This dissertation examines the history of the Western Multistoried-Buildings garden (Xiyang lou) located within the Chinese imperial Garden of Round Brightness (Yuanming yuan) of the Qing dynasty. As a "Western-like" garden designed and cobuilt by the European Jesuits in China, the Western Multistoried-Buildings garden was unique in garden history. It provides a significant and unique case study of the cultural encounter between Chinese and European civilizations in the eighteenth century. The research reported in this thesis focuses on the communication between the visions of the Chinese emperor and the Western Jesuits during the construction of this European garden. The research demonstrates how Jesuit metaphysics fused with Chinese cosmology through the creation of the multiple jing, the bright views of the garden scenes, using the technique of the "line-method," which embodied the Chinese transformation of Western linear perspective. This research differs from the usual approach in history and cross-cultural studies that treats buildings and gardens as secondary objects re-presenting a priori or a posteriori ideas. It goes directly to the material context to analyze how the creation of a garden framed the minds of individuals who came from different cultures and religions. Such a "materialist" approach not only acts as a reflection of the Western metaphysical approach, but also attempts to initiate a new interpretative perspective that is closer to the poetic essence of the Chinese culture. As the Western Multistoried-Buildings garden demonstrates, there does exist a way by which cultural and religious conflicts are dissolved into the "round brightness" of cultural fusion, which in turn makes cultural differences shine.

Resumo:
From the last century, especially from the 1950s onward, many historical gardens in China have been repaired and restored. Although the aim was to preserve the cultural heritage, many of these gardens were modified during the conservation projects. This thesis focuses on one of the typical garden features, the rockwork. Like gardens, historic rockwork in China has often been transformed from a particular into a generic style. In view of this phenomenon, this thesis focuses on answering the following questions: How have the original appearance and states of rockwork been maintained in conservation projects? How can conservation practice be improved in order to accomplish more authentic restoration? Guided by these two main questions, this thesis aims to contribute to a more authentic restoration and conservation practice. At the beginning, with a critical review of the history of rockwork in China, evidence is shown that preferences in rockwork changed over time. Various trends and most common characteristics of different periods are also identified. The subsequent analysis of legislation and guidelines related to the conservation of rockwork reveal conservation principles during and since the twentieth century, which continue to develop and change up to the present day. An understanding of the various trends and conservation principles provides a solid basis for the evaluation of conservation projects. Four individual cases were then studied in depth to investigate the conservation treatments applied to historic rockwork and the influences on the retention of their original appearance and state. These case studies demonstrate that historic rockwork has been modified to various extents during the conservation process, its historic significance has been overlooked, and some have been restored based on current aesthetic standards. Even so, some of these projects are still considered as good examples to be followed. Based on the problems and good practices identified in the case studies, specific recommendations are finally provided, to prevent the repetition of past mistakes, and to guide and improve future conservation practices.

Hong Kong is facing an aging population problem in the coming years. This situation is especially appearing in the New Town such as Tseung Kwan O and Sha Tin. Therefore, healthcare facilities or healing landscape is an important design issue in the future. In the thesis, Haven of Hope Hospital is chosen to demonstrate the healing landscape design. It is a good site to provide an example of healing landscape for reference in the future. Haven of Hope Hospital is one of the hospitals in the Tseung Kwan O. It provides several different services in the local community such as Geriatrics and Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Care, Palliative Care and infirmary. These types of the service are very close to the quality of the environment. Therefore, healing landscape plays an important role in this type of hospital. At the same time, Tseung Kwan O is a new town, the main development is planning to provide more residential units now. That’s why, healthcare facilities are one of the important things for development in the future to fulfill the large amount of people. In the study, it shows that healing landscape is a medium for people to integrate the natural environment. It is a process to provide different level of healing effect to people such as stress reduction, relieving the pain and self mediation. In the thesis, relationship among the original hospital landscape, the patient character, and the types of building are found to figure out what healing landscape have to be designed. Some design concepts and theories provide suggestions and guidelines on designing the garden and choosing the plants. Some therapeutic programs can be considered to organize in the healing landscape so as to bring out the healing effect. Truthfully, the main purpose is to create a nice environment to upgrade the quality of life and overall well-being of people.

Resumo:
As a result of rapid proliferation of urbanization, there is an insufficient supply of green spaces in dense urban city while the population and living density are both very high. This insufficiency associates with a number of problems on both individual and community. Communal sky garden (CSG) thus turns into an alternative solution as a co-existence between building and vegetation within the same plot of land for the enjoyment of the occupants of the respective development. This study aims at examining the design elements which affect the social performance of CSG for high rise buildings in dense city. There are totally 25 number of residential developments which have the provision of CSG since the issuance of Joint Practice Note No.1 and No.2 in 2001. Eight of them have been selected for the Study. The sky garden design of these developments has been examined and analyzed from different perspectives which include building controls, on-site measurements and observations, questionnaire survey and interviews. Views from public, developers and design professional have also been collected to generate a holistic review on such provision. Several features which are unique to CSG has been identified. The most apparent one is the provision couples with the refuge floor while the layout is dictated by the typical floor plate. It thus imposes limitations on the design and the schedule of accommodations. Also, based on the design layout and characteristics, the eight selected ases have been classified and categorized into four CSG typologies, namely (i) typical type; (ii) linked-up type; (iii) duplex type; and (iv) balcony type. These typologies facilitate the review and analysis of the current provision of CSG. The findings from fieldworks have exhibited that people’s perception on CSG is positive. Its provision is highly supported and appreciated nevertheless of their infrequent use rate. When designing CSG, the considerations are slightly different from those designed at street or ground floor level. Greening is still considered as important which has been validated in the current Study; open views from CSG and its tranquil environment which are unique to the provision constitute the primary concerns of users when consider visiting the garden. These conditions offer an alternative space for residents of the respective development to relax and relieve stress. However, the role of CSG cannot be overemphasized; it, in fact, is complementary to the open space system by providing a garden at “doorstep” for residents particularly for those developments lacking competing facilities such as podium garden and nearby open space. Hence, the provision is not only environmentally sustainable, but also socially sustainable in terms of improving physical health and well-being of residents and their quality of life. This Study also offers a significant reference for the comprehensive design and in-depth understanding on the value and role of CSG in the built environment especially for high rise residential buildings in dense city. The collected findings and the deliverables provide a good reference in future CSG provision in Hong Kong.

Resumo:
A large amount of garden residential blocks were built in Shanghai in the 1930’s, which manifested the real estate surge of that time. These villas, which used to serve a single family (mainly for foreign expats in Shanghai), however, have been changed dramatically through the time, both socially and physically. Many of these old villas experienced the take over and invasion in the war time, process of socialization and subdivision in the 1950s and the chaotic period during the Cultural Revolution. The intricate property right situations and over-ridden housing condition make adaptive reuse difficult. Columbia Circle, as one of the most outstanding but obscure garden residential estates serving for foreign expats originally, mainly planned and constructed between 1928 and 1932 in succession, is a unique example to show the transition of the garden residential blocks in Shanghai. This thesis will focus on “Columbia Circle” to study the tracing of changes of its social fabric between the 1930’s and nowadays. Based on the historic study of the development plan and and current field survey, the research focuses on two aspects of the transition: one is the demographic composition of the community and the way of life; the other is the way of use of the villas and their property statues.

Yuanming Yuan è l’unico giardino Imperiale nella storia cinese, unisce giardini classici cinesi e giardini dell’Italia Rinascimentale e Barocca.

The Repulse Bay Cultural Landscape can be identified as a “Continuing Landscape” in the UNESCO cultural landscape categories. At the south end of the beach is the Hong Kong Life Saving Society Headquarters, Club House (HKLSS), and seafront Garden, which has evolved over the last fifty odd years. It continues to do so, and is highly acclaimed in Hong Kong for its water safely education and its recognition by the international community. Over the years, the HKLSS placed more than one hundred religiously related (Buddhism, Taoism and Chinese folklore) architectural elements including statues, memorial tablets, and steles, as well as pagoda and pavilion In this seafront Chinese style garden This site is used by a massive number of “stakeholders” including HKLSS members, local residents and tourists, etc. And the place is without proper management and maintenance because of lack of financial and expert support. Also, through lack of social awareness, the condition of some of the structures which may have heritage value is declining disintegrating badly. Because this place was mainly developed from the 50s onward, it is unlikely to be considered as a heritage site by conservation professionals. In order to identify this seafront property’s potential heritage value, the focus of research should be on discovering and recording the heritage value of the place. My dissertation aims to reveal and explain the physical aspect and related elements-architecture and space- of this seafront property, and the social aspect- achievement- of one of its major stakeholder (The Hong Kong Life Saving Society). I have produced a SWOT Analysis Report and Heritage Assessment (Using the heritage criteria of the Hong Kong Antiquation and Monument office) in order to identify the heritage value of this place, and explain why “Preventive Conservation” is necessary.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the behaviour of young Chinese girls toward luxury goods and to provide suggestions for the marketer when marketing products on the Chinese market.

The goal of this study was to see the differences in behaviour between the area of Hong Kong, Taiwan and China (Mainland), but also to identify toward which categories of luxury goods (perfume, leather goods, clothing) people were more favourable.

In order to get information for our thesis we used a qualitative approach (by doing a focus group) and a quantitative approach (by using questionnaire). Our sample can be described as girls aged from 20 to 25 and living in the area of Honk Kong, Taiwan and China (Mainland)

To retrieve information we focused on different variables intervening in the consumer behaviour such as perception, learning and memorisation, motivation and attitude. We investigate perception through, knowledge, symbolism and risks perceived, the learning and memorisation process were evaluate through information , the motivation and attitude were measured through the intention to buy.

As a result of this study we find out some similarities in behaviour in the different geographic areas investigated. These findings can lead to the glob-alization of some specific points of the marketing mix. However great dif-ferences between the regions also appeared and they should be taken in consideration in the marketing strategy in order to be successful.

This thesis considers the institutionalization of the concept of Contemporary Chinese Art. The main issue is drawn on the analysis of expressions of cultural distinctiveness and its link to the question of modernity. Mostly regarded as the manifestation of a globalized art, Chinese contemporary art conceals in fact a complex evolutionary process. The claim that a gap, or even a break-away, between the evolution of art in the Western World and China, initiated many debates. The study of the artistic movements involved in the ideological emancipation process, after the death of Chairman Mao in 1976, (Xingxing, bawu yundong), shows a split between supporters of an artistic activism on the one side and partisans of a formal approach taking better account of developments in Western art on the other. Likewise, art perceived as an echo to the many changes sweeping the country since the 1990s has stimulated controversies on the role of social contest in contemporary art - through the return to realism (Cynical Realism, Gaudy Art) or the specificity of the revolutionary experience (Political Pop). Follows the emphasis on environmental data (Beijing) entertained by critics (Li Xianting, Gao Minglu), deeply condemned by artists and critics who were living abroad (Fei Dawei, Huang Yongping) ; also, there persists a rebellious stance (Ai Weiwei, Gao Shiming) aiming beyond the limits of denouncing Western attitude

This thesis goes through the changes that occur in the architecture’s knowledge in modern China, observing the relation between architectural creation and the historical background. Taking into account the diachronic differences between the two cultures, this study analyzes the interpenetration of that knowledge between western countries and China as well as its influence upon Chinese architectural and artistic creation. Modern architecture started spreading over China from late XIXth century, together with the industrial development. In early XXth century, a new approach to modern historiography appears referring to the west. Some complex issues referring to ideology and regarding historiographical methods started to emerge through the first modern studies on Chinese traditional architecture. This thesis, based on such an historical background, analyzes the architectural projects and concepts in order to enlighten the researches, quite personal, made by the Chinese architects and historians and to emphasize their own interpretations of the key concepts on this field. The statements and practices that pave the way of architecture from the 1950s to the 1990s bring up the question of the evolution occurring in the architectural history. Chinese architecture draws its inspiration from abroad mixing it with the tradition established during the Chinese « red years ». After the opening policy and economical reforms were settled, architecture faces a great urban development. Around the end of the 1990s, some Chineseavant-garde architects started a new way aiming at re-interprating the tradition within the discipline itself

Istraživanje obuhvata analizuistorijskog razvoja, filozofsko – teorijske osnove estetike vrta, morfologiju i tipologiju arhitektonskog prostora kao i analizu većegbroja sačuvanih vrtova Ming i Ćing perioda.

The thesis analyzes the circumstances of the change in the motivations of Chinese students of french. After the historical description of the development of the teaching of french and teaching french in China, we focus on the analysis the issue that affects the quality of the french language instruction: the motivation of the taught. The special feature of this research is the application of motivational approaches in acquiring the third language (ATL) for the first time in the Chinese context of the teaching of french. As a result of the adaptation of the model AMTB of Gardner, 184 questions were question Bank for the random production of the investigation. We have selected a Chinese public University as place of empirical research and three passages for monitoring the change in motivation: at the beginning of the semester (starting point), before the end of the semester and after the holidays. More than 180 students of the french department participated in this series of surveys. In the form of a quantitative comparison, summarizes the motivational influence of natural, educational and family factors such as the sexe of students, the family situation, the preparation of the french course, the role of class and the reguliar evaluation system to better understand the internal logic of the change in motivation in acquisition of french

Australian writer Brian Castro is the author of ten novels, among which Birds of Passage (1989), After China (1992), The Garden Book (2005) and The Bath Fugues (2009) – the four works at the core of the present study. Owing to his Chinese origins and his elaborate style, literary criticism in Australia has labelled him an ethnic writer whose novels are deemed overly – and overtly – complex and opaque. Our thesis aims at establishing why Castro’s works, precisely because of their sophistication, deserve an alternate approach. We start with a historical survey of Australia’s “national” and “multicultural” literature. This will bring to light how Castro, being well aware of his nation’s love for social, cultural and literary categorizations, strives to break free from them. This desire permeates the whole of his literary endeavour, and our analysis borrows from several traditions of literary criticism to determine the characteristics of Castro’s unique aesthetics. To achieve this, the musical form of the fugue is a particularly powerful analytic tool, in that this musical genre allows us to better understand the elaborate mechanisms at work in the way the author approaches, among others, characterization, plot and diegesis.Far from the easy reads that Australia’s literature market promotes, Brian Castro’s unique works of fiction are an invitation to embrace destabilization in order to examine a prose whose poetic force will help the reader liberate themselves from established racial, cultural and literary categories
