Texto completo da fonteIn the globalized world of today, ironically, companies find competitive advantages in locating in proximity of each other. These highly present industrial groupings are called clusters. A popular model to describe the benefits of a cluster environment is the Porter’s Diamond, also called the Diamond Model.
Since the Diamond Model was published in 1990, there is a need of complements, in order for it to fit the dynamic business world of today. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the benefits of a cluster environment with theories from four different designated perspectives other than Porter’s Diamond. This, to see if these theories can complement the Diamond Model to show a more contemporary, and comprehensive picture of the benefits in a cluster environment.
The research is intended to examine if the theoretically stated benefits can be recognized by the companies situated in a cluster environment. A compilation is created by the theoretical framework and tested with the Diamond Model to see if it presents a better picture of cluster benefits. The thesis conclusions fortified the saying “age before beauty”, at least if age is complemented with a social attitude.

The following report examines the craft beer industry as a major component of the beverage production cluster in Northern Colorado. By using the four locational determinants derived by Porter (1990) as a framework, this study evaluates the role of geography as a key component in an industry’s ability to foster a competitive advantage. Despite his focus on national competitiveness, Porter's diamond model has influenced strategic thinking on a regional scale (Stimson, Stough & Roberts, 2006). In turn, it can help us to understand the interactions that underlie localized cluster dynamics. The cluster conception in economic development literature assumes that each of Porter's components is equally spatially connected. Resources are focused towards building assets in a region defined by analyzing the cluster. However, factors of the craft beer industry in Northern Colorado did not completely adhere to the traditional parameters of regional cluster geography. Personal interviews with key actors involved in the craft beer industry, along with economic data revealed that local factors are not always the driving force behind the development of the craft beer industry. In addition, the data analysis indicates that determinants of cluster success may be significant at various geographic scales. Locational determinants may not operate within the same area as defined by cluster analysis. Thus, this report closes with a recommendation to consider the significance of proximity when looking to increase the competitiveness of a given industry cluster—for the relationship between locational determinants and geography varies between factors.

Sweden adopted stringent environmental laws early which positioned them as a strong nation in environmental awareness. The stringent environmental legislation meant that the Swedish companies were required to minimize the environmental impact, which created a demand for eco-efficient products. Despite the early demand for eco-efficient products, the international success of the Swedish cleantech companies has been modest.
The government can increase firms international competitiveness by encouraging, supporting and promoting activities on the domestic market. This is primarily done through implementations of various policies and incentives.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the government’s efforts in promoting the Swedish cleantech industry. In order to give recommendations on which improvements that can be made, two perspectives will be used when analyzing the government’s efforts, the firm approach and the theoretical approach.

Texto completo da fonteIn the last few decades, the use of wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors (silicon carbide SiC, gallium nitride GaN, diamond, etc…) has become popular in the domain of power electronics. Their electronic and mechanical characteristics made of the WBGs a good alternative to the traditional silicon. However, additional studies are mandatory to improve the breakdown voltage, static and dynamic losses, and the performance at high temperature of the WBG devices. In this context, two specific experimental benches OBIC (Optical Beam Induced Current) -under development- are set up during this thesis. OBIC method consists to generate free charge carriers in a reverse biased junction by illuminating the device with an appropriate wavelength. An OBIC signal is measured if the charge carriers are generated in the space charge region. After a first phase of preparation and adaptation of the experimental environment, OBIC measurements led to demonstrate the multi-photonic generation by illuminating a SiC junction with a green laser (532 nm). OBIC measurements allowed giving an image of the electric field at the surface of the diode: OBIC presents a non-destructive analysis to study the efficiency of the peripheral protection and to detect the defects in the semi-conductor. Minority carrier lifetime was also deduced by studying the OBIC decrease at the edge of the space charge region. Ionization rates were extracted using OBIC method; these coefficients are key parameters to predict the breakdown voltage of the devices. OBIC measurements were also realized on the GaN, and two-photon generation was highlighted by measuring an OBIC current in the diamond when illuminating it with a UV laser beam (349 nm)

With the resent trend of regionally economic development and integration, the ROC government raise the plan for developing Taiwan into an Asia-Pacific Regional Operation Center as the long-term goal to strong domestic economic situation. For the reason of the globalizational and plural trend of the media market presently, and the future niche of the Chinese media market. To develop Taiwan into Asia-Pacific Regional Media Center is an important policy. The main goal of this policy is to advance the national competitive advantages of Taiwanese media industry. Under this premise, this thesis used M.Porter''s (1990) "Diamond" system to be the structure of analysis. In order to correspond with the present project and avoid losing the analysis focus. The dimensions of analysis in this study including: factor conditions 、 demand conditions 、 related and supporting industry 、 firm strategy、structure and rivalry , and industri cluster of domestic vision media industry. Due to this exploratory study based on the comprehensive approach, and confined to time and ability and uncertain of secondary data, this study got the data from interviewing method. This study got summary findings that domestic vision media industry has the advantages of growth and development within the four dimensions of "Diamond". This thesis could be viewed by the more complete "Diamond". Under the situation of the domestic vision media industry and the policy attribution of the plan of Asia-Pacific Regional Media Center, "Government" essence plays an important role towards domestic vision media industry in developing competitive advantage of nation. Although Porter''s "Diamond" system is practical model, the adaptability of this model for media industry still need more advanced study to research. Moreover, because the execution of the plan for Asia-Pacific Regional Media Center is not come to an end as yet, this thesis didn''t attempt to analyse with the practical approach. For these reasons above, this thesis suggests that advanced study which related with this topic could not only examine dynamically and practically with single dimension of the "Diamond" model, but also could study from the dimensions of policy making and executing.

After the collapse of Soviet Union in 1990s, Russia has successfully transferred from planned economy to a market-based one; however, it has not performed so well in transforming its economic structure and chose to rely on its abundant natural resources such as oil, natural gas, metals etc. When commodity prices were high, Russia’s economic development looked good at first glance, however, the recent trends in both global and Russian economy show that such strategy is not sustainable. Russian economy needs a new engine of growth, and, after taking into consideration the vast territory, lack of infrastructure as well as relatively weak industrial base, software industry seems to be a very suitable choice. This study uses the diamond model proposed by Michael Porter in 1990 and amended by John Dunning in 1993 to assess the international competitiveness of Russia’s software industry from two perspectives: - feasibility for foreign firms to outsource software development to Russia, - possibility for Russian firms to create products and services that are competitive on the global market Unlike previous researches on this topic, this paper not only outlines the strengths and weaknesses that Russia’s software industry has right now, but also proposes a series of policy measures for decision makers at various levels aimed at supporting the strengths and addressing the shortcomings. In this study, policy implications have been arranged in a system based on the four determinants of Porter’s diamond and have been divided into five levels, namely individual firm, industry, cross-industry, government and multinational; also, the importance of cooperation and coordination between various levels has been emphasized many times. The results have been organized into a table to make it easier to grasp the essence of this research. It has been found that, while Russia does have competitive advantage in, for example, highly skilled human resources, also, the deterioration in macroeconomic environment has had a limited impact on the IT and software industry development, such issues as shortsighted firm strategies, shortcomings in startup ecosystem, slow adjustment of education system to latest tendencies on the labor market, serious lack of non-tax support from the government as well as low level of globalization has become an obstacle to a further improvement in global competitiveness of the industry in question. In order to withstand the competitive pressure from China, India and other emerging economies, policy and decision makers at various levels should coordinate their efforts in addressing those shortcomings and making software industry a new engine of growth for Russian economy.

Cunha, Renata Rondon. "Brazil: an application of porter’s diamond and attractiveness analysis for french fdi". Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/8574.
Texto completo da fonteThe attractiveness of a country is measured by the return of the cost of capital that has to be equal or higher than those made elsewhere and holding an acceptable operational risk to the investor’s employees and shareholders. In order to reach this assessment it is necessary to weigh and compare the markets’ opportunities as well as the country risks with other similar countries. The stagnation of the European economy has generated amongst the European countries the need to expand their horizons to other parts of the globe where the economy is more dynamic and favourable to positive results. France is the chosen country as a seeker for new markets. French companies benefit largely from investing in Brazil not only because of its growing and steady economy but also by the powerful influence in all Latin America. This dissertation is based upon the attractiveness theory and of Michael E. Porter’s Diamond designed to analyse the industries and sectors in which Brazil has competitive advantage. Each attribute of the diamond is studied to explain such competitiveness. Thus, some qualities that may be seen as a weakness can be considered an opportunity of investment in terms of world-wide competitiveness. This study analyses data through the lens of current facts and economic situation of Brazilian market revealing its economically attractive points as a target country for French foreign direct investment (FDI). In conclusion, the findings of the research revise the use of the National Diamond analysis on country’s attractiveness for investment.

Adams, Maphutha Delson. "A competitiveness analysis of the South African manganese industry using Porter’s diamond model". Thesis, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/10539/31137.
Texto completo da fonteIn 2017, it was estimated that South Africa had about 80% of the manganese global resources, but produced only about 36% of the global manganese production. About 90% of the global output of manganese is currently utilised in steel production a nd there is currently no substitute for manganese in steel production. The global outlook for steel demand is expected to continue on a growth path into the near future. The expected increase in manganese demand is expected to lead to the need for the global manganese industry to invest in additional production capacity to meet the demand. South Africa needs to be more competitive regarding its significant manganese resources in order to grow her share of the global production. The aim of this research study was to conduct a competitiveness analysis of the manganese industry using Porter’s diamond model. Porter’s diamond model was used because when it was compared to other competitiveness analysis models, it was found to be relatively more holistic. Porter’s diamond model has four main aspects of the model, which are the factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, and company structure, strategy and rivalry. The competitiveness of the South African manganese industry was compared to the manganese industries in Brazil, India, Ukraine, Australia, and Gabon since these countries have significant manganese resources outside of China and are major manganese producers. The South African and Gabonese manganese industries were found to be less competitive in terms of the factor conditions compared to Australian, Brazilian, Indian and Ukrainian manganese industries. However, when it comes to the demand conditions, related and supporting industries and company strategies, structure and rivalry the South African manganese industry was found to be competitive or on par with the other major manganese producing countries. Overall, the Australian, Indian and Brazilian manganese industries were found to be more competitive than South Africa and Gabon. In conclusion, the South African manganese industry was found to be less competitive when Porter’s diamond model was used to analyse competitiveness. The South African manganese industry requires significant improvement mostly in the factor conditions in order to be competitive like Australia, Brazil and India. Issues such as quality education of its citizens in key sectors that drive the economy, the upgrading of the manganese, the management of scarce water resources, access to electricity and the threat of renewables on electricity costs, limited capital resources and foreign direct investment, and logistics competitiveness need to be addressed

Owing to the change of market situation, the core of Taiwan’s information technology industry has gradually shifted from hardware industry to software industry. Information services provide users with professional infrastructure, business process, consulting, development deployment, software support and hardware maintenance. Hence, affected by the development of new technology, the demand of our government, businesses and individuals for Information services has continued to grow. This study applied Porter’s diamond model to establish hierarchy structure of service competitiveness model, and review related studies of Porter’s diamond model and Taiwan’s information service industry via literature review. Based on the theory of analytic hierarchy process (AHP), this study built up hierarchy structure and weight of decision factor in information service industry. According to the personal experience of 20 experts, this study found that the strategic demand is the most important factor, followed by firm strategy, structure and rivalry in the country. The findings of the study reveal that the industry competitiveness are whether the market is expansibie, whether the underlying market has been fully developed, and whether the existing market scale has compatibility of expansion. Based on the findings, this study propse that further management meaning comprise demand condition expansion and research capability enhancement of businesses.

FPD (Flat Panel Display) is one of “Two Trillion and Twin Star Development Program” lead by Taiwan’s industrial policy. Taiwan reached No. 1 capacity in end-product value and capacity by 2007, but then market share is declined gradually after Economy Tsunami in 2008. Due to the G8.5 capacity expansion in China and Korean makers keep leading in technology; Taiwanese makers are facing the most challenge situation. Recently an article entitled &;quot;Survival battle of Taiwanese makers in 500 days” mentioned about the upcoming eight G8.5 lines in China will be full in mass production soon. How do Taiwanese makers react to this situation and take immediately action to secure business? The management of firms has to face external challenges during growing up, seize chances under a dynamic environment, well utilize national competitive advantage to change industrial structure, learn to master the complex but reality competition with diversity orientation in addition to its core competitiveness, and then enhance its own competitive advantage through co-opetition strategies. Under current situation and fast technology development, we need to study FPD in a wider view to keep Taiwan’s competitive advantage. This study selects FPD industry, which is representative of the most competitive optoelectronics industry in Taiwan, for empirical study. It utilizes Michael E. Porter''s &;quot;diamond model&;quot; as the theoretical basis for the interpretation and analysis in order to gain a macro perspective to further competition strategic analysis. The study include the factors of production, supply and demand conditions, supply chain of brands, corporate strategy and brand manufacturers to compete with the industry, the role of government to integrate industry resources, the future challenges and opportunities. All discussion on above topics is based on the core of FPD industry, and takes interviews with managers of supply chain in-depth. This thesis is to identify the key success factors for co-competing strategies, and to enhance competitive advantage of Taiwan''s FPD makers while competing business with China, Japan, and South Korea makers. Most of all, it takes a further step to look into the possibility to combine research advantage of IT industry, utilize and bridge its strength to world-class home appliances, medical and automobile electronic brands. Finally, it suggests Taiwan government to refer the industrial development vision and strategy of China, Japan and Korea, and integrate FPD industry resources for a better tomorrow.

Export development plays an important role in promoting economic growth and development. Understanding of export competitiveness has primarily been pursued in terms of economic variables and market conditions. This study involved an investigation into the determinants of export competitiveness of yerba mate cocido industry in Paraguay and to develop a framework to enhance the competitiveness of yerba mate cocido industry. This study takes Michael Porter’s (1998) diamond of national competitive advantage model that includes: demand condition, factor condition, related and supporting industries, firm strategy, structure and rivalry, role of chance and the rol of government; to assess the nature of competition and Paraguayan competitiveness respectively. This integrated approach is essential to identify the possible strategies for the Paraguayan Yerba Mate Cocido industry to improve the competitiveness. A qualitative research approach was used and Porter’s diamond model was taken as proposed model of this study. Face to face interviews with the structured questionnaire was used to collect primary data from the three different sources, two from the Paraguayan government (REDIEX) and one from the private sector (Centro Yerbatero Paraguayo). Key stakeholders of yerba mate cocido exporting area were considered as the respondents. Supported by the empirical evidences, this research reveals that the intensity of competition in the global Yerba Mate Cocido industry is very high. Moreover, Paraguay has many unfavorable conditions together with some favorable conditions. Finally some strategies are recommended to improve the Paraguayan competitiveness in the global tea industry.

Abstract As far as the growth of the domestic economic developement is concerned, the establishment of the industrial park contributes a lot to industrial developement and economic growth. However, over the past few years reveal that many of old industrial parks are out-dated and obsolete, thus rendering them incapable of manufacturing and/or producing state of the art or high-tech goods and services. An industrial park biggest competitive leverage lies on its optimal environment and conditions for manufacturing and providing quality services. If an industrial park does not posses such environment and conditions, it loses its competitive edge. The professor of the Harvard University in America and the author of « The Competitive Advantage of Nations” brings up the theory of ‘’Diamond system’’,which indicates that the nation plays a crucial role in the success of enterprise’s competitiveness. Some nations seem to be able to provide better environment that boosts the industry progress and upgrading than other nations. The relation between a nation and the industrial competitiveness is equivalent to the capability of a nation to boost the industry in order to improve and innovate. Porter elucidates that innovation is not only based on the new techniques researched and developed by industry, but also on the location of it, both of them will decide whether the innovation activity is successful or not. The subject of this thesis focuses on “The Porter’s Diamond Model” as a study on how to improve Taiwan’s industrial parks’ competitive edge. The result tells us that the five dimensions to accelerate the competitive capacity of industrial parks differs from the degree of importance and satisfaction, which means that the five dimensions of the industrial parks do not live up to the expectation of the clients of an industrial park and thus there are still a lot of room for improvement to accelarate the competitiveness of the industrial parks. According to clients of an industrial park, their satisfaction in doing business with such park are:cost of real estate for either leasing or buying; availability and accessibility of assistance in the administrative procedures and the manufacturing of goods and products;cost saving;flexibility in switching and changing of skills and upgrading them;availability of assistance in modernizing technology from traditional methods to state of the art, and so on. The five requirements mentioned above are the main concerns of clients. However, the quality of costumer service is just as important. At the same time, an industrial park must constantly strive to provide the best services possible to maintain any competitive edge. Therefore, in order to accelarate the competitiveness of the industrial parks, service centre needs to work on these gaps.

Because enterprises are facing more challenges in the international dynamic marketplace, it is important to understand the competitive advantages and development strategies that the world’s leading industries and firms utilize. This study provides an analysis of development strategies for Taiwan’s TFT-LCD industry by using the Porter diamond model. We find that the Taiwan’s TFT-LCD industry took the great chance of technology transfer from Japan. In addition, Taiwan’s government established the Science Parks that provide the effects of clustering and industrial agglomeration. Furthermore, the domestic market of Taiwan which is also the biggest exporting country in the world supports the demand of the panel of TFT-LCD prodcuts. In order to get more specific perspectives from top-down approach, we investigate the development strategies of two leading Taiwanese TFT-LCD manufacturing firms in the world. These two firms, AUO and CMO, employ different strategies to gain their competitive advantages in the world marketplace. While the full lines and portfolios of TFT-LCD products that AUO produces cover a wider world marketplace and gain the advantage of flexible production capacity, CMO makes a lot of effects on R&D for its products and technology development based on the effects of industrial agglomeration.

Since the government initiated the national health insurance in March 1995, the insurance revenue has been very limited. Over the past 15 years, the number of hospital has been reduced to 270 by 33% due to the implementation of the payment control system. To maintain competitiveness and sustainable development, the hospitals must develop the self-paying market out of the fierce domestic competition market. The international medical tourism industry has experienced a rapid growth. In 2011, the output value of the international medical tourism is expected to be 400 hundred millions. As Taiwan has various travel resources, outstanding medical care quality and reasonable charges, how do the hospitals find their competitive advantages to compete with international competitors, also target on the 400 hundred million medical tourism business opportunities, and allow the tourism industry to regain growth with the support from government? This study conducts a qualitative research by using “document analysis” and “in-depth interview”. Based on Porter’s diamond model and SWOT analysis, this study discusses the development of Taiwan’s medical tourism and also explores whether Taiwan has competitive advantages over its major competitors in Asia such as Singapore, Thailand and India. Further, the advantages, disadvantages, weaknesses and opportunities were given as references for government, medical organizations and the tourism industry to create Taiwan’s competitive advantages toward the international trend of the medical tourism. Through the analysis of interview, it is found that Taiwan mainly targeted on Chinese market and has language and location advantages over its major Asian competitors Singapore, Thailand and India. However, it is very necessary for Taiwan to improve the cross-strait relationship, to prioritize the medical health travel, and continuously promote the critical care medicine in order to get more business opportunities in the medical tourism industry. Comparing to its major competitors, however, Taiwan does not have relative advantage of medical quality, expertise and price. Besides, Taiwan should enhance its horizontal alliance and international marketing and revise the relevant regulations in order to improve its competitive advantages. The recommendations of this study have the following three perspectives: (1) speed up the construction of medical tourism area to develop the clustering and the pull through effects; (2) build strategic alliance among hospitals to promote medical care travel;(3) actively modify the medical law to allow the medical advertisements and the commercialization of medical organizations.

As Taiwan’s economy takes off, labor-oriented industries in the past gradually transformed and restructured their organizations in order to achieve a sustainable position with competitive advantage in the market. To study Taiwan’s strategies on developing cultural creative industry and its related laws and regulations, this study chose subjects from the following three categories: government officials involving in developing strategies for the cultural creative industry, scholars and experts specialized in this field, and people who are actually engaging in the creative cultural work. This study mainly applied methods of paper analysis, in-depth visitation, analytic hierarchy process and triangulation to prove the results of this study, and finally summarized the conclusion of this study as described in the following: 1.The difference in nature between the cultural creative industry and traditional manufacturing industry is significant, and such difference does not simply reflect on production schedule or reformation of precision technology, but rather, it is an operation of a brand new way of thinking. 2.When promoting the cultural creative industry, the government plays the role of a coordinator connecting the industry with ordinary business operation model. As a promoter, the government employs policies as tools as well as laws and regulations. 3.The government should enhance the political and economic stabilities across the strait, make good use of the resources within the great China economic circles, lower the costs, develop brand names and expand market shares, and also seek the feasibility of developing brand names from Mainland China. 4.The government should combine the know-how in manufacturing industry and information technology with the contents and creativity in the cultural creative industry to enhance its innovative and competitive force, and also encourage more investment to pour in by nurturing a flagship industry to make a fine demonstration. 5.The government should actively lead venture capital to invest on the cultural creative industry, and by using the venture capital funds as well as technologies from the government and government agencies assist general business entities to cope with foreign pressure and competition. 6.The government should manage to raise the level of strategic execution, enhance budget and integration, and be ready for any interdepartmental coordination and law relief to cope with the impact from Mainland China and Korea. The government should also consider replacing tax relief with measures such as subsidy and law relief.

National energy security in Taiwan is vulnerable, because of its high dependency on imported fossil fuels. Approximately 98% of Taiwanese fuel reserves are shipped from abroad, thus Taiwanese government relies on volatile oil prices and does not have a control over the petrol price within the country. It is considered as an important problem, because of its complicated political situation and that is why the government is trying to find alternative energy resources. One of the options is fuel with additive of bioethanol, which gained a wide popularity in many countries in the last decades. In order to understand the current state of bioethanol industry in Taiwan and in this way, look for improvement propositions, this industry was compared to that of Germany, one of the world’s leaders in bioethanol production and one of the biggest consumers in the EU. Porter’s Diamond Model was used to elaborate the competitiveness of bioethanol industry in both countries, next, their competitiveness was compared. After the analysis, it was found that German bioethanol industry have several advantages over Taiwanese. These were used to derive possible points of improvement in the Taiwanese bioethanol sector. Overall recommendation to Taiwan bioethanol industry is to continue supporting the use of bioethanol through increasing Research and Development projects and popularizing this alternative among customers.

Basing on the growing role of international competitiveness (IC) and the short comings of World Competitiveness Report (WCR), this dissertation builds a new measurement tool, following Porter''''s "Diamond", to validly measure IC. This n ewtool should match the following requirements:1. It measures IC by using "ind ustry" as the unit, rather than by "whole nation." 2. The new tool could set a ppropriate "criterions" to confirm the explanatory effects. 3. The items could directly explain IC. 4. It is "tailor-made" for a particular industry. 5. Num ber of the items should be less than that of WCR''''s. 6. It is constructed by ro bust theoretical base. After four empirical surveys (including the surveys tow ard semiconductor makers, biotech industry, and sports goods makers), the resu lts indicates that the new tool has good empirical validity. The MTMM (multitr ait-multimethod) results also points good convergent validity and fair discrim inatevalidity of the new tool. Finally, this study also mentions some suggeti ons toward practitioners and future researchers.

Going through the financial crisis, the business environment changed tremendously in recent years, and the governmental policy between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits become closer than ever. The discussion of key successful factors for banking industry in the ever-changing environment was the motive of this research. This research was structured on Michael Porter’s Diamond Theory, and adopted AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to analyze the data from questionnaire survey of banking industry in Tainan area. According to the research result, in the banking industry, the key factors of Diamond Model were: demand condition, enterprise strategy, relevant supporting condition and opportunity. And the more significant successful factors in the final result were product and service innovation, customer database building and renewal, competitive advantage in new market and technological resources.
