The abundance and size frequency distribution (SFD) of Dungeness crabs (Cancer magister) within traps varies with soak time. Such bias in catch rates was reduced using a standardization model that corrected for (1) changes in bait effectiveness over time and (2) agonistic interactions between crabs within traps and those attempting entry. The model estimated the entry and exit of crabs based on the results of trapping experiments specifically designed to (1) emphasize the above two processes and (2) estimate escapement rates from traps for crabs of different sizes. Results clearly indicated th

Pitfall traps have a long tradition in carabidology and have been used for more than a century (e.g. over a century ago by Reitter). However, different trap designs were and are often used (e.g. preservative liquids, trap diameters, with or without roof). The resulting lack of comparability undermines the suitability of the catches, as for many modern ecological and conservation biological questions, the compilation of data across large geographical scales is important. This applies in particular to long-term studies, which are currently debated in Central Europe to mitigate insect decline. Th

AbstractCatches by gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar (Linnaeus)) ‘milk-carton’ pheromone traps with (+)-disparlure were compared with estimates of the absolute aerial density of gypsy moths obtained using a suction trap of known absolute sampling efficiency. The mean number of male L. dispar caught per pheromone trap per day was found to be proportional to the 2/3 power of the suction trap's estimate of aerial density. We infer that the efficiency of the gypsy moth milk-carton pheromone trap is density-dependent, declining as aerial density increases. The significance of the density-dependent effic

Inspired by recent discussions of ‘traps’ among STS and anthropology scholars, this article explores how Japanese scientists capture iPS (induced pluripotent stem) cells to take advantage of their potentialities. Since iPS cells are tiny, unstable, and permeable, humans cannot intervene directly to transform their morphology and nature. Making a proper environment for their thriving—in other words, creating a trap—is the only way for humans to successfully harness and direct the cells’ potentiality. Based on long-term fieldwork in one laboratory, I suggest that the technologies, institutions,

Camera traps that capture photos of animals are a valuable tool for monitoring biodiversity. The use of camera traps is rapidly increasing and there is an urgent need for standardization to facilitate data management, reporting and data sharing. Here we offer the Camera Trap Metadata Standard as an open data standard for storing and sharing camera trap data, developed by experts from a variety of organizations. The standard captures information necessary to share data between projects and offers a foundation for collecting the more detailed data needed for advanced analysis. The data standard

The imagery represents a rich source of data on mammals larger than ~200 grams, providing information at the level of species and communities. Camera-trap surveys generate observations of specific mammals at a certain location and time, including photo evidence that can be evaluated by experts to map species distribution patterns. The imagery also provides information on the species composition of local communities, identifying which species co-occur and in what proportion. Moreover, the

Abstract The development of oil fields are becoming more complex and more challenging as the industry moving away from easy oil, the pursuit of efficiency, reliability, and consistency has become paramount. One strategy that organizations often employ to achieve these goals, especially in complex oil fields development, is automation and standardization of repetitive process. Automation refers to the utilization of technology and software systems to perform tasks and processes with minimal human intervention, improving work quality and Standardization, on the other hand, is the process of esta

Abstract The offshore industry needs energy-efficient and cost-effective solutions to scale up the energy transition. Through the development of a series of lean, all-electric Subsea Valve Actuators (OTC-32346-MS), most processing valves can now be easily electrified. However, some critical functions are still performed by hydraulically controlled systems due to the high loads required, the safety features demanded, the fact that they are in stand-alone applications, and also because of the offshore industry standard levels of reliability and integrity. This study examines creation by information recipients by the linguistic landscape survey in Nikko, a World Heritage Site in Japan. Linguistic landscape refers to the language signs along public roads. We can see traditional Japanese ways there. Old Japanese sometimes used a part of the ancient poems as a common culture in their poem, and from there, they created a double emotion of their own compositions and the ancient poems. This is a proactive and creative method in which the recipient adds a new vision to the one created by the creator/sender of the information. It is said Japanese langua
