A firm is a community of people who cooperate to achieve a purpose that is in everyone’s interest, albeit for different reasons. A manager’s task is to bring about this cooperation through these people’s motivations, which may be financial but also psychological, social, and moral—and it is here where virtues come into play. Managers must be virtuous and foster or, at least, not obstruct the other stakeholders’ moral qualities. Among these virtues, there is one that warrants particular attention: humility, the operative habit of having a realistic, objective knowledge of oneself and of others and acting accordingly, and which provides the basis for making decisions that seek the firm’s good and that of other people. This does not guarantee the firm’s financial success, but it does provide the means by which a humble manager can become an excellent manager.

Abstract During 1999, the Hampton/NASA Steam Plant achieved a distinguishing safety milestone by completing the year without a single OSHA recordable accident. At the end of the year, the plant had also worked 422 consecutive days without a lost time accident. The Steam Plant Manager, John Austin, called this significant milestone the “Ace Safety Year”. Over the decade Worker’s Compensation and medical expenditures decreased form $153,000 to just $234 by 1995. The savings in insurances premiums is now equal to the amounts spent annually on all safety equipment, employee physicals and uniforms.

Abstract An automatic speech recognition system is being developed for a patient data management system (PDMS) for the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Here, fourteen bedside monitors are linked by a local area network to a personal computer for real-time acquisition of vital sign data and the graphical display of trends. A Virtualização de Funções de Rede oferece uma alternativa flexível para projetar e gerenciar serviços de rede. Neste trabalho foi proposta a arquitetura de um VNF Manager (VNFM) para o gerenciamento do ciclo de vida de VNFs. O VNFM simplifica as operações de gerência e permite a interoperabilidade entre plataformas NFV. A segunda contribuição propõe a VNF-Consensus, uma VNF que sincroniza consistentemente o plano de controle distribuído em uma rede SDN.
