Texto completo da fonteThe main objective of this thesis is to make a thorough study on the genetic admixture of Argentina. Other aims are to analyze the regional distribution of the admixture frequencies, and to compare them with the corresponding historical and demographic processes. Furthermore, it also analyses the admixture patterns according to the type of genetic marker used, and its correspondence with population patterns. Alu markers are a useful tool for studies in genetics of human populations. In the first two studies of this thesis, a set of Alu markers from autosome and X chromosomes were used for the first time in the city of Bahía Blanca to characterize the current population of this city and the region. Furthermore, Alu X chromosome markers were used for the first time in any sample of Argentina for population analyses purposes. The city of Bahía Blanca occupies a strategic place in Argentina, south of the Pampean region and in the northeast corner of the Patagonia. For the first study, a set of 19 Alu polymorphisms of a sample of Bahía Blanca was analyzed. The total sample has been subdivided into two groups: Bahía Blanca Original and Bahía Blanca Mix. Allele frequencies and gene diversity values in Bahía Blanca fit well into the European ranges. Though, interestingly, when the general sample is divided, Bahía Blanca Original appears slightly closer to Amerindians in contrast to Bahía Blanca Mix. In the second study, 10 Alu elements from the X chromosome are analyzed to characterize the genetic composition of the city’s population, to compare it with other populations around the world, and to explore the usefulness of X-chromosome markers for human population genetics purposes. In the Bahía Blanca sample, 7 of 10 Alu insertion frequencies are polymorphic. Genetic relationships illustrate the intermediate position of Bahía Blanca compared with groups in other regions. Admixture results of the Bahía Blanca sample for X-chromosome markers indicate similar proportions of Native American and European parental contributions and a minor sub- Saharan African contribution. These X-chromosome data are clearly different to those estimated from autosomal Alu markers in the same populations, but with a relative similarity to ADMIX data from mtDNA in human groups of Southern Argentina that stress the Native Amerindian contribution. In the third study, the whole territory is divided into regions, according to geographical and historical data. The analysis is based on the genetic composition of the populations for each of the regions. In addition, a comparison is made based on the type of markers used. The data show a great regional diversity and heterogeneous country. On the other hand, the results underline the sex biased contribution due to sex biased migration in Argentina, where there is a major Native American contribution through the maternal via (up to 86%), and a major European contribution through the paternal via (up to 96%).

Texto completo da fonteThis research stems from my questioning regarding the lack of research of precolonial archaeological sites and their almost complete absence in the new industry of tourism. I chose my field site on the city of Granada because of the historical importance in the economy of the country, its foundation as the first establishment of Spanish colonizers, and its centrality today in Nicaraguan tourism. Babb (2004) argues that the introduction to tourism industry provides the opportunity to the Nicaraguan government to remake its image to the outside. This remaking of the country’s image will affect how Nicaraguans view themselves. In that sense my main question is: what are the effects of tourism on the identity of granadinos? I argue that the Nicaraguan government takes an active position in presenting tourists with a modernized (not indigenous or black) Nicaraguan community by silencing their past and present, and presenting to tourists only the European heritage of the country; such narratives gives a partial representation of the Nicaraguan identity to foreign visitors; at the same time it projects and naturalizes Nicaraguan identity as “mestizo.” I conclude tourism narratives are reinforcing a mestizo identity through the colonial heritage. Young mestizos as well as indigenous people continue to admire and emulate foreigners’ accents, clothing, sports, hairdo, etcetera.. I believed that the reason for these changes were rooted in the introduction of tourism and new cultural expressions, however, from this research I concluded that is rooted in the effects of the colonial period on the identity of the population. For centuries the Spanish crown and later the national governments eroded the foundation of the indigenous identity, thus the origins of mestizo identity as well. Thereby creating an identity crisis among both ethnic groups and a deep tension on the subject of identity, furthering the racialization of indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. Mestizaje successfully silenced indigenous populations, and ignored the indigenous origin of mestizos. However, currently mestizos do participate in indigenous cultural expressions departing from the hegemonic concept of mestizo - as in complete opposition to indigenous identity -, although they deny or ignore and racialize indigenous people. I consider that the introduction of tourism has brought changes in the Nicaraguan population. The government narratives based on colonial identities create a new environment where colonial relationships are reproduced. In my opinion this is a negative impact of tourism, however, it may lead to new conversations about colonialist interactions, ethnic identity and racism that remain covert in the everyday lives of Nicaraguans.

Texto completo da fonteThis research is intended to contribute to the academic discussion about the origin of the food habits of Colombia, the origin of the products included in its typical meals and preparation techniques thereof. This paper presents an inquiry into the mutual influence following the encounters between the pre-Columbian, Spanish and African cultures in the process of discovery, conquest and colonization of the American territory by Spain with special attention to the process experienced by Colombia. To understand the phenomenon of food mestization, it is essential to clarify the sociological, economic and technological conditions of the cultures that came into contact in this process, and the diversity and access to resources that were available for the production and consumption of food. An extensive literature review and a fieldwork were carried out. The selection of the sources were chosen to consolidate an anthropological perspective and historiographical to account for the impact that this encounter of cultures had not only in the principal native tribes of Colombia and main American civilizations (Inca, Maya and Aztec) at the time of the conquest but also to explain the food and diets habits of today's native tribes and major urban centres and surrounding areas in Colombia that derives from food mestization. It is considered here, the sociological and anthropological features of technologies for food production and consumption, its agriculture complexity, the availability of products and the level of development of the tool used for food processing, as raw material as well as in preparation for consumption. The same type of analysis is carried out for the three cultures mentioned, taking into account the role that each group played during the process of conquest and colonization, since it will determine their level of participation, the contribution of the products, the preparation of food as well as the acceptance level of consumption of certain products. The fieldwork was intended to establish the type of contribution from the three cultures following the conquest in the current diet, pointing out the alteration and enrichment of the dietary habits of the natives. The fieldwork focused on the following questions: What native (tribes) inhabited the area? What was their food? What was the food mestization? What was the Spanish and African contribution? And what are the most representative foods in the diet of the inhabitants of each region?

Texto completo da fonteResearch on national identity and ethnicity show that, statistically, the degree of identification with the social category of mestizo is associated with identification with the social category of Peruvian. However, at a discursive level, it is a category that has no clear definition or delimitation. Thus, by a qualitative methodology approach, this work explores the social representations of mestizaje, and mestizo, in relation to the construction of national identity. Twenty interviews were conducted with undergraduate students and graduates of university degrees, with ages between 22 and 26 years old, forming two groups: Social science careers and other careers. Overall, it was found that the mestizo and mestizaje are terms that refer to racial and cultural mix, and their association with diversity makes them not have a clear delimitation in the definition. Then, identification with the category is based on the motivations of self-esteem and membership in a social group. It is also recognized that the mestizo is part of the social category of Peruvian. However, its lack of use in current social dynamics generates attitudes of indifference, and subtracts relevance in the current definition of national identity. Thus, mestizaje is recognized as a past identity discourse. Nowadays, it is the discourse of entrepreneurship which is current. On the other hand, greater complexity is evident in the speech of the group with education in Social Sciences. Finally, it is recognized that the redefinition of mestizaje in its cultural dimension could help generate a cohesive identity based on respect for diversity.
