In this paper we examine the role of geographic location in the financial and innovation performance of publicly traded companies in the US pharmaceutical industry. Regional production clusters are identified and mapped. Particular attention is given to Porter's work on competitive advantage (the diamond paradigm) (Porter, 1990 The Competitive Advantage of Nations). Several metrics of business performance at the company level are collated with local factor conditions, the relative presence of related or supporting industries, and the degree of interfirm rivalry within production clusters (among other things). Our main hypothesis is that company performance responds positively to the location-specific assets identified by Porter. We explore this hypothesis using a series of t-tests and regression models based on secondary data. The empirical results lend partial support to Porter's model. Specifically, the data show that companies located within major clusters exhibit stronger financial performance than their counterparts located elsewhere. Cluster membership is also found to play a positive role in product innovation (as measured by patent counts). Overall, the data show that different metrics of company performance are influenced by different combinations of strategic and locational variables.

AbstractThis article discusses key comparative advantages of wine-producing nations and suggest prospective views on their evolution. Our methodology is twofold. First, we study comparative advantages in 16 countries using Porter's diamond. Then, we report results from a survey in which wine economists are asked to assess the future trade performance of these countries. Results are relatively consistent across methods regarding the future “heavy weights” like China, but also New Zealand and Chile, countries show the greatest potential to succeed in the future global wine trade. It is also expected that Georgia, the United Kingdom, and Australia play an important role, although to a lesser extent. Our findings indicate that comparative advantages in wine trade are neither uniform nor static; especially, terroir is no longer sufficient. The diamond approach contradicts experts from two countries in particular, France and Argentina, suggesting that experts put great emphasis on demand and market structures as key trade determinants for the future. Many regions and their representatives decide on the amount of support they will provide to industrial clusters, their births, and their existing phase based on the public budget. Nowadays the efficiency of public spending must be provided. There are many examples showing situations where industrial clusters were cancelled when public support was limited or no longer available. Through the use of a special diagnostic method, one can find out if the industrial cluster is able to rise and also be viable without massive public budget support. The suggestion of a new method for industrial cluster identification is the aim of this paper. The Porter's diamond model of the cluster's competitiveness environment is the substance of the novel method.

The aim of this paper is to analyse how legal and political conditions in Poland and Germany affect the competitiveness of renewable energy (RES) production. The analysis also includes the most important competitive source of energy in both countries, namely coal. An attempt to assess the influence of governments on the RES sector by influencing carbon-based energy was also made. The framework of this analysis is expanded diamond of M. E. Porter's competitive advantage of nations, although its scope was limited to the governmental factor and its influence on the other components of the model. The analysis shows great importance of legal and political conditions for the competitiveness of RES in both countries, including enormous impact of hidden support for coal, and indicates disadvantages of the methods of RES subsidising.

This paper presents a conceptual framework for analyzing the outcomes of potential competitive strategies and their expected payoffs for container terminal operators in the container handling industry. The framework is based on the integration of Bowley's linear model of aggregate demand of product differentiation with Porter's "Diamond" model. It focuses on the number of containers handled, prices charged, and profits earned to analyze a variety of strategies that could be employed by container terminal operators to enhance their competitive position. The findings suggest that strategies to build complementary relationships and stimulate greater demand are more desirable than alternatives because they generate benefits that accrue to the entire container port cluster. Conversely, strategies that are intended to raise entry barriers, employ strategic pricing mechanisms, and/or involve collusion are found to lead to the formation of insular clusters and retard competitive advantage in the long-run.

This study explores Porter’s diamond of national competitiveness, by critically examining both the analytical virtues, the extensions, and the criticisms it has received over time. The aim is to analyse the stage in which the study of the diamond is currently in, about twenty years after the introduction of M. Porter, suggesting that its analytical contribution focusing on the industrial dynamics (meso-competitiveness) is still relevant even though significant analytical repositioning and improvements are possible. This research attempts to integrate a set of evolutionary socioeconomic dimensions into the “diamond’s” analytical perspective, ending up with a proposed “competitiveness web” conceptual model.

This study has two objectives: first, to test the competitiveness of Textile Commodities and Indonesian Textile Product (TPT) in the global market and identify the prospects of the new export markets. Second, identify the competitiveness of the textile industry using case studies in the Solo Raya region. The Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Export Product Dynamics (EPD) methods are using in this study. The results show that Indonesian TPT commodities have a lost opportunity category in the central export destinations countries, such as a decline in market share. Indonesian TPT commodities have prospects in Austria, Canada, Finland, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, and Sweden due to competitiveness and domination in the market. Besides, the condition of the Indonesian textile industry competitiveness shows low competitiveness in terms of factor conditions, demand conditions, supporting and related industries, strategy, structure, and competition that are components of Porter's diamond model.JEL Classification: L6, L67How to Cite:Prasetyani, D., Abidin, A. The objective of this study is to identify the factors that determine the competitiveness of garment industry in Ethiopia. To achieve this, Porter's diamond model of national competitiveness was detected as a model to assess the competitiveness of the garment industry in Ethiopia. Based on conceptual framework, the study's six hypotheses were developed and tested. Six independent variables considered are: factor conditions; demand conditions; related and supporting industries; industry's strategy, structure and rivalry; role of government; and chance factors and dependent variable is competiveness. Primary data are collected by self-administered structured questionnaire from owners/general managers of industry. Totally 37 out of the targeted 38 respondents duly filled and returned the questionnaires for analysis giving response rate of 97.36 per cent. The results were presented in forms of mean, standard deviation, Pearson correlation, ANOVA and regression analysis. This study finds that the composite the five independent variables accounted for 73 per cent variance for the competitiveness of garment industry in Ethiopia. The independent variables show the positive effect on predicting the dependent variable (except the demand conditions). Two factors --factor conditions and chance factors --were found to be statically significant determinants for the competitiveness of the garment industry in Ethiopia.

Indonesia is one of the world's largest pepper producing countries and most of Indonesia's pepper production is exported abroad. Apart from the superiority of Indonesia's natural resources, namely as a country with the second-largest area of pepper cultivation, now competition between countries cannot be measured only by the number of exports it owns. The existence of synergy between countries in producing a product with high economic value is evidence of trade integration between countries. This study aims to analyze the comparative advantage of Indonesian pepper compared to Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Malaysia, to analyze the competitive advantage of Indonesian pepper, and to analyze the value chain of Indonesian pepper. This study used a sample of five countries, namely Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Malaysia. This research used quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The methods used in this research used Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Porter's Diamond Theory, and value added analysis. The analysis results show that the five competing countries have a comparative advantage over pepper; Indonesia has a competitive advantage in conditions of natural resource factors. Indonesia's participation in the global value chain is declining. The main focus of the government in 2020 is on the input, production, capital, and market sides. Keywords: comparative advantage, competitive advantage, pepper, value added, value chain.

Michael Porter offered a model that allows examining why some states are more competitive and why some industries within states are more competitive than others are. In this way, Porter’s diamond model of national competitiveness was detected as a model with which to assess the sources of competitive advantages of an industry in a particular country and it can help realize the competitive status of a nation in global competition. This model consists of four national determinants of competitive advantage: factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, and firm’s strategy, structure and rivalry. The Porter’s theory is that these factors interact with each other to form conditions where innovation and competitiveness occurs. As the purpose of this study is to apply porter’s theory about national competitiveness on the Palestinian economy, the well known model in the literature developed by Porter was used. In this study, the competitiveness of the main sectors that have an important place in Palestine was investigated by using Porter’s Diamond model. To achieve the aim of the research both primary and secondary data collection techniques were used. The collected data was analyzed and evaluated according to the diamond model. So, we grabbed at an opportunity to evaluate the current situation according to the factors in the model and to detect areas that provide facilities to improve the competitiveness of the sectors.

Wind energy has grown significantly in the recent years worldwide, as an option in achieving sustainability in the energy sector. In Italy the wind capacity installed has boomed as well, in terms of capacity installed and government incentives given to the sector, achieving the record value od 5,797 MW installed in 2010, positioning itself 6th below countries as China, US, Germany, Spain and India. As a new developing sector, the present paper aims to investigate which are the features of the new emerging industry and which factors are affecting its competitiveness. Moreover, some findings have been used to identify and discuss which are the main weakness and strengths, threats and opportunities of the sector. In order to have an integrated picture of the industry competitiveness, they have been used those categories belonging to the theoretical framework of Porter's Diamond Model, namely (1) Factor Conditions, (2) Demand Conditions, and (3) Firm's Strategy, Structure and Rivalry, (4) Related and Support Industry, (5) Government and (6) Chance. The model has been adjusted taking into account some critics and improvements of the original Porter model. Each category has been analysed in details; data that comes from archival documents were reviewed carefully in order to select the more authoritative sources. A crucial part of the study concerns the analysis of technology capability and the firm's strategy and rivalry and the support industry; arguments have been deepen by using a survey that has involved companies operating along the wind supply chain in Italy. The survey offered the opportunity to have a "firm's perspective", concerning the perceptions of competitiveness opportunities and barriers by business executives who are dealing with local and global business situations. Moreover a final discussion of the main findings of the competitiveness analysis have been translated in terms of a SWOT analysis, that has the advantage of being easily readable by the industry itself and by decision makers. The main result of the study is that the growth in wind capacity installed in Italy has led to the development a new industry composed of multinational subsidiaries and local companies, operating in different areas of the supply chain has developed. The sector has been characterised by high dynamism and by increasing competitiveness, along the all supply chain that has promoted the development of new companies and new business that have had positive return on income and jobs. Positive advanced factor conditions, like physical resources, the high level of renewable energy demand due to the high fossil fuel dependance of Italy, government policies supporting the domestic market have positively influenced competitiveness of the industry. The main weakness of the industry is that it has still a marginal role in technology production, and R&D activities, which are commonly carried out abroad. However the learning process that has been created has been a stimulus for new turbine and component R&D activities. Therefore, actors and decision makers could attempt to further strengthen positive factors and overcome the negative ones in order to increase competitiveness of the national wind industry.
