Resumo:
Le projet consiste à retracer la postérité du grand théologien du Moyen Âge tardif, Jean Gerson (1363-1429) aussi bien dans le milieu protestant que chez les penseurs catholiques du XVIème siècle. Homme d’église, éducateur, poète, penseur du premier ordre et acteur majeur dans l’histoire politique et religieuse de la France, il n’a pas reçu toute l’attention qu’il mérite. Le premier objectif de la thèse consiste ainsi à sortir le nom de Gerson de l’ombre en mettant en évidence son influence au-delà du XVème siècle, ce qui n’a pas été fait auparavant. Visant à surmonter les clivages religieux et nationaux, cette étude présente les traits majeurs de son influence à travers la multiplicité des usages et des interprétations de sa pensée dont les diverses composantes s’articulent différemment au fil du temps. L’approche intégrale de la thèse cherche à combler un manque historiographique puisque la postérité de Gerson, parfois considérée dans ses diverses régions, n’a pas encore fait objet d’étude dans sa globalité. Comme l’attitude envers l’autorité de Gerson fut largement tributaire des conflits religieux qui agitèrent l’Europe, sa présence posthume dépendit surtout des objectifs polémiques et des prises de positions idéologiques de ceux qui trouvaient en lui une source d’inspiration. En conséquence, la thèse est organisée chronologiquement, confessionnellement, ainsi que géographiquement. Afin de fournir au lecteur l’arrière-plan historique précédant immédiatement la Réforme, l’étude commence après le Concile de Constance. D’un point de vue dénominationnel, la thèse est divisée, de façon relativement égale, entre les réceptions protestante et catholique, à l’exception de la postérité de Gerson en Angleterre et en Écosse qui constitue un chapitre à part. L’étude révèle des tendances dans sa réception touchant à l’humanisme, aux théologies systématique et pastorale, au mysticisme dévotionnel, le droit et l’historiographie, laissant de côté sa pensée conciliariste
The project consists in tracing the legacy of the great late medieval theologian Jean Gerson (1363-1429) both in Protestant circles and among Catholic thinkers of the 16th century. A churchman, educator, poet, humanist, preacher and a first-class thinker, he has not received the attention he deserves. The dissertation hopes to achieve precisely this primary goal: to take Gerson’s name out of shadow and bring him into spotlight, by showing his influence beyond 15th century, which hasn’t been done before. Although the attitude towards Gerson’s authority was largely conditioned by religious conflicts that had agitated Europe during the Reformation, and his posthumous presence depended above all on the polemical objectives and ideological positions of those who found in him a source of inspiration, the dissertation seeks to overcome religious and national divisions and partisan scholarship. The contents of the dissertation are organized chronologically, denominationally, as well as geographically. In order to provide the reader with historical background immediately preceding the Reformation, chronologically it begins after the closure of the Council of Constance. Denominationally, the study is divided, relatively equally, between Protestant and Catholic receptions. Aside from Gerson’s legacy in England and Scotland, which constitutes a separate chapter, his reception in different regions is represented by geographical subdivisions within chapters. By presenting major features of his influence through the massive appropriation of his thought and work, the study reveals discernable tendencies in Gerson’s reception relevant to humanism, systematic theology, devotional mysticism, pastoral care, jurisprudence and early modern historiography, while leaving conciliarist aspect aside

En dépit d’études conséquentes, la portée littéraire des écrits et de la figure de Jean Charlier Gerson (1363-1429), reste largement méconnue et ce du fait d’un prisme historique et théologique. Le présent travail entend donc combler cette lacune en proposant une étude rhétorique et stylistique de ces textes, ainsi qu’une nouvelle mise en perspective culturelle de la figure du chancelier. L’enjeu est double puisqu’il s’agit d’inscrire les sermons dans une histoire longue du fait esthétique et de redonner à Gerson un statut d’acteur littéraire. Notre démarche s’appuiera pour ce faire sur l’importante formalisation esthétique de ces textes qui empruntent ses cadres à la littérature curiale. Elle se fondera également l’adoption de postures à caractère auctorial qui signalent la participation de Gerson aux milieux lettrés de son époque. Ces différents éléments permettent ensuite de reconsidérer la place des sermons de Gerson dans le champ culturel de la fin du Moyen Âge, marqué par un mouvement d’autonomisation de la littérature face aux milieux cléricaux. Cette étude offre ainsi à un premier niveau une meilleure compréhension du champ littéraire de la fin du Moyen Âge par la mise en lumière d’un acteur clérical encore méconnu. Plus largement, elle permet également de poser des jalons pour une nouvelle intelligence de l’art oratoire, au service notamment d’une histoire longue de l’éloquence de la chaire
In spite of a wide range of studies, the chancellor of the university of Paris Jean Gerson (1363-1429) remains quite unknow as a litterary author and his texts are mainly read in a theological or historical way. Thus, this study will focuse on a rhetorical and stylistic approach of the texts so that they can be understood in a litterary frame. Allegorical devices, images but also auctorial strategies are some of the elements that show the integration of court culture in the homely. In the same time, we will try to consider in a new way Jean Gerson’s role and place in the intellectual context of late Middle Ages

Notre étude porte sur des textes de Jean Gerson (1363-1429), consacrés à la notion de Chant du coeur. Gerson réalise à cette occasion la synthèse des spéculations philosophiques et religieuses relatives à la musique : discipline du "Quadrivium", la musique permet de rendre compte des réalités visibles et invisibles, l'intégralité de la Création étant régie par des lois d'harmonie d'origine divine. Gerson élabore une série de correspondances entre musique et vie spirituelle sur le modèle du 'Magnificat' marial : à la gamme musicale répond une gamme mystique dont les voix affectives sont disposées selon des principes empruntés au calcul des intervalles musicaux. En présentant une édition critique accompagnée d'une traduction et d'un commentaire des 'Tractatus de Canticis' ainsi que du 'Canticordum au Pélerin', nous voulons mettre en évidence les dimensions aussi bien théologiques que musicologiques de cette doctrine, en montrant son importance capitale dans l'histoire de la spiritualité
The present study deals with the theory of the Song of the Heart by Jean Gerson, as laid out in his 'Tractatus de Canticis' and his French dialog 'Canticordum au Pélerin'. By presenting a critical edition and a commentary of these texts, we want to prove the import of Gerson's theological contribution. .

Cette thèse a pour objet un traité de discernement écrit par Jean Gerson (1363-1429), chancelier de l'université de Paris, intitulé De examinatione doctrinarum, "De l'examen des doctrines". Le premier tome de la thèse présente l'histoire du texte – inachevé, mais qui connut un remaniement stylistique - son édition critique, à partir de huit manuscrits, et sa traduction. Le second tome est constitué du commentaire suivi. Le sens du texte est éclairé par l'identité de ses destinataires, les Chartreux et les Célestins, grands lecteurs des mystiques comme Brigitte de Suède et Catherine de Sienne. Gerson a voulu engager ces lecteurs à la prudence. En suivant l'ecclésiologie de saint Paul et en reprenant à Gerson une partie de son analyse, il est proposé, en conclusion, de comprendre la littérature mystique et spirituelle comme étant rattachée au charisme de la prophétie qui, pour faire œuvre d'" édification " dans l'Eglise, doit être " interprétée " par les théologiens
The object of this thesis is chancellor of the University of Paris, Jean Gerson's (1363-1429) De examinatione doctrinarum (On the examination of doctrines), a treatise on discernment. The first volume of the thesis contains the history of this incomplete yet stylistically modified text, its critical edition established from eight manuscripts and its translation. The second volume is a commentary of this texte. The meaning of this one is constructed with attention to the groups to which it was destined, the Carthusians and Celestines who profusely read mystics such as Brigit of Sweden and Catherine of Siena. Gerson intended to call these readers to prudence. Using saint Paul's ecclesiology and relying partially on Gerson's analysis, the conclusion proposes to understand mystical and spiritual literature as linked to the charism of prophecy which, to “edify” the Church, must be “interpreted” by theologians
