Resumo:

Compassionate Corrections, Detention or Corporal Punishment: A Model-Generating Study on Correctional Methods in Nineteenth Century Comprehensive School BylawsThis article aims to develop a systematising model to analyse correction and punishment in the nineteenth century elementary school in Sweden. The model is used to identify and compare the different forms of correction, to systematise mutual relationships between milder corrections and more harsh punishments, and to find patterns between faults and correction. The model is also used to systematically identify how expressions about correction and punishment change over time. The model is developed on the basis of normative material, which regulated how to maintain order in classrooms.

Resumo:

This paper seeks to analyze whether the treatment for inmates under the Revitalization of Correctional Implementation policy is in accordance with a human rights perspective. This research aims to provide information regarding the Correctional process and contribute to the study of Correctional Sciences. It is expected that readers to recognize the role of Corrections. The method used in this research is qualitative with normative and conceptual approaches. This study reveals that the treatment of inmates under the Revitalization of Correctional Implementation policy is in line with a human rights perspective. Revitalization of Correctional Implementation that emphasizes attitudes and behavioural change of inmates by arranging the placement test to optimize the process within the Correctional Institutions, is held with respect to human rights.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss five domains impacted by the transformation of correctional mental health care in the USA: public health, public safety, legal obligations, fiscal responsibility and ethical standards, as well as critical issues such as administrative segregation, suicide prevention and reentry planning. Design/methodology/approach – In the last four decades, the USA has seen a sizable growth in its criminal justice system and corrections population. It has also seen reductions in civil and community-based mental health care. Persons with mental disabilities have come to represent a highly disproportional segment of the corrections population. The paper discusses the implications and underlying causes of these developments as well as recent responses to them. Findings – This set of circumstances is starting to change the mission of correctional health services from crisis intervention and suicide prevention to include preparation for the inmate's almost inevitable return to the community. Originality/value – Such changes have led to further developments in correctional mental health care, in particular, policy designed to treat mental illness, reduce its destructive outcomes such as suicide, and facilitate successful reentry into the community in attempts to reduce recidivism and improve clinical outcomes. Mental health care professionals working within corrections have likewise faced ethical challenges in effectuating treatment.

The study uses Behavioral Tendencies Scales tests to examine how employment as a correctional officer affects personality change, particularly neuroticism. We found a significant and conclusive increase in the neuroticism factor among correctional officers and a significant decrease in the comparison groups, as well as higher levels of neuroticism among longer serving officers than among newly employed officers. A significant increase in neuroticism was also revealed among correctional officers after 3 to 4 years of employment. Our findings led us to conclude that employment in prison is linked to changes in correctional officers’ personalities and levels of neuroticism, unlike the trend seen in the comparison groups and in that age group in the wider population. This highlights the distinctive and stressful nature of correctional facilities as a workplace that generates particular, negative personality changes.

Resumo:

The paper deals with the problems of cognitive correction at high school. The authors propose a model of correctional work that helps to organize students individual independent work with the gradual and final result control. The authors identify specifics, goals and objectives of the proposed forms and methods of correctional work at the University from the point of the competence approach. As the main didactic means of this technology the authors propose to use e-learning resources that include components, providing: cognitive problems learning diagnosis, statistical analysis of errors and problems, formation of individual behavior change trajectory in accordance with the aims and objectives of corrections, a comprehensive study of the discipline, correction control results and systematic development of students competencies. The authors considered options for the use of the proposed technology on the example of Mathematics course at universities of Economics. The authors come to the conclusion that it is necessary to introduce it into the educational process of the University in various subject areas.

Resumo:

The main institution in Kosovo that deals with the execution of criminal sanctions and it is Kosovo Correctional Service (KCS). Since its establishment, this institution has undergone numerous changes in the organizational field, as well as changes created by legal regulation. The recent trends occurring in correctional services in democratic societies have transformed these services in order to have a human approach and, in several cases constitute a decisive factor in the change in the behaviour of delinquents. Delinquents that have been convicted for serious crimes by criminal proceedings of final judgment, in order to rehabilitate through based programs on contents of rehabilitation, resettlement, and reintegration used a various method which will be treated in this paper. Considering legal changes which have occurred, these changes have affected executive bodies in charge of the execution of criminal sanctions. In this paper were applied several methods, such as individual case study, normative analysis, and qualitative methods. From the results of the treatment, we can see that through the legal changes made in this area of Correction have special importance. The correctional system as organized by the Correctional Service has advanced regarding the terms of legislation, influenced by the European system implemented in some countries in this field.

Resumo:

The growth in US incarcerated populations has produced unintended negative consequences for other justice system agencies. The community corrections field is faced with two related problems stemming from prison growth: (1) significant growth in populations under supervision and (2) populations with higher needs for service. I apply a theoretical framework adapted from organizational sociological research to address change and stasis as isomorphic processes. Criminologists rarely situate the community corrections field within broader theoretical perspectives. Instead, correctional researchers have studied the emergence, adjustment, and use of prisons in modern society, with community supervision considered a part of institutional corrections. I argue that contemporary explanations for correction policies need to be refined to account for specific trends within the community corrections field.

Evidence-based practices (EBPs) hold tremendous potential for improving the outcomes of corrections interventions. The implementation of EBPs requires support from staff at all levels of an organization; however, the study of correctional staff attitudes toward organizational change and EBPs is in its infancy. The current study examines the psychometric properties of the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale (EBPAS), an instrument originally designed for mental health professionals, to measure correctional employees’ readiness to implement EBPs. The results indicate mixed conclusions regarding the use of the EBPAS with correctional staff. We found that the total scale and subscales are reliable and exhibit high internal consistency. However, the results of an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis failed to replicate the factor structure from previous research with mental health providers. The findings indicate potential drawbacks regarding the construct validity of the EBPAS for use with correctional personnel.

Purpose Offending behavior change programs play an important role in the prevention of criminal behavior, particularly when offered to violent offenders. There is, however, little consensus about how content should be delivered, despite agreement that the development of a strong therapeutic alliance (TA) is an important determinant of outcome. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the TA is formed within correctional programs. Design/methodology/approach In total, 27 therapists who delivered correctional group treatment explored issues relating to the role of the alliance in offending behavior programs. A grounded theory methodology was employed to develop a conceptual understanding of therapist perspectives and practises. Findings Three different modes of practice were identified: “educative” to enforce boundaries of group behavior; “engagement” to promote a collaborative approach; and “therapeutic” to enhance client insight. Practical implications Greater awareness of the skills and supports required to successfully develop strong TAs in correctional populations may assist better retention and treatment outcomes in offending behavior programs. The ability to work flexibly between different modes of practise may prove important to rehabilitation efforts. Originality/value A model of the TA based on therapists’ accounts of their practise in correctional programs is presented. It is anticipated that, particularly for novice correctional therapists, exploration of the ways in which the alliance can be established and ruptures responded to will enhance treatment efficacy, particularly in treating violent offenders who can be challenging to engage.

Group polarization is a phenomenon in which moderate attitudes or opinions espoused by a social group tend to become more extreme in the course of interactions and discussions within the group. Using a modified form of the group polarization paradigm, the present study examined the conditions under which group polarization or related phenomena may operate within correctional treatment or discussion groups to inadvertently foster the amplification of procriminal attitudes or beliefs. Inmates at a correctional treatment facility were assigned to small discussion groups on the basis of their pre-experimental scores on psychometric tests measuring either identification with the inmate code (High vs. Low Inmate Solidarity) or antisocial/prosocial personality traits (High vs. Low Criminality). Each group then engaged in brief discussions of (a) topics preselected to elicit or trigger categorizations along a prosocial-procriminal dimension ("prototypical" topics), and (b) neutral topics. Group-mediated attitudinal shifts were affected by both the type of group composition and by the discussion topic. Only homogeneous groups of High Inmate Solidarity subjects showed significant strengthening of procriminal attitudes and this was the case only for discussions of prototypical topics, not for neutral topics. All other group compositions tended to exhibit shifts toward the mid-point of the rating (i.e., more neutral or ambivalent post-discussion attitudes), regardless of the type of topic discussed. The results are interpreted as providing evidence for Self-Categorization Theory, which posits that group-mediated attitude change is a phenomenon of conformity to local ingroup norms--representing what group members perceive to be the group consensus--and factors influencing the salience of ingroup-outgroup categorizations or group identity. The clinical implications of these findings for correctional treatment groups and implications for future research are discussed.

Inclusive education is a pedagogic approach that has been developed in response to the demand for including children with disabilities in regular school education. The present work is devoted to the studying of the reforming characteristics of the Russian correctional school education and attempts have been made to include inclusive education in particular social context related to Russian secondary schools. This thesis presents a series of studies devoted to the issues of the correctional education reform and the development of inclusive education in St. Petersburg during the period 2012-2016. The first public demonstration against the reform of correctional education started in 2011 after the beginning of the neoliberal educational reforms of the government. Therefore, our first study in 2012 was devoted to the opinion poll of the St. Petersburg residents focused on the reform of correctional and inclusive education. In December, 2012, 396 structured interviews were carried out. They were repeated in March, 2014. It is interesting to note that the study showed a fairly high loyalty to inclusive education. Our second research devoted to stakeholders was conducted in 2014. The first stage was devoted to teachers of regular schools in order to understand the extent of their acquaintance and involvement in the process of implementing inclusive education. 196 questionnaires of respondents - teachers at regular school in 2012 and 343 in 2014 were achieved. The second stage was devoted to the opinion of students of teacher education. We have 276 questionnaires of student-future teachers in 2012 and 269 in 2015. The research revealed quite contradictory assessments and judgments. The results showed that the concept of inclusive education gradually integrates into the life of modern Russia but also requires efforts to fully implement it in the educational process.
La educación inclusiva es un enfoque pedagógico que se ha desarrollado en respuesta a la demanda de incluir alumnado con discapacidades en el sistema educativo ordinario. El presente trabajo está dedicado al estudio de las características de la reforma de la educación escolar especial en Rusia, planteando los avances desarrollados en relación a la educación inclusiva. Esta tesis presenta varios estudios dedicados a la reforma de la educación especial (Correctional Education) y el desarrollo de la educación inclusiva en San Petersburgo durante el período 2012-2016. La primera manifestación pública contra la reforma de la educación especial comenzó en 2011, después del inicio de las reformas educativas neoliberales del gobierno. Por esta razón, nuestro primer estudio en 2012 estuvo dedicado a la encuesta de opinión de los residentes de San Petersburgo centrada en la reforma de la educación correccional. En diciembre de 2012 se realizaron 396 entrevistas estructuradas. Se repitieron en marzo de 2014. Es interesante observar que el estudio mostró una adhesión considerablemente elevada a la educación inclusiva. Nuestra segunda investigación se llevó a cabo en 2014. La primera etapa se dedicó a los maestros de escuelas ordinarias para comprender el alcance de su conocimiento y participación en el proceso de implementación de la educación inclusiva. Se obtuvieron 196 cuestionarios procedentes de maestros en escuelas ordinarias en 2012 y 343 en 2014. La segunda etapa se dedicó a profundizar en la opinión de los alumnos de magisterio. Obtuvimos 276 cuestionarios de futuros maestros, actuales estudiantes en 2012 y 269 en 2015. La investigación reveló evaluaciones y juicios bastante contradictorios. Los resultados mostraron que el concepto de educación inclusiva se integra gradualmente en la vida de la Rusia moderna, pero también requiere esfuerzos para avanzar en su total implementación en el proceso educativo.

Resumo:

A simplistic view of a dataset is that it is collection of numbers. In fact data are much more than that and all data are collected at a set place and time. Often either the location, or the time, is fixed within the dataset and one or both are disregarded. When the place and time of the collection are incorporated into the analysis, the result is a spatio-temporal model. Spatio-temporal data are the focus of this thesis. The majority of the datasets used are radio tracking studies of animals where the objective is to measure the habitat use. Observations are made over a long period of time and a large area. The largest dataset analysed tracks over a hundred animals, in an area larger than 40 square miles, for multiple years. In this context understanding the spatio-temporal relationships between observations is essential. Even data that do not have an obvious spatial component can benefit from spatio-temporal analysis. For example, the data presented on volatility in the stock market do not have an obvious spatial component. The spatial component is the location in the market, not a physical location. Two different methods for measuring and correcting bias are presented. One method relies on direct modelling of the underlying process being observed. The underlying process is animal movement. A model for animal movement is constructed and used to estimate the missing observations that are thought to be the cause of the bias. The second method does not model the animal movement, but instead relies on a Bayesian Hierarchical Model with some simple assumptions. A long running estimation is used to calculate the most likely result without ever directly estimating the underlying equations. In the second section of the thesis two methods for measuring change from shifts in both spatial and temporal location are presented. The methods, Large Diffeomorphic Deformation Metric Mapping (LDDMM) and Diffeomorphic Demons (DD), were originally developed for anatomical data and are adapted here for nonparametric regression surfaces. These are the first applications of LDDMM and DD outside of computational anatomy.

The various parameters appearing along an engine’s gas path, such as flows, pressures, temperatures, speeds, etc., vary not only with power condition but also with the ambient conditions at the engine’s inlet. Since a change in inlet temperature and/or pressure will contribute to an attendant change in a gas path parameter’s value, it would be difficult to characterize the aero-thermodynamic relationships between gas turbine engine parameters, (even at a constant engine operating point) unless the ambient conditions are somehow accounted for. This is usually accomplished through the use of corrected engine parameters. Although most of these corrections are well known by practitioners in the industry, knowledge of their origin does not appear to be as commonplace. The purpose of this paper is to fill that gap and furnish a summary of the commonly used corrections for the “major” gas path parameters that are used in performance analysis, diagnostics and control design, and to offer a derivation of these corrections. We will suggest both an analytic approach as well as an empirical approach. The latter can be used to establish the correction for parameters not directly addressed in this paper, as well as to fine tune the correction factors when actual engine data is available.

Resumo:

The article analyses problems of defining reference states of the turbine power plants in cases of difficulties resulting from changes of operating conditions, including: changes in cycle configuration, repairs of only selected devices, and periodical replacements of measuring sensors in inter-repair time intervals. All above actions lead to time consuming corrections of the unified reference pattern. High time consumption of the correction can be reduced provided that a functional reference pattern with a modular structure is used. It was shown that in that case the effect of current operating conditions can be reconstructed when determining the reference state at relatively low time consumption for the reference pattern correction.

Many studies have investigated the chemical exergy of fuels. The results showed that it is equal to the negative standard free enthalpy change (SFEC) of the fuel combustion or the correction value. However, because the products of the combustion still have the chemical potentials of diffusion, the negative SFEC is not the whole of the chemical exergy of fuels. Because the accurate entropy of fuels cannot be obtained, the accuracy of the SFEC is doubtful and some corrections become necessary. But any correction risks misrepresenting the exergy balance of fuel-fired energy systems. In this paper, some important thermodynamic fundamental problems were studied, which showed that the chemical exergy of fuels should be equal to the negative standard enthalpy change. The formulas of total entropy generations and exergy efficiencies of energy utilizations were deduced, so that the exergy efficiency evaluation just needs heat balance data. The case studies were also given.

The publication of ASME Performance Test Code 6.2-2004 provided the industry with a Code document dedicated to calculating the performance of a steam turbine in a combined cycle power plant. Power output at specified steam flows and conditions was chosen as the Code’s primary performance parameter. That choice was based on the operating and cycle characteristics of a combined cycle plant operating, where the steam turbine is part of the bottoming cycle operating in a sliding pressure mode that follows ambient conditions and the gas turbine operating profile. This steam turbine generator output, corrected to reference heat consumption, is called Output Performance and is a measurement of steam turbine efficiency. Accompanying this new Code was a new correction methodology that focused on correcting the steam turbine generator output to the reference heat consumption of the cycle. In the development of the overall correction methodology, the corrections associated with high-pressure (HP) steam inlet conditions were given careful attention. The committee developing the Code and methodology concluded that three correction formulations were required to accurately and fairly correct back to the reference heat input of the high-pressure turbine inlet, and to account for changes in the as-built flow capacity versus the design flow capacity. The new correction formulations chosen were: • HP Steam Flow; • HP Steam Temperature; • HP Turbine Flow Capacity. Applying these three corrections on a sliding pressure steam turbine ensures that the output performance is corrected to the true reference high pressure steam heat input to the cycle. If any of these three corrections is excluded the calculated output performance will not be a true representation of the steam turbine efficiency.

In this paper, contact modeling technique and dynamics analysis of piston and cylinder system are presented by using modal synthesis method. It is very important to select mode shapes representing a global or local behavior of a flexible body due to a specified loading condition. This paper proposes a technique to generate the static correction modes which are nicely representing a motion by a contact force between a piston and cylinder. First normal modes of piston and cylinder under a boundary condition are computed, and then static correction modes due to a contact force applied at contacted nodes are added to the normal modes. Also, this paper proposes an efficient dynamics analysis process while changing the shape of the piston and cylinder. In optimization process or design study, their geometric data can be changed a bit. The slight changes of their contact surfaces make a high variation of the magnitude of a contact force, and it can yield the different dynamic behavior of an engine system. But, since the variations of the normal and correction modes are very small, the re-computation of their normal and correction modes due to the change of contact surfaces can be useless. Until now, whenever their contact surfaces are changed at a design cycle, the modes have been recomputed. Thus, most engineers in industries have been spent many times in very tedious and inefficient design process. In this paper, the normal and correction modes from the basic geometry of the piston and cylinder are computed. If the geometry shape is changed, nodal positions of the original modal model are newly calculated from an interpolation method and changed geometry data. And then the updated nodes are used to compute a precise contact force. The proposed methods illustrated in this investigation have good agreement with results of a nodal synthesis technique and proved that it is very efficient design method.

With the development of high speed rotating machinery, the flow regime in bearings changes from laminar to superlaminar, that is, the flow is between laminar and fully developed turbulent. The superlaminar oil flow in an oil–lubricated tilting–pad journal bearing is analyzed in this study. A three–dimensional model for the oil domain is established and the CFD results obtained using laminar and seventeen turbulence models are compared with the experimental results obtained by S.Taniguchi. The seventeen turbulence models are divided into three groups, namely, classical fully developed turbulence models, transition turbulence models, and turbulence models with low–Re correction. The laminar and classical turbulence models cannot simulate the superlaminar flow correctly; accordingly, corrections should be applied to classical fully developed turbulence models for superlaminar flows to consider the turbulent effect properly. However, not all corrections are suitable. Among all the compared turbulence models, the SST model with low–Re correction performs the best. Furthermore, this model can capture the turbulent effect in superlaminar oil flow, as indicated in the analysis of turbulent viscosity ratio. A comparison of the velocity profiles shows that the mechanism of the superlaminar flow in journal bearings is near–wall turbulence. The buffer layer plays an important role in superlaminar flows. The SST model with low–Re correction can likewise capture the characteristics of the buffer layer and simulate the near–wall turbulence properly in superlaminar flows. Thus in superlaminar journal bearings, the low–Re correction is the most suitable correction for the SST turbulence model for simulating oil flows.

Gas turbine thermal performance is dependent on many external conditions, including fuel gas composition. Variations in composition cause changes in output and heat consumption during operation. Measured performance must be corrected to specified reference conditions prior to comparison against performance specifications. The fuel composition is one such condition for which performance corrections are required. The methodology of fuel composition corrections can take various forms. One current method of correction commonly used is to characterize fuel composition effects as a function of heating value and hydrogen-to-carbon ratio. This method has been used in the past within a limited range of fuel composition variation around the expected composition, yielding relatively small correction factors on the order of +/− 0.1%. Industry trends suggest that gas turbines will continue to be exposed to broader ranges of gas constituents, and the corresponding performance effects will be much larger. For example, liquefied natural gas, synthesized low BTU fuel, and bio fuels are becoming more common, with associated performance effects of +/− 0.5% or greater. As a result of these trends, performance test results will bear a greater dependency on fuel composition corrections. Hence, a more comprehensive correction methodology is required to encompass a broader range of fuel constituents encountered. Combustion system behavior, specifically emissions and flame stability, is also influenced by variations in fuel gas composition. The power generation industry uses Wobbe Index as an indicator of fuel composition. Wobbe Index relates the heating value of the fuel to its density. High variations in Wobbe Index can cause operability issues including combustion dynamics and increased emissions. A new method for performance corrections using Wobbe Index as the correlating fuel parameter has been considered. Analytical studies have been completed with the aid of thermodynamic models to identify the extent to which the Wobbe Index can be used to correlate the response of the gas turbine performance parameters to fuel gas composition. Results of the study presented in this paper suggest that improved performance test accuracy can be achieved by using Wobbe Index as a performance correction parameter, instead of the aforementioned conventional fuel characteristics. Furthermore, a relationship between this method’s accuracy and CO2 content of fuel is established such that an additional correction yields results with even better accuracy. This proposed method remains compliant with intent of internationally accepted test codes such as ASME PTC-22, ASME PTC-46, and ISO 2314.

We will report on progress made in interrogating harsh environment sapphire optical sensors (1100°C) using the measurement of the temperature of the sensor itself to correct for cross sensitivity of the pressure signal to the temperature signal. Results will be presented showing real temperature and pressure data and the corrections obtained from an actual sensor. The constraints this puts on the optical source and the choice of cavity lengths to achieve satisfactory (low) crosstalk between the two parameters measured will be described. Previous work has concentrated on correcting a static pressure against a changing ambient temperature of the sensor body: there are several locations in a gas turbine where the temperature is undergoing significant changes over sub-second timescales. This leads to unexplained noise in the dynamic pressure signal also, but Oxsensis’ Multi Parameter Interrogation (MPI) technology allows for the temperature to be measured with the same speed of response as the pressure (up to 50kHz), and so affords the possibility of removing the error due to dynamic temperature effects. This data on temperature will in many applications, be useful in its own right, not just as a means of improving the sensor accuracy. Using this technology, there is room for further improvement to correct for the fact that the temperature change may take a time to propagate through the sensor body, limiting the effectiveness of the correction. Modelled data will be presented showing this speed in simulated environments and explore methods of optimising this, with changes to the sensor geometry. Finally, we will turn our attention to the accuracy of such a scheme. Crosstalk between the cavities has already been highlighted as one issue, and will explore limitations on accuracy including the ultimate resolution of such a system, and the root causes of this. In summary, performance data of a system to measure static and dynamic pressure with correction for temperature errors in a harsh environment, such as a gas turbine engine, in several important locations will be presented.

Obtaining reliable estimates of aerodynamic roughness is necessary to interpret and accurately predict aeolian sediment transport dynamics. However, inherent uncertainties in field measurements and models of surface aerodynamic properties continue to undermine aeolian research, monitoring, and dust modeling. A new relation between aerodynamic shelter and land surface shadow has been established at the wind tunnel scale, enabling the potential for estimates of wind erosion and dust emission to be obtained across scales from albedo data. Here, we compare estimates of wind friction velocity (u*) derived from traditional methods (wind speed profiles) with those derived from the albedo model at two separate scales using bare soil patch (via net radiometers) and landscape (via MODIS 500 m) datasets. Results show that profile-derived estimates of u* are highly variable in anisotropic surface roughness due to changes in wind direction and fetch. Wind speed profiles poorly estimate soil surface (bed) wind friction velocities necessary for aeolian sediment transport research and modeling. Albedo-based estimates of u* at both scales have small variability because the estimate is integrated over a defined, fixed area and resolves the partition of wind momentum be-tween roughness elements and the soil surface. We demonstrate that the wind tunnel-based calibration of albedo for predicting wind friction velocities at the soil surface (us*) is applicable across scales. The albedo-based approach enables consistent and reliable drag partition correction across scales for model and field estimates of us* necessary for wind erosion and dust emission modeling.
