Wu-Dong-Bao (武東堡)is located between the southwest piedmont and terrace of the Ba Gua terrace and the southeast coastal plain of Zhanghua; the area is the part of Zhanghua County and Nantou County nowadays. It is also an administrative division during the Ching Dynasty and Japanese colonial period. Local people here belongs to the Pingpu race Hoanya(洪雅族)and then Dawu county Tavocol(大武郡社)appears on this field. After the relocation of the Han people in Ching Dynasty ,the majority of settlements of the same surname have lived together . With the development of settlements, the path which the residents depend on comes to appear abundantly and interweaves transportion network closely. Especially, due to the ancient trail(古道) , the terrace and the plain have been linked more closely. This makes the residents from the terrace and the plain of Wu-Dong-Bao could keep contact possible and become an interactive living network. From economic activity aspect, because of agricultural products are different between the terrace and the plain, the residents carry their own crops to exchange and get their own needs, thus it makes of the economic living network possible. Their main beliefs are Mazu and Daoist . By the ancient trail and other path , they go on a pilgrimage . The religious living network has been formed during this time. Furthermore, that the statistics show the region of the intermarriage is primarily in the fort during Japanese colonial period .On the terrace, the bride can take the big sedan to marry to the groom in the plain through of the ancient trai. This kind of interpersonal network expansion has been formated through marriage and the intermarry living network therefore is formed. Another study finds that at this time, the scope of the network formed by the marketing sphere, the religious sphere ,and the intermarry sphere are mainly inside the fort . " Wu-Dong-Bao " is not only the scope of an executive area, but also the main area of the residents activities of economic, religious, and intermarry living networks .

Abstract This thesis is to study the main ideology of Taiwan Presbyterian Churches (TPC) in the period of 1950-1960. Taiwan Presbyterian Churches has been through late Ching Dynasty, Japanese Occupation, and Taiwan Restoration periods. Churches went through social changes from English and Japanese colony periods, then reverted back to Greater China and to indigenous recognition of local churches periods. How was the main ideology of Presbyterian churches formed? Why there were such tremendous shifts? Historically, Taiwan Presbyterian Churches Council (TPCC) was established after World War II. Then TPCC became a member of World Council of Churches (WCC) and World Presbyterian Alliance (WPA). TPCC was participating in Ecumenical Unity Movement and being part of international churches. During Multiplication Movement and Centennial Celebration of Presbyterian Churches Establishment period, Taiwan Presbyterian Churches was facing the accusation of Kuo-Ming-Tung (KMT) government. KMT government labelled TPC as a “Communist Alliance” Christian organization. TPCC was forced to withdraw from WCC. Under internal and external pressures situation Taiwan Presbyterian Churches had a significant paradigm shift on her main ideology. It changed from the stand of emphasizing Gospel evangelism in the past to a political main ideology of advocating human rights and self-determination of Taiwanese people. Such a tremendous change from the past and its major shift on main ideology is a worthwhile research and analysis. This is the intention and purpose of this thesis study. In past decades there were several Self-Determination movements from Taiwan Presbyterian Churches. Among those movements two had the most impact. They were 1971 “National Proclamation” and 1973 “Proclamation of Taiwanese Self-Determination”. There was a difference between Taiwanese-speaking churches and Mandarin-speaking churches in this stand. The shift of TPC was transitioning III from a religious stand of gospel evangelism ministry to a political ideology of advocating human rights and self-determination of Taiwanese people. On surface such changes came from international instability, Taiwan’s withdraw from UN Security Council, and US president Nixon’s visit to China for normalization with China. Those events might jeopardize the basic human living rights of Taiwanese people. Those self-determination movements were launched on the bases of combining religious concerns and recognition of Taiwanese people and her land. However such a drastic shift of main ideology in TPC can be traced back to Mr. Wu-Dong Huang (TPCC Council Chairman) and his leadership in TPCC at that period of time. In this period (1951-1965) Centennial Celebration of Churches Establishment and P.K.U. have sowed the seed of self-determination in the land of Taiwan. Because this period of history in many past studies they were vague and few deeper research on the subject. So that this study is based on the period of Centennial Celebration of Presbyterian Churches Establishment and P.K.U. led by TPCC chairman Wu Dong Huang. The theme of this study is focused on the main ideology shifts of Presbyterian Churches. This thesis will give better understanding and handle of historical backgrounds behind political theology of Taiwan Presbyterian Churches. Key Words: Presbyterian Churches Council, Main Ideology of Presbyterian Churches, Centennial Celebration of Presbyterian Churches, P.K.U..

Abstract Transformation and Transcendence through the Forms of Squares and Circles--A Study on Shueh-wu Dong’s Chinese Ink Paintings The purpose of this study was to construct a visual realm of “no inside, no outside” and “unity of objects and humans” by the visual transformation created by the inner drive and dynamic power of the geometric forms of squares and circles. In other words, this study purposed to create a spiritual form of the inter-perception between the external world and the internal world. By explaining and using the purity, primordiality, nature, and pulsation of the elements of forms, and by using the precise construction, images, symbols, and metaphors of geometric forms, this study tries to open up our visual horizon and expand the width and depth of our ability to express our consciousness, as well as to discover the essence of being. Hence, connotations in artistic works can be inspired and developed. This study applied the philosophical method, creation quality thinking method, and art history research method to explore the transformation and transcendence of the forms of squares and circles in the ink paintings of the author of this paper. Based on the problems derived from the forms of squares and circles, this study considered the relevant theories in order to examine and analyze creation concepts and practical examples representing the transformation and transcendence of squares and circles. This author’s experience of life and his own introspection on the experience of creating were integrated into this study. Artistic creations include three aspects. 1) The connotation, symbols, and characteristics of squares and circles. 2) The transformation of the forms of squares and circles in artistic creations. 3) The transcendence created by the artistic conception of squares and circles in artistic creations. In terms of the practice of artistic creation, three intersecting subtopics were drafted based on the transformation of the forms of squares and circles to visualize abstract concepts of creation and to project the internal life and tension of artistic works. These three subtopics are the remains of life, the transformation of mind and sprit, and harmonic transcendence. Through these subtopics, this study laid out the author’s realization and interpretation of the application of the forms of squares and circles in ink paintings. Through ink paintings, symbols, metaphors, surrealistic juxtaposition, and other diverse expressive devices were used to present a harmonic perfection of paintings. To sum up, the purposes of this study were: 1. To probe into theories derived from the symbols, forms and artistic concepts of squares and circles, and to look into their connotations in artistic works. 2. To develop this author’s creative concept of ink paintings by means of exploring the theories of the forms of squares and circles. 3. To implement and verify creative concepts by processing ink paintings. To transform abstract concepts into concrete visual forms and to improve the quality of the creative work. 4. To interpret the three subtopics of the transformation and transcendence of the forms of squares and circles, the remains of life, transformation of mind and sprit, and harmonic transcendence in terms of the creativity concepts, contents, themes, styles, skills, and overall representation. 5. Through introspection on this series of artistic works, this study attempted to broaden our mind and probe the direction for future creative works. The following conclusions were drawn after an exploration of theories and a series of practical works. 1. This study transformed visual, psychological, or imaginary images into perceivable new forms through the perception and creation of squares and circles. Research on the transformation from symbols to forms and squares and circles as artistic signs, then back to the free transformation and harmonic integration of the essence of life in the thoughts of Lao-Tzu and Chuang-Tzu (Chinese philosophers in the Spring and Autumn Period) has provided utmost inspiration and space to enable this author to transcend a concrete world and to build the notion of “harmonic wholeness” of artistic creation. 2. The uniqueness of creative works lies in each individual’s different experiences and feelings toward life and nature. Creative works are also a new representation of the transformation of personal emotions and ideas. Through exploring the theories of the forms of squares and circles, this author has broadened his own creativity and thoughts. This author also realizes that transforming spiritual images into works using personal visual language can even help to develop creativity and freedom in creating. The exhibition and interaction among spiritual intuition, the materials in ink painting, and artistic works not only makes manifest an artist’s personal style and uniqueness but also helps construct aesthetic and creation concepts suitable for this author. 3. The construction of geometric squares and circles are considered to be a representation of a spiritual organism. Geometric squares and circles endow images with vitality that cannot be expressed by brush or ink. This study transformed creative concepts into concrete visual forms to represent the internal life and tension of works, as well as this author’s practice and interpretation of squares and circles which are applied to ink paintings. This assists this author to discover himself and to clarify his thoughts. In addition, based on the free, expressive, and relaxing spirit of the ink paintings, this author attempted to deal with the harmonic relations between form and substance when creating, to break down the boundary of space and time, and to achieve an integration of nature and humans, as well as a realm of harmonic perfection. 4. The value of art lies in the fact that both artistic works and thoughts are able to return to the essence of life. From the artistic works on the subtopics, the remains of life, transformation of mind and sprit, and harmonic transcendence, we can explore and penetrate into the core of life’s tempo, and liberate ourselves from the limitation of natural substances to satisfy our spiritual needs and realize the free essence of life. Hence, creators are able to have the space to express their true selves with rich and diverse creativity. Art can thus be extended and developed. 5. Through introspection and generalization of the series of works, the spiritual images of this author are expected to be internalized into artistic works and to enrich vitality in these simple works. We are expected to accept different artistic theories and concepts from the east and the west with an open mind and broad spiritual vision. Moreover, we are also expected to explore the essence of human beings and nature, to establish personal philosophical notions, and to continue with further research. By intuition and using life experiences , we examine the essence of human beings and nature in daily life. By learning contents and forms, we gradually form our personal style in creative works, then refine and make sublime the spirit of ink paintings, and furthermore, raise ink paintings to a new level of infinitude.

Many researches have already been demonstrated the correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Physical Fitness performance in Taiwan and overseas. However, most of the studies used cross-section data to present the relations between the BMI and Physical Fitness of students in each school year. Those may not show longitudinal changes in different school year. Therefore, the analysis of panel data was preceded in this research. The participants and data were adopted from parts of departments in Dong-Wu Vocational School, Chia-yi. Besides, the interval was among 101, 102, and 103 school year. There were overall 436 students (149 male, 287 female) after deduction and withdrawing. Physical fitness score in this research included Modified Sit & Reach Test, Bent-Knee Sit-up Test, Hexathlon Test and Cardiopulmonary Endurance Run & Walk. The samplings were divided into 3 groups: all samplings, 149 male students, and 287 female students. Those groups at 10th-12th grade were separately analyzed by regression analysis. As the result of regression analysis, negative correlation was shown between BMI and Hexathlon Test in group all sampling and group male students. The stronger lower limb power is, the lower score BMI shows. In addition, BMI and Cardiopulmonary Endurance Run & Walk of 800m and 1600m have presented positive correlation. Therefore, poor performance students in Cardiopulmonary Endurance Run had higher score in BMI. For the female sampling, when they get older, BMI has significant effects in Cardiopulmonary Endurance Run & Walk. But other physical fitness tests have no definitely results in BMI.

This thesis focuses on patterns of textual usage (wenli文例) in oracle bone inscriptions, and deals with the arrangement and classification of oracle bone prognostications (chan-tz’u占辭) during the reign of Emperor Wu Ding 武丁 (ca. 1250 B.C.-ca.1150 B.C.) An oracle bone inscription usually consists of a preface (敘辭), a charge (命辭), a prognostication(占辭), and a verification (驗辭). Sometimes it is difficult to comprehend the inscription because of the omission of one or more elements. However, the systematic analysis of prognostications allows for much improved interpretation of these difficult inscriptions. Chapter two and three discuss the inscriptions’ patterns of textual usage, including grammatical structure and inscription placement, as well as analyzing differences between the employment of scapulas and turtle shells. It also compares the king’s divination inscriptions (王卜辭), such as the Shi group, Bing group, and Chu group, with the prince’s divination inscriptions (非王卜辭) of the Huadong group. Chapter four classifies the themes of these prognostications during the Wu Ding era, which include sacrifice, meteorological occurrences, harvest, warfare, and childbirth. Chapter five analyzes the relationship between prognostications and verifications, and shows that due to the structure of the prognostications, instances in which the verification greatly differs from the prognostication are extremely rare. Chapter six offers a conclusion in regard to the above discussions.

【Summary】 With the gradual progress of our society, people’s living standard is higher and higher. However, when we enjoy the benefit of new technology, we also face many problems of which new technology brings about to our environment. People in the modern city are often busy with their life. They are not as sensitive to the change of our environment as before, but instead they passively accept the current environment they live around. A temple gateway, which exits as a traditional space, was once a meaningful place deserving people’s memory. However, from modern people’s points of view, a temple gateway becomes a crowd and dirty place for worship. In fact, the function of a temple gateway is more than worship. In ancient times, festival and religious ceremony such as temple fairs were often held on the temple gateway. Temple fairs were important activities in traditional Chinese society. In addition to the function of holding temple fairs, in daily life, a temple gateway was also a place for neighboring people to gather together and take a rest. I am wondering why temple gateway space, nowadays, loses its functions as a place for religious ceremony and people’s gathering, but instead becomes a place surrounded by vendors and cars. Some temple gateway spaces in the city are taken as parking lots or even worse some are empty without any use. In contrast to the gateway space in the city, the gateway space in rural areas does not change too much and keep its functions as traditional times. Therefore, the present study takes temple gateway space as a starting point. The investigation can be classified into three fields. First, collection of related literature 1. understanding the relationship between temple gateway and city space. 2. original traditional functions. Second, trace back of historical literature 1. understanding the social roles played by temple gateway during the development of local places. 2. changing process and characteristics Third, empirical study 1. understanding the functions of current temple gateways and their surroundings. 2. understanding the management of temple gateway Finally, I want to clarify the problems resulted from temple gateway space and messy surroundings from two aspects. First, an analysis of environment characteristics to conclude the disorder of temple gateway and surroundings. Second, investigating the changes of functions of temple gateway and their reasons. According to the results of the present study, I will provide some suggestions with an aim to minimize the interplay of temple gateway and its surroundings. As a conclusion, the present study found that the temple gateway space in modern cities: (一) Many original functions such as rest function, politics function, and society function, gradually disappear. In addition, commerce function and traffic function have changed to other style. The disappear or change of functions can be attributed to three reasons: inadequate temple gateway space, the change of management and transfer of gathering center. (二) The change of commerce function and traffic function results in various chaotic environmental problems. A further investigation indicates that such chaos comes from four traffic problems. 1. People coming for worship park their motorcycles or cars at random. 2. With a care of cleanness of the temple, the manager of the temple does not open temple gateway space for parking, so that environment around temple can not afford so many cars and only increase the traffic problem. 3. After the temple has been developed as a visiting place, the more and more people, cars and vendors as well as surroundings influence with each other. 4. Once temple gateway space is opened for parking, a new problem arises when temple gateway space is occupied as a parking space.

This study examined the pretreatment protocols for cryopreservation of in-vitro grown apical buds of two Taiwan native medicinal herbs Mosla scabra (Thunb.) Wu & Li and Laggera alata (D. Don) Sch. Bip. ex Oliver. In the meanwhile, the apical buds were used to examine the changes in water status and ultrastructure in order to correlate with the effects of cryopreservation procedure. The plantets of M. scabra were precultured for 7 days on hormone-free solidified Muashige and Skoog medium (MS medium) supplemented with 0.3 M sucrose. The excised shoot tips were treated with loading solution (LS) for 60 min and dehydrated with a highly concentrated plant vitrification solution 2 (PVS2) for 120 min. Following this protocol, we achieved the best survival rate of 80.45 ± 6.75 %. The plantets of L. alata were precultured for 21 days on MS medium supplemented with 0.4 M sucrose. The excised shoot tips were treated with LS for 120 min and PVS2 for 180 min. Following this protocol, we achieved the best survival rate of 77.71 ± 4.03 %. The physiological analyses were performed using shoot tips of M. scabra which have been precultured on hormone-free MS medium and supplemented with 0.3 M sucrose for 7 days. The relative water content reduced from 88.02 % to 79.38 %, and the amounts of soluble sugar and soluble protein increased from 13.82 mg g-1 to 35.86 mg g-1, and 4.08 mg g-1 to 5.73 mg g-1, respectively. The osmotic potential and water potential reduced from -0.81 to -1.79 MPa, and -0.92 to -1.77 MPa, respectively. This results showed the preculture procedures greatly enhanced the freezing or dehydration tolerance and improved the survival rate of cryopreservation shoot tips. The apical meristem of M. scabra shoot tip during preculture showed dense cytoplasm and slight plasmolysis. TEM ultrasctuctural examination of shoot tips after cryopreservation revealed the cells had high nucleo-cytoplasm ratio and slight plasmolyzed at first few layers of cells in apical meristem. The estimated interval between plasma membrane and cell wall was 168.42 nm. The 4 to 5 layers of cells below apical meristem had high degree of plasmolysis and the interval between plasma membrane and cell wall was 795.83 nm. This result showed the survived cells after cryopreservation were mainly localized in apical meristem or leaf primordia and subsequently regenerated into plantlets. This study provided an optimal pretreatment protocol for cryopreservation and the results showed greatly improved water relations and ultrastructural changes in of M. scabra and L. alata. This study was one step forward to develop long-term cryopreservation technology.
