One hundred patients undergoing elective hand surgery were randomized to have their hands exsanguinated by either the Rhys-Davies exsanguinator alone or the Rhys-Davies exsanguinator supplemented by a 500 ml bag of intravenous fluid which was placed in the patient’s palm as the exsanguinator was rolled up the limb. The quality of the exsanguination was assessed by the surgeon using a pre-defined subjective scoring system. There were no significant differences in the exsanguination scores of the two treatment groups.

Serial swabs were taken from the inner and outer surfaces of a new Rhys-Davies exsanguinator before and after use on the limbs of patients to exsanguinate limbs prior to tourniquet inflation and surgery. Both surfaces of the exsanguinator showed increasing levels of contamination with bacterial colonisation with use starting from the first use. The organisms grown included potentially harmful bacteria such as Pseudomonas sp. The Rhys-Davies exsanguinator can harbour potentially harmful organisms and, thus, may raise the risk of infection transmission between patients when used without cleaning between uses. Methods of effective cleaning of the exsanguinator between uses are discussed.

A study was carried out to compare the effectiveness of upper limb exsanguination using the Esmarch bandage, a crepe bandage and the Rhys-Davies exsanguinator. Upper limb volume changes were measured in ten volunteers using a water displacement method. The crepe bandage produced a mean volume reduction of 59 ml (range, 39–94), which was very similar to the Esmarch bandage, which achieved 63 ml (range, 42–101). This difference is negligible in practical terms. Both bandages were more effective than the Rhys-Davies exsanguinator, which reduced the volume by a mean of 28 ml (range, 11–54). It is our opinion that the use of the Esmarch bandage in hand surgery is unnecessary and recommend the crepe bandage as a safer alternative.

This paper reports the results of an investigation into the pressure exerted by the Rhys-Davies exsanguinator on the palm and dorsum of the hand. We hypothesised that, due to the shape of the hand, the palm is shielded from the full effect of the exsanguinator, but our study showed that it is compressed as well as the dorsum. However, placing a bag of fluid in the patient’s palm significantly increased the pressure applied to the palm.

Summary The grammatical category ‘declension’ cannot be applied to Welsh substantive nouns since they have one form only for the singular and the plural respectively. But some Welsh grammarians of the 16th and 17th centuries tried to use this category to classify substantive nouns by proposing new definitions, based on the system of plural formation (Robert 1567) or on the system of initial mutations (Rhys 1592; Salesbury 1593). The latter approach formed a short-lived ‘paradigm’ in Welsh grammaticography with a dynamism of its own. It became divorced from the classification of nouns only and was applied to all words which undergo initial mutations (Davies 1621). The history of the definitions of declension in Welsh grammaticography is thus an instructive example of the changes grammatical categories can undergo when applied to a specific vernacular and of the creativity of the vernacular grammarians.

Introduction A good example of emergentism - interpreted by M. Siderits [1] as - Buddhist reductionism) is an excerpt from the dialogue between King Milinda[4] and the monk Nāgasena[5] about the self, which is part of the text close to the Abhidhamma tradition entitled "Milindapaha" (or "Questions of King Milinda"). The text was published by V. Trenckner in 1880 in [2] and translated into English by T.W. Rhys Davids [3] in the series "Sacred Books of the East". Furthermore, there is an English translation by I. B. Horner [4] and Bhikkhu Pesala [5] and into Russian by A.V. Paribok [6]. There are also German [7] and French translations [8; 9]. Yet the classical translation by Rhys Davids is currently largely obsolete. Paribok's translation into Russian is not convenient for practical use as it would need to be further translated into English, and this double translation, which is not very good from the point of view of the philological approach to the text. We have therefore decided to make our own, new translation of the passage from "Milindapaha", in which the dialogue about the self is being held.

Daniel John Gogerly (1792–1862), a British Wesleyan Methodist missionary, served in Sri Lanka from 1818 until his death. He learnt P?li in M?tara in the 1830s and was one of the first British translators of the P?li texts into English. Praised by fellow orientalist, T.W. Rhys Davis, as ‘the greatest Pali scholar of his age’ and hailed by his missionary colleagues as the expert who showed them how to attack Buddhism, his work was both pioneering and deeply flawed. This paper first situates Gogerly in his missionary context and then examines one translation — the first 18 vaggas of the Dhammapada, using three versions, one of which was an unpublished rough translation. It demonstrates that Gogerly, in spite of a commendable wish to be just to Buddhism, used his translations to highlight difference between Buddhism and Christianity in furtherance of his missionary agenda. Gogerly is important not only because his translations were so early but also because the differing factors that conditioned them underscore the complexity within any study of orientalist representations of Buddhism.
