This study assesses decadal changes (2005–2015) in the trace and heavy metal element contents of soils from four land use types at a desert oasis and also determines associated ecological and health risks. Concentrations of boron, molybdenum, manganese, zinc, copper, cadmium, lead, and mercury increased significantly over the decade. Farmland ecosystems had higher concentrations of soil trace and heavy metal elements than natural ecosystems, but intercropping with alfalfa tended to reduce concentrations. The environmental pollution assessment indicated that soils were moderately affected by hu

Abstract Two field experiments were done at a private farm in Kalabsho and Zayian district, Dakhlia Egypt, throughout 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons, to evaluate the promotive role of chitosan (Chi, 250 and 500 mg/l) and/or sodium metasilicate (Si, 125 and 250 mg/l) foliar application on barley growth, yield, and some physiological attributes in newly reclaimed soil. Application of Si or Chi concentrations showed an improvement in plant growth as: plant height, tiller number per plant, flag leaf area and shoot dry weight; photosynthetic pigments; organic osmolytes; ion percentage, as well as

Egypts population was projected to increase from 20 million in the 1960s to 67 million by 2000. With this increase in the population, an increase in food production of 200% to 300% is become necessary to meet food demands. In addition to the increasing demand for food, the population increase will result in increased amounts of human wastes. This will, in tum, need to be disposed of in ways other than the traditional dumping in the nearest stream or the Nile River. It is therefore vitally important to utilize as much as possible of this human waste (biosolids) as an organic fertilizer and soil

Onions are highly responsive to endomycorrhizae and improved plant growth is among the benefits associated with this symbiosis, particularly in low phosphorus soils. Although this crop is grown extensively in organic soils, few studies have been conducted on these. Onion plants (Allium cepa L. cv. Norstar) were inoculated with Glomus aggregatum Schenck & Smith, Glomus clarum Nicolson & Schenck, Glomus fasciculatum Gerdemann & Trappe, Glomus intraradix Schenck & Smith and Glomus versiforme (Karst.) Due to the globalization of the world economy existing ports are being developed and new ports are being built in order to cope with the increasing volume of goods in transit. New container terminals or port extensions are mostly built on reclaimed land from the sea. As the nourishments with their low or medium density of the fill provide insufficient bearing capacity to take up the final loads of the container terminals, the long-term stability and trafficability of the gained land must be improved. An economic measure to improve the bearing capacity of existing and newly developed terminal a

Abstract Egypt has a long tradition of using chemical fertilizers, its first use of Chilean nitrates dating back to 1902. For over thirty years all chemical fertilizers were imported, until the local production of phosphate fertilizers started in 1936 and later the production of nitrogen fertilizers in 1951. The great demand for food, highly productive soil, availability of good quality irrigation water, optimum climatic conditions, and the use of new technology have contributed to a continuous increase in fertilizer production and thus, in fertilizer use. The increase in fertilizer use is inf

The design of open cut excavations in newly reclaimed land overlying soft soils is often highly sensitive to the undrained strength parameter values. Under such circumstances, the use of the Observational Method may introduce significant programme and quantity savings by allowing the designer to adopt best estimate, rather than moderately conservative parameters. The Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF) is located on newly reclaimed land located to the East of Chek Lap Kok Island. The SVB sits directly above the Tuen-Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnels (TMCLKL). The original design required installation of over 330 number of shaft grouted piles. Due to the presence of the tunnels the pile design was relatively inefficient and required 3m thick pilecaps. An alternative design was developed to delete the piled foundations by carrying out additional ground improvement within the so
