"Food packaging is intended to protect food and extend its shelf life, but it may affect food quality and safety because of chemical migration. Food quality and safety regarding packaging is a significant global concern. Legislations have an essential role in providing regulatory guidance on quality assurance systems and verifying their implementation as a means of regulatory compliance. The large number of various materials used in the manufacture of packages complicates the evaluation of food–packaging interactions. Boil in the bag applications lead to exposure times of 30 - 120 minutes for complex multilayer laminates, whilst plastic kettles are repeat exposure items, and plastic 'vacuum flasks' have a potential for up to 4 hour

They have heat-resistant, non-stick and water-repellent properties and are used widely in food packaging, textiles, non-stick cookware, cosmetics and fire-fighting foam. They degrade very slowly and are distributed globally. PFAS are found in body fluids and tissues, for example, blood, breast milk and placenta. They are associated with many health problems, including cancer, and may increase breast cancer risk. Animal studies have shown that PFAS exposure may increase the risk of mammary tumours, and in ute

3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, represents a range of technologies that create 3D objects through a layer-by-layer deposition process using digital image files. 3D printing evolved over the past four decades from a prototyping tool to a manufacturing method in its own right in a number of industries and several additive manufacturing processes have matured into robust production technologies for highly customised and bespoke products when produced in small numbers. However, 3D printing technologies at their current stage of evolution are usually not considered commercially via

U.S. food suppliers make claims about their production processes on food packaging that highlight attributes some consumers want while charging a higher price than for unlabeled products. Some labels use such claims as "USDA Organic" and "raised without antibiotics," which require different and more expensive production techniques than conventional agriculture. However, food suppliers can use the label that claims the food is "natural" at a relatively low cost because regulatory agencies treat the claim as meaning nothing artificial was added and the product was minimally processed. Border, Peter. Proposals to increase UK recycling of plastic food packaging. Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.58248/pb39.

Plastic packaging waste has become a key consumer concern. In the UK, over 2.2 million tonnes of plastic packaging enter the consumer market each year. Much of this is used in the food sector because plastic packaging is cheap, light to transport, hygienic, and can be used to extend the product's shelf-life. In the UK around 46% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling, mostly through local authority collections. However several issues with the current systems of plastics recycling persist. This POSTbrief reviews proposals to Defra and HM Treasury to improve plastics recycling in the UK

This study aims to enhance recycled polypropylene (rPP) for yogurt cups, promoting sustainable resource use and waste reduction. Analysis of sorting, recycling, and decontamination shows mechanical recycling of PP effectively generates new products. Experiments reveal pre-sorted, hot-washed, and color-sorted rPP has superior quality and is processable up to 100% recyclate content. Adding a masterbatch additive improves oxidative stability and reduces degradation. Biological, chemical, and sensory analyses confirm rPP cups match virgin PP in odor and appearance, with no mutagenic substances det
