Birds are a key environmental asset and this is recognised through comprehensive legislation and policy ensuring their protection and conservation. Many species are active at night and surveys are required to understand the implications of proposed developments such as towers and reduce possible conflicts with these structures. Night vision devices are commonly used in nocturnal surveys, either to scope an area for bird numbers and activity, or in remotely sensing an area to determine potential risk. This thesis explores some practical and theoretical approaches that can improve the accuracy,

There is limited information on communal roosting in parrot species of Western Australia and other parts of the world. Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo is an endangered species that forms large nocturnal communal roosts, and for this reason they are an ideal model species to test the characteristics or factors that are associated with roost sites. Known roost sites distributed across the Swan Coastal Plain were identified and selected through the Great Cocky Count project. A minimum of five and maximum of ten individual trees were assessed at 11 roost sites with an overall total of 95 roost trees samp

In most birds, changing photoperiods from winter to spring and from summer to fall have two consequences: increased feeding followed by migratory activity. To date, the neural system controlling the activation of migratory activity remains unknown, though behavioral observations point to a possible mechanism. During the migration season, diurnal songbirds show extensive disruption of their sleep/wake cycle, sleeping during the day and flying at night. In mammals, similarly altered cycles of activity result from blocking orexin expression in the hypothalamus. It is possible that decreased orexi

Rare species are often those most in need of conservation measures and yet they are often the least well known and most difficult subjects for scientific research. The methods frequently applied when researching species ecology are often not feasible with rare species. This study investigates the ways in which habitat influences the ecology and distribution of a rare, threatened nocturnal bird, the Tasmanian Masked Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae castanops) using mostly indirect methods. The results provide insight into the value of indirect methods in determining habitat surrogates that may be us
