Članek prevprašuje presečišča folkloristike ter kritičnih dediščinskih študij, ki jih lahko folkloristke in folkloristi tvorno sooblikujejo. Izpostavljeno je dediščinjenje tistih folklornih fenomenov, katerih kontinuiteta je bila spodbujena s strokovnimi intervencijami. Na primeru vpisa metliških vuzemskih plesov in iger v Register nesnovne kulturne dediščine je prikazana vloga folkloristk in folkloristov tako pri raziskavah samega historičnega fenomena kot tudi v sodobnih dediščinskih postopkih.

Presence and Perspektive of Folklore and Folkloristics" (Tradiční kultura jako součást kulturního dědictví Evropy - Současnost a perspektivy folkloru a folkloristiky). Jednání probíhala v reprezentačních prostorách Pálffyho paláce. Zúčastnili se jí folkloristé a etnologové z devíti zemí (Bulharska, České republiky, Estonska, Maďarska, Německa, Norska, Rakouska, Slovenska a Slovinska).

Abstract In 1900, there were around one thousand folklorists writing about folk traditions in France. While some were “pioneers” endeavoring to establish a discipline scientifically, most of them just indulged their curiosity on a part-time basis. Abstract The establishment of the American Folklore Society (AFS) and the Journal of American Folklore (JAF) in the 1880s was in the midst of a series of federal laws excluding Chinese people from entering the United States, along with a wave of scientific racism that was also pervasive in American society. In light of the considerable changes in the discipline's canon catalysed by the Third Debate, it is surprising that there has been no sustained engagement with a large body of textbooks in over a decade. In the form of a lyric essay, this chapter interrogates the motives and methods of mainstream folklore scholarship. The author identifies a variety of factors that discourage folklorists from taking more expressive chances in order to understand the specialized style that has come to dominate folklore scholarship. This hyper-professionalization of folkloristic writing has, the author argues, led to what Benjamin Botkin once called “folklorists talking to themselves or folklore in vacuo.” In order to make folklore studies resonate with a broader audience, the author calls for folkloristic writing that is more imaginative and less thesis-driven, writing that invites the curious in rather than excluding them in the name of scholarly prestige.

Folklore has often perceived itself as a study of the marginalized, the non-elite, the vernacular, but folklorists have often sought out examples of excellence within the each genre. While folklorists have tried to show the extraordinariness of the commonplace by highlighting the moment of folkloric immanence, vignettes, as John Dorst describes them, have tended towards the opposite, the shockingly mundane, the small things. One might wonder what has been missed in the search for the moments of performative excellence that have traditionally been the focus of folklore research. What of the folklore of small things, the folklore that appears in unrecorded moments, just before or after the recorder is on or in spaces where we did not think to record in the first place because we were off the folklorist clock?

This chapter discusses the treatment of the Jewish identity of various composers by the Yiddish folklorist and music critic, Menachem Kipnis. It describes Kipnis as a small, energetic man with a soft but beautiful singing voice and considered one of the most popular Jewish folklorists of interwar Poland. It also looks into Kipnis' book World-Famous Jewish Musicians, a collection of biographies of nineteenth-century composers with a Jewish background. The chapter examines the contradictions and idiosyncrasies of World-Famous Jewish Musicians compared with Kipnis's other works. It seeks to understand the balance Kipnis struck between praise for Jewish composers and quasi-nationalist emphasis on their Jewishness on the one hand, and his work as a folklorist in Poland, collecting songs from traditional, Yiddish-speaking Jews on the other.

The article presents funeral traditions and customs reflected in Petre V. Ștefănucă’s works from the beginning of the 20th century, as discovered by the folklorist in the Bessarabian villages. The aspects that have been preserved until now are also mentioned. The author appreciates the way of capturing the details and encompassing the whole represented by these phenomena of the popular culture. Each stage of the burial custom is analyzed and explained.
