Abstract An architect trying to predict the spatial effect of their design on its inhabitants often faces a dilemma. Their professional experience and personal feeling allows them to intuit its effect. Such intuition, however, might lack legitimacy in the dominant design practice. For over a century, the question of the felt space in architecture has been a topic of theoretical discussion, which led to the insight that the answer might lay not so much in studying the architectural structures, but rather in studying the bodies that inhabit them. And still the dominant architectural practice follows the outdated dualistic (mis-)understanding of the felt space. Another historical development took place in dance. Here, since the 1960s,the traditionally formalistic and objectifying understanding of dance has been strongly influenced by techniques of bodily sensitization, stemming from the field of somatics. In themselves rather diverse, these techniques have been institutionally delineated through the principles of somatic movement education. One of their characteristics is that somatic techniques are constantly re-emerging - not from a priori knowledge but from the study of one’s own body and its interactions with the environment. This article envisages how such principles might be applied to architectural design practice and give rise to new embodied design practices - which might foster architects’ sensory expertise and thus legitimize the felt knowledge in professional contexts.

In 1938 Roberto Burle Marx designed the gardens for the new Ministry of Education building in Rio de Janeiro, a building that had been designed by a team of Brazilian architects, with Le Corbusier acting as consultant. In the 1920s and 1930s, Brazilian radicals, anxious not to perpetuate the dependency of the past, often adopted an irreverent attitude toward European culture, and although Le Corbusier's visits to Brazil in 1929 and 1936 were undoubtedly influential, his ideas were not received uncritically. This paper suggests that Le Corbusier's negative attitude to aspects of the natural landscape of South America could have provided Burle Marx with an incentive for incorporating the forms of that landscape into his gardens for Brazil's first modernist skyscraper.

The transdermal delivery of therapeutic agents amplifying a local concentration of active molecules have received considerable attention in wide biomedical applications, especially in vaccine development and medical beauty. Unlike oral or subcutaneous injections, this approach can not only avoid the loss of efficacy of oral drugs due to the liver’s first-pass effect but also reduce the risk of infection by subcutaneous injection. In this study, a magneto-responsive transdermal composite microneedle (MNs) with a mesoporous iron oxide nanoraspberry (MIO), that can improve the drug delivery efficiency, was fabricated by using a 3D printing-molding method. With loading of Minoxidil (Mx, a medication commonly used to slow the progression of hair loss and speed the process of hair regrowth), MNs can break the barrier of the stratum corneum through the puncture ability, and control the delivery dose for treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA). By 3D printing process, the sizes and morphologies of MNs is able to be, easily, architected. The MIOs were embedded into the tip of MNs which can deliver Mx as well as generate mild heating for hair growth, which is potentially attributed by the expansion of hair follicle and drug penetration. Compared to the mice without any treatments, the hair density of mice exhibited an 800% improvement after being treated by MNs with MF at 10-days post-treatment.

This article examines Wyndham Lewis’ The Caliph's Design alongside German Expressionist architectural design during the years 1918–1920, suggesting Bruno Taut for the role of Lewis’ sought-after ‘single architect with brains’. By analysing the intellectual and ideological context of an architectural project with similar concerns and prejudices it is possible to see Lewis’ post-war pamphlet as an exceptional phase in his writing, in which he teeters on the brink of approving political engagement for the arts and echoes some of the ideas promoted by Germany's Activist programme. These images of revolutionary utopian architecture can then be traced to Lewis’ construction of the Magnetic City in The Human Age.

The surface radiative energy remains the primary component of the energy balance of the earth atmosphere system and is a central determinant of the earth‟s climate. Energy is exchanged between the surface and the air radiatively at visible and infrared wavelengths through conduction, convection or latently. This energy at the surface of earth is important to many inter-related research disciplines such as atmospheric sciences, hydrology, agrometeorology and climatology. The incoming short wave radiation is a primary source for photosynthetic activity and the hydrological cycle. The availability of surface radiation is also important for architects and solar engineers. It gives an accurate estimate of the available solar energy resource. Energy exchange between land and atmosphere are important in climatic processes. In this paper, the diurnal and seasonal dynamics and variations of surface radiation components are investigated. One year data is used to emphasize the separate contribution of each radiation balance component. The analysis shows important results such as

From Alberti to Palladio, Renaissance architects and architectural theorists struggled to interpret the description of the ancient Roman house set forth by Vitruvius in De architectura. The debate concerning the form and function of the atrium-the most essential room of the ancient domus-provides the basis for a case study of the process by which Renaissance readers transformed words into images to visualize the parts of the ancient house. Lacking archaeological remains of the Roman domus, architects were forced to rely on written sources. Their zeal to understand led them to appropriate the philological tools of humanists, explicating Vitruvius's words by reading other texts. The result was a wealth of contradictory information, which permitted, indeed encouraged, a variety of reconstructions of the atrium. During a period of about one hundred years-from the 1450s to the 1560s-the Vitruvian atrium underwent numerous incarnations: a courtyard, a vestibule, a domed octagonal sala, a three-aisled basilica. Despite their often imaginative and probing research, none of the Renaissance architects ever conceived of the atrium exactly as it was in antiquity. Their [mis]interpretations, nonetheless, had an impact on contemporary design. In a period in which patrons wanted houses inspired by antiquity, the reconstructed atriums of Renaissance theorists appeared in the palaces and villas of princes, popes, and cardinals.

This article addresses the attempts in Britain in the 1930s to integrate modernist aesthetics with the home. A number of initiatives during this period were directed towards improving both standards of living and the public's taste: arising from exposure to continental modernism (Adolf Loos, Le Corbusier) and with a fervent belief in the democratisation of the living space, innovators such as Wells Coates, Jack and Molly Pritchard, and Maxwell Fry sought to re-invent the home for the twentieth century. The results were often short-lived, and in some cases, abject failures. Yet the negotiations that these designers, architects, and visionaries made between high-minded aesthetics and the practicalities of quotidian British life reveal much about standards of taste during the 1930s. This article takes two case studies in detail: The Lawn Road Flats – the Isokon Building – in Hampstead, London, and the activities of the Design and Industries Association (DIA). In doing so, I chart the ways in which interior design developed in Britain during the decade before the outbreak of World War Two, and explore how small-scale, short-lived activities in this period laid the foundations for a flowering of new modes of living post-1945.

Understanding grammar is very important for building good sentences. Hence, this study aims to find out the most grammatical error found in students’ corpuses and classify the students’ error. To generate this purpose, the researcher explored the grammatical mistakes made with the aid of using college students at the first semester of Pontianak State Polytechnic as the sample of research. This study was conducted using descriptive research using students’ corpus as the data collection. The results of this study discovered that the addition error is the most frequent type of error made based on the frequency on the percentage that was 39,02%. Furthermore, this kind of error is classified as substantial. As for the other types of errors made by students, namely mis formation with the total of errors as 35.36%, omission of error as 23.17% and error in disordering as 2.44%. It can be concluded that the students made errors due to their background of knowledge and their lack of understanding of English structure.

A recent preoccupation with space and place has drawn together theorists and workers in a wide range of disciplines, including human geographers, archaeologists, architects, cartographers, psychoanalysts, sociologists, poets, novelists – and theatre practitioners. There are therefore a range of lenses, a range of vocabularies, through which site-specific theatre and performance can be considered. In this article, Cathy Turner focuses on Mike Pearson's descriptions of site-specific work, particularly his involvement with archaeology, before proposing that we might find a useful, complementary vocabulary within psychoanalytic theories of object relations. She refers to performances by Lone Twin and to her own work with site-specific company Wrights & Sites, who created An Exeter Mis-Guide and A Courtauld Mis-Guide in 2003. Cathy Turner has produced a number of site-specific ‘mis-guided walks’, tours, and performances in her work with Wrights & Sites since 1998. She recently completed a Research Fellowship at Exeter University, investigating writing processes in contemporary performance, including site-specific work. She is now a Teaching Fellow at Exeter University and an Associate Lecturer at Dartington College of Arts.

Abstract. In cultural heritage, three-dimensional documentation of historic buildings is fundamental for conservation and valorisation projects. In recent years, the consolidated tools and methods: Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and close-range photogrammetry, have been joined by portable Mobile Mapping Systems (MMSs), which can offer significant advantages in terms of speed of survey operations at the price of reduced accuracy. The reduction of survey times and, therefore, costs makes the application of MMS techniques ideal for the preliminary stages of analysis of historical artifacts, when a rapid survey is indispensable for estimating the costs of conservation interventions. In this paper, we present a methodology for the expeditious survey of historic buildings and the surrounding urban fabric that is based on the use of an MMS and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The MMS is the Gexcel Heron MS Twin color. It was used to survey two architecture of interest and the urban context surrounding them from the ground level. The UAV is the DJI Mini 2, used to integrate the terrestrial survey by acquiring the buildings' roofs. The case study presented in the paper is the survey of San Clemente and San Zeno al Foro churches, two historic churches in the city centre of Brescia (Italy). The result are a complete point cloud of the two buildings and a metric virtual tour of all spaces. These results were made available to the architects through the Cintoo web platform to plan future activities.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the correlations between university student mental health and their campus's outdoor environment. Methods: An online survey was designed and distributed to students at Michigan State University, USA. Students were asked questions about their overall mental well-being, as well as questions about their environmental perceptions, outdoor activity, views to nature through windows and safety concerns regarding their outdoor campus environment. Results: The major findings indicate a significant difference in mental health scores for windows in living quarters, where students with living quarter windows had better mental health scores (MHS) than students without living quarter windows. This study also found a marginally significant difference in MHS for students with classroom windows. Other results of this study include a significant difference in MHS for students' perception of safety on campus, outdoor work time, and perception of greenspace on campus. Conclusion: Future campus planner, landscape architects, university planners, and student counselors will use this study to determine what kinds of outdoor spaces should be created and used to improve the well-being of students.

Abstract The bone marrow microenvironment plays an important role in the pathogenesis and perpetuation of stem cell defects in Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). However, while distinct cytogenetic alterations have been described in the stem cell compartment in MDS, the bone marrow stroma has never been shown to be part of the clone. Thus, aberrant epigenetic alterations may be responsible for altered function of bone marrow stroma in MDS. DNA methyl transferase (DNMT) inhibitors, which are therapeutically effective in MDS, affect both hematopoietic cells and the stroma, providing further rationale for studying DNA methylation profiles of bone marrow stroma in this disease. To accomplish this aim, bone marrow mononuclear cells from MDS patients and controls were grown to form adherent cell layers and then depleted for hematopoietic elements by immunomagnetic CD45 negative selection. CD45 negative adherent cells were subsequently expanded and then used for whole genome methylation studies using a recently described novel method, the HELP assay (HpaII tiny fragment Enrichment by Ligation-mediated PCR; Khulan et al, Genome Res. 2006 Aug;16(8)) which uses differential methylation-specific digestion by HpaII and MspI followed by amplification, two color labeling and hybridization to quantify individual promoter CpG island methylation. A custom whole genome human promoter array (Roche-Nimblegen) was used to determine the level of methylation of 25626 gene promoters by calculating HpaII/MspI cut fragment intensity ratio. Global epigenetic profiling revealed that MDS stroma (n=6) was epigenetically distinct from normal bone marrow stroma (n=4) (ANOVA, P<0.0001). Many novel genes that were differentially methylated in MDS stroma, though majority were found to be hypomethylated when compared to normal controls. Growth regulators and transcription factors such as BMP-9, PAX-4, EIF2B1, and BATF-1, were mot significantly hypomethylated. These genes were grouped into functional pathways by Ingenuity Pathway architect and encoded for Cancer related pathways with Hepatocyte nuclear factor- alpha as their central node. In subsequent studies, we profiled stroma from another set of MDS patients who had been treated with the DNMT inhibitor, 5-Azacytidine (n=4). In contrast to untreated MDS patients, there were no significant epigenetic differences between these 5-Azacytidine treated MDS patients and healthy controls (p = NS). These 5-Azacytidine exposed stroma cells did not demonstrate global hypomethylation (as hypothesized after DNMT inhibitor treatment) and were characterized by both hyper- and hypo-methylated loci similar to healthy controls. Thus our results reveal that MDS is characterized by widespread aberrant epigenetic changes in the bone marrow microenvironment. Our results also demonstrate that DNMT inhibitors can alter the epigenomic profiles of stromal cells, and we hypothesize that those stroma effects contribute in part to their clinical efficacy. Overall, these studies underscore the importance of studying the entire bone marrow, including the microenvironment, if we are to improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of MDS and further improve therapy.

ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Protein abnormalities include monoclonal gammopathies of undetermined significance (MGUS) and malignant lymphoplasmacytic tumors such as multiple myeloma (MM), Waldenström macroglobulinemia, and amyloid light-chain amyloidosis. MGUS prevalence increases with age, especially in individuals over 50. MGUS progresses to various lymphoplasmacytic diseases, including smoldering MM and MM. Almost all blood donors (BDs) are asymptomatic but some of them could present protein abnormalities. Our objective was to assess the prevalence and impact of protein abnormalities and monoclonal gammopathies (MGs) on transfusion safety among BDs in Morocco. Methods: Two hundred eighty-one serum samples were collected from BDs aged over 40 years old. Total serum protein measurement and protein electrophoresis were performed using the Architect ci8200 and Capillarys-2-Piercing automated systems, respectively. Immunofixation was conducted using hydrates. Results: Protein levels ranged between 59 and 87 g/L (average = 71.69 ± 4.96 g/L). Our results showed 195 (69.39%) normal profiles, 6 (2.13%) MGs, 14 (4.98%) heterogeneous restriction of γ-globulins, and 66 other abnormalities (23.48%) regarding the levels of albumin and proteins from alpha and beta fractions. Conclusion: Our preliminary results appeal to blood transfusion professionals regarding ethical considerations and transfusion safety. BDs with abnormal protein levels should benefit systematically from diagnostic tests and therapies.

John Nash was a landscaper and architect who extended the category of the picturesque to urban planning in the early nineteenth century. Using a historicist approach based on archival research and literature review, this article discusses how this theoretical and aesthetic movement influenced the transformation of London through the creation of Regent’s Park, St. James’s Park and Regent’s Street. Its conclusions point to a disruptive but cohesive intervention in the transformation of London, resulting in a new front of urban expansion to the west.

The argument of the present text argues that the "New Brutalism", being arguably an architectural debate of British origin, was driven by a universal principle: the intellectual adherence to the problems of its time. The struggle against academicism and historicism, the acceptance of reality and the different ways each culture builds its habitat, and the growing importance given to the users of architecture, are essential points for the post-war revision of architectural models. These principles have awakened the interest of a new generation of Portuguese architects that is increasingly critical and attentive to the international debate, assimilating them through coincidence of interests, rather than through direct connection or influence. The methodology adopted involves recovering some arguments from the 1955 and 1966 texts of the critic Reyner Banham, the main ideologue of New Brutalism, with particular focus on the proposals of the architects Alison and Peter Smithson and their role in the Team 10 group. After introducing the origins and context of the debate, the panorama of the Portuguese situation in those years is outlined, with special focus on the diffusion of the "brand new" generation of architects (roughly those born between the late 1920s and early 1930s) through the initiative of the magazine Arquitectura. Finally, we present the arguments of two representatives of this generation -Nuno Portas and Pedro Vieira de Almeida- whose relationship with brutalism does not lie in aesthetic questions, of form or surface treatment, but in ethical questions, i.e., their commitment to the "social utility of architecture. In a first moment, a debate around collective housing centered on methods and critical positions is exposed, which is complemented in a second moment with a brief approach to a work of architecture in which both have responsibility.

The field of urban planning in Russia (hereinafter — UP) is of particular interest for sociological analysis. By M.S. Larson, results of the activity of architects and town planners are not only material features, but also cultural, behavioral patterns which are inscribed in urban planning projects. In the last decade, professionals, city managers, and developers have faced new challenges related to the quality of the urban environment. The request for new approaches in the field of renovation of urban spaces was formulated both by professionals, representatives of civil, expert communities and grassroots groups, and by government authorities (within the framework of the federal project “Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment”).The focus of this article is the analysis of “urbanistika” (=urban studies and practices) in Russia in 2008-2021, based on materials from expert interviews with professionals with experience in the field of urban planning. Key aspects of the transformation of UP that were identified during the analysis include: 1) marketization of UP, 2) the formation of an individualistic discourse, 3) the formation of a therapeutic discourse, 4) a communicative turn in UP, which is shown by the example of the emergence of new methods (participatory design and others methods aimed at taking into account the opinions of residents during the urban planning process), as well as the emergence of new actors (bloggers and urbanists) in urban discussions and projects.

The article provides an overview of the digitisation project conducted by the Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica (PAAA) in Rome, focusing on an 11.7 km section of the Appian Way. This effort is part of the “Appia Regina Viarum” project, supporting the UNESCO heritage site candidacy of the Appian Way. Advanced sensor technologies, including the Mobile Mapping System (MMS), 360° Cameras, Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), digital cameras, and drones, are employed to collect extensive data sets. The primary goal is to create highly accurate three-dimensional (3D) models for knowledge enhancement, conservation, and communication purposes. Innovative tools are introduced to manage High Resolution 3D textured models, improving maintenance, management, and design processes over traditional CAD methods. The project aims to develop multi-temporal Digital Twins integrated with historical documentation, such as Piranesi’s imaginary views and architect Canina’s monument reconstructions. These informative models function as nodes within the DT, serving the PAAA’s geographic hub by means of an eXtended Reality (XR) platform: the paper proposes bridging the physical object and virtual models, contributing to supporting the operators in the maintenance planning as well as information dissemination and public awareness, offering an immersive experience beyond conventional reality.

The construction industry is a sector that creates employment opportunities for everybody from all backgrounds. A good performance achieved through managing data is one factor that enables the construction industry’s success and development. Unfortunately, data management encounters challenges regarding data safety, due to the implementation of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) (digitalisation). This study sets out to evaluate the effects of risks to data management on the performance of construction projects. This research work used a quantitative methodology and gathered information from different construction professionals in the South African construction industry via a well-structured questionnaire through online platforms. These professionals were quantity surveyors, architects, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers practising for a firm, company, organization, or institution within Gauteng province, South Africa. A random sampling technique was used in this research to ensure that each part and set of individuals had an equivalent possibility of being incorporated into the sample. Of 215 questionnaires sent out, 181 (84.19%) responses were received and used for data analysis. Mean item score (MIS), standard deviation (SD), a non-parametric test, and exploratory factor analysis were used to analyse the retrieved data. Findings revealed that loss of construction project data, loss of confidential information, company image and reputational harm are among the top three effects that risks to data have on people working in the construction sector. This study concluded that these data management risk effects could be prevented if construction project stakeholders were aware of the different data management risks.

AbstractIn this paper, we report our progress on integrating a model‐based system engineering methodology with a system architectural trade study applied to flight control systems of a locally owned and operated, cost effective Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) design utilizing the concepts of Model‐Based Systems Architecture Processes (MBSAP). The primary objective of the UAV is to monitor wildfires and to gather information and to provide surveillance data for predicting and preventing wildfires [1]. We describe our experience with a holistic approach to architect flight controls (the System‐of‐Interest), in a way that is tightly coupled with high‐level stakeholder needs and concerns, operational scenarios, (normal, inadvertent, and mis‐) use cases, Context System, and Enabling Systems.Several architectural variants of the Surface‐less Flight Controls (SFC) were traded. Our systemic approach showed that classical flight controls are feasible for the baseline UAV. It also helped us identify a novel architecture with a potential to drastically improve UAV performance (range, survey time), UAV weight, and specific cost. Our approach has resulted in an architecture that has the potential to significantly reduce the costs of manufacturing as well as operating UAVs, at the same time it drastically improves their performance. This development could mean widely increased availability and improved effectiveness of UAVs in fire detection and prevention.

Abstract Background: The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies characterized by multiple genomic abnormalities. Precise characterization of MDS molecular abnormalities in individual patients and treatment with drugs that target the specific constellation of molecular abnormalities may provide a practical approach in this complex disease. Methods: Therefore, bone marrow cells from 90 MDS patients were molecularly profiled by testing for mutations in the following 14 MDS-specific genes: ASXL1, ETV6, EZH2, IDH1, IDH2, NRAS, CBL, RUNX1, SF3B1, SRSF2, TET2, TP53, U2AF1 and ZRSR2. We used these profiles in a novel predictive simulation software program to create MDS patient avatars. The avatar technology has three layers: the first layer is a proprietary mathematics solver engine architected to handle millions of differential equations representing biological cross-talk reactions needed for modeling MDS physiology; the middle layer is the comprehensive functional proteomics representation of disease physiology network; and the topmost layer is a semiconductor engineering-based automaton engine which allows high-throughput simulation of multi-million interventions through assembly code language. Bone marrow conventional cytogenetics, FISH and molecular profiling data from 90 patients were used in the simulation. A library of over 80 FDA-approved agents was simulated against the predicted dysregulated pathways. A list of predicted drugs where then prospectively validated using in vitro culture of MDS-L cells. Results: Of the 90 MDS patients, the IPSS-R distribution was 25% Very Low, 58% Low, 9% Intermediate, 7% High, and 1% Very High. Median BM blast was 2% (range 0-16%). All 90 patients had detectable genomic abnormalities. 86/90 (96%) of patients had detectable genetic mutations. The 4 patients with undetectable genetic mutations all had structural chromosome abnormalities (e.g., del(11q), +8, del(20q)). Among the 90 patients, recurrent constellations of genomic mutations were identified, which permitted clustering into 63 unique MDS genomic profiles. Using these unique MDS genomic profiles, simulation avatars of dysregulated pathways were created for each MDS patient (Figure 1 as example). Next, we used the MDS avatars to simulate FDA-approved drugs individually and in combinations to predict impact on these dysregulated pathways. Iterative simulations identified 12 new drug regimens depending on the MDS patient's constellation of genomic abnormalities: (1) nelfinavir, (2) bortezomib, (3) metformin + simvastatin, (4) metformin + seliciclib, (5) nelfinavir + bortezomib, (6) nelfinavir + ruxolitinib, (7) nelfinavir + simvastatin, (8) nelfinavir + sorafenib, (9) nelfinavir + trametinib, (10) ponatinib + bortezomib, (11) nelfinavir + ponatinib, and (12) trametinib + simvastatin. In vitro validation experiments of drug regimens with MDS-L cells showed significant, dose-dependent reductions of MDS-L cell viability. Conclusions: This study shows how molecular profiling using 14 genes and a novel simulation method can be used to map dysregulated pathways and predict potentially therapeutic agents for patients with MDS. Results from this study serve as the basis for an MDS clinical study that assigns treatment based on genomic abnormalities. Figure 1. MDS Dysregulated Pathways and Predicted Therapies. Abstract Background: The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies characterized by multiple genomic abnormalities. New technologies are needed that bridge the complex molecular biology of MDS and available therapeutics. Methods: Therefore, we developed a predictive simulation software program to create MDS patient avatars based on disease-specific genomic profile. The MDS avatars were intended to map the complex interplay of dysregulated pathways and predict potential therapeutics. The human MDS-L cell line is one of few bona fide MDS cell lines and was analyzed by conventional G-banding karyotyping, FISH, array CGH and Sanger sequencing of MDS-relevant genes. Using this genomic information, a simulation patient avatar was created. Next, a library of over 80 FDA approved agents was simulated against the dysregulated pathways. A list of predicted drugs where then prospectively validated using in vitro culture of MDS-L cells. Results: The MDS-L cells harbored an activating NRAS mutation (c.35G>C, p.G12A) and complex chromosome abnormalities. The simulation MDS-L patient avatar predicted activation of the RAF-ERK pathway due to NRAS mutation and various copy number variations (CNVs) including high CN of IGFR, AURKA, PAR5 that predicted high AKT activation, high CN of mTOR, high CN of IL6 and JAK3 with predicted activation of STAT3 and STAT5, high CN of MDM4 with predicted lower levels of TP53, high CN of RCE1, MAPK1 and MAP2K1, and low CN of RASA1 and DUSP1 (Figure 1). Given the strong dominance of AKT and ERK loops in this profile (Figure 1), we simulated potential drugs individually and in combinations to predict impact on these pathways. Iterative simulations identified four FDA-approved drugs: (A) nelfinavir and celecoxib acting on AKT, (B) sorafenib and trametinib that inhibit RAF-ERK targets, and (C) statins that inhibit the RAS-RAF-ERK pathway through inhibition of prenylation. In vitro validation experiments showed statistically significant reductions in MDS-L cell viability when treating with nelfinavir alone, celecoxib alone, and enhanced additive reduction in viability with the combination of nelfinavir and celecoxib (Table 1). Conclusions: This study shows how a novel simulation method can be employed to use patient-specific MDS genomic profiling to map dysregulated pathways and predict potentially therapeutic agents. The MDS case presented led to the discovery of a novel combination of nelfinavir and celecoxib. Results from this study serve as the basis for MDS clinical trials that assign treatment based on genetic mutations. Figure 1. Predicted Dysregulated Pathways in MDS-L Cells. MDS-L genomic data was used to generate a map of dysregulated pathways. NRAS mutation is highlighted in blue with mapping of consequent downstream effects. High Copy Number (CN) in red and Low (CN) mutations in purple are also mapped with predicted downstream pathway effects. The totality of dysregulated pathways is predicted to converge on increased cell proliferation and increased cell viability. FDA-approved drugs predicted to impact dysregulated pathways (i.e., celecoxib and nelfinavir) are also shown in the map at critical impact points. Figure 1.

I will argue that in the administrative state, in contrast to classical constitutional theory, the abuse of government power is not something to be strictly minimized, but rather optimized. An administrative regime will tolerate a predictable level of misrule, even abuse of power, as the inevitable byproduct of attaining other ends that are desirable overall. There are three principal grounds for this claim. First, the architects of the modern administrative state were not only worried about misrule by governmental officials. They were equally worried about “private” misrule—misrule effected through the selfinterested or self-serving behavior of economic actors wielding and abusing power under the rules of the 18th-century common law of property, tort, and contract. The administrative state thus trades off governmental and “private” misrule. Second, the rate of change in the policy environment, especially in the economy, is much greater than in the late 18th century—so much greater that the administrative state has been forced, willy-nilly, to speed up the rate of policy adjustment. The main speeding-up mechanism has been ever-greater delegation to the executive branch, accepting the resulting risks of error and abuse. Third, the costs of enforcing legal rules against executive officials are necessarily positive and plausibly large, in part because any institutional monitors created to detect and punish abuses must themselves be monitored for abuse. The architects of the administrative state believed that a government that always forms undistorted judgments, and that never abuses its power, will do too little, do it too amateurishly, and do it too slowly. In that sense, the administrative state constantly gropes towards an institutional package solution that embodies an optimal level of abuse of power.</p>

Abstract 1. Overview of 2nd International Conference on Science in Engineering and Technology - 22nd Sustainable Environment and Architecture (ICoSiET SENVAR 2022) The covid-19 pandemic caused a great shock to people around the world, for it caused a massive scale lockdown in the 21st century. It took millions of lives, affected people’s health [1], and created enormous disruption in education systems in more than 200 countries [2]. Furthermore, Covid-19 also account for unprecedented damage to the global economy[3][4], separating people from their loved ones and friends and transforming our built environment in fear of infection[5]. The use of spaces in our living environment then changes dramatically. The lesson should be drawn from this pandemic, for it can never be predicted when the next one will arrive [6]. A future design of the built environment shall be arranged comprehensively. Not only do we have to consider the socio-economic and sustainable living environment, but also how to create a resilient and healthy built environment. Thus, the impact of the pandemic can be minimised through planning, design, structural, physical and technological means. On the other hand, the pandemic introduces a hybrid life to us where a virtual world has become a necessity. Tantalising global challenges in our degradation environment with energy and natural resources depletion force us to have an energy-conscious awareness while providing a safe, healthy, smart and sustainable living environment. The design of the built environment thus should elaborate the virtual world and reality, which involves advanced and robust information and technology not only for the present situation but also for visionary looking to future needs. Therefore, we promote “the Green-Smart Design and Technology for the Present and the Future Built Environment” as the theme for the 2nd International Conference on Science in Engineering and Technology – 22nd Sustainable Environment and Architecture (ICoSiET SENVAR 2022). The ICoSiET SENVAR 2022 is a joint conference to bridge the role of architecture, engineering, and multi-disciplinary field stakeholders in sharing their precious ideas, theories, concepts, designs, research and experiences in creating a better world for all. This conference is hosted by the Architecture Department of Engineering Faculty, Tadulako University. ICoSiET was first organised in 2020 in Palu, Indonesia and then became a biannual conference to provide an academic forum, especially in engineering. Meanwhile, SENVAR is an annual gathering for scientists, scholars, and architects focusing on discussions related to the natural and built environment, such as building design and architecture, outdoor and indoor comfort, local and global green, urban planning and sustainability. SENVAR was first initiated and started by the late Professor Mas Santosa from the Department of Architecture, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in 2000 as a seminar on environmental architecture; in 2011, it changed the name to Sustainable Environment and Architecture [7]. This year we have the privilege to host ICoSiET and SENVAR and combine them into ICoSiET SENVAR 2022, putting two communities in one frame to be blended in the most recent issue of the smart and sustainable built environment.

AbstractThe reign of Peter the Great is regarded as one of the most significant and contentious epochs in Russian history. It has been customary to view the reforms of the period as either a progressive transformation of an antiquated society or the destructive suppression of traditional Russian culture. This dichotomy rests on an accepted perception of Peter the Great and his reign as rational and secular. This paper attempts to revise this dichotomy by focussing on the Masonic and occult influence prevalent at the Petrine Court. These two complimentary aspects of Petrine society and culture have been censured or overlooked by successive generations of historians, yet they exerted a considerable hold on some of the most powerful statesmen of the period, including the Tsar himself. The importance of studying Masonic and occult influence in Petrine Russia lies in the fact that it can help to overcome the starkly secular image of Peter the Great, without denying the progressive nature of his reforms. The first section of the article examines the powerful symbolic representations of the Tsar as a "Mason King" and architect of a new Russia. It reveals a concerted campaign to portray Peter the Great as a new King David, leading his people—new Israelites—to their promised land and a New Jerusalem, crystallised by the foundation of St. Petersburg. This is then followed by examining how Peter the Great's worldview—encompassing religious tolerance, a scientific curiosity open to esotericism and a passion for chivalrous societies—was wholly compatible with the ideals of Freemasonry as it developed at the beginning of the eighteenth-century.The second part of the paper focuses on the Masonic links and strong occult interests of Jacob Bruce (1669-1735), Feofan Prokopovich (1681-1736) and Robert Erskine (1677-1718)—three of the most prominent statesmen in Petrine Russia. Bruce came from a Scottish Jacobite family and played an active role in practically all fields of Russian state life, ranging from the military to the promotion of science and education. Prokopovich was the most eminent ecclesiastic figure in Petrine Russia and a loyal stalwart of Peter the Great's state reforms. Erskine, like Bruce, also descended from a powerful Jacobite family in Scotland. He enjoyed a close relationship with Peter the Great and was his Chief Physician and Head of the Russian Medical Chancellery, as well as being Director of the St. Petersburg Kunstkamera and Library. This triumvirate played an active role in transforming the Russian State, but do not represent the archetypal embodiments of purely rational and secular enlighteners. They all displayed a strong religiosity and a marked interest in esoteric matters and Bruce and Erskine, in particular, had strong ties to Jacobite Freemasonry. Peter the Great displayed similar interests and acted as their enthusiastic patron. Thus, it is hoped that this paper will reveal the significant extent to which Masonic ideals and a fascination with the occult were rife at the Petrine Court and helped to shape the transformations enacted during this pivotal period in Russian history.

Étienne Souriau was a refined and demanding thinker, with an aristocratic demeanour, far removed from the currents of ideas dominant in his time. A difficult and erudite author, out of tune with the times he lived in, he would seem the least likely candidate to appeal to a hurried and globalised public like that of the twenty-first century. A sophisticated representative of a rationalist positivism, no stranger to the Husserlian canon and not even insensitive to the motivations dear to the gnoseological debate of Cartesian and Kantian matrix (as well as to the major themes of classical metaphysics), Souriau pursues the ideal of a constructive philosophy, capable of understanding – and at the same time favouring – the advancement of the creative process conceived as a set of poetic acts and progressive dynamic operations. In his texts, Souriau is attentive to grasping the correspondences, exchanges and reciprocal transitions between one mode of existence and another, as well as the resonances between the various art forms in the different fields of knowledge, testing an original method that is epistemologically very fruitful. The aim of this monographic issue of Aisthesis dedicated to Étienne Souriau is to explore his thought in its multiple aspects, in order to measure its topicality in relation to the themes and problems that characterise contemporary philosophical debate, with particular reference to aesthetics and ontology as well as to the dense network of connections between the two fields. One of the most interesting characteristics of Souriau’s thought that has stood the test of time would appear to be its multifacetedness: the quality of lending itself to being applied even to spheres that are apparently very distant from reflection on art, such as cultural anthropology, political philosophy or morality. It seemed to us that it largely owes its relevance precisely to the intersections between one field of knowledge and another. The issue contains twelve contributions on Souriau that explore his main aspects in depth. They range from analyses devoted to the architecture of Souriau’s thought (his general philosophy) in the essays by Dominique Chateau and Filippo Domenicali, which can furnish a useful overall picture of the man, to essays that attempt to focus on the more properly ontological core of this thought, such as those devoted to the arabesque motif (Luigi Azzariti-Fumaroli), the theory of the soul (Sjoerd Van Tuinen) or the multiplicity of worlds (Noëlie Plé). Interspersed between these are contributions that focus more on the comparison between Étienne Souriau’s thought and the philosophers of his time, such as Dufrenne (Maryvonne Saison), or with well-known later philosophers who explicitly referred to him, prolonging his creative impetus, such as Gilles Deleuze (Casey Boyle) and Bruno Latour (Aline Wiame), the true architect of the current Souriau “comeback”. Finally, in addition to essays of a more theoretical nature, there are contributions that attempt to re-evaluate certain aspects of Souriau’s aesthetics, such as the fruitfulness of the cues that can come from his thought for the debate on animal aesthetics (Maddalena Mazzocut-Mis and Andrea Scanziani), or the possible topicality of his theory of forms (Isabelle Rieusset-Lemarie). In the “Miscellaneous” section, this issue hosts a number of studies that aim to explore the aesthetic implications of new technologies, the themes of ecological aesthetics, as well as to offer an unusual profile of Baumgarten.
