This study assesses decadal changes (2005–2015) in the trace and heavy metal element contents of soils from four land use types at a desert oasis and also determines associated ecological and health risks. Concentrations of boron, molybdenum, manganese, zinc, copper, cadmium, lead, and mercury increased significantly over the decade. Farmland ecosystems had higher concentrations of soil trace and heavy metal elements than natural ecosystems, but intercropping with alfalfa tended to reduce concentrations. The environmental pollution assessment indicated that soils were moderately affected by hu

This paper presents the field investigation of a major landslide that occurred in a newly dredged slope for port development in the city of Tianjin, northern China. The dredged slope comprised underconsolidated soft clay of recent marine and river delta deposits. The landslide consisted of a number of individual slides that occurred sequentially and extended retrogressively and laterally into reclaimed land. It lasted for about 1 h, occupying a plan area that is about 200 m long and 150 m wide in the reclaimed land. The failed soil mass was estimated to have a volume of between 700 000 and 800

Understanding how reclamation practices influence plant community assembly and succession is an important step in developing realistic indicators and targets for reclamation of oil sands mine sites to upland forest ecosystems. We currently have a poor understanding of factors affecting plant community assembly and succession in reclaimed oil sands sites. Through synthesis of research completed over the last 24 years, we identify four key findings: (i) use of surface soil and forest floor material salvaged from mined areas increases plant species cover, richness, and diversity relative to the u

Sustainability of intensive irrigated agriculture in Egypt has become a critical issue, as land and water resources are limited on the one hand and population is increasing rapidly on the other. Salinization, heavy input use, nutrient export and pollution all threaten the health of soils that have been feeding Egypt for centuries. At the same time, the build-up of newly reclaimed desert soils to economically sustainable productive capacity is a major challenge. Soil degradation and low productivity are among the major agricultural problems facing farmers of the newly reclaimed agricultural area in the Nile Delta region, Egypt. High content of clay and silt characterizes the soil texture of all farms in the area, while farmers still rely on the traditional mole drainage (MD) system to reduce the salinity of the farm soil. We present a comparison of innovative geo-resistivity methods to evaluate mole drains and the salinity affected clay soils.
