Over the past 14 years, since the discovery of the first gene for breast cancer (BRCA1), cancer genetics has become an increasingly important part of the workload of clinical genetics services, now accounting for approximately half of all referrals. Such referrals may occur for a number of different reasons – where a healthy patient is concerned that their family history of cancer places them at a significant risk of cancer themselves; where a patient with cancer is worried about the risk of cancer to their relatives; where a clinician feels that a patient has a strong family history that sugg

Genetic, and indeed genomic, imprinting does occur in humans. This is manifest at the level of the genome, the individual chromosome, subchromosomal region or fragile site, or the single locus. The best evidence at the single gene level comes from a consideration of familial tumour syndromes. Chromosomal imprinting effects are revealed when uniparental disomy occurs, as in the Prader-Willi syndrome and doubtless other sporadic, congenital anomaly syndromes. Genomic imprinting is manifest in the developmental defects of hydatidiform mole, teratoma and triploidy. Fragile (X) mental retardation s

71 Background: In oncology practice, there are increasing numbers of patients for whom genetic testing is recommended by the National Cancer Care Network (NCCN), including all metastatic and high-risk localized prostate cancer patients. However, there is a critical shortage of genetics services providers. Acuity for these consults can be high, particularly in the context of a treatment related decision. We hypothesized that nurses, particularly advanced practice nurses (APNs), can provide a workforce within VA that can address genetic testing and genetic care needs of prostate cancer patients.

The majority of current genetic algorithms (GAs), while inspired by natural evolutionary systems, are seldom viewed as biologically plausible models. This is not a criticism of GAs, but rather a reflection of choices made regarding the level of abstraction at which biological mechanisms are modeled, and a reflection of the more engineering-oriented goals of the evolutionary computation community. Understanding better and reducing this gap between GAs and genetics has been a central issue in an interdisciplinary project whose goal is to build GA-based computational models of viral evolution. It was only a matter of time before the portmanteau term “genethics” would be coined and a whole field within bioethics delineated. The term can be dated back at least to 1984 and the work of James Nagle, who claims credit for inventing the word, which he takes “to incorporate the various ethical implications and dilemmas generated by genetic engineering with the technologies and applications that directly or indirectly affect the human species.” In Nagle’s phrase, “Genethic issues are instances where medical genetics and biotechnology generate ethical problems that warrant societal deliberati
