The issues of media concentration have currently been quite often the topic of public discussion and the subject of study of many analysts and publicists. The fact that the processes of concentration in recent decades are beginning to acquire a global character is first of all evidenced by the creation of large transnational media corporations, which are already showing a desire for international domination in a particular area of the media business. In addition, media owners from developed countries are actively expanding into the information markets of developing countries. Given the global impact of information technology on the entire socio-economic space, it seems necessary to define the concept of information globalization, to assess the scale of information shifts in the modern media economy. The relevance of this study is due to the need for a scientific understanding of concentration and diversification as forms of organizing media business in the context of globalization. Researchers identify globalization, convergence, glocalization, demassification, and diversification as the main trends characterizing the development of modern mass media. The purpose of this article is to characterize the processes of globalization in the communication industry that have influenced changes in the structure of the media market to describe the models of diversification and mutual integration of holding media. The theoretical and methodological basis of the work was formed by conceptual provisions, recommendations, and conclusions presented in the fundamental scientific works of domestic researchers on history, theory, typology, research methods of the Russian media industry (E. L. Vartanova, S. M. Gurevich, E. Ch. Andrunas, S. I. Beglov, S. S. Smirnov). When writing this article, we used the methods of system analysis, as well as expert analytical, descriptive, historical and theoretical methods.Conclusions. Globalization of information space, as an inevitable and extremely important phenomenon, affects all spheres of the socio-economic life of society, changing the motivation of economic actors at the micro level and modifying the macroeconomics in general.

In this paper, I focus on the study of the relationships between technological specificity and media mix, focusing on how anime, as a visual medium, is connected to other media. There are two main aspects to this paper: the study of the complexities of the visual media milieu in the age of media mix, taking into account the technological materiality of different channels of production and consumption, and the study of the way these complexities must be approached. Taking materiality and information as the key aspects of the way specific objects in media are interconnected, I explore a question that has appeared recently in media studies: what is the right way to approach the relationships between media?

Discussions of the specificity of digital media are in a state of fruitful flux. After the dismissal of mediality in the utopian glow of media convergence, new theoretical developments allow us to reconceive this idea. Using the critical realist precept that properties in the world have real dispositions or powers, the author expands this system of thought to provide a framework with which to understand digital media. This is presented to add to and help direct the current debates.

In computational linguistics, specificity quantifies how much detail is engaged in text. It is an important characteristic of speaker intention and language style, and is useful in NLP applications such as summarization and argumentation mining. Yet to date, expert-annotated data for sentence-level specificity are scarce and confined to the news genre. In addition, systems that predict sentence specificity are classifiers trained to produce binary labels (general or specific). We collect a dataset of over 7,000 tweets annotated with specificity on a fine-grained scale. Using this dataset, we train a supervised regression model that accurately estimates specificity in social media posts, reaching a mean absolute error of 0.3578 (for ratings on a scale of 1-5) and 0.73 Pearson correlation, significantly improving over baselines and previous sentence specificity prediction systems. We also present the first large-scale study revealing the social, temporal and mental health factors underlying language specificity on social media.

The article summarizes information on the concepts «media education», «media literacy» and «media competence». The author emphasizes that foreign language teachers ought to be media literate, media competent, be able to use the means of media education, and teach students to create their own media space. Based on the analysis of scientific achievements of domestic and foreign researchers in the field of media education, the essential features of media literacy and media competence as important characteristics of the result of media education of pupils and students are revealed. It has been proven that foreign language teachers’ media competence is related to the development of skills of media immunity, reflection and critical thinking as psychological mechanisms of media literacy, which provide conscious consumption of media products based on effective media orientation, adequate evaluation of information in foreign languages. The relevance of the use of educational media products in the foreign language teachers’ professional activity is determined. The conditions for the formation of foreign language teachers’ media competence are revealed – the desire for self-improvement, clear internal motivation, the availability of relevant knowledge in the field of media education, involvement in practical activities to evaluate media texts and create one’s own media products.

The object of this thesis was to create models for two applications which readily appear in separation chemistry, namely the solid-liquid and the liquid-liquid extractions. The benefit of modelling in both cases is twofold. Studying the fundamental properties of ions and their solvation properties in the complex media, and simplifying the expression for important effects, enables us to construct the framework which can be used by both chemists in the laboratory, as well as the chemical engineers in the process design. For two applications we adapted two different systems, both of which can be considered as complex. The model system to study the solid-liquid separation were TiO$_{mathrm{2}}$ nanotubes dispersed in the aqueous solution. This system was studied by the means of Classical Density Functional Theory coupled with the charge regulation method, within the Grand-canonical ensemble. Indeed, the method proved to be successful in establishing the full description of the charge properties of TiO$_{mathrm{2}}$ nanotubes. In this case, we were interested in obtaining the description of ion inside the charged nanotubes under influence by the electric field (exhibited by nanotubes). Calculations predicted effects such as the difference in surface charge between the outer and the inner surface, or the violation of electroneutrality inside the nanotubes. It was demonstrated that the model was in the agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the method can be directly used to predict titration for various techniques. A simple generalization of the proposed approach can be used to study the actual adsorption efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process. The model system to study the liquid-liquid extraction process included three distinct parts. The three parts were devoted to the cases on non-ionic, acidic ion exchangers, and finally the synergistic mixtures of extractants. Simple bulk statistical thermodynamics model, in which we incorporated some of the well-established concepts in colloidal chemistry provided a soft-matter approach for the calculation of actual engineering-scale processes. Were have expanded a classical simple equilibria approach to broader, more intuitive polydisperse aggregates formation that underlines the liquid-liquid extraction. The key finding can be presented as a current opinion or newly-proposed paradigm: at equilibrium, many aggregates completely different in composition but similar in free energy coexist. With obtained polydispersity, we were equipped with a tool to study a more 'global' behavior of liquid-liquid extraction. This urged us to pass our considerations of historical extraction isotherms to extraction 'maps'. Great care was devoted to the study of synergy since it is a 60-year old ongoing question in the separation industrial and science community. To our best knowledge, the first quantitative rationalization total synergistic extraction was proposed within this thesis. Underlying effects of enthalpy and entropy control on the organic phase structuring were decoupled and studied in detail. Hopefully, this thesis demonstrated the importance of mesoscopic modelling to assist both chemists and chemical engineers in practical examples

While many comparative studies reveal how a given medium determines narrative in ways distinct from others, I uniquely consider within this thesis the highly variable structure of a single given medium and the resultant implications for storyworlds and their presentations. Focusing upon the production of serial narrative within multiple media, I map the intricate processes by which cultural industries inform narrative diversity. Through the introduction of my dimensions of specificity model, I account for diachronically- and synchronically-variable conditions of narrative design within a given medium, revealing the complex interactions between media and narrative that are frequently overlooked. Via the model, I identify the ways in which narrative design processes are, within a medium, specific to the historically changeable configurations of a particular market. I examine in tum how, within a given market, these narrative design processes are further specific to the particular requirements of an intended audience, the particular technologies of production, distribution and consumption, and the particular economic strategy and production culture of a commissioning media institution. Chapter one historicises the project by exploring the relevance of this model to nineteenth-century British literary-serial fiction; it takes into account the ramifications to narrative of contrasting specificities within markets, audiences, institutions and technologies of the Victorian era. The remaining three chapters each consider in depth a single dimension of specificity in relation to a particular contemporary US media industry. Chapter two analyses the dimension of institutional specificity within the context of US television; it distinguishes between the economic models of network, basic cable and premium cable institutions, gauging the unique implications of each system to the narrative design processes of primetime drama series. Chapter three investigates the contingency of narrative upon the dimension of audience specificity within the US comic-book industry; it examines how publishers' endeavours to court audiences beyond their dedicated niche-readership have impacted upon writing and illustrating practices. Chapter four charts the significance of the dimension of technological specificity to narratives within the videogame home-console market; it explores the connections between an industrially enforced technological-upgrade culture and the ongoing development of story-driven videogame series. Through this tracing of the variable ways by which cultural industries can influence storyworlds and their presentations, I provide with this thesis a necessarily nuanced understanding of the relationship between narrative and media.

During World War I, war films became an important part of Swedish cinema programs. Newsreels as well as war related fiction films from the different battling nations were distributed to film theaters around the country. With these new films, the recently established censorship bureau also got new duties to consider. Aside from protecting public moral and the youth, the censors were now expected to uphold the Swedish neutrality policy in the domain of cinema. Material sensitive for diplomatic relations or potentially politically arousing for the audience was removed or edited. There were several reasons as to why cinema was singled out as the most important medium to control during these sensitive times. The authentic aura of moving images together with a fear of the reactions of mass audiences made the risk of biased propaganda seem greater. This thesis analyzes the complex web of relations between Swedish neutrality, media specificity discourse and censorship of World War I films. Examples of censorship of both newsreels and fiction films are discussed in relation to media specificity discourse in trade journals and daily newspapers of the time.

Digital art installation is the result of informatic materials entering gallery spaces and challenging the establishment of media forms. This thesis contends that the open, recursive and recombinatory process of looking at digital installation is in fact the result of noisy relations between information and the spatial temporal contexts of the art gallery. In order to focus on the processes of informatic materials within gallery spaces, this thesis identifies four key modulations of noise and materiality ? emergence, feedback, entropy and delay. I demonstrate how these impact on a range of recent digital installations by Australian and New Zealand artists. The lens of digital materiality shifts from an informational context into that of art history where it is found to highlight the systemic relationality of the installation. The thesis opens with a consideration of histories of media-specificity, and argues for a necessary separation of our concepts of media and materiality. This context provides a set of tools by which the remainder of the thesis investigates a range of digital material flows that are not tied to fixed media definitions. I draw on a range of theorists including Umberto Eco, Gilles Deleuze, Claude Shannon and Jack Burnham to further locate these material flows within two strands: experimental sound and information theory. This discussion forms the basis of the thesis? re-appraisal of media distinctions and highlights the complex relationship of informational materials to both sonic and visual histories. The second half of the thesis undertakes an appraisal of emergence, feedback, entropy and delay in specific works and suggests dimensionality, movement and duration as key determinants of the digital installation. These chapters demonstrate that what is at stake in digital installation is the viewer?s implicit role in the shifting relationships of digital materiality. Overall, this thesis presents a framework for emergent materiality in digital installation. I develop a theory of emergent materiality as a process specific to digital installation, and argue that digital installation is in fact a subject-forming assemblage of information-noise in which relations of dimensionality, movement and duration coalesce without cohering. And, within which gallery spaces begin to get noisy.

This study has aimed to examine how Världsnaturfonden WWF communicates trust in various communication channels. We also wanted to see if there are any differences in the different channels on how WWF communicates trust. It is a qualitative study that uses critical rhetoric analysis as method. We choose to analyze the communication channels sponsored facebookposts, personalized letters and two sites from WWF:s website. The empirical data has been analyzed with the aid of theories of strategic communication, non-profit organizations, rhetoric and media specificity. The results show that WWF uses various communication strategies to communicate trust in all of the examined channels. The most important aspects of trust is communicated through presenting what WWF:s collected money has contributed to, that the organization appears to be knowledgeable and engaged in the various areas they work for. In all of the channels we have examined, we have also seen that WWF uses a personal address to the reader. In the sponsored facebookposts and in the personalized letters, we find that WWF communicates more trust than on the website by using more emotions. WWF express more gratitude for donors and more concern for the various animals and the environment affected. Other differences we have seen between the channels are that they differ in how they are designed, but these differences are mainly due to different norms relating to the specific channels. This study has contributed with knowledge of how a non-profit organization such as WWF rhetorically communicates trust to different target groups through different communication channels. This study has also contributed to knowledge of the differences and similarities regarding how WWF communicates trust through the three different communication channels.

This action research-based doctoral thesis concerns course content and language-learning objectives in the sector of L2 teaching in France for students in higher education who are not specializing in that language, a sector known as Languages for Specialists of Other Disciplines (LANSOD). Discussions about LANSOD course content often refer to the appropriate degree of specificity for these classes in line with a Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP) perspective. However, in this work, we will question the utility of a specificity continuum ranging from “general” to specific” language teaching, particularly due to the ambiguity of the concept of “general language.” Instead, we will suggest that the development of flexible pragmatic skills is a more pertinent objective than “general language skills” for groups of students with undetermined or varied language needs. In order to explore this argument, we selected a classroom of second-year undergraduate students in the field of Culture and Media at the University of Lille because of the students’ varied needs and implemented a series of pedagogical initiatives based on genre-based text analysis and description to develop the students’ flexible pragmatic competence in English. Results show that our approach elicited a variety of interesting pragmatic insights from students even though the notions of genre and context proved more difficult to deal with than we had foreseen. Since the field of pragmatics is producing increasingly sophisticated approaches to the study of communication and context, we conclude that this field offers promising insights for LANSOD course content specification, particularly with regards to the lens that it offers on specificity

Bock, Anja. "The crossover of new media immersion and site-specificity : contemporary art and spatial experience". Thesis, 2009. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/976325/1/Bock_PhD_2009.pdf.

Resumo:
In the literature on contemporary installation art, a conceptual paradox keeps rearing its head: frequently artworks are described as immersive and site-specific. But how can they be both? Although both terms have solid foundations within art history, they tend to be regarded as mutually exclusive categories, pertaining to very different kinds of aesthetic experience: "immersion" draws on our relationship with new media and engages a long history of illusionism and simulation, while "site-specificity" focuses on actual places as a way to circumvent illusionism and reveal the material or ideological forces that define a particular site. Given this difference, my objective is twofold: first to discover their respective usefulness and limitations, and then to ask, what happens when we think of them together? In answer to this question I propose that the discourses of new media immersion and site-specificity have created a "crossover." That is, the two discursive zones have neared each other to the point that they have created a force field between them, thereby generating a new zone altogether. I am using the figure to suggest the drastic waning in prominence of new media immersion and site-specificity as discrete discourses within art history over the last decade: each falls away to the margins, falling by the wayside of validated art practices, leaving between them the expansive zone of the crossover. This zone is explored through detailed analysis of five artworks: Olafur Eliasson's installation Notion Motion (2005); Philip Beesley's interactive environment Hylozoic Soil (2007); Mike Nelson's tri-part stage-set Triple Bluff Canyon (2004); Gregor Schneider's labyrinthine Weisse Folter (2007); and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's augmented city square Under Scan (2005). I propose that each artwork helps build critical theory around the issues at stake in the crossover, particularly with regard to contemporary spatial experience and its implications for subjectivity. The case studies have been grouped into three chapters in order to allow certain issues pertinent to the crossover to come to the fore more forcefully: interactivity, spatial facsimiles and augmented places.

This chapter traces how changes in media and surveillance technologies have influenced the strategies producers have for constructing audiences. The largely unregulated practices of information gathering that inform the measurement and evaluation of audiences have consequences for how individuals are viewed by media producers and, consequently, for how they view themselves. Recent technological advances have increased the specificity with which advertisers target audiences—moving from the classification of audience groups based on shared characteristics to the personalization of commercial media content for individuals. To assist in the personalization of content, media producers and advertisers use interactive technologies to enlist individuals in the construction of their own consumer reputations. Industry discourse frames the resulting personalization as empowering for individuals who are given a hand in crafting their media universe; however, these strategies are more likely to create further disparity among those who media institutions do and do not view as valuable.

This chapter aims to rethink Lessing’s Laocoon by reassessing its fundamental aesthetic contribution. The essay proceeds in three parts. First, it argues that Lessing’s critical practice in Laocoon demonstrates how the amateur’s ‘felt’ responses to an artwork’s aesthetic effect bears on the critic’s judgment concerning both what and how artworks mean. Second, Kottman claims that Lessing’s discussion of medium-specificity is not meant to arrive at any fixed ‘theory’ of different media; rather, it follows from his broader sense of what art does through its solicitation of our imagination. Third, the chapter argues that Lessing’s focus on the ‘limits’ of painting and poetry does not present transcendentally derived criteria according to which different ‘media’ are graspable; rather, Lessing shows how the very view that artworks or practice yield a special understanding of human life, unavailable elsewhere, is earned through the careful consideration of the achievements of specific artworks and practices.

During the 1910s and early 1920s, some thirty known film adaptations of works by Henrik Ibsen were produced in a number of countries. Chapter 9 examines the four American silent film Ibsen adaptations still known to exist: The Pillars of Society (1911), Peer Gynt (1915), Ghosts (1915), and Pillars of Society (1916). Drawing on extant film material, contemporary film reviews, and trade press articles, it approaches these films, through their various adaptation strategies and their trade press reception, in terms of broader discourses about what is often characterized as the transitional period in US film history, focusing in particular on discussions throughout the 1910s concerning medium specificity and media borders. The essay emphasizes stylistic and narrative strategies in the four films, in particular those connected to space, narrative, and performance, as well as ethical and moral considerations associated with the Ibsen film, including their contemporaneous reception.

The Power of the In-Between: Intermediality as a Tool for Aesthetic Analysis and Critical Reflection gathers fourteen individual case studies where intermedial issues—issues concerning that which takes place in between media—are explored in relation to a range of different cultural objects and contexts, different methodological approaches, and different disciplinary perspectives. The cases investigate the intermediality of such manifold objects and phenomena as contemporary installation art, twentieth-century geography books, renaissance sculpture, media theory, and public architecture of the 1970s. They also bring together scholars from the disciplines of art history, comparative literature, theatre studies, musicology, and the history of ideas.Starting out from an inclusive understanding of intermediality as “relations between media conventionally perceived as different,” each author specifies and investigates “intermediality” in their own particular case; that is, each examines how it is inflected by particular objects, methods, and research questions. “Intermediality” thus serves both as a concept employed to cover an inclusive range of cultural objects, cultural contexts, methodological approaches, and so on, and as a concept to be modelled out by the particular cases it is brought to bear on. Rather than merely applying a predefined concept, the objectives are experimental. The authors explore the concept of intermediality as a malleable tool of research. This volume further makes a point of transgressing the divide between media history and semiotically and/or aesthetically oriented intermedial studies. The former concerns the specificity of media technologies and media interrelations in socially, politically, and epistemologically defined space and time, and the latter targets formal considerations of media objects and its various meaning-making elements. These two conventionally separated fields of research are integrated in order to produce a richer understanding of the analytical and historical, as well as the aesthetic and technological, conditions and possibilities of intermedial phenomena.

If cinema has the power to possess people, persuade, or mesmerize them, how do we understand that compelling power? Is the display of devotion in the cinema hall the same as devotion in a temple? How have cinema and popular religion shaped each other? Through engaging with these questions, this book presents a genealogical study of the intersections between cinema, religion, and politics in South India. The first full-length study of the Telugu mythological and devotional films, this book combines a history of these genres with an anthropology of film-making and viewership practices. In the decades from the 1940s to the 2000s, it examines film texts, as well as methods of film-making and publicity, modes of film criticism as well as practices of viewership. The book draws on film and media theory to foreground the specificity of new technologies and the new kind of publics they create. Anthropological theories of religion, secularism, embodiment, and affect are combined with political theories of citizenship to complicate our understanding of the overlapping formations of film spectators, citizens, and devotees. It argues that the cinema offers a unique opportunity to explore the affective dimensions of citizenship and the formation of citizen–devotees.

Purpose – we investigate models of social media activity of small local banks (SLBs) in Poland and the consequences of their adoption for SLBs’ growth. Research methodology – with the use of k-medoid clustering, we differentiate between types of SLBs’ social media activity. Then, after controlling for bank specificity and local environment, we employ these activity types in regression models explaining a bank’s popularity in social media and bank growth. Findings – although SLBs draw attention if they concentrate their social media activity on local affairs, conversion of such popularity into a bank growth is difficult to achieve. Research limitations – a relatively limited number of SLBs (111 entities) adopted an active social media policy. As a result, we have to look for social media activity models instead of describing the activity directly with numerous variables employed simultaneously in regressions. Practical implications – in order to reach the highest recognition in social media, a small bank should widely discuss local affairs. Nevertheless, SLBs’ managers should carefully enter the social media world as even suitably selected social media strategy does not automatically lead to economic outcomes. Originality/Value – first, we extend the scarce evidence on social media adoption by financial companies. Second, we clearly define different types of social media activity of local firms. Third, we differentiate between the attention drawn through social media activity and its economic repercussions.

Lipases are a multipurpose enzyme that holds a significant position in industrial applications due to its ability to catalyse a large number of reactions such as hydrolysis, esterification, interesterification, transesterification which makes it a potential candidate. It is also used for the separation of chiral drugs from the racemic mixture and this property of lipase is considered very important in pharmaceutical industries for the synthesis of enantiopure bioactive molecules. Assuming the tremendous importance of lipases, as stereoselective biocatalysts, in pharmaceuticals and various other commercial applications, industrial enzymologists have been forced to search for those microorganisms which are able to produce novel biocatalysts at reasonably high yield. In the present study microbial lipase was isolated from the water sample of pond at Katra, Jammu and Kashmir (India). This enzyme has shown wide specificity and higher enantioselectivity, which make it pharmaceutical important enzyme. To make it economical for industrial application, it was produced on cheap nutrient media using Response Surface Methodology and got maximum production. It was used for resolution of chiral drugs and the significant results obtained during the course of work shall have potential towards pharmaceutical industries.

Plasminogen activator (PAs) are enzymes that convert the zymogen plasminogen into the trypsin-like protease plasmin, which degrades extracellular matrix proteins and fibrin in the course of fibrinolysis, embryogenesis, tissue remodeling and in tumor metastasis. Plasminogen activator inhibitors (PAIs) are important modulators of PA activity. Several proteins have been identified which inhibit at fast rates urokinase (u-PA) and tissue-type PA (t-PA). In the order of inhibition rate constants these are: a) PAI-1, present in human plasma and platelet extracts and purified from human endothelial cell, fibrosarcoma cell and melanoma cell conditioned media; b) PAI-2, first identified in extracts of human placenta and later also in extracts and conditioned media of human granulocytes and monocytes; and c) protease nexin, a broad specificity protease inhibitor that was first identified and purified from human fibroblasts. We have chosen to use phorbol myristate acetate (30 ng/ml) stimulated histiocytic lymphoma cells (U-937) for the purification of PAI-2. The concentration of PAI-2 in the conditioned media after three days culture in the absence of fetal calf serum is 5 mg/1 and PAI-2 represents 3% of total protein. PAI-2 was purified by a two step procedure consisting of isoelectric focusing and affinity chromatography on Cibacron-Blue agarose. Two forms of PAI-2 were identified: a 47 kDa, nonglycosylated, pi 5.0 form and a 60 kDa glycosylated, pi 4.4 form. Immunctolot analysis and in vivo protein labeling studies under culture conditions that assure 100% viability of the cells showed that the glycosylated Torn is secreted, whereas the 47 kDa, nonglycosylated form remains intracellular. The glycosylation does not affect the activity of the inhibitors since both forms of PAI-2 react with the same rate with u-PA. PAI-2 is a fast inhibitor of u-PA (kl=9×l05M−1s−1) and two-chain t-PA (kl=2×l05) and a rather slow inhibitor of one chain t-PA (kl=l×l02) and of plasmin (kl×l02), but does not inhibit glandular and plasma kallikrein or thrombin. The inhibition spectrum and the kinetics of inhibition clearly distinguish PAI-2 from PAI-1 (kl of reaction with u-PA and two and one chain t-PA above 107) and from protease nexin, that is an efficient inhibitor also of thrombin and plasmin. We have cloned a 1880 Ip fragment of PAI-2 cDNA and determined its nucleotide sequence. The derived acid sequence reveals that PAI-2 is like PAI-1 and protease nexin a member of the serpin family of proteins and contains arginine at its putative active site. In an attenpt to identify parts of the inhibitor proteins that are responsible for conferring PA specificity to PAI-1 and PAI-2 we have compared the primary structures of PAI-1 and PAI-2 with each other and with antithrombin III (AT III). Surprisingly, PAI-2 exhibits no homology with PAI-1 in the region close to the active site except for the active site arginine, whereas, in that region, AT III showed three and seven conserved aminoacids when compared to PAI-1 and PAI-2, respectively. This finding suggests that other regions than those close to the active site contribute to the specificity of PAIs.Plasma concentrations of PAI-2 were measured by a specific radioimmunoassay in over 50 healthy individuals, PAI-2 levels were below detection limit (15 ng/ml) in half of the saitples. Maximal concentrations encountered were in the 30 ng/ml range. PAI-2 measurements in over 300 hospitalized patients demonstrated significantly elevated PAI-2 concentrations only in pregnant women. Measurements in various stages of pregnancy showed a steady increase of PAI-2 from below detection limit in nonpregnant women to values of 250 ng/ml at term and of PAI-1 frcm 25 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml. Unlike to PAI-1 concentrations that normalize rapidly after delivery, PAI-2 concentrations remain significantly elevated for several days.

Platelet membrane glycoproteins lib and Ilia form Ca++-dependent heterodimer complexes that contain binding sites for fibrinogen and therefore are relevant to the ability of platelets to aggregate together. In this study we investigated the effects of extracellular Ca++ on the stability and expression of IIb-IIIa complexes using a IIb-IIIa complex-specific monoclonal antibody M148. Its specificity was examined using crossed immunoelectrophoresis: the antibody reacted only with intact IIb-IIIa complexes and not with either glycoprotein alone.SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of immunoprecipitates of soluble glycoproteins that interacted with Ml48 showed that lib and Ilia were present as complexes in Ca++-depleted media at 25°C, pH7.4. However, Ca++-depletion at 37°C, pH7.4 or 37°C, pH8.7 or 25°C, pH8.7 caused dissociation of the complexThe effect of extracellular Ca++ on the expression of IIb-Illa complexes on the surface of intact platelets was studied by a technique which is based upon indirect binding of M148 using a fluorescent- labelled second antibody (FITC-RAM) and measuring the fluorescence per platelet using the FACS IV cytofluorometer. Intact platelets were incubated in Ca++-depleted media at 25°C, pH7.4 or 37°C, pH7.4 either (i) prior to or (ii) after adding M148. At 25°C increased M148-binding was observed, compared to the value prior to Ca++-depletion. This increased binding could be reversed by adding Ca++ back to the preparation. Under condition (i) at 37°C a marked decrease in M148 binding was observed, which could not be reversed by restoring Ca++, while under condition (ii) at 37°C the results were the same as at 25°C.Our studies demonstrate that (a) Ca++-depletion at 37°C and/or alkaline pH causes dissociation of the Ilb-IIIa complex (b) Ca++ depletion at 25°C possibly alters distribution of the complexes thereby increasing their availability to the antibody and (c) M148 prevents the dissociation of complexes in Ca++-depleted media at 37°C, possibly by holding lib and Ilia together

Since the realities of today’s world are full of disturbing events such as wars, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, violent crimes, the news of which is instantly transmitted through the media around the world, the subject’s sense of psychological security is severely threatened. Furthermore, globalisation processes and the transition from an industrial and post-industrial to an information society have greatly intensified the processes of inter-ethnic interaction through active internal and external migration, tourism, modern information and communication technologies, etc. The need to adapt to life in the new country of residence for migrants and to face the transformation of their familiar environment and anxiety regarding their own group status for the population of host countries, make the issue of psychological security be of the highest relevancy. In this context, a study of acculturation expectations of the host population and security needs satisfaction among residents of three regions of the Russian Federation was undertaken upon the basis of the method of the ‘Assessment of Personal Satisfaction with Security Needs’ (O.Y. Zotova), and the acculturation analysis technique suggested by J. Berry, and modified by Z.H. Lepshokova, A.N. Tatarko. The study has shown that priorities in the choice of acculturation strategies across regions that determine the nature of inter-ethnic interaction are differentiated by region, their link to psychological security is present, although not always obvious, and demonstrates regional specificity due to the action of a number of additional factors.

A hybrid human cDNA was constructed by ligation of a cDNA fragment of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), encoding 5∲-untranslated, the pre-pro region and amino acids Ser 1 through Thr 263, with a cDNA fragment of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA), encoding amino acids Leu 144 through Leu 411. The hybrid cDNA was expressed in Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells and the translation product purified from the conditioned cell culture media in the presence of aprotinin. On SDS-gel electrophoresis under reducing conditions, the protein migrated as a single band with approximate Mr 70,000 and on immunoblot-ting, it reacted with rabbit antisera raised against human t-PA and against human u-PA. The urokinase-like amidolytic activity (S-2444) of the protein’ was 320 IU/mg but increased to 43,000 IU/mg after treatment with plasmin, which resulted in conversion of the single chain molecule (t-PA/scu-PA) to a two-chain molecule (t-PA/tcu-PA).Both proteins activated plasminogen directly with Michaelis constant (Km) 1.5 μM and catalytic rate constant (km2) 0.0058 s-1 for t-PA/scu-PA and with K = 80 μM and = 5.6 s-1 for t-PA/tcu-PA. CBNr-digested fibrinogen stimulated the activation rate of plasminogen with t-PA/tcu-PA (increase of k2/Km of 88-fold).Both t-PA/scu-PA and t-PA/tcu-PA bound specifically to fibrin albeit ^np$re weakly than t-PA. In an in vitro system composed of a human I-fibrin labeled plasma clot immersed in human plasma, the t-PA/tcu-PA hybrid has a higher fibrin-selectivity of clot lysis than tcu-PA, but this difference was not evident between t-PA/scu-PA and scu-PA. The stability of the t-PA/scu-PA hybrid in plasma was much higher than that of the t-PA/tcu-PA hybrid, a difference comparable to that between scu-PA and tcu-PA.It is concluded that these t-PA/u-PA hybrid proteins combine fibrin-affinity of t-PA with the enzymatic properties of u-PA (either scu-PA or tcu-PA), resulting in improved fibrin-mediated plasminogen activation.

Consideration of aspects of the functioning of mass media in society requires a comprehensive approach based on universal media theory. The article presents an attempt to consider public events in terms of a functional approach to understanding the media, proposed by media theorist Dennis McQuayl in the theory of mass communication. Public events are analyzed, on the one hand, as a complex object of journalistic reflection and, on the other hand, as a situational media that examines the relationship of agents of the social and media fields in the space of communication interaction. Taking into account philosophical approaches to the interpretation of the concept of event, considering its semantic spectrum, specificity of use and synonyms in the Ukrainian language, a working definition of the concept of public event is given. Based on case-analysis of public events, In accordance with the functions of the media the functions of public events are outlined. This is is promising for the development of study on typology of public events in the context of mass communication theory. The realization of the functions of public events as situational media is illustrated with such vivid examples of cultural events as «Gogolfest» and «Book Forum in Lviv». The author shows that a functional approach to understanding public events in society and their place in the space of mass communication, opens prospects for studying the role of media in reflecting the phenomena of social reality, clarifying the presence and quality of communication between media producers and media consumers.
