The spin-ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 (HTO) and Dy2Ti2O7 (DTO) are part of a large family of compounds called magnetic pyrochlore oxides. Typically, the magnetism of these systems arise from the rare-earth ions RE3+ which sits at the vertices of a lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra and couple with the degrees of freedom of the crystal leading to a wide spectrum of exotic phenomena. In spin-ices the magnetic moments of the individual RE3+ ions are large enough to let their mutual dipolar interactions be the leading factors for the thermodynamics. The aim of this project is to develop novel approaches for the detection and characterisation of engineered and other potentially harmful nanoparticles in the air. In particular we wish to distinguish specific nanomaterials from the background atmospheric aerosol to provide a means of measuring human exposure to nanomaterials that may present a risk to health. This thesis demonstrates an efficient quantum memory that for the first time preserves more quantum information than it loses. Beyond this, it describes how even higher efficiency may be realised without sacrificing the other performance characteristics that are required for a practical device. A quantum memory is a device to store and recall the quantum state of light. Such a memory will be required for most applications of the emerging field of quantum information. The closest practical application is quantum repeaters for long distance encryption. A more distant target is quantum computing.

The recent advances in trapping, cooling, and manipulation of alkali atoms have opened the possibility to create and study novel states of matter. The quantum nature of matter becomes relevant at ultracold temperatures and emergent phenomena, such as Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), are strongly affected by the interaction between atoms and their statistics.
