This thesis reports on an ethnography of a hospital social work team in Wales. The aim of this study was to explore the nature of the statutory social work role within hospitals, to examine how hospital social workers do their work, and to shed light on how social work fits into the hospital context. Thousands of women were affected by the civil war in Sierra Leone, which took place between 1991 and 2002. Using a postcolonial framework, the study explores the wartime experiences of women, and examines the ways in which women provided assistance to one another in the early post-conflict period. Qualitative interviews were conducted with two distinct sets of participants in rural Sierra Leone: 1) women who suffered various forms of abuse during the war, and 2) female leaders who were active participants in the healing process of others. Whether or not there is greater normative tolerance for physical discipline within certain ethno-cultural groups has been hotly debated both within social research and discourse. This descriptive quantitative study examined the characteristics of 72 substantiated physical abuse cases reported to Montreal’s English youth protection over a 2-year period.
