This chapter is concerned with a single consideration: the degree of proportionality between a light signal and its resulting electrical output. This is formally referred to as linearity, which depends on the suitability of the chosen PMT and the mode of operation (pulsed or analogue). Applications fall into two groups: analogue operation (DC) and transient applications. Linearity in a pulsed mode of operation concerns both pulse height (charge) and the rate of events. Generally, in the DC mode, only the mean anode current is relevant. Methods for determining both forms of non-linearity are presented, based on actual measurements. Test methods using multiple light sources, bootstrapping, single step (piggyback), and shot noise are investigated. A method for uncovering non-linearity in high-Z scintillators by using coincident gamma emissions (60Co) is demonstrated. An analytical means for correcting results at the 1 % level is provided.

Resumo:
There are three experimental methods for quantifying the flux of light incident on a photocathode: counting the anode output pulses initiated by photoelectrons—known as photon counting; measuring the DC current flowing at the anode—referred to as analogue detection, or charge integration; and determining the rms noise in the anode current—known as shot noise power detection. The statistical performances of the three methods, based on weighting factors, are compared, revealing the theoretical superiority of the photon-counting method. Optimal time allocation between signal and background measurement is derived for photon counting. An amplifier discriminator is the simplest and preferred instrumentation for photon counting, but setting the optimal counting threshold is ultimately a matter of judgement. This is because the plateau has a different slope for signal, background, and afterpulses. Rudiments of signal recovery instrumentation covering boxcar integrators, lock-in detection, and synchronous signal averaging are given.

Despite advances in chemotherapeutic regimens, ovarian cancer has a poor prognosis. Therefore important effective treatments are urgently needed. Many studies have reported that the immune system plays a critical role in disease progression and overall survival. One known effective immunotherapy is the dendritic cell (DC)-based vaccine pulsed with tumor-associated antigens. This chapter reports on a method of production of a novel DC-based vaccine. The key technologies are (a) monocyte collection without leukapheresis, (b) monocyte expansion, (c) production of dendritic cells, (d) multiple overlapping long peptides with heat shock protein 70, and (e) combination immunotherapy approach. The next generation of immunotherapy for ovarian cancer will be focused on combination approaches that simultaneously augment immunity while preventing local immune suppression. Possible combinations which might be useful to help patients with ovarian cancer are summarized in this chapter.

This chapter describes a new method for determining the size of the underground cash economy for commercial sex in seven major US cities: Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Miami, San Diego, Seattle, and Washington, DC. In this innovative methodology, the operating assumption of the process is that estimates of the size of various domains of the underground economy are more accurate when comparative data across time and different locations are taken into account and when estimates of the size of one domain of the underground economy are forced to balance estimates of other domains in the underground economy with which they coincide. This method is used to derive a more rigorous estimate of the underground commercial sex economy and shed more light on its structure. To estimate its size accurately, simultaneous estimates are obtained for the size of the cash-based trade in illegal drugs and illegal firearms in each city.

Understanding change is essential in most scientific fields. This is highlighted by the importance of issues such as shifts in public health and changes in public opinion regarding politicians and policies. Nevertheless, our measurements of the world around us are often imperfect. For example, measurements of attitudes might be biased by social desirability, while estimates of health may be marred by low sensitivity and specificity. In this book we tackle the important issue of how to understand and estimate change in the context of data that are imperfect and exhibit measurement error. The book brings together the latest advances in the area of estimating change in the presence of measurement error from a number of different fields, such as survey methodology, sociology, psychology, statistics, and health. Furthermore, it covers the entire process, from the best ways of collecting longitudinal data, to statistical models to estimate change under uncertainty, to examples of researchers applying these methods in the real world. The book introduces the reader to essential issues of longitudinal data collection such as memory effects, panel conditioning (or mere measurement effects), the use of administrative data, and the collection of multi-mode longitudinal data. It also introduces the reader to some of the most important models used in this area, including quasi-simplex models, latent growth models, latent Markov chains, and equivalence/DIF testing. Further, it discusses the use of vignettes in the context of longitudinal data and estimation methods for multilevel models of change in the presence of measurement error.

The chapter begins with a description of the scalar control of PMS motors. The fundamentals of PMS motor vector control (VC) are then presented with an eye on the analogy with DC motor operating principles. The VC of surface-mounted permanent magnet pole motors and interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors are presented in various reference frames. Current and voltage operating limits are incorporated into the control systems. Flux control modes of operation of PMS motors together with the corresponding control means in different reference frames are also presented in detail, as a particular feature of this book. These include maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control, maximum torque per voltage control, and unity power factor control. Finally, loss minimization control by offline and online strategies is elaborated after presenting the method of motors loss reduction and the PMS motor loss modeling.

This article discusses the use of nanoSQUIDs for investigating small magnetic systems. It begins with an overview of the basics of superconducting quantum interference devices, focusing on how a dc SQUID operates and the use of resistively and capacitively shunted junction model to describe the phase dynamics of Josephson junctions (JJs). It then considers the motivation for using nanoSQUIDs, along with the importance of their size and geometry. It also evaluates micro- and nanoSQUIDs made of various types of JJs including nanoSQUIDs based on sandwich-like junctions, constriction-like junctions, and proximized structures. After reviewing different nanoSQUID readout methods that can be used to directly sense the stray magnetic field created by a nanoscale magnetic sample, the article concludes by highlighting some of the practical constraints and challenges encountered in using nanoSQUID technology, including particle positioning with respect to the sensor’s surface.

Secondary-electron emission generates gain in conventional vacuum photomultipliers with discrete dynodes. This is a cascade process involving between 6 and 20 elements. Generally, the higher the number of stages, the higher is the gain and similarly for applied voltage. Gain is dependent on the composition of the dynodes, with SbCs and activated BeO being the most common materials. There are ten different dynode types, each of which serves a particular purpose: for example, operation in high magnetic fields and high temperature. The continuous channel dynode is available as a single unit and as a multichannel structure, the microchannel plate. The quality of a dynode system is described by its single-electron response. Discrete dynodes produce a spread in output size whereas the channel devices are generally operated in saturation. Gain may be quoted as DC, G, and pulsed ‹g› and methods for measuring these parameters are given.

This book traces the development of a critical practice within African American literature, art, and activism that identifies and critiques the widespread appropriation of classical tradition to the projects of exceptionalist historiography and cultural white supremacy in the United States. This appropriative method has typically figured the United States as the inheritor of the best traditions of classical antiquity and thus as the standard bearer for the idea of civilization. Where dominant narratives—articulated through political speeches and editorials, poetry and the visual arts, and the monumental architecture of Washington, DC—envision the political project of the United States as modeled on ancient Rome yet destined to surpass it in the unfolding of an exceptional history, the writers, artists, and activists this book considers have connected modern America to the ancient world through the institution of slavery and the geopolitics of empire. The book tracks this critique over more than two centuries, from Phillis Wheatley’s poetry in the era of Revolution, through the antislavery writings of David Walker, William Wells Brown, and the black newspapers of the antebellum period, to the works of Charles Chesnutt, Toni Morrison, and other twentieth-century writers, before concluding with the monumental sculpture of the contemporary artist Kara Walker.
