In the last few years, the development of Multi-Core architectures was driven by the crescent advance in integration technology. In this scenario, when the number of cores increases, problems found on shared communication media, such as busses, can be addressed by using a network approach. This paper proposes the usage of communication capabilities of Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) to execute general purpose instructions. The main idea behind this approach is to allow networks-on-chip architectures to execute general purpose instructions inside each router architecture. This paper addresses the main architectural concerns involved on creating datapaths for routers as well as the programming model suggested to pack instructions on messages. Simulation results on two case studies illustrate the benefits of the proposed architecture when compared to an equivalent NoC-based MP-SoC.

The aim of the article is to investigate the architectural form self-representation processes in the spatial experience of culture. Theoretical and methodological prism of the research is the semiotic concept of architecture of W. Eco and the concept of E. Panofsky correlating with it and explaining the nature of the Gothic architectural form evolution. The architectural reality self-definition problem in the context of the historical development of cultural and anthropological experience spatial codes is considered. On the basis of W. Eco’s semiotic concept of architecture we propose the vision of architectural object as a form in which the signifier - the “grammar” of architectural text - is treated as a signifier in the unity of meanings, functions and structures of the work. Architectural form in this capacity is described as a subject of socio-cultural communication, an individual link in the spatial code mediation chain of this or that tradition. On the basis of the comparative analysis, we have demonstrated the similarity of semiotic approach to the essence of architecture and Gothic architectural thinking of E. Panofsky. It shows the relevance of this methodology for modern architecture theory allowing to reveal the processes of architectural reality affirmation. The significance of the results for the theory of architecture consists in the fact that the heuristic significance of Eco’s semiotic conception of architecture was substantiated by E. Panofsky’s conclusions concerning the essence of Gothic form-building. The notion of architectural form as a subject of cultural communication greatly extends the architectural reality affirmative nature notion.

Apart from a brief overview of architectural communication viewed from the standpoint of theory of information and semiotics, this paper contains two forms of dualistically viewed architectural communication. The duality denotation/connotation (?primary? and ?secondary? architectural communication) is one of semiotic postulates taken from Umberto Eco who viewed architectural communication as a semiotic phenomenon. In addition, architectural communication can be viewed as an intra and an extra activity of architecture where the overall activity of the edifice performed through its spatial manifestation may be understood as an act of communication. In that respect, the activity may be perceived as the ?behavior of architecture?, which corresponds to Lefebvre?s production of space.

Recently, appliance networks have been widely adopted in many home applications. Usually, an appliance network requires a server. However, as the number of network users increases, there is not only the problem of costs due to extension of the server and the increase in power consumption, but also the problem that the functions of appliances are restricted when the connection to a server is unavailable. This paper presents a hybrid appliance local network (HALN) communication architecture to tackle the problems with server-based appliance networks. The HALN architecture is designed to remove and/or minimize the utilization of servers by offering the capability of communicating directly with other appliance products. The proposed architecture can also be integrated with existing server-based communication architectures. The HALN architecture is based on the simple service discovery protocol (SSDP) and HTTP protocol (RESTful HTTP server/client architecture) technologies. The effectiveness of HALN is experimentally demonstrated using a smartphone and a set of Linux-based Wi-Fi modems on which the functions that can be provided by typical appliances are implemented. Using the proposed architecture, the communication reliability is also improved by 1.6% as compared with that of an existing server-based communication architecture.

The standardisation of 5G is reaching its end, and the networks have started being deployed. Thus, 6G architecture is under study and design, to define the characteristics and the guidelines for its standardisation. In parallel, communications based on quantum-mechanical principles, named quantum communications, are under design and standardisation, leading to the so-called quantum internet. Nevertheless, these research and standardisation efforts are proceeding in parallel, without any significant interaction. Thus, it is essential to discuss an architecture and the possible protocol stack for classical-quantum communication networks, allowing for an effective integration between quantum and classical networks. The main scope of this paper is to provide a joint architecture for quantum-classical communication networks, considering the very recent advancements in the architectural design of 6G and the quantum internet, also defining guidelines and characteristics, which can be helpful for the ongoing standardisation efforts. For this purpose, the article discusses some of the existing main standardisation processes in classical communications and proposed protocol stacks for quantum communications. This aims at highlighting the potential points of connection and the differences that may imply future incompatible developments. The standardisation efforts on the quantum internet cannot overlook the experience gained and the existing standardisation, allowing the creation of frameworks in the classical communication context.

The world knows a constant development of technology applied in different sectors of activities: health, factories, homes, transportation, and others, one of the big axes that take a lot of attention today is the drone’s field. To communicate information a fleet of drones can use different communication architectures: centralized communication architecture, satellite communication architecture, cellular network communication architecture and a specific AdHoc communication architecture called the UAANET drones architecture. In our work we focused specifically on the routing of information inside the UAANET where we analyze and compare the performances of the reactive protocol AODV and the proactive protocol OLSR, when the UAANET use an applications based on the HTTP protocol, the FTP protocol, the database queries, voice application, and video conferencing application.

Abstract. The traditional autonomous vehicle (AV) architecture places a heavy burden on graphics processing units of the vehicle due to heavy signal processing requirements. Ultimately this results in performance degradation in AVs. This is mainly due to advanced sensors, which enable the vision for AVs, like Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), radars and cameras. In most of the AV models accepted by many leading automobile companies, LiDAR plays a significant role. It generates a high definition (HD) point cloud of the surroundings to obtain a precise map. AV makes decisions based on that by processing Terabyte (Tb) scale data within the AV. Still, vehicle-mounted LiDARs are not capable of providing information beyond a human driver’s vision. To provide a solution for the above-mentioned drawbacks of the traditional AVs, we propose an infrastructure based communication architecture to facilitate autonomous driving and communications. A set of coordinated LiDAR modules with integrated transceivers, which are mounted at an elevation with a bird’s eye view, can provide a much larger field of vision (FoV). Decisions are taken from a centralized body. We prove the technical feasibility of the system from sensing and communication point of view. The proposed architecture can play a supportive role with traditional AV architectures and it can be applied to many cases such as to automate harbours and factory floors. In the second part of the thesis, we address a resource allocation problem with ultra-reliable and low latency communication (URLLC) for a factory floor. We have analytically proven the capability of the proposed system to establish a reliable (packet error probability less than 10^(-5)) and low latency (less than 1 ms transmission delay) links with sufficient throughput (kilobit scale) using a convex optimization problem. Latency, throughput and reliability variations are studied under the short packet transmission of the proposed system.

Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1986.<br>MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 291-296).<br>To interpret the meaning of the built environment which surrounds us today, we must confront a plurality of architectural movements, each with its own built-in value system, iconographic references and select languages. The notion of a modern or 'contemporary' mode of expression has been made obsolete. We are faced instead with parallel, competing schools of thought, often contradictory in intention and outcome. It is my hypothesis that it is possible to isolate an undercurrent in architectural theory and design, which I call "Technomorphosis", that explains the crucial aspects of our present condition. It is my belief that the basis for Technomorphosis, is not rooted in recent history, but rather, can be traced back to speculative, avant-garde and revolutionary movements emerging during the period of the Industrial Revolution and the years immediately following it. To uncover the nature and limits of this undercurrent, I have studied three parallel scales of environment in which this development is taking place: -- The building, as an object with a distinct meaning. -- Open Space, as the bridge between groups o{ buildings, -- and the means of clarifying their relationships. The City, as a complex entity which deals with the relationship of objects and spaces on a comprehensive scale. Essentially, these investigations have led me to three propositions, which become central to the idea of Technomorphosis. These can be summarized as follows: -- A new meaning and expression has emerged in contemporary architecture which no longer relies on the traditional static relationship between the understanding of an idea and its visual image. Instead, there is an evolving mode of expression which is essentially dynamic and fragmentary, it embodies an interactive relationship between viewer and object. -- This new current of architectural expression actually looks back to utopic ideas emerging in the l ate 19th and early 20th centuries, there exists a 'time-lag' between idea and its physical manifestation in the built environment. -- This particular current is on the leading edge of a fundamental metamorphosis now taking place in the nature of the built environment. It is based on the increasing impact and dominance of technology and the information revolution in which communication and content become the basis for form. It is my belief that these propositions reveal the essential forces behind the environmental metamorphosis taking place today, an "architectural technomorphosis".<br>by Imrana Inayatullah.<br>M.S.

Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 104-106).<br>The rapid transmutation of technology enables us to experience the world indirectly much of the time. As it becomes less possible to exist without new modes of technological communication -cellular phones, global positioning systems, portable computers, Youtube TM and Skype TM- our relationship to the world around us transforms into a series of impersonal contact-less transactions. These technologies simultaneously augment and conceal an already present void in communication, which prevents individuals from achieving mutual understanding. This void in communication originates from and is perpetuated by the complex and varied meaning of signs and symbols, with which we use to convey and interpret information. How can we, as individuals, negotiate these technologies, enabling them to fulfill their function of resolving this ever-present void in communication? Rather than persisting in futile attempts to circumnavigate this void in communication through these technologies, I propose a repurposing of these devices, enabling communication directly with the problem, the void. Addressing the void directly will facilitate successful communication. I argue for a new method, "Gommunication" or Void Communication as a means to achieve mutual understanding. I aim to demonstrate the need for the Gommunication method by first acknowledging and identifying this void. I will support the method based on primary examples of telecommunications experiments, which, although carried out for various different purposes, suggest that Communication is possible. I will provide evidence of my own experiments in Gemmunication proving that this method is capable of achieving its desired result. I will conclude with a discussion of potential future applications of Gemmunication.<br>by Amanda M. Moore.<br>S.M.

<p>For a long time radio devices have been constructed in hardware with a fixed functionality. This way of constructing radio devices is starting to change with the concept of Software Defined Radio (SDR) evolving. The SDR concept leads to more flexible and long lasting radio devices. In order to make the radio software more standardized and portable, the U.S. military has defined the Software Communication Architecture (SCA). Internal communication within the SCA is done by CORBA, which limit waveforms to be only distributed over CORBA-capable hardware. The U.S. military has defined the Modem Hardware Abstraction Layer(MHAL) to enable distribution over devices not supporting CORBA. This thesis presents an implementation of MHAL and an underlying transport mechanism based on Ethernet. The implementation is done for the OSSIE package. The implementation is evaluated both in terms of real-time and throughput performance. The results show that MHAL achieves good performance, in comparison to CORBA, and can greatly be used to distribute waveforms over both CORBA and non-CORBA capable devices.</p>

Probing the communication protocol stack in Linux PC-based clusters to investigate erratic TCP/IP performance has led to a new metric, data stream stall, which is analogous to instruction stream stall in CPUs. Data stream stalling correlates well with unexpected throughput performance dips; the dips are usually due to delayed ACKs or questionable handling of them. We illustrate the use of this data stream stall metric by isolating and correcting the cause of these communication throughput dips in our version of Linux (2.0.29). The availability of this data stream stall metric would provide useful feedback to users by indicating deficient communications performance.
