The spaces we inhabit, the urban fabric, the interplay between the two: this architectural thesis seeks to explore the many components of a mixed-use project, its relationship to the city, and its use by potential inhabitants. Through this mixed-use project, many aspects of similar commercial/residential projects in the Washington, D.C. are challenged and rethought. It explores the impact of design on the way people live and work in a city. Research and analysis include architectural language, the workplace, the urban dwelling, the relationship of these to each other, and the relationship of these to the surrounding context. What follows is the documentation of these explorations, from site analysis to final drawings, and the beginnings of an understanding of how architecture can impact the working and living environments.

There have been many predictions about what the future could be. Films such as, “1984”, “Brazil”, and “Blade Runner” as well as books like William Gibson’s fantasy novel “Neuromancer” are but a few examples of such vision. Unfortunately, all have envisioned the future as a cold bleak place where architecture is but a machine and lost people live in sterile environments with no contact with the outside world. Is this what we really believe the future to be? Are we victims of technology of do we control our own fate?

The performance of Captor media integration into the aerobic zone of an activated sludge wastewater treatment system operated at low MCRTs was evaluated using a pilot scale Virginia Initiative Project (VIP) process. Two separate trains were operated, one with Captor media incorporated into the aerobic zone of the system, referred to as an Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IF AS) system, and the other as a control system, i.e., with no media in the aerobic reactors. The wastewater used for this research was pumped from a main municipal sewer of the Blacksburg-VPI Sanitation Authority Collection System. The TKN of the wastewater was supplemented by the addition of urea to maintain the influent ammonia concentration around 55 mg/L as nitrogen. Sodium acetate was added to maintain the influent COD around 450 mg/L and Sodium bicarbonate was added to maintain the pH in the aerobic zone around 7. The system was operated at MCRTs of 1.7, 1.0 and 0.3 days with the operating temperature around 12 C.

Li, Zhijun. "Vehicle merging control for an automated highway system". Diss., Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40048.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This research presents theoretically an automated vehicle merging control which is an important subsystem of AHS. The goal of the system is to automatically control the vehicle merging from ramp to the AHS lane in an efficient, smooth and safe manner. The entire merging process is divided the a speed adjustment stage and a lane merging stage. Three important parameters; acceptability, availability and pursuability are analyzed to characterize the AHS lane gap features. Three control guidance laws (linear, optimal and parabolic speed profile) are developed to describe the desired behaviors of the merging vehicle based on the merging quality and safety consideration. The desired states of the merging vehicle are generated through the outer loop by specified control guidance law. The tracking errors compared with desired states are eliminated by the proper design of controllers in the inner loop. Both longitudinal and lateral controller are designed using the sliding mode control theory which can handle the model nonlinearities and uncertainties of the vehicle dynamics. Two new sliding mode methods are proposed in the design of the lateral controller. The proposed system is evaluated and validated through computer simulations. The simulation results show that system performance is satisfactory under the various merging conditions for a smooth, efficient and safe merging. The system also supplies a basis for the further research on the multiple merging control system and the lane changing control system.

In this dissertation, we first present a unified treatment of compact moment problems, both the truncated and full moment cases. Second, we define the lower and upper functions V±(ð₁,... ð n) on the convex hull of the curve Γn = {(t,.·.,tn): t ∈ [0,1] } for each positive integer n. Explicit formulas of these functions are derived and applied to the study of the subnormal completion problem in operator theory. Last, we show that certain power functions are the building blocks of completely positive functions; by our definition, these functions are the continuous functions on the interval [0, 1] that map each Hausdorff moment sequence of a probability measure into another one.

Several methods have been developed to determine the cyclic oligomer content in PET. Isolation procedures can be classified as those involving extraction, such as with solvents like chloroform, dioxane, and xylene, and those involving dissolution followed by precipitation in solvents like dimethylformamide and 1-methylnaphthalene. The amount of cyclic oligomer obtained is largely dependent upon the method used, as well as the type, drawing, and thermal history of the PET used.Various methods for separation of cyclic oligomers have also been developed using GPC and thin-layer chromatography.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:

This research focused on the surface modification and interfacial profile studies of a siloxane modified polyimide, BDS [BTDA (3,3\4.4'~ benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride) ~ DDS (3.3'~diaminodiphenyl sulfone) - PSX (polydimethylsiloxane) copolymer], used as a coating material. The BDS coating surface can be modified by pretreatment in an alkaline solution. This surface pretreatment etched away the top siloxane surface layer, activated the surface by exposing and creating polar functional groups, particularly carboxylic acid groups, and roughened the surface. These changes on the coating surface significantly improved the wettability and the strength of the bond between the coating surface and a polar adhesive. Interfacial composition profiles were obtained from angular dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Two kinds of interphases were found near the bond line of the coating/metal substrate. One was a component gradient interphase which was formed by component segregation of the BDS copolymer. The component gradient was different on different metal oxide surfaces with the siloxane interfacial excess in the order of AI > Ti > Zn. The relative acidities of the metal oxide surfaces were characterized by poly(vinyl chloride) adsorption tests which were quantified by XPS measurements. The relative acidities were found in the order of AI > Ti > Zn. Therefore, the cause for the BDS component segregation was suggested to be the influence of acid·base interactions between components of the BDS copolymer and the metal surface oxides. The other kind of interphase was a polymer·metal oxide mixture interphase which formed on penetration of the BDS copolymer solution into porous aluminum surfaces.

Resumo:

Weight gain during pregnancy, relationships among body image, body weight standards, and attitudes toward weight gain were investigated. Weight gain recommendations, based on preconceptional weight status (PCWS) reflected current practices in prenatal care at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, VA, and provided a basis on which to categorize weight gain as inadequate, appropriate, and excess. Women who experienced excess weight gain (EWG) were compared to those who experienced appropriate weight gain (AWG) or inadequate weight gain (IWG) to identify their characteristics. Of the 138 women studied, 54 experienced EWG. Weight gain recommendations for overweight women were similar to those for normal weight women, 20-25% PCW. Obese women who lost weight or gained less than 15 pounds were identified with the inadequate weight gain group.

Lin, Shih-Yung. "Integration and processing of high-resolution moiré-interferometry data". Diss., Virginia Tech, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40181.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
A new hybrid method combining moire interferometry, high resolution data-reduction technique, two-dimensional datasmoothing method, and Finite Element Method (FEM) has been successfully developed. This hybrid method has been applied to residual strain analyses of composite panels, strain concentrations around optical fibers embedded in composites, and cruciform composite shear test. This hybrid method allows moire data to be collected with higher precision and accuracy by digitizing overexposed moire patterns (U & V fields) with appropriate carrier fringes. The resolution of the data is ± 20 nm. The data extracted from the moire patterns are interfaced to an FEM package through an automatic mesh generator. This mesh generator produces a nonuniform FEM mesh by connecting the digitized data points into triangles. The mesh, which uses digitized displacement data as boundary conditions, is then fed to and processed by a commercial FEM package. Due to the natural scatter of the displacement data digitized from moire patterns, the accuracy of strain values is significantly affected. A modified finite-element model with linear spring elements is introduced so data-smoothing can be done easily in two dimensional space. The results of the data smoothing are controlled by limiting the stretch of those springs to be less than the resolution of the experimental method. With the full-field hybrid method, the strain contours from moire interferometry can be easily obtained with good accuracy. If the properties of the material are known, the stress patterns can also be obtained. In addition, this method can be used to analyze any two-dimensional displacement data, including the grid method and holography.

Resumo:
This dissertation is a collection of papers investigating objectives and incentives in financial markets. The first essay (Chapter 2) deals with the endogenous determination of credit history, credit-worthiness, loans and efforts by borrowers over time. A financial market with adverse selection and moral hazard is analyzed. Facing the adverse selection, lenders are not able to offer separate contracts to different types of borrowers. However, knowing borrowers' credit histories, lenders are able to assign different credit worthiness to borrowers that have different credit histories, and offer different contracts to different groups. It is shown that if borrowers' credit rating is too low, they make low effort to repay their debts. As a borrower acquires a good credit history and has his credit-rating upgraded above a certain point, it becomes worthwhile for him to choose high effort. A low quality borrower may make high effort in early periods in order to build up a good credit history and obtain better terms in the future contracts then shift back to the low effort even though his project continues to succeed when he approaches the end of his life.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Two waveform-shaping techniques to reduce or eliminate the switching stresses and switching losses in switching-mode power conversion circuits are developed: the zero-current switching technique and the zero-voltage switching technique. Based on these two techniques two new families of quasi-resonant converters are derived. Since the stresses on semiconductor switching devices are significantly alleviated, these quasi-resonant (QRC) converters are suitable for high-frequency operations with much improved performances and equipment power density. Employing the duality principle, the duality relationship between these two families of quasi-resonant converters are derived. The establishment of the duality relationship provides a framework allowing the knowledge obtained from one converter family to be readily transferred to the other. Further topological refinements are derived through the utilization of parasitic elements in the devices and the circuit. In particular, the two most significant parasitic elements, the leakage inductance of the transformer and the junction capacitances of the semiconductor switch, are incorporated as part of the resonant-tank circuit required by these quasi-resonant converters. Consequently, the detrimental effects due to these parasitic elements are eliminated, and the converters can be operated at very high frequencies.

The activity and the selectivity of cycloxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butylJ-3-hydroxy- 5-(2H-tetrahydrothiopyran-3-yl)-2-cyclohexen-l-one}, code designation BAS 517, were examined flIst with etiolated seedlings of com (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Etiolated soybean seedlings were not affected by cycloxydim. The degree of growth inhibition of com varied with concentration of cycloxydim and incubation time. Compared to mesocotyls and coleoptiles, radicles of corn were the most sensitive to cycloxydim. Meristematic tissues appeared to be the site of action of cycloxydim as root meristems were the first to show symptoms. A band of reddening tissue developed at meristematic tips followed by the complete cessation of root growth. In a study comparing activities of technical grade and formulated cycloxydim and sethoxydim, {2-[ l-(ethoxyimino )butyl}- 5-[2-(ethylthio )propy11-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-l-one}, formulated compounds were more potent than the technical grade chemicals without formulation additives. Technical sethoxydim was more potent than technical cycloxydim. Root tips excised from com and soybean seedlings were used subsequently for cycloxydim treatments. The activity and selectivity of cycloxydim expressed at the isolated root tip level were similar to those of cycloxydim bioassayed with whole seedlings. However, root tips appeared to be more sensitive than the whole seedlings. Injury at the tissue and cell levels of the 2-mm root tips that were treated with various concentrations of cycloxydim was examined after 24 hours incubation. Concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 μM cycloxydim caused severe cell vacuolization. A gradient of decreasing injury from epidermal cells toward the center of roots was observed. This pattern of injury appeared to reflect the penetration of cycloxydim into roots along a concentration gradient.

Liao, Kin. "Tensile and uniaxial/multiaxial fatigue behavior of ceramic matrix composites at ambient and elevated temperatures". Diss., Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40047.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Increasing use of fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMC's) materials is needed, especially for hostile environments such as elevated temperatures. However, some fundamental issues regarding how these materials should be made for optimized performance are far from being settled. This study focuses on the modeling of the tensile behavior of unidirectional CMC using statistical methods and micro-mechanical analysis, based on laboratory observations. The model can be used to examine the effect of performance-influencing parameters on the strength of unidirectional CMC, thus shed light on how such material should be put together. The tensile strength model was then modified such that the behavior of unidirectioal CMC under cyclic tensile load can be studied. Results from the tensile strength model suggest that the Weibull modulus, m, of the strength of the reinforcing fibers and the fiber/matrix interfacial shear stress both have significant effect on the strength and toughness of the unidirectional composite: a higher m value and a lower interfacial shear stress result in a lower strength; a lower value of m and a higher interfacial shear stress results in a higher strength but lower toughness. Calculations from the tensile fatigue model suggest that a lower m value results in a longer fatigue life.

Liu, Xin. "In vitro and in vivo studies on the biotransformation of β-nicotyrine, a minor tobacco alkaloid". Diss., Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39263.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
β-Nicotyrine is a minor tobacco alkaloid found in both tobacco plants and tobacco smoke. Preliminary studies have shown that β-nicotyrine is pneumotoxic and that the toxicity is mediated via its metabolites formed in reactions catalyzed by cytochrome P-450. The in vitro metabolic fate of β-nicotyrine has been examined in rat liver microsomal preparations and rabbit lung and liver microsomal preparations utilizing HPLC UV-diode array analysis. Four metabolites have been identified from the incubation mixtures of β-nicotyrine with rabbit lung and liver microsomal preparations. The primary in vitro metabolites are two unstable pyrrolinone species, 1-methyl-5-(3-pyridyl)-4-pyrrolin-2-one and 1-methyl-5-(3-pyridyl)-3-pyrrolin-2-one, which exist in equilibrium. The pyrrolinones undergo autoxidation to form a secondary metabolite, 5-hydroxy-1-methyl-S-(3-pyridyl)-3-pyrrolin-2-one, and hydrolysis to form 5'-hydroxycotinine. The autoxidation is likely to involve a free radical process. Evidence to support this proposal has been obtained by studies on 2-acetoxy-1-methyl-5-(3-pyridyl)pyrrole, a latent form of the pyrrolinones. Free radicals generated following hydrolysis of the acetoxypyrrole derivative have been trapped and detected by ESR analysis by spin trapping techniques. In contrast, only the starting substrate β-nicotyrine was found in the incubation mixture of β-nicotyrine with rat liver microsomes. The in vivo metabolic fate of β-nicotyrine has been examined in rabbits and mice by HPLC UV-diode array and GC-EIMS analysis of urine extracts. Three metabolites have been identified. Besides S'-hydroxycotinine and 5-hydroxy-1-methyl-5-(3-pyridyl)-3-pyrrolin-2-one, observed in the in vitro studies, 3'-hydroxycotinine is also found and determined to be the principal urinary metabolite of β-nicotyrine in both species. The stereochemistry of this 3'-hydroxycotinine is cis. This is in contrast to the trans stereochemistry of the urinary metabolite of (S)-cotinine and (S)-nicotine. The mechanism of formation of cis-3'-hydroxycotinine from β-nicotyrine is proposed to involve a free radical process leading to the formation of the precursor 3-hydroxy-1-methyl-5-(3- pyridyl)-4-pyrrolin-2-one. This intermediate then undergoes a carbon-carbon double bond reduction to yield the final product. This proposal is supported by in vivo studies on 5-hydroxy-1-methyl-5-(3-pyridyl)-3-pyrrolin-2-one which undergoes reduction to 5'-hydroxycotinine. Furthermore, 2-acetoxy-1-methyl-5- (3-pyridyl)pyrrole goes to cis-3'-hydroxycotinine as the major urinary metabolite. The results of these studies point to a potentially novel metabolic bioactivation pathway of (S)-nicotine that could be relevant to some of the toxic effects observed in chronic tobacco users.
