We compare the price elasticity of import demand in the destination markets of Italian exports to the price elasticity in the destination markets of the other main euro-zone countries' exports. We use the elasticities of substitution across varieties estimated for each destination market by Broda, Greenfield and Weinstein (2006). We find that Italy exports to markets that have, on average, lower price elasticity than the markets to which France, Germany and Spain sell their exports. The result is mainly driven by the motor vehicle and other transport equipment sectors. Net of these two industr

Abstract During the past decade, poor documentation and computer software containing outdated price parameters used to screen and "correct" data taken from U.S. export declarations resulted in significant overestimation of official U.S. hardwood lumber export volumes. In the year prior to their correction, U.S. hardwood lumber exports to Europe were about half the officially reported volume. Although official statistics indicated red oak was the most important species traded, the new data indicate that, in fact, white oak exports in 1988 were actually three times red oak exports. In this thesis, existence of intra-OIZ and intra-industry knowledge spillovers in Ankara and Istanbul is tested by the help of an export decision function. As an essential part of this, it examines the net foreign earnings accruing to the Irish economy after deducting the profit outflows and payments for imported inputs that were associated with each sector’s exports. AbstractThe Dutch Republic underwent a process of state formation, accelerated economic growth and military reforms during the Eighty Years War. In particular between 1585 and 1621, Dutch merchant-entrepreneurs built up a burgeoning arms industry and sector of arms exports. These exports required a system of passports, still an under-researched theme in current literature, organized by the States-General and admiralties in order to support exports to neutral and allied states, but to forestall these did not fall into enemy hands. In particular, the system of passports shows how merchants, acti

AbstractThe boom ended in 2007. Although export growth slowed down as early as 2000, that trend was not very serious for the economy because the growth of net foreign earnings did not slow down, due to the changing sectoral composition of exports. The growth of net foreign earnings slowed down eventually in 2005, primarily because foreign-owned manufacturing companies stopped growing. This would probably have brought an end to the boom in the economy were it not for the housing boom. The housing boom and its associated financial inflows kept the economic boom going for another couple of years.

Abstract It is well known that stainless steels of the 300 series are not safe in stagnant, "living", sea water. The reason for this is as yet not fully understood. Their behaviour can be related to high values of the electrochemical potential at which these steels are brought when immersed in "quiet" conditions, as opposed to high velocity conditions. Indeed, electrochemical potentials as high as + 350 mV/AgCl have been observed to prevail. As most usual stainless steels present pitting potential in the region of + 100/ + 300 mV/AgCl, they are prone to pitting, or likewise to crevice corrosio

Propolis is a natural product with a complex chemical composition, which varies largely by geographical area and plant species visited by bees. Although the propolis collected from the same geographical area has similarities in chemical composition, specific compounds are also attested, due to the local flora. Over the years, numerous studies have been carried out on the chemical composition of propolis, but for the moment there is no common procedure for obtaining and analyzing propolis extracts, which makes it difficult to use the product in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

With the ever-increasing level of integration in world economy, neighborhood relations become much more important for two-fold reasons. Firstly, neighbor countries are most important trade partners in general and secondly they form a bridge with the other countries. So, while good relations with neigbors have positive externalities for the trade with other countries, bad relations with neigbors mean reduced trade with other countries of a specific region. The main purpose of this study is to analyze Turkey's export potential with the neighbor countries with the help of the gravity model. For t

In this study, composition and volume of goods traded will be analyzed by using proportions and trends, to determine the level of commercial partnership of Turkey, Iran and Germany with central Asian countries. Moreover, Turkey's relative position against Iran and Germany will be determined and introduced by using technological structure of export and import data. In the study covering the years of 1999-2008, data for the foreign trade at the level of the SITC 2 was collected from COMTRADE. According to the findings, approximately 70% of Turkey’s exports to Central Asia occur lower and

The interest of specific Latin American economies in the successful completion of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) negotiations is very heterogeneous. A list of relevant factors to explain such divergences would include geographic orientation of trade, composition of exports, degree of openness of the economy, level of protection and commitment to trade liberalization. Success in the FTAA negotiations depends crucially on the convergence of views between the United States and MERCOSUR, and especially Brazil, in relation to access of goods to their respective domestic markets.

The purpose of this paper is to apply new methodologies to analyze the history of and future opportunities for structural transformation in the Caribbean. We first look at the composition of exports from the Caribbean, and show that the region is specialized in relatively unsophisticated, "poor-country" export products, and this is not simply a consequence of their small size or specialization in tourism and financial services.

[Extract from Executive Summary] This work package builds on a broad brush scaling of the volume, composition and geographical disposition of inshore sector landings to inform examination of market linkages, identify supply chain weaknesses, and explore opportunities to increase producer prices – focusing on a small number of case study areas. Analysis has sought to identify opportunities and mechanisms by which the inshore sector might counter the disadvantages it routinely suffers due to its small-scale of operation and its geographic peripherality.

This study assesses the interaction between climate change and agricultural trade policies. We distinguish between two dimensions of agricultural trade policy: market insulation and subsidy levels. Building on the previous work of Tsigas, Frisvold and Kuhn (1997) we find that, in the presence of current levels of agricultural subsidies, increased price transmission --as called for under the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture-- reduces global welfare in the wake of climate change. This is due to the positive correlation between productivity changes and current levels of agricultural support

The Mekong River is the largest river in Southeast Asia, arising in the mountains of China, flowing along the border of Myanmar and Laos, and through Laos and Cambodia into Vietnam; 80% of the Mekong Delta lies within Vietnam. The biodiversity of the Delta and southern Vietnam as a whole depends on the cycles of the river. The Mekong Delta wetlands are highly productive and valuable for both use and non-use reasons. Unfortunately, they are also highly threatened by human activities resulting in degraded water quality, change in species composition, and pollution. This Vietnam-focused case stud

The composition, diversity and abundance varied in fruit harvested in different geographical locations and suggests a potential link between location and the type and rate of postharvest diseases that develop in each country. The global core microbiome of apple fruit was determined and found to be represented by several beneficial microbial taxa and accounted for a large fraction of the fruit microbial community. In order to thrive, small economies like Belize tend to depend heavily on the external sector to compensate for their limited domestic market. With a population of less than 350,000, Belize is too small to provide a profitable domestic market for producers of goods and services. Considering this reality, successive Belizean governments have recognized that international trade is critical to ensure a sustainable economic development. While trade remains a top priority for Belize, preferential treatment of its exports to main markets - the US and the European Union - is progressively eroding. On
