Cambodians living in the U.S.A. suffer from depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and chronic medical disease at rates far in excess of national averages. The Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma’s Cambodian Health Promotion Program seeks to address this burden of disease by offering them culturally tailored health education in a group setting.

The author describes an effort that demonstrates a successful partnership between a professional education program in podiatric medicine, the Pennsylvania State Health Department, and the Professional Diabetes Academy, which served as the catalyst for health promotion, prevention, and education. Similar programs through adaptations geared to local resources could be developed as a demonstration of direct secondary prevention of the complications of diabetes in the older population and have the potential to help meet national goals to significantly reduce amputations.

A health promotion and wellness survey questionnaire was sent to all 143 accredited medical schools in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Of the 120 responding schools, 29 (24.2%) offer health promotion programs and 91 (75.8%) do not; most programs began only recently (average 5.42 years). Nineteen schools plan to begin programs soon.
