At the interface of land and sea, and at the interface of nature and society, coastal areas are complex and very attractive territories where diverse uses and practices generate many conflicts and degradations. There is now a global consensus on the need to preserve these areas and their biodiversity. For several decades, Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (ICOM) has been advocated internationally as the approach to address the problems encountered in coastal areas. The approach is a key paradigm for the sustainable development of coastal zones and it tries to reconcile the use of resources with the conservation of biodiversity. A large number of projects have been implemented around the world and many human and financial resources have been mobilized for this purpose. But ICOM implementation and evaluation remain much of a challenge. This last point is widely recognized as an indispensable tool in project and program planning and management. This thesis therefore proposes a methodology for the development of indicators for the monitoring and evaluation of GIML initiatives, which makes it possible to appreciate the gaps between ambitions for environmental protection, economic development and social welfare. Underpin the approach and the actions carried out on the ground. To do so, four case studies in the Caribbean were selected. These include the Saba Marine Park, the Soufrière Marine Management Area (Saint Lucia), the Nature Seekers Group (Trinidad) and the ‘Contrat de baie’ of Fort-de-France (Martinique). These experiences are all cited as success stories in terms of integrated coastal management and as examples to follow. But do they really respond to the objectives of the approach? The proposed analysis grid provides a further reading of the results of these processes and provides more general lessons for the implementation of GIML

The thesis is an exploration of how young women are embedded within and (re)construct discourses of gendered identity within consumerist/capitalist culture, in relation to popular music. Theoretical analysis is juxtaposed throughout with interviews I conducted with 46 young women aged between 11 and 18 years old which took place in schools and a youth centre in Manchester and Salford. The importance placed on the interviews reflects my attempt to privilege young women as the primary focus of the research. The interviews were a means of situating young women's discursive engagement with popular culture in relation to gender identities. The main body of the thesis begins with an exploration of how young women are situated in relation to discourses of social class, ethnicity and sexuality, including how social class connects with young women's lives in relation to popular culture, how to theorise blackness and whiteness, and ways of opening up discussions of both heterosexuality and homosexuality. I then widen the remit of the thesis, by considering where the young women I interviewed are situated in relation to discourses of femininity, utilising theories of the 'male gaze', and of representations of the feminine in popular culture. How these young women's lives relate to feminisms, and feminist work, particularly in relation to structural inequalities, equal rights and sexual behaviour, are then investigated. Finally, the thesis analyses the extent to which the young women's talk in the interviews constructs themselves and others as individual consumers, and examines how this may impact on young women's lives. The thesis concludes how young women's accounts are embedded in a discourse of individualism. Societal structures which help to construct or maintain gendered, racial or sexual inequalities are often ignored in the young women's talk, since the individual as consumer is situated at the centre of their talk. Forms of feminism which attempt to explore inequalities beyond those of 'equal rights' then fail to impact on the young women as an audience. The young women's talk demonstrates that inequalities continue to exist in their lives, and yet popular culture does little to provide solutions or even acknowledgement of these inequalities. I suggest that since the analysis of the thesis has indicated that available feminisms have often failed to engage with young women in meaningful ways, in the future feminists need to highlight ways of challenging inequalities which young women encounter in their day-to-day lives.

The New Girl is a collection of poems in which the poet assumes a direct, unfeigned voice. These rhythmic poems cover the deeply personal to the universal and social. The body is presented as a record of experiences both good and bad. Feminist issues pertainingto marriage, work, and sexuality are explored. Whether the poem is about a personal relationship or some aspect of society, it is likely to be multi-dimensional and suggest a duality. Overall, the poems are rooted in the spiritual and attempt to relate, with holistic honesty, a sense of reverence for the impure parts of life.

About a Girl is a coming-of-age memoir set in Montana, a place that I yearned to belong to, but was also desperate to flee. My girlhood was in some ways idyllic--I was a bright child, the oldest of six, and the bulk of my early education took place in rural one-room schools. When school was out, I ran free and wild in the relative safety of several ranches and farms that my stepdad worked on over the years. But as I entered adolescence, I began experimenting with drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, and other high-risk behaviors. This memoir explores themes of family, identity, isolation, and longing for transformation. My shifting relation to self is mirrored in my shifting relation to place, as my family moves to increasingly isolated locales during my girlhood; as I bounce between my mom's and dad's homes during a turbulent adolescence; and as I seek to establish independence by moving to Denver as soon as I graduate high school. Like many rural kids, I was ill prepared for the urban existence I'd idealized, and once I was on my own, I quickly progressed from being evicted from my first apartment to living on the streets. By using techniques such as dialogue, characterization, and scene building to give my memories narrative form, I seek to reconcile the girl I was with the woman I have become. In exploring the distance between these two selves, I also attempt to make peace with the stories I tell about who I am and how I came to be. For some of us, it is only by nearly destroying ourselves that we are able to find out who we are, and only by leaving home that we are able to make our way back.

Research conducted during the 1990s revealed that video games increasingly represent the medium through which children are first exposed to technology, that early gaming can enhance future technological literacy, and that girls tend to play video games less frequently than boys. These findings preceded efforts by feminist entrepreneurs, followed by established video game producers, to develop ‘girl games.’ Such ‘girl-centred,’ ‘girl-friendly,’ and girl-targeted video games now represent a lucrative branch of the contemporary video game industry. In this project, I utilized a multi-method approach to explore how ‘the ideal teen girl’ is re/constructed in three tween-airned ‘girl games.’ My discourse analysis of the ‘dominant’ messages in the games includes an examination of various available feminine subject positions, and how ‘race,’ class, and (hetero)sexuality are implicated in these positions. My analysis of semi-structured interviews that I conducted with eight tween girls provides insight into their everyday readings of the ‘girl games.’ Unlike earlier research that framed girls as passive recipients of ‘damaging’ messages included in gendered texts, my findings suggest that the girls in my study engaged in active and diverse readings of the interactive texts. The multiple ways in which the girls recognized, identified with, resisted, and/or reworked elements of the feminine subject positions demonstrated their management of such contradictory images of ideal girlhood. According to my analysis, while several girls engaged in sceptical readings, none of the girls ultimately rejected the video game messages, or linked them to the wider social order in which they are produced, and which they work to re/produce. My research also revealed that the girls’ identification of and with the subject positions was shaped and augmented by knowledge they had gained from previous exposure to associated transmediated representations (television, movies, music, and fashion products). My research suggests that while ‘the ideal teen girl’ re/constructed for tween garners reflects contemporary notions of girlhood, as she is active and capable, she reaffirms Western standards of hegemonic femininity. The rules of play, beauty ideals, behaviours, and priorities of consumption included in the games work to re/construct White, middle class, heterogendered ‘teen femininity’ as normal and ideal.

The Japanese state has long attempted to control the choices and behaviors of women through campaigns of moral suasion and social management. These campaigns have varied in terms of their efficacy but have all endeavored to encourage women to embrace the “good wife, wise mother” ideals espoused in ryosai kenbo ideology, often for the purported good of the nation. Leading up to WWII, these campaigns were effective in undermining the Modern Girl and eventually squeezing her out of existence. The bursting of Japan’s economic bubble in the early 1990s, however, created the Post-Modern Girl, who, like the Modern Girl, has particular attitudes about marriage, children, work, and sexuality. Unlike the Modern Girl, however, the Post-Modern Girl has survived nearly three decades since her emergence. This thesis examines these two figures and their converging and diverging trajectories and explores the limits of state control in the lives of modern Japanese women.

Abstract : This research deals with the representation of gender in television. Its general objective is to investigate the portrayal of women in the television series Grey s Anatomy. The focus is specifically on four women, two of whom are heterosexual, namely, Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang, and two of whom are homosexual, namely, Calliope Torres and Arizona Robbins. The purpose is to verify how the four aforementioned characters are presented in terms of their private and professional lives. Aspects such as the portrayal of heterosexual and homosexual relationships, the deconstruction of traditional roles, and the relevance of the series for today s society are taken into account when carrying out the analysis, which considers specific moments from the series and their connection with feminist and media studies, as proposed by bell hooks (1996), Adrienne Rich (1980), Judith Butler (1999), David Gauntlett (2002) among others. In addition, studies regarding television series are discussed as well. Based on the evidences encountered, it can be said that Grey s Anatomy attempts to portray women s different concerns, regarding career, family, and sexual orientation. Moreover, the series is generally recognized for attempting to deconstruct patriarchal values, which is still a relevant issue for the feminist movement today.

Osteoporosis affects half of all women over the age of fifty, but can be prevented through proper nutrition and exercise early in life. Few studies have been conducted that document positive gains in knowledge about osteoporosis prevention in young girls and no research has been completed in which osteoporosis education is delivered by peers in children. A 3-A-Day™ of dairy peer education program was developed by local Girl Scouts with the purpose of teaching other Girl Scouts about the importance of calcium intake and weight-bearing activities in the prevention of osteoporosis, overweight, and hypertension. Peer educators had significant increases in their overall knowledge of dairy (p<0.001) and self-efficacy related to 3-A-Day™ (p<0.05) after teaching peer education programs. Program participants had significant improvements in knowledge of calcium-rich foods (p<0.001) and weight-bearing activities (p<0.001). Participants were able to identify the recommended number of dairy servings per day (p<0.01). Although parents indicated that their daughters' knowledge increased after participation in the peer education program, parents' ratings of knowledge were not significantly related with daughters' ratings. Qualitative evaluation indicated that these Girl Scouts enjoyed serving as peer educators. This research supports the importance of osteoporosis education in young girls and demonstrates positive outcomes of peer education for both educators and program participants.

The sculptured tableaux on wheels, conceived through the properties of carved wood and found-objects, also function as miniature puppet theatres. These are wheeled into the performance arena at relevant moments to be animated by myself, with jazz artist, Athalie Crawford, at times accompanying the performance. Thereafter, the audience is invitedto view the constellation of tableaux as an art work, fixed as an arrangement of sculptures to which the performance has given a framework for presentation and interpretation.

Evolution of a Smart Girl is a collection of short stories that chronicles the evolution of the modern American female. The stories are arranged in three parts: "Dirty Barbie & Breakable Boys" focuses on adolescent relationships between boys and girls; "Some Things Can't Be Unbroken" centers on Maggie and Charlie Copper's marriage after Maggie is diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of twenty-five; and "Of Apples and Broken Scabs" presents four stories about four very different women who experience heartbreak in love, friendship, and lust. This work explores the ways in which a girl's interactions with others shape her into the young woman she becomes. Through same-sex friendships, romantic relationships, and sibling rivalries, the women in these stories experience intellectual and sexual awakenings.

This paper explores an emerging genre of the female hero archetype that is rooted in Joseph Campbell’s traditional definition and exemplified by Buffy Summers of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kara “Starbuck” Thrace of Battlestar Galactica. As representations of the female hero within this genre, they reimagine pre-existing stereotypes, such as the female victim and the male hotshot pilot, and then pursue a hero’s journey of death and resurrection that is unique because of their gender. This new trend is the result of third-wave feminism and necessary for the further development of feminist literary works, particularly within the realm of Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

Gender has a strong impact on individual’s entire life course. However, this impact is also shaped by the culture and society the individual lives in. For girls (and for boys) the consequences of being of certain gender may be positive as well as negative. This master’s thesis focuses on the factors that contribute to the well-being of girls, and more generally, on how girlhood is experienced. These factors are divided according to the biopsychosocial approach, but it is acknowledged that girlhood is constructed culturally and socially too, which guides the research process. Research context is here seen as ‘geography’ according to the theory deliberated in the book Geographies of Girlhood(2005), edited by Paula Bettis and Natalie Adams, in which several authors speak for the diversity of girlhood. Research on girls’ empowerment is part of girlhood studies aiming at empowering the girls holistically; through empowerment girls are equipped to act upon their own well-being. In the study girlhood and girl empowerment are observed through the lens of biopsychosocial theory, taking into consideration the girls’ living environment, i.e. the geographical context (Western, North American society). It is argued that many of the biopsychosocial challenges of girlhood might best be solved with empowerment theory turned into practice. The theoretical discussion on girlhood and girl empowerment is supported by a case study of one of the North American girl empowerment organizations, GENaustin,Texas, where ethnographic data was collected. Based on the analysis of the data, the researcher evaluates how successful the project of empowering the girls was and also, what were the challenges people working for this organization needed to cope with. The conclusions drawn from the theoretical consideration and the case study show that the empowerment of girls is of vital importance for their well-being and further, that in order to get good results, the geographical perspective should be recognized; this became obvious when analyzing the challenges that the organization needed to solve, such as the homogeneity of the local girl groups and prerequisites for funding set by the sponsors

This comparative study of Girl Guiding in Malaya, India, Nigeria, and Australia examines the dynamics of engagement between Western and non-Western women participants. Originally a program to promote feminine citizenship only to British girls, Guiding became tied up with efforts to maintain, transform, or build different kinds of imagined communities—imperial states, nationalists movements, and independent nation states. From the program’s origins in London in 1909 until 1960 the relationship of the metropole and colonies resembled a complex web of influence, adaptation, and agency. The interactions between Girl Guide officialdom headquartered in London, Guide leaders of colonized girls, and the colonized girls who joined suggest that the foundational ideology of Guiding, maternalism, became a common language that participants used to work toward different ideas and practices of civic belonging initially as members of the British Empire and later as members of independent nations.

In this paper I undertake an investigation of the meaning of sexual difference for Tiqqun’s theory of the Young Girl, which describes a commodified subjectivity in the neoliberal age. Tiqqun’s claim, that Young Girl is not to be understood as a gendered concept but rather as a détournement of the capitalist girl archetype, is put in relation to Jennifer Boyds development of their theory. According to Boyd’s interpretation of Young Girl as an embodied, gendered subjectivity, she can resist the control of the Empire by transforming from non-agency to pure agency, the latter being the state Boyd coins Strange Girl. In order to understand the radical notions that seem to follow from interpreting Young Girl in terms of gendered subjectivity, I apply Paul B. Preciado’s theory of techno-gender in the pharmacopornographic era to Tiqqun and Boyd respectively. Preciado’s theory offers a way of addressing Young Girl as a specific embodied subject and holder of a potentia gaudendi, an orgasmic potential that is either exploiting or being exploited depending on the bearers techno-gender. To conclude, this essay offers up a re-reading of Young Girl as being the exploited techno femininity that transform, via molecular gender and sex-hacking, into Strange Girl and orgasmic agency. Thereby she performs an actual, and not symbolical, resistance against the biopower performed by the Empire.

Abstract : This research discusses the poetry and music of Gil Scott-Heron as toolsof resistance. In the process of analyzing his work as historical counternarratives,a dialogue was established with some considerations fromAmiri Baraka and Kodwo Eshun. To discuss the ways in which hismusic and poetry fused into a black vernacular technique-technology,and how such fusion was extremely important in the writing of manychapters of the history of African-Americans, some ideas from RayvonFouché, Larry Neal, and Baraka were used. The music of Scott-Heron isinterpreted as PhonoFiction by adapting certain thoughts from Eshun. The correspondences between black speech and black music in the workof Scott-Heron were also analyzed using concepts created by StephenHenderson. Lastly, through an analysis of his work it was concluded thathe developed a poetics of the immediate, in that, his work instigatesimmediate action from African-Americans in their collective strugglefor equality and freedom.

The twin aim of this thesis is to (1) enlarge the field of girl studies at a conceptual level, to as to include the non-western girl, and (2) to develop a detailed case history of the girl in Hong Kong.  In order to identify what is distinctive about the everyday life of these girls I focus on three areas of experience – sex education in secondary school, made-for-teens romance films and teenage lifestyle magazines.  Particularly, I highlight how the questions of ethnicity, tradition and religion play a greater part in the everyday life of girls in Hong Kong than they do in the life of the girls considered by Driscoll's study.  It is the major claim of this thesis that girl studies as it is presently practised is western-centric and its outlook needs to be broadened to include the non-western world.  The significance of this thesis lies in the findings of the various form of heterosexuality in different social fields, which provides different space for girls to live in the present.  However, this thesis also finds out that the argument of the non-correlation between the female body and the constitution of femininity is not sufficient to the conception of girlhood.  This is because, as this thesis has indicated, the concept of Hong Kong girls cannot get rid of the shadow of the theories of modern subjectivity, in which the construction of the girl is in opposition to, or defined otherwise than, the mature, independent woman. In a long run, it is important to strengthen the power of 'becoming' in the construction of the concept of the girl in gender studies and cultural studies.

For a woman of her age, thirty-seven, freshly divorced, she has, to her mind, not solved the problem of her sex very well. So now her work in the escort business all those years ago will be used against her. This warning is in a note from her lawyers. She is sitting cross-legged, trying to warm up, in a book-sized patch of morning sunlight on her bunk, in a fetid cell meant for five but with thirty crammed in. She has earphones in, with twelve bass-heavy tunes on a continuous loop. It is hard for her sometimes to drum out the hum of the lovemaking, man-hating, babyyearning and fatal stabbings of the women around her - all day long. It is just like being free in the real world outside. The letter is typewritten, but has a handwritten salutation, "Dear Soraya," as if to convince her of its authenticity; and her existence.

This study considered how youth relate, connect, and identify with Nature by exploring how Girl Scouts describe their ecological identities. The purpose of this project was to introduce reflection on ecological identity as a reflective tool for living in Nature, to learn about youth connectedness to and identification with Nature, to utilize arts-based research, and to contribute to the scholarly field of girls in adventure education. Thirty-four youth aged 14 to 16 participated in the pilot and research project phases of the study. The study was a descriptive and exploratory research project, utilizing the methodologies of case study and action research. Data collection methods were anecdote circle, survey, and art creation. Survey results indicate that development of the ecological self can be grown. Three themes emerged from artistic cartography on special places in Nature, including coming of age, earth grief or loss, and summer camp. A feminist, reflexive lens guided the work, culminating in the formulation of a four-point transformation agenda for ecological identity at camps. The four recommendations are that camp administrators and educators: (1) promote a participatory relationship with phenomena through direct experience, (2) expand perceptual experience for reflection, (3) interrogate power and marginality, and (4) advance bioregional thinking and active community citizenship. Future research could investigate the efficacy of implementations of the agenda at camps. New studies should recruit for greater participant diversity and examine how Nature connectedness is defined and developed for individuals without access to green spaces and places.

In-depth interviews were conducted with 14 adolescent girls (7 sister pairs) between the ages of 13 and 18 years to examine disclosure between adolescent sisters. The content of disclosures between sisters focused on relationships, particularly those with boys, family, and peers. Participants described childhood relationships as play-oriented, whereas adolescent relationships were marked by less overall interaction but more talk. They identified their sisters' ability to understand, be nonjudgmental, and be trustworthy as facilitating disclosure. The possibility that a sister may breach confidentiality through gossip or tattling, however, may limit disclosure. Participants perceived disclosure to bring them closer, to help them understand each other, and to highlight differences between them. Although disclsoure was perceived to be important, participants also valued companionship and playfulness in their relationships Perspectives and opinions of each sister within a dyad were generally congruent. Findings suggested an association between disclosure and closeness. Directions for future research are suggested

This is a qualitative study of the two biggest blogs in Sweden, blondinbella.se and kissies.se. The purpose of this study is to find out which characteristics can be found that represent social class and gender, and from that perspective, what image of being a young girl is forwarded to the readers of these blogs. The media debate on the two blogs is ongoing and of special interest are the two writers of these blogs, Isabella Löwengrip and Alexandra Nilsson. With the help of social class and gender theories I analyze the content of the two blogs and try to distinguish which themes are dominant. The result part is divided from those themes that consider shopping, bodily self-esteem and choices. A predominating characteristic on the blogs is the emphasis on the self, the individual experience, and how all that is happening is related to the bloggers themselves. What in the beginning appeared to be two similar fashionblogs, has turned out to be embedding more diversity and hidden social mechanisms than was first apparent. How the bloggers relate to their everyday life, their settings and to critique and ideals, is in big parts shaped by their social class. Another conclusion is that the commercial side of the blogs in large aspects shapes what is written and this affects the subjective total experience of the blogs

Aquatic hypoxia, or low dissolved oxygen, is a growing environmental concern and has detrimental effects on many fishes. Research on fish responses to hypoxia includes whole animal studies as well as organ culture systems. In this thesis, the gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, was used to determine the interaction between hypoxic exposure and four common euthanasia techniques on selected blood and gill variables and to develop an in vitro gill incubation system. Euthanasia techniques had differential effects on blood and gill, with the common fish anesthetic MS-222 having the greatest effects, but none altered the response to hypoxia. During the development of gill culture, the highest gill viability was measured in isosmotic seawater medium and shorter incubation times. This study provides insight into the applicability of different euthanasia techniques in hypoxia research, as well as preliminary observations on an incubation system for isolated gills.

Child marriage, usually regarded as an issue pertaining to the non-‘developed’ parts of the world, can still be found in the United States (US), though efforts to combat it shape foreign policy goals. Is child marriage represented as a ‘problem’ in the same way internally as externally, and how do human rights play a role? Using Bacchi’s “What’s the Problem Represented to be?” approach, the problem representations emerge, showing that child marriage functions as a ‘solution’ to welfare ‘problems’ in national policy, as an obstacle to economic prosperity in foreign policy; and as a ‘foreign’ culture ‘problem’ in immigration policy. Postcolonial feminist theory’s “Third World Girl” allows for a deeper understanding of some of the subjectivities these representations entail, and the biopolitical nature of the assumptions which underlie these problem representations are explored through Foucault’s theoretical work on sexuality and production.
