Texto completo da fonteMicrowave near-field microscopes are emerging tools for material characterization. In this work, a near-field probe was designed, described and analyzed in terms of performance and resolution. This probe has been associated with two microscopes in the near microwave field. The first microscope is based on intensity reflectometry and evaluated the quality and lateral resolution of the probe. This resolution can reach a subwavelength dimension, opening the way to local characterization of materials. The second experiment presents the design of a materials characterization bench. This system uses an I/Q mixer to extract information in intensity and phase of near-field interaction. Finally, the last experiment concerns electromagnetic injection in the near field of an out-of-band signal on a communication module. The overall results show that the near-field injection experiment has the potential to become an important metrology tool for susceptibility studies

The fuel planning for U.S. Naval operations at sea is reactive and relies upon pen and paper calculations. Decisions on where and when to refuel are complex and need a Decision Support System (DSS) to help planners maximize the benefits of the limited fuel resource. This thesis defines requirements and outlines a feasible design to develop a Naval Fuel Management System (NFMS). The variables that fuel planning rely upon are not just ship course and speed, but also the weather at the time a ship travels through a particular area. The most efficient plant configuration plays a factor in the fuel plan as well. Additionally, there are numerous ports and oilers available at any given time. Up-to-date accurate weather forecast databases are available, predicting currents and winds, which will affect the ship in the future. Fuel burn charts have been developed for each ship class outlining the most efficient plant configuration for given speeds. Transportation analysis has shown that an optimal path exists for this class of complex problems. By combining these technologies into one system, an application can be developed to accurately plan fueling operations in the future, making Navy refueling more efficient.

Texto completo da fonteNonlinear effects in optical fiber set the ultimate limit to the channel capacity in long-haul optical transmission systems. Advanced nonlinear compensation techniques such as digital backpropagation (DBP) have been proposed as a solution to overcome the channel capacity crunch. However, given theircomputational complexity, in a practical environment their performance gainremains very limited. This triggered a search for a novel communication system design that takes fiber nonlinearity into consideration. A new nonlinearcommunication method, based on the theory of the inverse spectral transform, has been proposed to overcome the nonlinear capacity crunch. Thismethod, originally proposed by Hasegawa in 1993 and called eigenvalue (ormulti-soliton) communication, is based on the fundamental observation thatthe nonlinear spectrum of an optical signal is invariant (except for a triviallinear phase shift) upon propagation in the fiber channel, as described bythe nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). This means that if the directspectral transform (also known as nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT)) ofthe received signal can be computed, the eigenvalue spectrum can be fullyrecovered. This thesis focuses on a NFT-based communication technique known as nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (NFDM). The NFDM optical systemis numerically assessed and experimentally demonstrated. First, the structure of the proposed single-polarization NFDM system using the continuousspectrum in the normal dispersion regime is presented. To that end, theNFT of the vector NLSE, or Manakov system, was numerically developed.Based on these algorithms the NFDM method was extended to polarizationdivision multiplexed (PMD) systems, and experimentally validated for thefirst time using the continuous spectrum. Finally, the experiment will bereplicated in the anomalous dispersion regime.Additional numerical studies are presented, in order to investigate the implementation challenges of the proposed NFDM techniques for the continuousspectrum modulation

Texto completo da fonteThe thesis is articulated in three axes. A first part was devoted to the improvement of the normal flux method (NFM) whose development was initiated in a previous thesis. This line of research, which was not part of theoriginal subject of the thesis, was initiated in order to answer to the industrial problems of NEXTFLOW SOFTWARE, financier of the thesis. The developments made it possible to adapt to the NFM formalism different aspects (modeling of viscosity, detection of free surface, particle disorder) as well as to improve the precision of the operators. The second part of the thesis focused on the development of a method of adaptive particle refinement, and more particularly its effectiveness in a context of industrial applicability. Particular emphasis has been placed on the robustness, accuracy and calculation time of the state of the art of refinement methods. From there, strong limitations have emerged and have led to develop a refinement approach inspired by the AMR. The developments have been validated on many test cases and are now integrated within the tools used by NEXTFLOW-SOFTWARE. The last part concerned the coupling between SPH and Finite Volumes methods. The development of a coupling algorithm made it possible to manage inputs / outputs between the two solvers in a generic and transparent way for both 2D and 3D simulations. Then, an improvement was proposed allowing to create / remove dynamically particles at the boundaries of the Finite Volume solver. Validations are in progress for the 3D extension

Texto completo da fonteExtractive distillation processes with N-formylmorpholine (NFM) are industrially used to separate benzene from non-aromatics hydrocarbons of six carbons. In the process studied in this work, the stream of interest consists of nearly 20 different hydrocarbons. A new set of NRTL parameters was correlated based on literature experimental data. Both vapor-liquid equilibrium data as well as infinite dilution activity coefficient were taken into account; missing parameters were estimated with the UNIFAC group contribution model. The extractive distillation process was simulated using a commercial simulator. Very good agreement with plant data was obtained. The influence of the main parameters in operation, solvent to feed ratio and solvent temperature were studied. The theoretical optimum values were obtained and can be implemented to improve the industrial process. Extreme static sensitivity with respect to reboiler heat was observed indicating that this can be the source of instabilities. In addition a low efficiency was identified at the packing section, contributing to the products specification problem as well.
