On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin (1809–1882) was published in 1859 in England and in 1860 in the United States. Its relatively positive initial reception in the United States was facilitated by a number of factors including the prominence of geology among the sciences, the high standing of Darwin with James Dwight Dana (1813–1895), and common knowledge about geology among many non-geologists. As indicated by the example of Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865), knowledge of a long duration for the Earth and of the fact of species extinction was taken for granted. At the level of elite science,

Introduction The fusion of noir and Western elements in All the Pretty Horses (McCarthy) presents an anomalous hybrid, bridging the fatalism and existential despair of noir with the rugged individualism and pastoral decline of the Western. This relationship complicates traditional narrative boundaries, inviting readers to reconsider the archetypes and thematic constructs at play. Situated within a frontier grappling with industrial encroachment, All the Pretty Horses presents a world caught between preservation and progress. By focussing on the role of horses, this article explores their symbo

The American Romantic writers laid a broad foundation for the historic and heroic Abraham Lincoln who has evolved as our national myth. The writers were attracted to Lincoln by his eloquent expression of the body of ideals and beliefs they shared with him, especially the ideal of individual liberty and the belief that achievement of the ideal would bring about an amelioration of the human condition. The time, place and conditions in which they lived enhanced the attraction, and Lincoln's able leadership during the Civil War strengthened their estimation of him. His martyrdom was the catalyst w

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)<br>Although the main emphasis of this study is Lane and his part in the Republican Party, another important part to this thesis is the examination of Indiana and national politics in the 1850s. This thesis studies the development of the Hoosier Republican Party and the obstacles the young organization experienced as it transformed into a major political party. Party leaders generally focused on states like New York and Pennsylvania in national elections but Indiana became increasingly significant leading up to the 1860 election. Though

By almost every standard, Abraham Lincoln is rated as America’s greatest president. This recognition stems from five factors. First, Lincoln presided, with ultimate success, over the direst crisis in American history. Had he been less skilled or less determined, the Civil War might very well have ended in the permanent division of the nation. Second, Lincoln accomplished the abolition of slavery in the United States and led the nation in taking its first steps toward racial justice. Third, Lincoln was one of the most impeccable craftsmen of the English language to ever hold political office in

Leaders in the South stated candidly that their aim in fighting the war was to protect their privileged status as slaveowners and to prevent Blacks from obtaining any rights that might threaten that privilege.
