The basis for this research is a carbon/epoxy Tee-profile with a junction reinforced by the O3S® stitching process (one single side stitching), patented by EADS. The behaviour of such a Tee-beam was studied under elementary tensile and shear loadings. The problem was idealized macroscopically by the finite element method under linear and plane strain conditions, with isotropic or orthotropic behavior. An Interlaminar failure criterion was used in order to predict the first delamination in the structure. Mechanical tests were carried out to quantify the mechanical resistance of the RTM structures while FEA was used to optimize it. The study was organized in three steps : Characterization of the manufacturing process and tool developed specifically for this research project as well as the parameters influencing the strength of the assembly ; Comparative study of three different stacking sequences for the Tee preforms (or “draping”) and stitching pattern enhancement proposals. An optimal preform configuration and an improvement of the stitching pattern were identified ; Optimization of the identified concept by FEA and validation by mechanical experimentations. Compared to the state of art, this study lead to a significant improvement of the mechanical strength of preforms assembly for an equivalent production cost

The goal is to find the minimal weight for the panel that satisfies strength constraints (damage tolerance, reparability and buckling) but also stacking sequence constraints. To sum-up, the goal is to find all stacking sequences of all different panel areas. This research has allowed to propose a multi-level methodology (4 steps). The first step is the panel thickness law optimisation by using an homogenised material and a gradient-based algorithm. The second step is the research of stacking sequence all over the panel with a fitted genetic algorithm. To perform that, a lay-up table that describes all stacking sequences is used. Then, the third and fourth step allow to adjust thickness law by taking into account the lay-up table issued from step 2. This methodology is applied to an industrial test case (A400M VTP). This application of the methodology allows to underline the performance of the methodology in terms of weight. But, it shows also the modularity of the methodology that is a benefit in industrial context

Firstly, concerning on the quasi-brittle material, the elasticity of modelling are calibrated, and the rupture behaviour is verified with linear elastic fracture mechanics. Then the simulations of wedge splitting tests are performed under monotonic load. The interface elasticity and failure dominate in the fracture propagation of samples, which gives rise to a simplified interface model. The parameter calibration on Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio is conducted between interface model and discrete element method. Through the fitting with experimental results, the interface strength and energy release rate are also identified by discrete element method and simplified interface model. Comparing with linear elastic fracture mechanics, the interface rupture presents more released energy. The strength and energy release rate are reduced because of the application of the fiber glass grid. The fatigue behaviour is studied by simulations of 4-point bending fatigue tests. Bodin’s fatigue model 'L2R' is adapted with discrete element method. The effect of each parameter on the damage evolution is studied respectively. The fiber glass grid helps to extent the fatigue life mainly after the fatigue cracks cross the grid. The interface effect is observed on prolonging the fatigue life of all the phases. From both monotonic and fatigue tests, it indicates that good bonding between two asphalt concrete layers is important to the resistance of rupture
