Skills and development: The way undergraduate dental students have been taught and their methods of learning have evolved over decades. Education methods and needs: Perhaps the most rapid and exponential changes have been in the last two decades with the introduction and utilisation of digital media platforms and social media capabilities. Academic and clinical aspects of dentistry are divided within the curriculum, but less consideration and logic are exercised when focusing on the methods of delivering education and the students’ own preferences, capabilities and adaptation towards learning. Technology and dental education and what we believe: In higher education, closed questionnaires were provided to both dental students (50) and teachers (10) relating to delivery methods and their beliefs regarding education techniques available. Opinions regarding these methods still differ amongst dental teachers and students, with an affinity from the dental students towards the use of emerging technology available in dentistry. However, the questionnaires revealed both groups preferred education via direct care on patients more than any other method of education. Conclusion: The literature would indicate some progress made within the dental profession relating to the use of digital media, advanced technology and improved dental software, however, this has not yet been transferred to dental higher education, despite an accessible and obvious availability of modern resources and techniques.

The objective was to verify the proportion of dentists in relation to the Angolan population, to undergraduate and graduate courses in dentistry, and to analyze the pedagogical projects of the existing courses. This is a descriptive, exploratory and documentary study that analyzed data on the population and the number of dentists in Angola, obtained through information from the National Statistics Institute and the Order of Doctors of Angola. An application for cell phones called “Qualificar”, made available by the Angolan government, was used to collect information about the existing courses. The websites of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation; National Institute for Evaluation, Accreditation and Recognition of Higher Education Studies in Angola; and the National Press were consulted to collect data related to higher education in Angola. Information on pedagogical projects was obtained directly from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Angola has 701 dentists registered for a population of 30,175,553 inhabitants, that is, a proportion of 1/43,460. Among the eighty existing HEIs, only ten were authorized by the government to offer undergraduate courses in dentistry: six were located in the country's capital and four were distributed in other provinces, with workload varying from 4,688 to 5,536 hours. It was concluded that of the seven academic regions in the country, 4 do not have courses in dentistry; the number of dentists is not compatible with the population of Angola; no HEI offered postgraduate courses in dentistry and there is no standardization of pedagogical projects among the existing undergraduate courses.

The article reveals that the system of masters’ in dentistry professional training in Ukraine does not sufficiently meet the international requirements and education levels regulated by the National Qualifications Framework. At the same time, the updated field standard of higher education in the specialty “Dentistry” (2019) contains a number of contradictory conditions, in particular: the availability of educational-professional training program and educational-scientific (optional for universities) one with different number of credits (300 and 360 correspondingly). The necessity to implement the levels of junior bachelor (dentist’s assistant) and bachelor (odontologist-hygienist) into the model of masters’ in dentistry professional training process was substantiated. This allows students of higher dental education institutions to start practical activity from the first year of studying, which can encourage them to increase the level of their professional competence and restore the preventive component of dental care to the population of Ukraine. It has been proved the expediency to prolong the period of masters’ in dentistry professional training to 6 years with the last year of practically oriented study to ensure compliance of dental education in Ukraine with the requirements of the World Federation for Medical Education in terms of the amount of academic load and the need to strengthen its practical component. A modern model of masters’ in dentisry professional training has been developed in accordance with the National Qualifications Framework and the requirements of the World Federation of Medical Education.

Objective: To evaluate dental students’ perspectives about pre- and post-doctoral pediatric dentistry education venues. Study design: Surveys with visual analog scales (from 0 to100) measuring the educational contribution of pediatric dentistry venues were conducted. The pre-doctoral venues included a 3rd year university twilight clinic (UTC), a 3rd year urban community based clinic (CBC) and 4th year mobile clinics (MCs). The post-doctoral venues included treatment of children under general anesthesia, oral sedations, a regular clinic (no sedations), seminars, journal club, case conferences and studding for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Results: Analyses of variance between the scores indicated that the 3rd year CBC score (68.2 ± 4.5) was statistically significant higher (p= .007) than the one for the 3rd year UTC score (44.9±6.1). The 4th year students’ MCs score (61.4±4.0) was statistically significant higher than their retrospective scores for the 3rd year CBC (56.4±4.4) or UTC (42.2±4.9) scores (p= .03 and .004 respectively). Among the didactic or clinical post-doctoral venues, the regular clinic and the seminars received the highest scores (84.3±1.7 and 71.6±2.8 respectively). Conclusion: pre-doctoral community-based clinical education and post-doctoral regular university based clinic are considered by students to provide the main contribution to pediatric dental education.

This paper first discusses cooperative learning and provides a rationale for its use in higher education. From the literature, six elements are identified that are considered essential to the success of cooperative learning: positive interdependence, face-to-face verbal interaction, individual accountability, social skills, group processing, and appropriate grouping. Three distinct approaches at the postsecondary level are described in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry and Mathematics, and feedback from faculty and students is reported. The three approaches are presented within the context of the disciplines and are compared across the disciplines with respect to the essential six elements. Finally, the authors share some lessons learned from their research and experience in order to assist faculty who wish to incorporate cooperative learning into their teaching.

Second wave of COVID 19 pandemic in Sri Lanka has given rise to multiple challenges in all the sectors and higher education is not spared. Even though there are multiple challenges in effective delivery of education, Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya being the only institute providing undergraduate dental education in Sri Lanka and operated totally free of charge for students has also taken important steps to face the emerging challenges and make timely modifications to teaching and learning methods to ensure the undergraduates achieve the required competency levels without unwarranted risk. As a major change, effectiveness of tele-dentistry has been recognized. COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that there is a severe underutilization of e-learning as an educational tool and the issues with technology and lack of facilities. It has created an environment for all of us to see the dental education in a different perspective and to identify the need for a transformation. It is obvious that the way we practice dentistry and deliver dental education has significantly changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and became a major challenge for us as the dental education in the country is provided free of charge and with limited resources. This opportunity is to be used to review clinical practices including safety measures, dental curricula, teaching and assessment tools to serve the next generation of patients and dentists. Practicing dentistry in pandemics of this nature should undoubtedly be part of the dental education in the future. Keywords: Covid-19; dental education; pandemic; Sri Lanka

Historico-genetic and comparative research methods were used. The reflection of the history of the prosthodontics departments development in Kazan State Dental Institute, Kazan State Medical University, Kazan State Medical University in the literature and archival materials is presented. The main scientific achievements and contribution to the practical activities of the departments’ heads (I.M. Oksman, L.M. Demner, M.Z. Mirgazizov) and staff are demonstrated. The article proves that studying various issues of dental disciplines development is a very promising field of the modern history of science. This is due to the fact that in the modern world, dentistry is undergoing qualitative changes as a science and practice, which makes the study of the historical aspects of its development significantly more relevant. Analysis of the formation and development of prosthodontics in Kazan suggests that unlike some other centers of national dentistry development in Kazan it had a well-organized framework. Thus, organized in 1936 Kazan State Dental Institute and the Department of Prosthodontics have made a significant contribution to the development of higher medical education in Kazan, the development of dental science and practice.

Monitoring in universities and university centers aims to initiate students in teaching and contribute to the improvement of undergraduate education through the articulation of theoretical and practical content, thus favoring the production of knowledge under the guidance of the teacher responsible for a specific curricular component. Monitoring allows students to develop skills associated with teaching and deepening their knowledge; however, there are elements that can hinder this practice, such as the conciliation of monitoring activities with regular academic activities. The objective of this study is to analyze the contribution of monitoring to learning and academic training in the Dentistry Course at UFBA. The sample of this research was composed of 34 students of both sexes, all in the condition of student-monitors of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. A quantitative questionnaire was applied to students in order to analyze various aspects on the monitoring practice. Students interviewed believed that monitoring is relevant for academic training and that this activity brings greater learning during its performance. Of all respondents, 94% believe that monitoring is relevant in initiating students in higher education teaching. Most interviewees reported that they have good relationship with the Advisor Teacher and with monitored students. Monitoring gives the student the opportunity to develop skills and competences associated with teaching, provides personal and professional growth and qualifies the curriculum of those who participate in this process.

Internationalisation may be defined as a series of processes whereby an institute strives to increase its influence and effectiveness through global networking. In higher education, this offers opportunities to enhance communication and mobilisation between educational systems. To be globally competitive, the international university of the future must embrace digital technology, online courses and ongoing lifetime learning, especially for alumni to facilitate networks of global expertise. Oral disease neither recognises nor respects international boundaries, nor therefore should dental education, research and clinical expertise which are highly valued commodities in society. For dentistry, internationalisation offers real opportunities to influence and promote the highest standards of oral health education and clinical practice throughout the world. The international university of the future must recognise the importance of setting the highest standards for oral health across the world while maintaining regional structures and priorities.

In the field of human research, researchers are faced with unexpected moral dilemmas, as a result of the development of technologies applied to health. Due to the great importance of this issue, our objective was to evaluate bioethics instruction in the education of researchers in Brazilian graduate programs in dentistry. Eighty-seven graduate programs in dentistry, recognized by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) were evaluated in this study. Data were extracted independently by two researchers from the CAPES website, and from the websites of the graduate programs, directly or via links to the programs available at the CAPES website. Forty-eight out of 87 programs had an ethics/bioethics course as part of their curricula. Of the graduation programs graded 5, 6 or 7 by CAPES, 38% included bioethics courses, while 62% of the programs graded 3 or 4 by CAPES had bioethics courses as part of their curricula. These findings are an alert to those involved in dental research education, as they showed that, although resolution 196/96 by the National Council of Health regulating human research in Brazil was published ten years ago, bioethics instruction in Brazilian graduate programs in dentistry is still at an incipient stage. This situation indicates a need for ethics pedagogy in the education of young researchers.

One of the benchmarks of national and patriotic upbringing is the attitude to the native country, its cultural and moral values. Over recent years, there have been changes in the issues of state-building ideological doctrine, which has deprived the society of spiritual and moral ideals. As a result, the younger generation is facing in many ways aggressive and destructive attitudes towards an individual, family, state, negligence to patriotic and spiritual feelings. In Ukraine today, one of the priority tasks in the educational process of higher education institutions is to create an effective system of national patriotic education for youth. At the present stage of the historical development, the educators should foster the respectful attitudes to national symbols (Emblem, Flag, and Anthem of Ukraine), boost respect for human rights, support involvement in public and political life of Ukraine, readiness to defend the sovereignty and integrity of the state. The Ukrainian Medical Dental Academy pays huge attention to preserving and strengthening spiritual values, cultural and national traditions, and to revitalizing human moral qualities. Guided by a comprehensive program of national and patriotic education of citizens of Ukraine and by the plan of educational work elaborated by the Department of Management, Education and Humanitarian Work, national and patriotic education at the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry is based on the principles of national orientation, national consciousness, love for Ukrainian people, respect for culture all peoples, activism, critical thinking, reflection, and promotes to state personal public position, social responsibility. ObjectivesFormative peer assessment focuses on learning and development of the student learning process. This implies that students are taking responsibility for assessing the work of their peers by giving and receiving feedback to each other. The aim was to compile research about formative peer assessment presented in higher healthcare education, focusing on the rationale, the interventions, the experiences of students and teachers and the outcomes of formative assessment interventions.DesignA scoping review.Data sourcesSearches were conducted until May 2019 in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Education Research Complete and Education Research Centre. Grey literature was searched in Library Search, Google Scholar and Science Direct.Eligibility criteriaStudies addressing formative peer assessment in higher education, focusing on medicine, nursing, midwifery, dentistry, physical or occupational therapy and radiology published in peer-reviewed articles or in grey literature.Data extractions and synthesisOut of 1452 studies, 37 met the inclusion criteria and were critically appraised using relevant Critical Appraisal Skills Programme, Joanna Briggs Institute and Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool tools. The pertinent data were analysed using thematic analysis.ResultThe critical appraisal resulted in 18 included studies with high and moderate quality. The rationale for using formative peer assessment relates to giving and receiving constructive feedback as a means to promote learning. The experience and outcome of formative peer assessment interventions from the perspective of students and teachers are presented within three themes: (1) organisation and structure of the formative peer assessment activities, (2) personal attributes and consequences for oneself and relationships and (3) experience and outcome of feedback and learning.ConclusionHealthcare education must consider preparing and introducing students to collaborative learning, and thus develop well-designed learning activities aligned with the learning outcomes. Since peer collaboration seems to affect students’ and teachers’ experiences of formative peer assessment, empirical investigations exploring collaboration between students are of utmost importance.

The primary task of higher medical education in Ukraine today is to provide health care facilities, competitive — able, staff with fundamental knowledge. The competent component of the applicant for higher education, first of all, involves the introduction of updated approaches to the educational process. When studying the component “Pediatric Surgical Dentistry ” one of the most difficult to perceive, but very important is the topic of “Congenital malformations”. Experience shows that difficulties arise in mastering practical material. With this in mind, the aim of our work was to optimize the teaching of the component “Pediatric Surgical Dentistry” aimed at forming a competency component in higher education. When teaching the topic, first of all, you should focus on the relevance of the problem. In addition, in order to master the material in the process of practical training, we use interactive teaching methods: brainstorming, case method, presentations, role-playing and business games. To systematize the theoretical knowledge of students obtained in a practical lesson on this topic, lecture material is taught, the content of which is scientifically sound and supplemented by a multimedia presentation. To ensure a balance between theoretical and practical parts of higher education training on the basis of the department created and operates a regional diagnostic and counseling center for children with congenital and acquired disabilities, whose experience and experience is an additional source of methodological support of the educational process. Our data and teaching methods aimed at obtaining the necessary knowledge and practical skills of applicants to study the part “Congenital malformations” indicate the prospects for their implementation, as it further creates the basic prerequisites for further research to optimize the learning process to form competencies in accordance with educational-professional program.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the profile of dental students and its relationship to anxiety levels. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was applied to 207 first- to fifth-year undergraduates enrolled in the dentistry program at the School of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing, Federal University of Ceará, Brazil. Participants were aged 17 to 29 years, and the maiority were women (57.5%). Students had a weekly workload of up to 40 hours and performed at least two complementary activities, in addition to their undergraduate training. Almost all students (95.7%) had attended private high schools and 80.6% lived with their parents or spouses. Regarding parental education, 59.4% of mothers and 55.6% of fathers had a higher education degree. Most students showed medium levels of anxiety according to measurements of state anxiety (53.1%) and trait anxiety (81.6%). It can be concluded that more than 50% of students in the Dentistry graduation course of the Federal University of Ceará showed an average level of anxiety, and that the excessive workload and enrichment activities necessary to obtain the undergraduate degree in Dentistry probably can be influencing the anxiety levels of students, however, more studies and statistical tests should be performed to identify the root causes in order to preserve the mental health of these future dentists.

This paper examines the restructuring of the delivery system resulting from managed care. As HMOs consolidate to a few large companies in urban areas, they put great pressure on medical providers to reduce their costs and excess delivery capacity. In this environment, academic health centers face serious problems, because HMOs are reluctant to pay their higher charges, and public educational subsidies are declining. Managed care is unlikely to have the same impact on dentistry. Although managed dental care is growing, most Americans will not be enrolled, since they do not have dental insurance. Also, the supply of dentists is starting to decline, increasing the relative demand for dental services. Managed care will have only a limited direct impact on most dental schools, but a significant indirect effect. As academic health center budgets are reduced, all health professional schools can expect to contribute to solving the financial problems of University hospitals and medical schools. The response of dental academicians to these challenges will determine the future of dental education and research for the next decade. Bold new initiatives are needed to find new sources of revenue to support educational and research programs.

This study examines lexical borrowings from Standard Arabic containing the voiceless uvular stop [q] sound in the speech of 52 Christian rural migrant speakers to the city of Hims in Syria. The study shows that both older and younger males use more lexical borrowings than older and younger females respectively. This gender difference is attributed to the different gender roles and expectations of males and females in society and consequently the gender identity projected by the use of more or less lexical borrowings. Age does not play a role in the use of lexical borrowings, although younger speakers are generally more educated than older speakers and education plays some role. Those at the top of the education scale, i.e. holding professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, and master’s degrees, show higher use of lexical borrowings than speakers with bachelor’s degrees and lower levels of education. The difference is statistically significant between speakers with professional degrees, on the one hand, and those with bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees and elementary school education, on the other. This difference is not statistically significant with speakers with middle and high school education. Interestingly, education overrides the gender effect when females are at the top of the education scale. That is, females who are highly educated tend to use lexical borrowings as much as males of the same educational level. In this sense, lexical borrowing becomes a marker of higher education not only among males, but also among females. In other words, the gender identity differentiation diminishes when speakers are highly educated.

Objective: Although discouraged, pacifier usage is widespread and often practiced beyond two years of age. The current study explored the effects of maternal education and dental visits on the age of pacifier withdrawal. Study design: The dental histories of 213 children (53.1% male) attending a primary school in Madrid were obtained along with maternal education level and age at pacifier withdrawal. Data were analyzed by using independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA two-way ANOVA and a complementary non-parametric approach was also used. Results: There was a significant effect of maternal education on the age of pacifier withdrawal; the higher the maternal education, the younger the age of withdrawal. The frequency of dental visits influenced the relationship between maternal education and the age of pacifier withdrawal . Dental visits considerably shortened pacifier use among children with low- and medium- educated mothers. Conclusions: Pediatric dentists play a critical role in the correction of unhealthy oral habits such as prolonged pacifier use. The educational component of peediatric dentistry could reverse the lack of knowledge or misinformation among high-risk groups (e.g. low maternal education). As a consequence, we recommend that children start dental visits at an early age and maintain visits with a high frequency.

Background: India, a developing country, faces many challenges in rendering health needs to its countrymen. The influence of culture is seen in every discipline of health and medical practices, and dentistry is no exception. This study was performed to investigate the existence of myths and taboos in dentistry, to assess the variation of these myths across various demographic aspects and socio-economic status, to co-relate the existence of myths with the oral health of the subject and to impart education to the people regarding abolishing the myth as that will be a hindrance towards a healthy life in patients. Methods: The study had a cross-sectional design, used a structured questionnaire and was conducted to assess the existence of dental myths and taboos and to determine its correlation with the OHIS index of the patients. Statistical analysis software SPSS V 16.0 was used. Descriptive & inferential statistical analysis was performed on categorical and continuous data. Chi-square, independent sample T tests and ANOVA test were used to compare the distribution of caries and OHI-S between different groups. P value less than 0.05 (p<0.05) was considered to be significant. Socioeconomic status was also calculated. Results: In the present study it was found that the there was almost an equal distribution of prevalence of myths in the educated as well as uneducated patients .Also the ratio of existence of myths was found higher in females as compared to males. Conclusions: Existence of myths and taboos regarding dental health has started decreasing among the urban population due to the widespread of awareness regarding dentistry. But still there is prevalence of some myths in the patients having primary education as compared to patients having secondary and tertiary education. If community is educated about proper prevention and cure, the myths relating dental concepts will vanish from the society and over all dental health status of the community will improve.

Introduction: Problem-based learning (PBL) is resource-intensive, particularly as it relates to tutors for small group learning. This study explores the factors that contributed to tutor participation in PBL in a medical training program, examining tutor recruitment and retention within the larger scope of teacher satisfaction and motivation in higher education. Method: From 2007 to 2010, following the introduction of new PBL-based curriculum in undergraduate medical education, all faculty members serving as tutors were invited to attend an interview as part of this study. Semi-structured interviews approximately one hour in length were conducted with 14 individuals- 11 who had tutored in PBL within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and 3 faculty members who had chosen not to participate in PBL. Thematic analysis was employed as the framework for analysis of the data. Results: Seven factors were identified as affecting recruitment and retention of tutors in the undergraduate medical education program. Discussion: We suggest that identification and strengthening of the factors that promote tutor recruitment and retention may serve to strengthen PBL initiatives and, furthermore, may increase our understanding of motivation by academics in other aspects of medical education.

Despite ongoing insecurity, Afghanistan has demonstrated improvement in health outcomes. Reasons for this success include a strategic public-private health service delivery model and investment in Afghan health care workforce development. Afghan universities have the primary responsibility for ensuring that an adequate health care workforce is available to private and public health care delivery settings. Most entry-level health care providers working in Afghanistan are educated within the country. However, university constraints, including faculty shortages and limited access to professional development, have affected both the flow of the health care workforce pipeline and the skill levels and competencies of those who do enter the workforce. Aware of these constraints and workforce needs, the administration at Kabul University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), working in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, prioritized investment in strengthening technical and academic capabilities within four faculties (anesthesiology, dentistry, medical laboratory technology, and midwifery). KUMS partnered with the University of Minnesota in 2017 with United States Agency for International Development support through the University Support and Workforce Development Program. Together they established a unique training-of-trainers (TOT) faculty development program to improve faculty knowledge and skills specific to their technical expertise, as well as knowledge and skills in instructional design and research methods. In this article, we describe the successes and challenges associated with partnership development, implementation, and sustainability.

Abstract Antibiotic resistance is a growing public health concern. Antibiotics continue to be prescribed by some clinicians to resolve dental pain even though research indicates that antibiotics are not effective for treating conditions such as irreversible pulpitis. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which current research and evidence around irreversible pulpitis has been translated into dental practice and the gaps in dentists’ knowledge. An on-line clinical vignette format survey questionnaire about treatment of irreversible pulpitis was distributed to the members of the Academy of Operative Dentistry and Academy of General Dentistry (US based international dental bodies). Their responses were recorded and evaluated. A total of 403 dentists participated in the survey. Over a third (39.3%) indicated they would prescribe antibiotics for symptomatic irreversible pulpitis in a permanent tooth occurring without any signs of systemic infection. The rest indicated they would not prescribe antibiotics; most of them would prescribe an analgesic combined with pulpectomy. Those who had undertaken advanced education training achieved a significantly higher mean knowledge score compared to those with just a primary dental degree (p=0.011). Similarly, full or part time academicians had a higher mean knowledge score than the clinicians who work only in private practice (p=0.014). Some dentists continue to prescribe antibiotics inappropriately for alleviating pain due to irreversible pulpitis. Antibiotic prescribing practices of dentists with advanced education or academic engagement were better as compared to the other participants. There is clear evidence of antibiotic over-prescribing for irreversible pulpitis which needs to be addressed urgently.

The aim of the study was to compare the oral hygiene habits of students from different provinces and universities, from the dental faculty and biomedical engineering. Another aim was to analyze development of dental care habits during growth in relation to education both the parent and the student himself. University students were asked to answer the survey on voluntary basis. 244 students have answered the questions; gender, year of birth, study level, education of their parents, their toothbrushing habit and oral health level awareness were questioned in detail. Of the 244 volunteers, 122 study at the faculty of dentistry, whereas the other 122 study at the biomedical engineering faculty. While 53.7% of all participants brush their teeth after breakfast and 94.3% brush before bedtime, 81.1% of dentistry students brush twice a day, whereas the ratio of biomedical students brushing twice a day is 59.8%. On the one hand, 99.2% of dentistry students brush their teeth before going to bed whereas, biomedical students were 89.3%, which indicates a significant difference. Dental floss utilization among dental students was higher than the biomedical students, and the difference was statistically significant. For self-assessment of their oral hygiene habits, both groups have evaluated themselves between ordinary and well. Tooth brushing habit is initially adopted from the family. Correct brushing is established upon the guidance of the dentist. Therefore, teaching proper toothbrushing techniques to the families should be aimed. This will enable socially healthier oral hygiene, thus creating high awareness communities

Female professionals’ existence in dentistry is a result of ending slavery, emerging women's movements, progress towards a democratic state and wider dissemination of human rights. It was only at the end of the 19th century that women started their emancipation movement while leaving behind the narrow space of the household and equal to men populated the world of the business. However, it was a long way. Now we follow the life of the very first women in different countries demonstrating the problems they were facing: missing higher education, to be accepted by their patients and male family members. Since Western medicine claimed specific medical education to be a licensed practitioner, women found it much more difficult to enter the medical profession except midwifery. Nevertheless, we found in our research more among the first female dental practitioners who supported their husband, brother or father in their office. These women were brave and determined, tough, smart and hardworking, true heroes who faced all difficulties. They were active this way for a few hundred years, until the 1800s when the first graduated women dentists began practising. These women broke barriers in the world of dental care and demonstrated that dentistry was able to ensure bright smiles for their patients.

The modern conditions of reforming the educational system of Ukraine, the problem of professional training of doctors has become urgent. The development and use of new, innovative technologies in education and self-education aimed at the formation of clinical skills is always an urgent task. The purpose of the publication is to analyze and highlight the content of innovative educational technologies for teaching and teaching in higher education, in particular in the clinical department, in the process of preparing future dentists. Educational cooperation at the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry is an extensive network of interactions in the following four areas. 1) teacher - student (during the survey, preparation for the defense of the medical history) 2) student - student in pairs (dyads) and in triples (triads) during the supervision of patients; 3) group-wide - the interaction of students in the entire academic team, for example, during clinical examinations, clinical conferences; 4) a teacher - a team (during educational work in classroom and extracurricular time). The use of interactive, cooperative, collective-group learning contributes not only to better memorization of the material, but also to its identification and use in everyday life. Interactive teaching methods in small groups contribute to the development of such personal qualities as sociability, cooperation. Communication and interaction skills are formed in the team, talents and abilities are revealed quickly and efficiently to solve tasks.

The dental records of the sampling comprised all patients treated in 1998 and 1999. Trials were standardized and a pilot study was carried out to determine the feasibility of the proposed study. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to calculate the level of significance that was set at 5%. Logistic regression models were used to confirm significant effect of some variables on the endodontic outcome. The final sample size comprised 311 (75.9%) women and 99 (21.1%) men. The majority of cases (82.9%) were considered successful. Success was less frequent for patients with up to primary school education (55.6%) than for those with a higher degree of education (89.7%). The vital condition of the pulp showed a statistically significant relationship with the success of endodontic therapy (p<0.05). These results suggest that it is possible to attain very high success rates for endodontic treatment when both the intraradicular and the extraradicular causes of failure of endodontic treatment are well managed.

Abstract Currently in the modern pedagogical process at a higher medical institution, teachers often shift emphasis towards the new technologies and methods for treating diseases. In this case, classical techniques, their development, and scientists who influenced the formation of orthopaedic dentistry are undeservedly downplayed in the training process. In order to preserve the interest of dental students in the historical process, it is necessary to teach the material taking into account modern processes that occur in orthopaedic dentistry. We searched for materials on the history of prosthetic dentistry in the scientific and historical literature. A special attention was paid to those moments of history that had been reflected in the present through modern materials, schools or methods of treating patients. After the selection of the materials and their discussion, the teaching staff of the KrasSMU Department-Clinic for Prosthetic Dentistry made proposals regarding each of the nine training cycles. In each study cycle, we included some information about historical moments and personalities that are known to be important for students’ moral education and learning. Specifically, we used information taken from the scientific and historical literature, autobiographies, memoirs of contemporaries, and presentations containing material suitable for assimilation. Thus, we managed to naturally include the history of prosthetic dentistry into the educational process. The applied approach to teaching the history of medicine had many positive aspects. Following up the development of views on various prosthetic dentistry issues allowed us to provide a more natural introduction to complex clinical disciplines. We emphasized the scientific experience continuity and the interdisciplinary approach to professional issues. A number of positive moral and ethical qualities were discussed that have allowed scientists to achieve significant results in their activities. Through the demonstration of domestic scientists’ achievements, we carried out promotion of patriotism among the students. Considering the above advantages, we emphasize the importance of teaching the history of prosthetic dentistry in educating future dentists.

Latvian as a foreign language is being learned both inside and outside Latvia. It is done in higher education institutions as well as various group language classes and individual lessons. The goals of learners range from professional and research-driven needs to personal interests. A significant part of Latvian language learners in Latvia are international students who study in higher education institutions in Latvia. Those are not exclusively exchange students. There is a considerable number of international students who study full-time academic programs in universities of Latvia. The first adult-oriented textbook of Latvian as a foreign language came out in 1960s. Since then, quite a lot of various learning materials have been created with 11 intermediary languages. However, the contents of almost all textbooks are targeted to people who have either a general or philological interest in Latvian, because in the higher education institutions outside Latvia, Latvian is often learned for research purposes as a part of philology studies. The authors of the present paper – Inga Kaija and Inga Laizāne – teach Latvian to international students who study dentistry at Riga Stradiņš University in Latvia. These students have a specific goal when learning Latvian, namely, they have to be able to communicate to their patients in Latvian, which is using the language in a professional environment. The pre-existing textbooks are not suitable for reaching this goal in a relatively short time. Thus, a new textbook had to be created to support the learners’ needs. The textbook “Latvian for dentistry students” has been created to support acquisition of the basics of Latvian with the purpose of enabling a conversation between a dentist and a patient. The needs of the language learners have been acknowledged by employing the communicative approach but also including explanations on grammatical topics. A grammar overview is included in the end of the book. It could be useful for any adult learner of Latvian as a foreign language as well as teachers. Its target user is the practically, rather than academically inclined learner. This kind of grammar overview has not been included in any textbooks of Latvian before.

Purpose: In addition to dental education, a system for the evaluation and management of dental licensing and certification is required to meet the growing societal demand for more competent dentists. In this study, the Delphi technique was used to gather opinions from a variety of professionals on the problems of and remedies for the dental license management system in Korea. Methods: Delphi surveys were conducted from April 2016 to October 2016 in South Korea. A variety of dental professionals were included and categorized into 3 groups according to their expertise as follows: the basic dentistry group, the clinical dentistry group, and the policy group. The Delphi technique was conducted in 3 rounds of e-mail surveys, each with different questions that probed with increasing depth on the dental license management system. In each successive round, the responses were categorized, scored on a Likert scale, and statistically analyzed. Results: After categorizing the results of the first survey and ranking the results of the second survey using the Delphi technique, regulation by a licensing authority was found to be the most critical issue. This was followed by the license renewal system, continuing education, a tiered licensure system, improvement of foreign license approval, and utilization of retirees, in decreasing order of importance. The third Delphi survey showed a similar ranking, with regulation by a licensing authority being the major concern. Opinions regarding the dental license management system were provided as open-ended responses. The responses of the 3 groups showed statistically significant differences in the scores for the issue of regulation by a licensing authority. After re-grouping into the dentistry group and the policy group, the issue received a significantly higher score in the dentistry group. Conclusion: The quality of dental treatment should be managed to protect patients and dental professionals. For this purpose, the establishment of an independent license regulation authority along with legislative changes is required.

The pandemic around the world has made adjustments not only in our lives, but also in the educational process in particular. Prolonged quarantine caused by COVID-19 has forced teachers in most higher education institutions to go online. If other higher education institutions could conduct mixed forms of education, the specifics of medical universities, where most classes are held at medical bases of hospitals and clinics, left no choice and focused exclusively on distance education. It is very important that the performance of the department’s distance workload fully meets the planned workload of the departments, all the requirements of the educational process and quality preparation of fifth-year students for the licensing exam KROK 2 and certification of graduates. Relevant changes also affected the teaching of the section «Diseases of the oral mucosa» at the Faculty of Dentistry. According to the working curriculum and regulations on the educational process, classes are held according to the method of a single day and last 6 hours. The Microsoft Teems system was proposed for consideration by the university administration for practical classes and lectures. In addition to the actual online communication, this system provided many different features. In accordance with the decision of the meeting of the department, the following time schedule was approved. А lesson on consideration and discussion of a new topic begins. After that, practical work and a break are provided. Since this course is a final one, a lot of attention should be focused on preparing for the licensing exam. Upon completion of the discipline, students defend their medical history. Photos of the paper version are dumped by the teacher for verification on the university mailbox. Actually, the defense of the story takes place online with a short presentation of the works
