the use case related to the implementation of artificial intelligence tools in the emerging technology called wireless avionics intra-communications (WAICs). WAICs aims to replace some of the cable buses of modern aircraft. This replacement of infrastructure leads to: (1) complexity reduction of future airplanes, (2) creation of innovative services where wireless links are more flexible than wireline links, and mainly (3) a considerable weight reduction, which in turn leads to fuel consumption efficiency, increase of payload, as well as range extension. Therefore, WAICs is expected to have a large impact on the aeronautics industry, propelling a new generation of greener, more efficient, and less expensive aeronautical services. However, there are still several reliability, trust, interoperability and latency issues that need to be addressed before this technology becomes commercial. It is expected that AI will boost the applicability of this technology, contributing to the realization of the concept of “fly-by-wireless”.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being used for commercial, scientific, agricultural and infrastructural enhancement to alleviate maladies. The objective of this chapter is to review existing capabilities and ongoing studies to overcome difficulties associated with the deployment of the agricultural unmanned aerial vehicle in obstacle-rich farms for pesticides and fertilizer application. By review of various literature, it is apparent that the potential for real-time and near real-time exists but the development of technology for quality imagery and rapid processing leading to real-time response is needed. The Infrared, time of flight and millimeter wavelength radar sensors for detecting farm and flight environment obstacles appear promising. The autonomous mental development algorithm, and the simultaneous localization and mapping technology are, however, ahead of others in achieving autonomous identification of obstacles and real-time obstacle avoidance. They are, therefore, found fit for further studies and development for deployment on agricultural unmanned aerial vehicles for obstacle-rich farms.

Modularization of hybrid-electric propulsion for commercial aircraft is becoming a reality in air transportation. The main intent of an electric architecture is to produce less carbon emissions and advance towards sustainability in the aeronautics industry. Due to regulatory and customer requirements for new technologies aimed at climate change and pollution, the integration of hybrid electric engine design become more challenging. Conceptual modular and integral product architectures are being compared with conventional and new constructions. A Design Structure Matrix (DSM) model is developed to analyze configuration of sub-component and their relationships through interaction between system elements. The DSM model includes product decomposition and cyclic task interdependencies to understand the extent of modularity in the product life cycle. The traditional turbofan engine architecture will be compared with hybrid electric propulsion engine architecture. The analysis indicates that the electric engine configuration constitutes a shift to a more distributed and less modular architecture. The DSM model reported a 19% increase in density of connectivity between components and 58% decrease in terms of structural complexity. The significance of these changes demonstrates that the more distributed architecture of the fully electric engine architecture requires less effort in system integration than the geared traditional turbofan architecture.

As globalization increases, supply chains are becoming increasingly complex and vulnerable, making the management of their security an important part of corporate management. The need to adopt control and prevention measures that allow for guaranteeing security in international commercial operations is essential to prevent becoming a target of these threats. Some of these threats are terrorism, piracy and theft. Within the food industry, food terrorism has gained relevance due to the extreme consequences it may have on both public health and the market. Food terrorism refers to the intentional contamination of food in any link of the supply chain, which covers everything from production to consumption. This chapter deals with the problems of food terrorism and makes a proposal that allows to establish a management system to prevent intentional food contamination in the supply chain through managing risks and improving security in the supply chain on this aspect.

Abstract. Over the last decades, the rapid growth of the consumption of fossil fuel has generated an increased need for energy sustainability. The negative impact on the environment and now, as a global society, the dependence on fossil fuel have been questioned. For contrasting these adverse effects, NASA calls on the aeronautic industry to reduce aircraft fuel burn by 70% by 2025 in their N+3 concepts. Following high-profile government and industry studies, electric aircraft propulsion has emerged as an important research topic, this includes all-electric, hybrid electric, and turbo-electric

Abstract. Spacecraft fragmentation due to collisions with space debris is a major concern for space agencies and commercial entities, since the production of collisional fragments is one of the major sources of space debris. It is in fact believed that, in certain circumstances, the increase of fragmentation events could trigger collisional cascade that makes the future debris environmental not sustainable. Experimental studies have shown that the fragmentation process is highly complex and influenced by various factors, such as the material properties, the velocity and angle of the debris imp

Abstract. The work focuses on the study of the structural behavior of a composite floor beam in the cargo area of a commercial aircraft subjected to static and dynamic loads. Experimental tests have been performed in the laboratories of the Dept. of Industrial Engineering (UniNa) jointly with the development of numerical models suitable to correctly simulate the phenomenon through the LS-DYNA software. The definition of a robust numerical model allowed to evaluate the possibility of buckling triggering. The test article was equipped with potting supports on both ends of the tested beam, fillin

Abstract. The paper presents the main characteristics of the high flux solar simulator facility designed and developed at University of Padova as key enabling technology to evaluate the effectiveness of satellite hardware for missions to the inner planets of the Solar System. The designed solar simulator can reproduce the intensity and spectral distribution of the Sun's radiation up to 8 Solar constants (around 10000 Watt/m2) and the emitted flux can be directed to the viewport of a Thermal Vacuum Chamber in order to test the performance of space equipment under representative pressure and tem

Abstract. The multi-spectral data acquired with either satellite imagery, UAV or tethered and stratospheric balloons can be used to calculate vegetation indices directly related to the well-being of the crops providing a quantitative information about its health and growth. The vegetation indices are calculated combining measurements from different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically in the visible and near-infrared ranges. The aim of this work is to integrate the remote sensing data with in-situ collected measurements in order to validate remote observations for monitoring soybea
