During the design process of Unit type curtain wall, there are lots of problems which are worthy of exploring and need to be addressed. Through the International Plaza curtain wall engineering, the methodology of design is that forming a cross-section of steel and aluminum combination by inserting steel ferrule in to unit male frame and the female frame; meanwhile, by using a reasonable design to the shape and size, we can meet the requirement of the overall strength and stiffness of the unit mullion. Mechanical model, actual design of the project parameters and drawing conditions, which detail the design process and calculation results, are reasonable enough for curtain walls researchers and designers.

Abstract The paper proposes a numerical model to estimate the structural behaviour of a stickbuilt glazed curtain wall system subjected to an imposed displacement of the supports in the plane of the wall. We discuss the role of the parameters that influence on the maximum inter-storey drift corresponding to the service limit state of the wall. The considered parameters are the dimensions of the glazed panel, the gap between the panel and the aluminium frame and the gap between the supports and the mullions. We discuss the problem of remnant deformation of glazed panels, and of misalignment as serviceability criteria. Comparisons are made to laboratory testing results.

Curtain wall systems are considered as envelop of a building, generally made of a lightweight material such as aluminium. The curtain wall façade does not carry any weight from the building, rather it transfers loads that are incident upon it to the main building structure through connections with floors or columns. This paper addresses some key issues in satisfying the respective limit state design checks. Two mullion profiles 85mm and 125mm deep of three manufacturers are analysed showing that the different extrusions of mullion profiles does not have any drastic effect on its structural behavior. Due to the versatility and lightweight, aluminum has many advantages when used as a curtain wall framing material, but it has the distinct disadvantage of being three times more deformable than steel. Therefore, the fulfillment of serviceability limits is an important issue when designing the framing members, in order to avoid damage of connected glasses. Also, the importance of connections and steel insert are highlighted. Finally, some completed and in-progress ALUTEC projects with different curtain wall systems are presented. The paper is therefore interesting for the Façade Engineers involved in the design of curtain walls.

Curtain wall industry is the major user of aluminium as a structural material in buildings, with two basic curtain wall systems: stick and unitised. The latter is preassembled in shops, with the main feature that frame profiles are split in two interlocking halves. Such cross sections are complex, open and prone to lateral torsional buckling. General formulas for the calculation of elastic critical moment for lateral-torsional buckling are provided in the EN 1999-1-1, with a long and complicated procedure for non-symmetrical sections which makes it pretty impractical for everyday use. The problem of such sections can also be assessed by FEM modelling, which is a time consuming and complex process. Curtain wall industry is in a need of a swift, if approximate and conservative, method for checking the risk of lateral torsional buckling of profiles with non-symmetrical cross sections. Some available analytical methods are applied on a practical example and their results compared to those obtained using FEM modelling.

Glass facade/curtain wall assemblies are commonly used in modern building construction as part of building envelop. This system has a number of advantages, including pleasant architectural appearance, building energy optimization, acceptable fire resistance and low maintenance. However, they pose tremendous risk towards maliciously intended acts of terror in the form of bomb blasts. The literature review conducted revealed lack of previous research on mullion strengthening/hardening. The present study has the objective of developing hardening techniques for curtain wall mullions to withstand high-intensity impulsive blast loads. Combined experimental and analytical research was conducted for the development of mullion retrofit techniques using the Shock Tube Facility of the University of Ottawa. The test program involved retrofitting existing, commercially used aluminum mullions with steel plates and subjecting them to different levels of blast loads. The mullions were retrofitted with three techniques with the help of steel L shaped angles, steel plates and with a combination of steel HSS sections and plates. The results indicated an increase of load carrying capacity of the mullions up to a factor of 2.2 with up to 30% reduction in mid-height displacements. It was shown that the steel hardening components developed full composite action with the existing aluminum section, indicating the effectiveness of the hardening technology. The analytical research followed the experimental research with the main objective of validating experimental results, as well as validating the assumption of full composite action between the core aluminum mullion and the hardening plates. The first step was to develop resistance functions followed by the validation of main analytical tool RC-Blast and the UFC charted solution. Following excellent agreement between these two analytical tools, RC-Blast was further validated against the experimental results. In addition, Pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams were developed as design aids for different pressure-impulse combinations. The retrofit techniques developed were applied to a selected prototype building to assess their feasibility for use in practice. Two different blast threats were considered for this application. Conclusions were drawn regarding the effectiveness of the curtain wall hardening techniques for use in practice.

The thermal bridge problem in building fagades has become a topic of interest as the energy performance of building enclosure design required improvements with a global lead in sustainable building design. Curtain wall fagade systems are widely used for recent high-rise buildings, and the thermal bridge issue occurs mainly within the aluminum frame of the curtain wall system. In addition to the thermal bridging effects, the conventional curtain wall fagade designs have limitations in increasing the stiffness of the mullion. As to address the lack of an innovative solution to solve both issues, this thesis proposes utilizing a cellular structure in mullion design. In particular, this thesis has selected a single-gyroid structure, which is an open cell foam structure that has the minimum surface area necessary to span a region of space. The thesis explores various aspects of the application that extend from a rapid modeling method of gyroid structure, experiments, and simulations along with theoretical values for mechanical and thermal properties of gyroid, to topology optimization of the various densities of gyroid in the composite structure. The results are expected to improve the curtain wall designs with future experimental verifications.
