The problem of ascertaining by what means and what authority true teachings may be distinguished from false is fundamental to any ecclesiology, since the ecclesiastical community is based, above all, on commonly accepted doctrine. It is a community whose limits are defined — and the parameters within which it operates set — by the body of teachings which is accepted within it as true. Thus, the fundamental practical question which any ecclesiology must address becomes, in effect, who has authority to determine what is taught and what is not; and the answer reveals the main thrust ofthat ecclesiology. In broad terms, two principal, and often conflicting, emphases may be noted: on the community of Christian pilgrims (whom any structure exists to serve), and on the formal ecclesiastical structure (within which the faithful may find security). Pastorally, these emphases are associated to some degree with two different assumptions: either that the believer gains confidence in the institution because of the truth that is taught in it, or that a teaching will be received with confidence by believers ior he reason that it is taught within the institution. In the second case, the pursuit of truth may be subordinated to the support of the expedient.

Abstract The aim of this text is to analyze how the debates Jean Petit’s Justification about the Tyrannicide of Louis of Orléans gave rise to minority and majority positions at in Council of Constance (1414–1418) within the context of the French nation, the general congregations and the general sessions. In order to understand the consolidation of majorities and minorities on this matter it is essential to explain the role played by the emperor Sigismund and his political alliances at the Council. Finally, we explain how Jean Gerson who tried relentlessly to condemn Jean Petit´s thesis, rationalized his failure and justified the Council’s actions.

On 13 April 1403, Parisian chancellor Jean Gerson delivered one of his most famous sermons, a sermon on the Passion of Christ entitled “Ad deum vadit.” That evening, in the second part of the sermon, Gerson set forth the central and most dramatic portion of the Passion narrative, the crucifixion of Jesus. As he had done throughout the story, Gerson sought to recreate the feelings, responses, and very words of Mary as she witnessed her son's suffering. In an anguished question that echoed Jesus’ own, Gerson proclaims that Mary was able to cry to God.

In 1425, Jean Gerson wrote a letter to his brother Jean the Celestine, in which he attacked the Arbor vitae crucifixae Jesu of Ubertino de Casale. A passage toward the end of the letter mentions a lost work of Gerson: Finally, on this matter a short work was recently composed On the Examination of Doctrines. Another short work was also composed On the Doctrine of Raymund Lull. Moreover, certain things were written long ago On the Book that is Called Clymacus on the Thirty Steps of Perfection, whose root is the error of the Stoics [who] assert that the virtues are without feeling — that is, affected in no way through the passions. This is against the statement of the Apostle so widely experienced: “I see another law,” etc. Those who wish to make specific treatises about every single error with its origins will find no end.
