[Truncated abstract] A paradox exists in tumour immunology whereby progressive tumour growth exists in parallel with an anti-tumour T cell response. This defective T cell response is thought to result from the induction of T cell tolerance and/or tumour induced immunosuppression, which act to inhibit the activation, differentiation and function of tumour-specific CD8+ T cells. Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen presenting cells (APCs) that are critical to the generation of effective CTL; however their function and phenotype is often defective or altered in tumour-bearing hosts, whi

The immune regulatory abilities of alveolar macrophages from C57B1/6 mice bearing a metastatic variant of Lewis lung carcinoma were determined. During early stages of tumor development, or before tumors metastasized to the lungs, alveolar macrophages did not affect or slightly enhanced T-lymphocyte proliferation; as tumor growth progressed, or following tumor metastasis, alveolar macrophages suppressed the T-cell response. Macrophage suppressor activity was probably not mediated by their production of PGE, since macrophages of tumor-bearing mice secreted less 2 PGE than did macrophages of norm

In mice infected with 10$ sp4$ Giardia muris cysts, a peak lymphocyte proliferation in the spleen and Peyer's patches in response to Giardia extract occurred during the elimination and latent phases, respectively. This shows that the Peyer's patch cells are more responsive than the spleen to Giardia infection. Th2-type cytokines produced by Peyer's patch cells may play a protective role during the latent and acute phases. Th1-type cytokines may contribute to this production during the elimination phase. Background. Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP, also known as amylin) is a 37-amino acid peptide principally co-secreted with insulin from the beta-cells of the pancreatic islets. Some of the physiological actions of human amylin (hIAPP) include glucose regulation, suppression of appetite and stimulation of renal sodium and water reabsorption. Amylin deficiency and diminished post-prandial amylin response have been reported in advanced stages of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In autopsy specimens of type 2 diabetes, amyloid is found in 40--90% of cases. During the characterization of islet morpholog

The aging process is strongly associated with decreased activity in the immune system. Dysregulation of T-lymphocyte function, such as reduced proliferation, is one problem faced by most elder people, which prevents them from successfully dealing with exogenous pathogens. Effective regulation of T-lymphocyte activity depends on the proper and prompt transduction of both positive and negative signals within Tlymphocytes and reflects the balance between positive and negative effects. Decline of positive signaling in aging has been studied and reported, while mechanisms concerning up-regulation o
