Abstract An improved visible spectrophotometric method has been developed for cyclopiazonic acid in poultry feed and corn. The method Is based on the reaction of cyclopiazonic acid with Ehrlich reagent and detection at 580 nm. Reaction conditions were optimized with respect to reaction and measurement times and acid and Ehrlich reagent concentrations. Calibration curves were linear from 1 to 20 μg cyclopiazonic acid in 3 mL Ehrlich reagent, with a lower detection limit of 0.08 mg/kg for 50 g samples of poultry feed and corn. Recoveries from 50 g samples of poultry feed spiked with cyclopiazoni

trans-2,3-Dimethoxy-3-(phenylamino)flavanones (2), a new type of flavanone derivatives, are synthesized from flavanones or 2'-hydroxychalcones in two steps, the first one being a condensation with nitrosobenzenes (Ehrlich-Sachs reaction) and the second an oxidation with (diacetoxyiodo)benzene in methanol. Nitrone formation, an important side reaction of the Ehrlich-Sachs reaction, has also been exploited to synthesize 2 simply by use of an excess of nitrosobenzene in aqueous methanol. Syntheses of several analogues of 2 are also reported.Key words: trans-2,3-dimethoxy-3-(phenylamino)flavanones

A study regarding the optimization of the chemical reactions was made for the case of di-(β-chloroethyl)-amines. The quantum chemical analysis by Spartan’14 was made in order to establish the most stable configuration of the ground electronic states for the obtained chemical structures and some physico-chemical parameters of N-mustards reported in this paper. Aspergillus fuscicans, a new species within Aspergillus section Usti from Argentinean semi-arid soil is introduced. Molecular, morphological and physiological studies were conducted, based on sequence analysis of partial β-tubulin and calmodulin sequence data. Aspergillus fuscicans formed a distinct, well-defined clade related to A. calidoustus and A. pseudodeflectus. In addition, A. fuscicans was able to grow and sporulate at 37 ºC, and had a negative Ehrlich reaction. Morphological and physiological features could be used to differentiate the new species from its phylogenetically related tax

Yeast of the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae are usually responsible for most of the fermentative activity, and many data sets clearly demonstrate the important impact of this species on the quality and character of the final product.

In impoverished and resource limited communities such as townships, and welfare organizations, areas such as living and sleeping spaces are sometimes shared with animals, and occasionally humans. Dogs play an integral role in our lives and have become part of the family. Therefore, it is probable that ectoparasites, such as ticks, that feed on dogs also feed on other vertebrates, thereby, transmitting pathogens. The primary aim of this study was to screen for the presence of tick-borne pathogens in dogs from welfare organisations and townships in Cape Town, with special focus on Ehrlichia and

Human infections with Ehrlichia species have been found worldwide. It appears that at least six different species infect humans, and clinical and epidemiological data are highly suggestive of sole transmission by ticks. The clinical illness is a nonspecific febrile syndrome, often accompanied by cytopenias, abnormal liver enzymes, and “aseptic” meningitis. When diagnosis is delayed, it is occasionally fatal. Currently, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique is the most rapid technique to confirm the clinical diagnosis. The infection is responsive to tetracyclines and chloramphenicol. In
