This research studies youth from Haitian background who are somewhat attached to the church of their parents. It seeks to examine the extent of this attachment, firstly, according to pertinent scientific approaches, particularly sociological and psychological and secondly, through the youths’ own perception. From the perspective of pastoral care of migrants, the research also looks at the role of the congregation and the family in this attachment. Theological reflection examines the moral and pastoral support of the apostle Paul towards his young disciple Timothy, who was being criticized by elders in his church community. The situation of Timothy and of the youth in our study will be shown to be correlated. In both, youth is seen to imply immaturity. Likewise, the generation of biblical Ezra is analyzed; there the conservation of religious purity in the nation of Israel is compared to certain immigrant Haitian leaders and youth. This research shows that Haitian youth are attached to their parents’ congregation primarily for sociocultural reasons but also because of their personal faith in God. The mentality of the older generation is found to be crucial and can make this attachment more fragile.

A long experience of teaching has nurtured the research which finds its formalized expression in this thesis. This experience has revealed and confirmed the deep-rooted conviction that secondary-school boys and girls have a real demand for the study of religions and their history. Their interest in religion focuses on the meaning and origin of the beliefs and rituals connected with the major landmarks of man's life, in other words, it has nothing to do with the idea of a salvation to come. The resort to hermeneutics springs from an attempt to understand and acknowledge one's origin: ethics thus becomes central to hermeneutics. Some sort of "complicity" can be traced between morals and science and, as is the case with ecology, it is based upon the absolute necessity to respect others and nature. Science and religion are no longer at ads and the various representations of god express that manor purpose of religion: giving the world its ethical sense

For this survey, religious beliefs, practices and values of young Lebanese Christians were studied from a psycho-sociological point of view. However, such a survey required an in-depth analysis of Lebanese society, and in particular of the various religious confessions making this up. Attention was focused on the structure of families, who remain the basic element of Lebanese society as a whole. Interpersonal relationships and their passing down from one generation to the next are a major influence in the formation of young people and in their integration into their religious community both in the schools and in the parishes. Interviews and quantitative surveys were made in the secondary classes of a number of educational institutions chosen from all five provinces of Lebanon, in order to analyze the young people’s religious behavior and attitudes. Their religious opinions and whatever they had acquired through learning and way of life received particular attention. It was found that these youngsters fell into three broad categories, namely convinced, half-involved and apathetic. The beliefs, practices and values of those in each group were variously influenced by differing socio-cultural factors such as their sex, intellectual level, their parents’ careers and social and professional standing, their attendance in either public or private academic institutions, their confession and the district in which they resided. The study of intra- and inter-community relations, particularly in schools with mixed confessional attendance, led to the conclusion that social harmony was not always easy on account of the diversity of religions and communities

Social and economic changes in recent decades have radically transformed the realities of young adult life. These changes led the student ministry Power to Change at Université Laval to reevaluate its context and its methods in order to better reach Québécois students. The result of these reflections was to found an intentional community (called Le Voisinage, or “The Neighbourhood”) in a student quarter of Quebec City, where Christian young adults decided to move together, integrating life, faith, and mission in their milieu. This study seeks to lay a missiological foundation for this community via a deep investigation of its context and by putting the community in dialogue with a movement of evangelical intentional communities, The New Monasticism. The contextual part of this study asks two questions: in what context was Power to Change founded, and in what ways did this context lead to methods and ways of thinking thinking that are either no longer pertinent, or even distortions of the Christian mission? We argue that a ministry dedicated exclusively to evangelism and discipleship is only relevant in a highly christianized context, and that the Church Growth Theology that we have inherited is patterned after the imaginary of consumer society. As a result, this missiology engages in the dynamics of consumerism and proves harmful both for young adults and for the Church. We finish by evaluating how neo-monastic missiology, based on the idea of the Church as a community of witness, and its expanded perspective of the Kingdom of God can balance a missiology centered on evangelism and individual salvation. A balanced missiology and a balanced practice can thus help the community Le Voisinage better serve students who are facing the pressures of consumer society.

In 1961, the Zairian catholic episcopal conference decided to create small Christian communities grounded in their own geographical environment. That decision was brought about by ecclesial, social and political reasons. However, most of the Zairian dioceses implemented that orientation only in the first part of the seventies. Those years happened to be a period of great tension between the state and the church. In the beginning, the people of all walks of life and of all generations were expected to join whole heartedly in this project. But, looking back upon the last fifteen years, one can see that - after a period of great enthusiasm shown by the faithful - the success of the project differs from one place to another and also depends of the response of certain groups of people. Some social categories - such as well-off people, the youth,. . . - and members of catholic action groups stayed away from this pastoral orientation. Other difficulties -such as the exercise of authority the concept of brotherhood, etc. . . - led to a stalemate. Moreover it seems that these communities are still far from offering a real alternative to the influence of the independent churches. A historical approach (1961-1976) and a sociological survey enabled us to point out what is at stake for the future of the Zairian church. For the success of this pastoral option, parishes need to be re- structured. The church's leaders and the faithful must also make their own the. .
