Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the angiosome of the superior and inferior labial arteries within the superior and inferior labia and to describe superior and inferior labial musculomucosal axial pattern flaps that can be used for intra-oral wound reconstruction. This study also presents the clinical use of a superior labial musculomucosal flap in a dog. Materials and Methods The common carotid arteries of six canine cadavers were injected with barium sulphate. The skin of the face and labial mucosa was removed and radiographed to study the vascular supply of the superior and inferior labia. Results The angiograms in all dogs demonstrated that the superior and inferior labial arteries were located within the musculomucosal layer of the labia. At the junction of the rostral and caudal half of the upper lip, extensive choke anastomoses joined the angiosome of the infra-orbital artery. The inferior labial artery perfused the caudal half of the lower labium and had extensive choke anastomoses with the middle and rostral mental arteries. Clinical Significance The musculomucosal flaps of the superior and inferior labia contain a rich arterial blood supply, which suggests that these flaps may survive in live dogs. The superior labial musculomucosal flap was successfully used to reconstruct a large cleft palate in a single clinical case.

Labial fusion is defined as either partial or complete adherence of the labia minora. It is also known as vulvar fusion, labial adhesion, labial agglutination or synechia of the vulva. This condition is common in pre-pubertal girls when estrogen levels are low and commonly resolves spontaneously post-puberty. This condition is usually asymptomatic and can be treated with topical application of estrogen or betamethasone cream or by manual or surgical separation of adhesions. We present a case of labial fusion in post pubertal girl which was managed surgically.

Complete labial fusion with retention of urine is a rare clinical entity. It occurs when the labia are fused in midline, forming a raphe. It usually develops in postmenopausal women with hypoestrogenism. The usual treatment is with topical estrogen and surgical separation followed by some dilatation. Here we present a case of a 58 years’ postmenopausal, unmarried, nullipara woman who came to our emergency ward with retention of urine. She had history of incomplete voiding and dribbling of urine since six months. General examination and investigations were normal. Her clitoris was normal in size, and the labia majora and anus were visualized well; however, the urethral meatus and vagina were not seen because of fused labia minora.Patient required surgical excision of fused labial folds to relieve the retention. Keywords: Labial fusion; postmenopausal; urinary retention.

Abstract Background Penile inversion vaginoplasty (PIV) has become the most commonly performed genital surgery for transfeminine patients. However, patients undergoing this procedure may still require revisions to achieve a satisfactory result. Objectives The authors report on the utilization of autologous fat grafting to the labia majora to improve results after PIV and complications that may predict the need for grafting. Methods A retrospective chart review was conducted of a single surgeon’s patients who underwent PIV between July 2014 and December 2019. Demographic information, operative information, and postoperative outcomes were abstracted from the health records. Wilcoxon rank sum tests and chi-squared test were employed for continuous variables and categorical, respectively. Results A total of 182 transfeminine and gender-diverse patients underwent PIV, with 6 patients (3.3%) eventually undergoing labial fat grafting. The most common indication for labial fat grafting was flattened labia majora (83%). All fat grafting procedures were performed concurrently with other revisions of the vaginoplasty. There were no demographic or medical history differences detected between the fat grafting and non-fat grafting groups. Patients who underwent labial fat grafting were more likely to suffer from introital stenosis (33% vs 6%, P = 0.007) and prolonged granulation tissue greater than 6 weeks after initial vaginoplasty (83% vs 32%; P = 0.01). Conclusions Labial fat grafting is a safe and effective method to address defects in the labia majora after PIV. Prolonged granulation tissue and introital stenosis may predict the need for labial fat grafting, possibly due to increased scarring and contracture at the surgical site. Level of Evidence: 4

Labial tooth row variation was assessed in Dendropsophus labialis tadpoles from the Cordillera Oriental in Colombia. The presence of a second anterior labial tooth row was detected, showing thus a labial tooth row formula of 2/2. This second anterior tooth row was present in a substantial number of individuals, suggesting that the observed variation is not unusual. This variation contradicts earlier reports about the number of labial tooth rows in this species, whose labial tooth row formula has been reported as 1/2 without variation. A novel ontogenetic pattern of tooth row addition was detected, differing from earlier observations made on Pseudacris regilla tadpoles in terms of tooth row appearance order. The taxonomic implications for these data are discussed along with the evolution of oral morphologies in the genus.

This article describes and analyses the frication of the voiced labial consonants (/b/ and /v/) in Changana, a Bantu language (S53, in Guthrie’s 1967-1971 classification). In the light of the autosegmental phonology (Leben 1973, 1978, 2006; 1973, Goldsmith 1976, 2004; Odden 1986) combined with the Feature Geometry theory, the article discusses phonological processes that turn voiced labials into labial-alveolar affricate [bz]. In this study, we assume that the process of hiatus resolution by gliding is the trigger of the alteration under analysis. That is, when derivative suffixes with low vowel (/a/) and the high front vowel (/i/) in the initial position are attached to words with rounded vowels (/o, u/) in final position in some morphological processes such as diminutivisation and locativisation, the results are undesirable sequences (hiatus). In order to resolve such hiatus, a series of phonological processes such as the turning of the rounded vowel in the word final position into labial-velar glide allowing the adjacency of voiced labials with labial glide which violates the Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) takes place. The present study analyses the OCP using empirical Changana data collected both in the fieldwork supplemented by data from other sources including bibliographical and introspective data. The article is organised as follows. Firstly, it discusses the theoretical framework; secondly it analyses the Hiatus Resolution in Changana; thirdly, it analyses the data and lastly, it presents the main conclusions of the study.

Abstract Among the distinctive features of Occitan varieties spoken in the vicinity of Toulouse is the existence of preterite desinences with a thematic labial (e.g. cantèbi [kanˈtɛβi] ‘sing.prt.1sg’), or without a thematic consonant at all (e.g. cantèi [kanˈtɛ.i] ‘sing.prt.1sg’). Such forms contrast with those ordinarily attested in Occitan, where preterite desinences are typically characterised by a thematic rhotic (e.g. cantèri [kanˈtɛɾi] ‘sing.prt.1sg’), while thematic labials are associated solely with first-conjugation imperfect desinences (e.g. cantavi [kanˈtaβi] ‘sing.ipf.ind.1sg’). This study draws on data from textual sources and linguistic atlases in order to elucidate the development of the Toulousain labial preterites, which are shown to emerge during the course of the eighteenth century, replacing earlier forms in which preterite desinences systematically presented a thematic velar (e.g. cantègui [kanˈtɛɣi] ‘sing.prt.1sg’). Since both intervocalic /b/ and /ɡ/ are subject to deletion in Toulousain varieties, it is argued that the development of the labial preterites is not due to direct analogy from the imperfect indicative, but rather to a perception-based change in which speakers miscategorised tokens of /ɡ/ tending to zero as tokens of /b/, and thereby introduced thematic labials into preterite forms. Forms lacking a thematic consonant result directly from deletion of /ɡ/.

Introduction During the postpartum period, breast engorgement in preparation for lactation may trigger the onset of vulvar labial nodules that present with pain and discomfort. These labial nodules may originate from ectopic breast tissue and can rarely present in women during the postpartum period in the labia majora. Main Issue A 37-year-old African American female, gravida 1 para 1, presented to the Loma Linda University Medical Center with complaints of new onset labial swelling worsening 6 days following her full term spontaneous vaginal delivery. Additionally, our respondent complained of difficulty breastfeeding due to intermittent lack of milk production. She reported bilateral breast engorgement with tenderness, despite frequent attempts at breastfeeding. The respondent’s presentation did not meet the criteria for other common differentials due to the physical characteristics of the nodules. The location of the nodules along the milk line led physicians to believe that the respondent was presenting with engorged extra-mammary breast tissue in the labia majora. Management The participant was told to observe her course over the next few days as she began to have milk production and ejection. The respondent was seen in clinic for her 6-week postpartum visit, and was no longer complaining of difficulty with breastfeeding. The labial nodules had resolved spontaneously. Conclusion A literature search yielded no case reports that described a case of an extra-mammary vulvar mass that self-resolved with resolution of breast engorgement. The infrequent presentation of extra-mammary vulvar tissue makes it difficult to conclude a guideline for diagnosis and management.

This paper takes as its starting point the recently discovered fact that Saramaccan contrasts two types of voiced labial and coronal stop, plain and implosive. The plain labials appear to be modern in origin, something which cannot be said about their coronal counterparts. So we reconstruct an earlier situation in Saramaccan in which only one type of labial voiced stop, the implosive, was present, but both types of coronal. The Gbe languages also have one voiced labial stop, and two coronals, although none of these are implosive. It can be demonstrated, however, that a near-regular correspondence exists between the three putative Saramaccan voiced stops and the three Gbe stops, and conclude that this is an additional piece of evidence for the role of Fon/Gbe as a substrate language for Saramaccan. We further discuss the implications this correspondence has for views on the nature of the 17th century Fon consonant system.

This article investigates soft labial conspiracy in Kurpian, a dialect of Polish that has not been discussed in the generative literature to date. The conspiracy involves four processes: decomposition, simplification, depalatalization, and vowel retraction. These processes are united by the goal to eliminate palatalized labials from the surface representation. The article argues against bidirectional IDENT constraints and for the tenet of Derivational/Stratal OT that analysis must proceed in steps. The evidence comes from the nature of decomposition and from the fact that depalatalization constitutes a Duke-of-York derivation.

Na avaliação do padrão sulcular prevaleceram os sulcos tipo I (linhas verticais completas) e I’ (linhas verticais incompletas).

In previous surveys of long-distance consonant harmony, the major place features [labial], [dorsal] and [coronal] are conspicuously absent from the set of possible harmonising features. Ngbaka Minagende displays major place harmony between labial-dorsal segments and simple labials and velars, thus filling this empirical gap. The presence of complex segments with multiple place is crucial to seeing this harmony pattern clearly. These patterns are best handled in the Agreement by Correspondence framework with an active CC-Ident[place] constraint. Other analyses either cannot capture the pattern at all or require fundamental changes elsewhere in phonological theory. The data are supported by a new digitisation and statistical analysis of a Ngbaka Minagende dictionary.

Background: Labial adhesion is a condition of prepubertal girls where the labia are fused over the vaginal opening and/or urethra. Objective: The purpose of the study was to compare the outcome of estrogen and betamethasone cream in the treatment of labial adhesion. Materials and methods: This prospective comparative study was conducted among 100 pre-pubertal girls with labial adhesion where at least 50% vaginal opening was fused. Patients previously treated with estrogen or betamethasone for labial adhesion was excluded from the study. Fifty patients were treated with betamethasone cream (group 1) and fifty patients with estrogen cream (group 2) after randomization. All patients were followed at 3rd week, 6th week, 3rd month, 6th month and then release of adhesion and adverse effects were noted. Results: Within 3 weeks no adhesion was found in 84.0% participants in group 1 and 64.0% participants in group 2, which showed significant statistical differences (p=0.023). Within 6 months recurrence of adhesion was found in 2.2% participants in group 1 and 23.4% in group 2, which also showed highly significant statistical differences (p=0.004). Success rate was 90.0% and 72.0% within 6 months in group 1 and in group 2 respectively and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.022). Conclusion: Betamethasone cream appears to be a superior agent in terms of effectiveness, safety and cost than estrogen cream in the treatment of labial adhesion in pre-pubertal girls. This paper describes he Surgu Khan y consonan s’ ongue ar icula ions following he electromagnetic articulography method provided by Carstens AG500. An articulography method includes special sensors a ached o speaker’s ar iculators with surgical glue. An electromagnetic field is used for real-time measurement of sensor coordinates. The experiment aimed to obtain the data on Surgut Khanty articulation, not described with instrumental techniques before. The analysis is based on more than 300 words pronounced by the native speaker of the Trom-Agan idiom. Three sensors on the tongue, two on the lips and two reference head movement tracking sensors were used. Audio files were annotated via Praat software. Raw data were treated with R programming language. The Emu-SDMS corpus system and R provided statistical evaluation and visualization. The shapes of the coronal section of the tongue were defined. The graphic forms of these shapes are presented. Coronal consonants /s/, /l/ are reali ed in den al apical shape. oronal consonan s / /, / n/, /r/, / ʃ/ are realized in laminal alveolar and, variably, in apical shape. oronal consonan /ɬ/ comes in pos alveolar shape. Dorsal consonan s / /, / /, /ɲ/, /с с / come in different palatal shapes. Radical consonants /k/, /γ/, /ŋ/ tend to have varying shapes like velar and palatovelar. Labial consonants /p/, /w/ have a neural ongue shape. The phenomenon of velar [γ] labiali a ion is considered. We have found labial w and velar γ in opposi ion after non-labial vowels. After labial vowels, this opposition is neu rali ed in consonan [γʷ]. I comes in velar and pala ovelar ongue shapes and has labial constriction. These facts differ in some aspects with the traditional theory and motivate further research.

In this study the relationship between the functional vertical labial pressure and aging during ingestion in the elderly is examined. The subjects were 84 community-dwelling elderly (mean: 79.4 years old), 109 elderly needing long term care (mean: 81.3 years old), and 59 healthy young adults (mean: 32.0 years old) as control. Labial pressure was measured with a pressure sensor embedded in acrylic plate. There was no correlation between age and labial pressure or the coefficient of variation of labial pressure during ingestion. In people with a history of “choking on food”, labial pressure was, however, significantly lower (p<0.01) than people without a history of “choking on food”, while the coefficient of variation of labial pressure was significantly higher (p<0.05). Poor labial pressure and movement were noted in subjects who experienced “choking on food”, suggesting that lip-closing function also plays an important role in the pharyngeal stage of feeding/swallowing. On the other hand, the coefficient of variation of labial pressure during ingestion was not changed in the elderly group in comparison to the control group. These results showed that skilled movement of lip-closing might be compensated by labial pressure. Labial pressure and skilled movement were, however, decreased in the elderly needing care because of “choking on food.”

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate alveolar bone support around cleft-adjacent maxillary central incisors (U1) in patients with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus and palate (UCLAP) in the late mixed dentition and to investigate the correlation between the alveolar bone thickness (ABT) and tooth inclination. Materials and Methods: Cone beam computed tomography scans of 45 subjects with UCLAP (29 boys, 16 girls; mean age = 10.74 ± 1.08 years) were assessed. The distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and alveolar bone crest (AC), and the ABTs at 3 mm, 6 mm, and the apex were measured on the labial, lingual and distal surfaces of U1. The cleft and normal sides were compared using a paired t-test and Pearson's χ2 test. Pearson's correlation was used to explore the association between the ABT and tooth inclination of cleft-adjacent U1 in the labiolingual and mesiodistal dimensions. Results: The CEJ-AC distances were significantly greater in cleft-adjacent U1 (P < .01), with more bone height reduction observed labially and distally (P < .001). The labial, lingual, and apico-distal ABTs were decreased on the cleft side (P < .01). A positive correlation was found between the apico-labial ABT and the labiolingual inclination (r = 0.568, P < .01). Conclusions: Patients with UCLAP have reduced alveolar bone support around the cleft-adjacent U1, and the apico-labial ABT tends to decrease with increasing lingual tooth inclination; however, the correlation was weak.

It has been observed that the trigger and target in labial harmony are sometimes required to share a particular feature. Working within the framework of Radical CV Phonology, I argue that labial harmony is always subject to further requirements, stated in terms of additional licensing relations. Radical CV Phonology uses a limited set of elements that can be involved in such licensing, resulting in a restricted typology of labial harmony. Furthermore, I propose a distinction between lexical elements, which are always visible, and elements derived through harmony, which become visible in cycles. Crucially, elements derived through labial harmony do not have access to elements derived through tongue-root harmony, thus accounting for the lack of labial harmony in high vowels in tongue-root harmony systems. This architecture also accounts naturally for the behaviour of /i/, which is opaque to labial harmony in Tungusic languages but transparent to labial harmony in Mongolic languages.

The Drosophila endoderm is patterned by the signals Decapentaplegic and Wingless secreted from the visceral mesoderm. This induction culminates in a precise pattern of spatially restricted expression of labial, a selector gene with a role in cell type specification in the larval midgut. Here, we show that Decapentaplegic signalling induces elevated expression of the Drosophila AP-1 transcription factor D-Fos in a slightly broader endodermal region than labial. This induction occurs in parallel to, and independently of, that of labial. Furthermore, we present evidence that D-Fos is required for labial induction in the embryo as well as for maintenance of labial expression through larval stages; and that D-Fos is critical for cellular differentiation in the larval gut. We propose that Decapentaplegic, by inducing D-Fos, broadly defines an endodermal region which thus becomes predisposed to express labial, and that D-Fos cooperates with signal-activated response factors to confer the precise pattern of labial expression in this region.

Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth located in the anterior maxilla, placed palatally, labially or in between the maxillary central incisors. It may be single or paired, erupted or impacted and at times even inverted. This case report describes a palatally positioned two mesiodens in an 8-year-old male. The clinical and radiographic appearance and therapeutic considerations are presented. The purpose of this article is to alert the clinician to the importance of radiographic localization prior to surgical intervention, because in some instances a labial surgical approach is preferred over the traditional palatal technique. In this case a labial surgical approach was utilized which allowed for greater conservation of alveolar bone and improved access during removal of the mesiodens teeth.
